Hijinks and Hot Flashes

Rate this book
Life's a witch, and then you die. Unless you're me. One hundred forty years in, my body won't quit. Sure, I'm slower than I used to be, and I can't complete a simple task without setting off a chain reaction of pain in my joints. But my heart keeps on ticking. Immortality is my curse. It's also my greatest blessing. I've lived long enough to see my daughter come back from the dead. But she's not the only magical being to show up in Marshmallow. There's trouble like our magical little town has never seen. I fear my coven of fledgling witches aren't prepared for the battle ahead. I must rise to the challenge or risk losing my coven, my town, and my daughter for the second time.

This book opens with Molly and Fernando at the farmer's market. Fernando is disguised as a dog and she's hoping he doesn't mess up like last time. Last time he was a child and well let's just say that didn't work out very well. She's buying apples and berries to make a dessert for the celebration with her coven later. Unfortunately, by the time they get home, she's in too much pain with her arthritis and after taking pills falls asleep. When she wakes it's time to go and the apples have all been eaten by Fernando.

She's just entered Robertini's and sees Remedy and Jennifer sitting together with their backs to her and Brianna on the other side of the table. She's about to join them when the door opens behind her, when she turns, she's shocked and can't move. Standing there in the same clothes she died in is Molly's daughter Lily. From the last book we know that this is totally possible, but Molly was convinced it couldn't happen since she witnessed the pshachacha snap Lily's neck.

As Fernando drives them home, Lily says she's still processing what happened and Molly doesn't press, but as they approach home, she feels a surge of energy, and she begins to shrink. Lily hands her a mirror and she can't believe her eyes, she's a child. When she tries to reverse it she can't. It seems she's stuck at least for now.

When they arrive home, a buru is loose and startles her more than it should have. Then Molly thinks she sees Lily's father Oscar, but that couldn't be. He died many years ago, before Lily was born.

Molly dreams of the time when Lily was a child and she found Fernando. It's a pleasant memory and when she wakes, she finds she's still a child. She goes to her storage area and finds clothing that fits. She has chores and a shop to open. When she knocks on Lily's door there's no answer. She finds a note on the shop counter from Lily, she'd gone back to work without talking to her.

We follow Molly through her day and a very uncomfortable encounter with Oscar's brother Ambrose who says he's come because of family. Meaning her and Lily. Molly considers that connection loose since she was only friends with Oscar, and they never married. We see Murray as he picks up his order and delivers a cookie to Molly, one to be opened on Halloween.

We meet Isla the muse in this one, she runs a paint night where she encourages people to find their true selves. Molly attends occasionally to find those they need to watch out for. This time Isla wants a read on someone who's been attending but not participating. Attendance has increased since Molly's coven became official.

We learned in the last book there is one more person who should be in Molly's coven, Angela Louise Chambers. She thinks that's who is coming to the class, and as it turns out Brianna comes with her. Ambrose is also in attendance and after they once again have words he leaves. Molly follows him and leaves Brianna to watch for the woman, Isla wants the read on. As she looks for him, his trail leads to an alley, where someone hits her over the head, and she falls unconscious.

While unconscious she has a dream about a long ago encounter with Ambrose over a music box gifted to her by Oscar. When she wakes, she realizes where she is but everything hurts. She quickly makes the discovery she's no longer a child and as such is barely dressed. She also discovers she has no phone or keys.

Remedy finds her after she'd been missing for seven hours. At Molly's the rest of their coven and their spouses waited. Fernando takes charge and gives them tasks so Molly can gather herself and make herself presentable. She tells them everything about Lily and Ambrose, and then Brianna stays with her for the night. They are interrupted by an appearance by Angela who once again says cryptic stuff. They do get a bit of an answer about Angela and her magic which she describes being stuck in a time loop much like the movie 'Groundhog Day'. They don't quite understand it. However, Angela is persistent in the fact that she has to stop the world from ending.

There is just so much going on and Molly's dreams of the past are quite vivid. It's also disturbing to her when Ambrose is with Lily when she comes home. Molly also gains control of her magic enough to turn back the clock so she's forty. No pain and more energy but hot flashes from hell.

The situation with Ambrose definitely grabbed my attention. He practically tells her he loves her.

To say there are many twists in this book is definitely an understatement. Angela turns up in all sorts of places, Lily gets an assignment that involves Molly and her Coven, Ambrose discloses how he is still alive and that also reveals a further connection with Lily. So much fun and so many surprises as we meet more residents of Marshmallow. Along with some visitors who are there for more nefarious reasons.

Once again, I couldn't put this book down. Since I borrowed this as the boxset of the final two books, I am already reading the next one.

This book continues the Midlife Magic in Marshmallow series from Molly's point of view. The Marshmallow "regulars" are here: Brianna, Remedy, Jennifer, Fernando, and their significant others. Molly's daughter, Lily, who was thought to be dead, returns from wherever she was. There are many questions for her to answer. Suddenly Molly reverts to a child. Then Lily's father's brother shows up, who had always made life difficult for Molly. She hates him and doesn't trust him, but Lily accepts him. Now Molly finds she can control her age, a new magical power. Someone threatens to take over her coven. Her relationships with Lily and especially with Ambrose improve. Molly's nemesis from her youth returns to take her coven, all their powers, and finally kill her. How she, her coven, and friends escape certain death is an exciting climax with a satisfying conclusion. But the stage is set for the imminent end of the world in the next book, as predicted and experienced numerous times by Angela.

Molly and the gang

Another adventure filled with magic unique creatures, her coven, and so much. The magic world has dangers and new possible friends. Figuring out which can be the challenge. Molly has dreams of the past or are they dreams? Her powers take an unexpected turn. Characters and experiences make for a dangerous time. She'll need the help of her friends, her coven, and maybe even some enemies to work through all of it this time. Oh, and of course, Fernando is there by her side to help or hinder depending on the situation and his mood.

Where do we find ourselves starting the story at? What is Fernando doing? What happens at Robertini's? Who is Lily? What do we learn? Who is or was Oscar? Where is he seen and by whom? What is a buru? What odd thing has happened to Molly? What else has happened around her that is werid? I loe Fernando's nickname for Brianna. Who are Angela, Ambrose, Kaitlyn, and Harriet? What threats has Molly received? Oh goodness, that was crazy good!!!! If I could give more than 5-stars, I would!

Hijinks and Hot Flashes, book 4 of Keira Blackwood's Midlife Magic in Marshmallow brings in her characters to the series. There are new friends, old enemies, family, and paranormals a plenty. Molly has to figure out one twist after another. When you can't trust your own past, how can you see the present much less the future clearly. Hang on tight things are going to get rough.

This is Molly's story and it's a whopper. Molly's power has changed again, increasing with the strength of their working coven. The past comes calling as well & Molly must come to terms with her fears. Surprises are around every corner as our girls face down another life or death situation.

Love it to pieces ❤️

This story wrapped up so much for me to understand Molly better. I can't wait to read more and hope that we can have more back stories on the men in the lives of these magical women.
