Reluctant psychic Billie Culpepper is baffled when she discovers an old arrest charge against her late mother, issued just days before she disappeared. When no further details are found, Billie turns to her occult allies for a glimpse into her mother's troubled past.
1994
As a single mom in a small town, Mary Agnes Culpepper is spinning a lot of plates at once. She waits tables at a local bar while establishing her career as a spiritual medium, and struggles to provide a stable home for her daughter. This proves to be difficult when something sinister slithers through one's family tree.
When 8-year-old Billie begins to see people no one else can, Mary fears her only child has inherited the family curse. Her fears are doubled when her daughter is left injured from a malevolent force that visits her in the night.
Adding to Mary's worries is a new client that she suspects is being abused by her violent partner and the unexpected return of Billie's father. Frank Riddel has a habit of disrupting Mary's life and now he's back once again. Claiming to be a changed man, he wants them to be a family again, but Mary suspects an ulterior motive behind his sudden return.
It isn't long before the spinning plates fall one by one, and the fate of Mary Agnes Culpepper, spiritualist and medium, takes its last, inevitable turn.
And just like that, we're done. This is the end of the series.
I honestly could have read twenty-five volumes in this series. McGregor, throughout the entire series, was endlessly inventive, and truly brought the horror, while absolutely keeping the series very real world, very grounded.
We were effortlessly dropped into the lives of all the characters that rolled through these eleven installments.
But let's talk about this one. Because this? This one's special. This was mostly the story of Mary Agnes, so the bulk of the book took place in 1994, during Mary Agnes's last days. It's a harrowing story, and yet, it's one we see played out every day.
McGregor handles it all with his usual incredible skill. If I have any complaints, it's that, of all the books, this one felt a bit rushed toward the end. And, I would have liked to see some of the major side characters get a bit more airtime.
That being said, as stated earlier, this series is truly grounded in the real world, and in the real world, lives are messy. They don't necessarily have neat beginnings, middles, and ends, and true to form, that's how this wraps up.
Like a bunch of people that you hung out with for quite a while, shared a few laughs and tears, but sort of drifted away from, and now occasionally wonder how they're doing.
I've read all eleven books and enjoyed them all. I do believe there are things we can't see and understand, but that doesn't make them untrue. These are fiction stories but the author made them feel plausible. I hope he wants to keep going because the characters are engaging and the stories are fun. Happy reading.
I would recommend this book series to anyone who enjoys reading about the mystical. The stories are well developed. The characters are described thoroughly. I had a hard time putting it down.
Another fantastic entry in the Spookshow chronicles. The author is thinking of making this the last one, but I sure hope there is more to come. There is gold in them thar hills (storylines). Would love to see more of Gantry and Kaitlin and Cordelia. And Billie's cousin and and and...
Spookshow is one of my favorite series. I’ve read the series several times and it never disappoints. Spiritualist & Medium is no exception. Wonderful read!!
When a book series continues to 11 volumes it is expected that the quality would diminish but I didn't expect it from a Spookshow book. And I was right. The book is good. I was invested to know the circumstances in which all that happened books ago, did happen. It was a pleasure to meet these characters, their background stories, the roles they played. I cannot bypass the nudges thrown in here and there . I want more.
Dear Tim, I also read the note at the end of the book and please, please write more Spookshow. Don't let this be the last one. If you get an idea what could happen to Billie and the band, please be brave and write it down for us. I will preorder it for my Kindle the moment it gets out... again.
I will also try other series from Tim McGregor - I am now a dedicated fan (from Bulgaria!).
When everyone met on the road across from the well, I had a feeling that this could be the last book in the series. I thought that everything had come full circle. I even teared up. But I told myself to look at other books you've written and take a chance on them.
I definitely am a slow reader, but I cannot put these books down. I read this book in 2 days. That is unheard of for me. I love the Characters, the love, the emotions I go through with them. The discoveries, the anger I share at the hypocrisy. I’m in love with this series. It never disappoints.
Most series have their ups and downs; some installments are better than others. The Spookshow is golden all the way through. This was my second time reading the series, and imagine my surprise at two new books. Thanks, Tim. Hope they talk you into one more, so Tom can go home.
This story was a great read and a heap really good ending? the to the Spookshow series.I have enjoyed all of the stories in this series.I have been scared, excited, sad and thrilled. What else do you want in a brilliant read? Recommended. Note to self find more by this author.
Waited a long time for this book to come out. Again I wasn't disappointed. Thank you for writing these wondering books. This was totally wonderful, especially being able to learn so much about Billie's mom and her past. So hope this isn't the last book.
I truly enjoy reading this series. I have read them all and have though each one was the last. I really hope there is one more and justice is found for Billie's mom.
This has to be my favourite of the series! Please let there be more! I love the way it ended I needed confirmation but I didn’t because I knew…. But Mary Agnes and Billie are just amazing.
I don’t know where you could go from here with Billie’s story. Maybe a glimpse in to Toms history. Or why he found Billie. To find out he was there……. I’m really intrigued by that relationship and would love more!!!!
Read it in 2 days - Tim never disappoints and I didn’t want it to end. I knew what he would say lastly in the write up and sincerely hope that it’s not true!! I want more
As with the entire series, I truly enjoyed this book. It answered a lot of questions I had in the prior books. I kind of hate to see it all end. An extraordinary series.
