This Book

Writers of romantic suspense often use the trope of the uncooperative female protagonist. They also always plot the heroine in danger of being killed and under constant attack. This presents a logical problem because the protagonist’s lack of cooperation works against what readers see as natural self-preservation. In this book, not only does Marina’s lack of cooperation present a danger to herself, but it endangers everyone around her. Johnson’s explanation of her reluctance doesn’t make sense in light of her repeated life-threatening circumstances. If this were written from a true investigative standpoint, there was more evidence against Marina than any other character which made law enforcement’s lack of interest in her guilt odd, especially given her lack of cooperation investigating the true culprits. The facts and the behavior of the characters worked against each other throughout the book causing Johnson to do a big reveal in the end in order to make sense of the plot. This book just didn’t work for me. Surprising, because I truly enjoyed Johnson’s book Underestimated.

Intertwined craziness

Wow! If I thought the first two books were action-packed, that was nothing compared to this one! The best thing of all is how Marina learned to trust in the Lord. The characters were indeed very nicely intertwined. I will miss them, but I was blessed to read their stories. Very good!

Marina didn’t trust people, they always let you down, betrayed her. Like what was going on with her nursery, missing funds, now add a missing body. Officer Steven was out in area, to catch drugs being delivered, when he came upon the shooting.

Once twice three times....

Seemed like every turn Marina was being attacked. Good action thru out, enjoyed the twists and turns. BUT MOSTLY enjoyed the message that God does not give a spirit of fear and good does come out of the ashes.

Not a Realistic Story

The style is somewhat stilted and a bit hard to follow at times. I really didn't care for the personalities of the two main characters-the detective was always nervous/edgy/often angry and didn't seem professional to me while the owner of the landscaping business didn't act rashly, always darting Into danger and screamed often when angry/frustrated. The Christian aspect was underdeveloped with mostly just talking about how they should go to Church until very near the end.

Marina Acres is driving to her business to get some paperwork when a man darts into the street and smashes through her windshield. Steven Pennington has suspected drug activity at Acres and Fields Nursery and is pursuing a suspect when he stops to check on someone the suspect nearly ran over and then shot at. Both are suspicious of different mysteries at the nursery. Steven is trying to keep Marina safe while they try to catch the people who endangered her life and may be involved in illicit activities. They both have scars from their pasts but can't deny that there's a spark between them. Can they solve the mysteries and stay alive long enough to explore their budding feelings?

It was an engaging read. I was curious to find out what was really going on and who was behind it all. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the main characters from the other two books made an appearance in the book.
