In a futuristic society, fate is decided by genetics, and love is only for the elite.
The mark appeared while I slept and can’t be ignored. I must present myself to the Consulate and from there… I don’t know what happens. While I’ve been taught the mark is an honor, I have no idea what it means. Questioning isn’t encouraged. I must obey. My change in status exposes me to a violent side to society that I never suspected. Brings me to a strange and wondrous place known as the surface, where I am immersed in a different way of living. I discover pleasure. Am involved in intrigue. Learn about lies and different perspectives of the truth. I must also make a choice between a man who is part of the caste system and the one who would destroy it.
Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .
I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
Content Warnings: Sexual scenes, violence, classism, gun violence, slavery, sexual assault, attempted rape, and loss of body autonomy. Mention of: forced pregnancies, rape, and genocide.
That's my first thought upon completing this story.
The beginning had me fully committed...I thought we were getting a book with divided classes that also had a rebellion intent on making the world a better place. I was excited to see the world through our main character's eyes as she realizes the injustice of the world she's grown up in and that she would join and aid the rebellion to help form a better path for all. What we end up getting is a disgusting rebellion leader who only seeks to take down the powers that be so that he can be the power. There was no altruistic motive on his part he's merely enraged that he was demoted and now seeks to be the ultimate power as is due him *hard eye roll*
This story had so much potential and it just felt wasted...by the end although we now believe our main character is with a truly good man and that he's making changes to their society to improve all lives, not just the lives of those above ground BAM the author throws us a curveball that in fact, he is one of the ultimate powers that put this entire social structure in place. In truth, he is one of the powers that caused a major wipe of most of the world's population and is himself immortal.
I really thought I was going to love this story going in and I was just left completely disappointed.
This tried to be something but it wasn’t very good. I was going in for the tropes of dystopian romances but nup, it tried to hard to have “twists” that weren’t executed clearly.
An interesting take on capitalism and dystopias. This leaned a little bit too far into the excusionist side though, like I can appreciate a revolutionary in a dystopia to actually be the bad guy for once, but why crawl up the elite's ass so hard? There was really no need for that. Especially not since the MC is in a very, very unhealthy relationship (bordering toxic), what with the power imbalance at play and she basically based her whole sense of ethics on the love she felt for her captor (Stockholm syndrome anyone?) and the fact that he taught her "pleasure". Like, what even was that about? I also always love the portrayal of people with their sex drive and sexual attraction muted or turned off by drugs as mindless robots, as if sexual attraction and sex drive is what motivates everything, every emotion or thought, in life (and by love I mean hate with a burning passion). If that's the only thing that makes you a human being or motivates you to act like one, dear author, I have some really bad news for you. Jokes aside, the ending was pretty brilliant tbh. It was such a great plot twist after all the absolutely not great plot twists before, I'm just wondering if that was supposed to be a set-up for a sequel or if Langlais just wanted to mess with the readers (I hope it's the latter, just because that's such power move lol).
I thought there was supposed to be a bigger meaning to the story, but there was not. This really wasn't a romance - there was no development and the "love" was so twisted and extremely problematic. Even if the characters were actually logical and ethical, the romance would still not have been sufficient. This is my third time giving this author a try and a huge disappointment yet again. Will not be making this mistake again.
Trigger warnings: Rape and sexual assault. Harassment. Massacres and terrorism. Lack of bodily rights. Forced ''breeding''.
I think I picked this up as a 2-for-1 deal on audible, thinking it looked interesting. And while it was interesting for the first two chapters or so, it soon lost its allure with tedious drama. The world was interesting enough, but it felt like we got such a meager look at it, and then the whole epilogue happened, effectively undermining it all.
Dystopia but the premise is just not for me! I couldn't get into it...same YA novel formula here. Girl gets taken outta her pathetic life to learn things she never knew about the world...one man buys her, one is trying to bring the end to this "new world". Just wasn't enough to keep me interested...marked for procreation, yeesh!
I got an email about this and decided to give it a shot. I actually was enjoying it. I wish the world was explained a little better in the beginning. However, I hated that the ending ruined the entire book. It came out of nowhere and just didn’t fit wasn’t a fan.
For a dystopian short, it was pretty good. Very graffic, which doesn’t come as a surprise for dystopian fiction. Didn’t hold back any punches. The ending was a bit abrupt and surprising!
If I had just one word for this story it would be simply — wow. As it is I’ll be very careful in what I say because it is easily spoiled by too much information before someone first picks it up to begin reading.
The Marked is an intricate look at what might happen in humanity’s future should we not take care of the planet right now. Before you click away, this story is not preachy or political in any shape or form… but it does have the background of what happens when populations get out of control and climate changes are ignored for decades. There are color levels to the caste system in this world Grey is the lowest functioning human designated to mundane, work-based life in the Caves. Unless the females become Marked, it is then when a few lives change, for the better or for the worse is unique to each person – but they do have one purpose now, to breed.
There is so much that I loved about The Marked. While entertaining, it also made me think about knowledge, and how one would react to a strange world without the basic knowledge that we grow up with as, well, naturally learning about our world. To see it through the Heroine’s eyes is rather shocking as it is clearly made apparent that what I think of natural she sees as new, possibly frightening, or delightful. There is an innocence, a naiveness that hovers over the Heroine even when she should have begun to learn things, like truth from a lie. I’ll admit that I gave her the benefit of the doubt on every occurrence because I could not imagine “not knowing” something so basic to the point of fear of making the wrong choice.
At this point, I’m going to say you, the reader needs to discover this world first-hand, experience the innocence, the terror, the emotions… and one twist that I never in a lifetime would have seen coming. I loved every moment spent in this world. It is a standalone title, but I can see where it could branch off into other stories yet I’m not certain if they’d have that same shock moment with the information given in the Epilogue.
Pick this one up, don’t peek at the final page, and lose yourself in the future, with danger, love, betrayal, innocence… and that ending. Just wow.
Dystopian science fiction with a pretty cool world concept. Except I hate the main turning point and what happened between the MC's. Ruined any feels that I had for the couple.
I found this story to be fairly predictable, only a couple of surprises at the end (some fun and others eye roll worthy). The writing was okay, nothing special and made me cringe sometimes. The protagonist was relatable and interesting, which kept me going wanting to know if she was going to get her happily ever after.
I wasn't expecting this to be a romance (don't know why) but it wasn't bad. The sex wasn't too graphic and set up a nice atmosphere. Something about the relationship felt a bit fast and forced to me, but I thought that the portrayal of the protagonist's ignorance and naivety realistic.
The world building and portrayal was great, there was just the right amount of information at the right times and felt believable most of the time.
frustating one - reminded me of a capitalism vs communism under a dictatorship. we can continue the current system that leads to human demise and part of the population living in poverty (or in this book - being human slaves and used for breeding) orrrrr we can go with the rebel cause which is "do what we say or we eliminate you. everyone gets a say and everyone gets a share of the wealth as long as they obey". like why are these the only 2 options here and why are we supposed to be happy with the side she ends up on???
also the main character was basically a victim of human trafficking - literally told her purpose is to breed and then sold to the highest bidder
If you like stories such as Hunger games, Divergent, and Fallout, you may like this. At times I thought this was more for Teens or a little older but I don't remember if there was spice to this story and till I either remember or want to reread it, it will remain there.
This has its own feel and lore that is created to stand out from other Dystopian out there but I feel it was lacking something from making it rank among the big titles.
I feel a few things could of been fleshed out a bit more in helping progress the connections between people, (without giving away spoilers.) and others she got a good foundation on and I would of wanted a bit more.
This was a complete surprise that I chose because it was the "Audible Deal of the Day". I have actually read books by this author before, but this was not a particular series that I was familiar with from her when I clicked the "buy" button..
I think this might have been a novella, or a "one off" and it was interesting. I came into it completely cold without any idea of the plot and it definitely held my interest. At some point, I began to become annoyed, but it didn't make me too upset and solved the story arc climax in a way that left me feeling fairly good.
This was an easy listen and ended up being a captivating story.
This was actually an audio book read, but so far that edition does not exist on GR.
Short, yet complete. And great narrator.
I am compelled to say the politics of the book are certainly on the conservative end of things: appreciate the government is doing what is best for everyone, revolutionaries are motivated by selfish goals, all people are happiest when they accept their role in the social body, violence perpetuated by the state is for a good reason, women, once pregnant are fulfilled.

I received the first 3 chapters in a newsletter from Eve Langlais. I was hooked. The premise seem scary in light of today's happenings, but I wanted to know how it ended. This story of power and who wields it and the consequences of greed and selfishness has me loving the story, looking for more along this line, and keeping more tuned in to what is happening around the world.
You are never sure what you are going to get with a dystopian story, what twist are they going to give you? That is part of the appeal, and this one definitely delivered on it! Each time something new is unveiled, a new and different perspective and understanding is presented. When it came to the end of the story, the final turn just seemed natural, considering all that had come before, and how well we got to know our couple. I loved this story and how the relationship unfolded <3
This was a weird book. There was a romance that made little sense, except as a case of Stockholm Syndrome. Then, there was a class struggle as a way to save the planet that had more to do family hatred than anything else. One would expect the class struggle and saving the planet to be preeminent, but no. Then, the epilogue twisted everything into a different story. The book was strange and disturbing - not in a good way.

This is a post apocalyptic book where a young girl wakes up and finds out she has been marked. With the mark she is asked to remove herself from the cave she has worked in her entire life to the surface where she realizes there is an entire other world. She has to decide if she will follow the rules of the new world or try and help those down below that don't even know there is a world outside of the cave they have lived in their entire lives.
I've never given a one-star review, but I struggled to even finish this short book. There wasn't anything about this dystopian setting that set it apart from any hundreds of others out there. The characters were unlikable, and didn't reach redemption through their "redemption arcs." There were several graphic sexual scenes that seemed especially stark considering the length of the book, and the "romance" was not very romantic. The epilogue was interesting but couldn't redeem the book overall.
(2.5 stars)I listened to the audio version of this book. It was very short and somewhat simplistic. Although the system the main character is living in is deeply flawed (classism, forced breeding, slavery), she seems to come to terms with it. The strangest thing is that the epilogue suddenly throws in a weird twist. It felt like an afterthought to me, perhaps to set it up for a sequel. Not my cup of tea.
Having been raised in an underground cave system where everyone wore gray tunics and who had assigned chores, the main character is hesitant when she realizes she has been marked and must leave the underground community and start a new life. I thought this book was well written and had characters with very different personalities. The ending will take you by surprise!!
Run of the mill dystopia with an ignorant but slightly sassy protagonist who is sold as a sex slave, sexed thoroughly after tedious fish out of water interactions, and approached by a hilariously inept terrorist before the usual kidnapping and declarations of love. The epilogue turns it from an already unsatisfactory romance into a teaser for a better dystopian romance-less novel that doesn't exist, thus invalidating all that came before. Skip.
Wife was that ending! And I can't say anything or I'll ruin the book. Eve you mind is twisted girl. But I love it. You used to ask half way through what I thought and where I thought it was going. Well I thought I did till that epilog. This was a wonderfully weird but great book I so hope you write more. And turn it into a series.
This was definitely a different storyline, and I highly enjoyed it. I liked the MCs, but I couldn't quite give 5 stars. The story was brief and perhaps would have been bettered by expanding, but I am really pleased with how much Eve was able to squeeze out of the pages
Fantastic reading! A fascinating look into a dystopian world. Is this what we have to look forward to? Sebastian is so attractive- his love for Jasinda is so very appealing. Jasinda is an amazing woman! Taken from an extremely restricted life, gaining knowledge, falling in love, she shows unusual strength of character. I love her! The ending left me gasping…that’s all I’ll say! Fantastic reading!
