Thorn in His Side

Okay, fair warning, you need to enter this book with a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, because the main point of the plot is... well, not believable.

BUT! If you can do this, you are for a very enjoyable ride. The characters are loveable, there are a pup and a very smart horse. A villain who is the cusp of villainy and deserves all the hate you're able to manage. A battle fought with a gardening spade, a meat cleaver and the help of the aftermentioned pup and horse.

It's romantic, and it even has a bit of exciting action at the end, and a fairy-tale HEA, so go ahead and give it a try. You know you want it :P

A Right Royal Affair
A classic fairytale, with queer characters... and that's quite a nice thing :P

What we have here is romance at its purest, and, although it usually doesn't work for me, this one did. Probably because I really liked both MCs, and maybe I was in the mood for this, who knows why a story actually click with us?

A true Cinderfella story, with evil stepfather and stepbrothers, the grandmother as the fairy godmother, and a pair of red Converse as the glass slippers (nice Dr Who's touch, that one!). And a prince charming who is actually very lovely.

A nice, entertaining and sweet romance =D

Hair Out of Place
Now, if you thought you couldn't have a tension-filled scene that it's also hilarious, think again. Or just read/listen to this book *laughs* That said, this was the one I enjoyed less. Mostly, because I wasn’t able to respect Griff even a little bit. He did for an awful knight, TBH. I liked Raphie, though :P

Kieran Flitton's narration is wonderful, so there is that, too :D

I am on a fairy tale binge this month and I really liked this one as well. all three stories are fun to read and as I listened to the audiobook I was really enjoying Kieran Flitton bringing the stories to life.
it was my first time listening to him but I really loved his voice with these stories.

Thorn by his side
this one is a rather unique version of Beauty and the Beast as I am not quite sure, why Darius is considered beastly. He has a great character and although he looses his temper one, he is a real warm and lovely person.
Joshua is a bit naive and for me he seems a bit spoiled - not with physical things but spoiled nevertheless.
but I really liked how their relationship developed and although the big scene at the end was a bit too dramatic, I really enjoyed the story

A right Royal Affair
this was lovely although a bit unbelievable but that is why it is a fairy tale ... and I really enjoyed reading it because although it is unbelievable, I only recognized that after listening to the whole story and thinking about it. so, it is perfectly written and real fairy tale.
I loved James and Theo and the whole secondary characters (especially Klara was a hoot). Both MCs have their insecurities and it shows ... it was so well written. the big misunderstanding at the end was not so believable but that does not matter.
loved the story

First of all, Kieran Flitton is a remarkable storyteller. I don't know that these stories would have held my interest with a different narrator. His work was incredible.

All three books are retellings of fairy tales including Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Rapunzel. Each has been retold as m/m romance and given a bit of a unique twist that only Helen Juliet can pull off.

I really adored each story. They were sweet and fun, a bit heavy on the sweet, but they are modern day retellings, so I had to let that go. If you like fairy tales and happily ever afters, this is a perfect boxed set. Each story is charming and delightful!

I've always loved a good twist on a classic fairytale, and this collection had three amazing adaptations of old favorites! With the perfect blend of swoony romance, magical adventures, and modern struggles, each story captured my attention and swept me away on a thrilling and unexpected journey. Kieran Flitton's narration was outstanding in every single instance, and I'm impressed by how deeply he made me feel each character's emotions as I followed along. I'm really happy I gave this audio a chance and can't wait to work my way through the rest of this author's backlist!

Thorn in His Side: 5/5 stars

I found this fairytale adaptation fascinating--with plenty of unique aspects to leave me on the edge of my seat and all of the "fairytale magic" I could have hoped for. Joshua was such a sweetheart, and even though Darius tried to hide it he was a big ol' softie too. The early stages of their relationship were so freaking cute, and I felt practically giddy at every tiny gesture or small step forward the two of them made. Victor was cartoonishly villainous at times, and I seriously cannot believe how deep his hatred of Darius ran. Despite his attempts to make Joshua and Dariu miserable, the two of them did manage to carve out a slice of happiness. It filled me with so much joy to see how content and in love they were, and even though I was constantly afraid of what scheme Victor would cook up next, I also had hope that everything would turn out okay. Their romance was a much slower burn than I expected, but the sweet hesitant way they pursued each other only softened my heart more. If I ever doubted that Darius truly cared for Joshua, the way he let him go to check on his family showed me they were serious about each other. After climbing to such soaring highs, I should have known to expect horrific consequences from Victor and his minions, but I was shocked by how scary and dark this story got towards the end. When Darius and Joshua were at their lowest point, it was their conviction that their love was real that got them through it. It was incredibly satisfying to see Victor meet a fate he deserved and watch Joshua and Darius ride off into the sunset together.

A Right Royal Affair: 5/5 stars

James and Theo's romance had all the elements of a classic fairytale thoughtfully re-interpreted into the present day. Their story somehow captured both the whimsical magic of Cinderella and modern-day themes of found family and acceptance. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to their disastrous first meeting and seeing how it led them to an entirely unexpected business relationship. James was lovably awkward about exposing his secret to Theo, and the sweet way they fumbled through courting never failed to make me smile. The two of them may have seemed like an unlikely pairing, but their connection felt so natural and effortless at times that I couldn't imagine a scenario where they didn't end up together. I was a bit disappointed to see them fall victim to lies and miscommunication towards the end, but thankfully it didn't take either man long to come to their senses. I also wasn't thrilled by the way things left off with the royal family--I wish they had been forced to make a public statement of support instead of the last-minute loophole. Even without the pivotal turning point I was hoping for, Theo and James ended up exactly how I wanted them to: happily in love and able to live out their lives in peace.

Hair Out of Place: 5/5 stars

This delightfully re-imagined version of Rapunzel took me on an exciting journey full of steamy moments and sweet bonding between Griff and Raphael. Precious Sparrow kitty was an unexpected gem in this story, and the way Griff and Raphael showered her with affection showed me what wonderful people they were before I knew anything else about them. Amidst the intoxicating sexual tension and lighthearted get-to-know-you conversations, these two had to battle against surprisingly dangerous people and pull off a high-stakes mission to get Raphael to safety. I loved reading about their action-packed encounters as much as I loved swooning over their obvious attraction and inability to resist each other. Despite the rushed timeline and threat of death looming over their heads, Griff and Raphael's romance felt refreshingly realistic and not like insta-love at all. It was so much fun to see gruff, stoic Griff fall for such a sunshine-y and happy Raphie, even as Griff battled with himself over his responsibilities as a bodyguard. When the two of them did explore their chemistry, I was overwhelmed by how wildly passionate and unbelievably hot they were together. I was so caught up in the lighthearted fairytale of a romance that it took me completely by surprise when reality barged back in with its ugly brutality. Griff and Raphael had to fight every step of the way, despite brief moments of respite, and I was breathless with anticipation to see what would happen once Raphael made it to his final destination.

Helen Juliet (aka HJ Welch) is an absolute wizard with her special brand of M/M fairy tale retelling. A bit darker, deeper, and richer than most--our writer goes back to the original 'flavor' of fairy tales that weren't 'brightened' by Disney. Each story is a full-sized book with incredible world-building and awesome character development. The pacing of the narrative elements in each book is impeccable, leaving readers turning the page until the last word is read!
First, she focuses her energy on my personal favorite Beauty and the Beast with her very own 'Thorn in His Side', lovely both inside and out, young Joshua Bellamy is paired with former Captain Darius Legrand in a twisted power game designed by his cruel father. The forced marriage between Joshua and Darius will serve to save the Bellamy family from financial losses incurred when a ship sunk leaving everyone involved penniless. In spite of his foul temper, a remnant of the military service that has left him scarred physically and emotionally--he can't help being drawn to Joshua. But he knows he must temper his feelings as his father is anxious to destroy anything wonderful, especially if it is something or someone that makes Darius happy.
In the Cinderella retelling titled 'A Right Royal Affair', Prince James sixth in line to the British throne has always been a bit of a misfit in the royal family. His bisexuality is just another way he does not quite fit in. Meeting Theo Glass at an event to honor her charity work has left the prince both taken and quite shaken. He convinces Theo to organize a fundraiser ball for him, needing something to do and wanting another reason to encounter Theo. But Theo is no closet case and James will have to come out in order to have him.
'Hair Out of Place' is Helen Juliet's special spin on the Rapunzel story featuring an absolutely gorgeous-looking man, natural platinum blonde, forest green eyes, super sweet virgin, prince born-out-of wedlock, two awesome mothers, kind-natured, very long hair, a bodyguard with a good heart, a foreign kingdom to claim, and one exceptionally glorious girl cat. And those were the boxes that I checked off. And the bells that were rung? A group of the most hilariously incompetent assassins imaginable! They were immensely funny (except for that one time later in the book when two of them DEFINITELY were not, dang buttheads!) Non-binary, which explains the very long hair. One terribly terrific twelve-year-old half-sister! In addition, international travel to places in Europe as well as unexpected kindness, tolerance, and compassion! Those were absolutely priceless! The buttons that were pushed? The beloved cat that gets loose! Oh, no! In addition, there is a noble willingness of self-sacrifice on the part of the bodyguard who had fallen in love with the prince.
Readers will not find a finer collection of M/M fairy tale retellings all in one book. And the audiobook is beautifully narrated by the simply incredible Kieran Flitton! His performance for each story is as exceptional as Helen Juliet's take on the tale. I'm looking forward to more, much more from this gifted writer!

A scarred and angry war veteran forced into an arranged marriage with the son of his father's business partner... a dashing prince and a working class Essex boy whose relationship could destabilise the monarchy, or restore its reputation... and an enby who dreams of the world finally gets to set foot into it, along with his bodyguard who must protect him from the inept assassins out to get him before he can claim his birthright. These contemporary retellings of Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Rapunzel tell the stories of handsome princes who don't need a princess to have a happy ending.

I'm in my Romance era... after a weekend at #RARE24Edinburgh, I'm all about the love, in whatever form it comes. So it felt like a good time to pick up this book, which has been on my Kindle Unlimited subscription for a while now. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed these - I went in with relatively low expectations, and found that both the BatB and Cinderella retellings far exceeded them. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the Rapunzel retelling; it was a very cute and fuzzy story, but it felt less 'real' than the others: while I'm very clear that none of the premises are particularly realistic, this one did stretch the bounds of believability just a little bit. For example, the completely useless assassins which just came across as badly written slapstick, playing to the peanut gallery. There was just no need - having "proper" assassins would probably have made the story more dramatic IMO!

That being said, each of the main characters were beautifully built upon, relying on your knowledge of the traditional fairytale for their base but then branching out and making them into something different. There's certainly familiar tropes involved in setting up the relationship and and power dynamic, but even with all of these familiar elements none of the characters were simply stock parts. Plus their chemistry is hot!

The author also manages to explore and enlighten on several facet of the LGBTQIA+ experience without it feeling forced. The relationship development feels totally natural (if expedited for the sake of pacing) - the characters' sexuality is what it is and there is no reason for the reader to question otherwise. Bringing to the foreground issues of gender identity, bisexuality, age differences, homophobia and social/moral expectations, every difficult moment that arises is dealt with with the utmost respect.

I'd probably say that Cinderella is the strongest of the three stories. It's certainly something that should be reflected upon; it's bound to happen one day that a person in the direct line of succession to a throne somewhere in the world identifies as something other than heterosexual and cisgender, and it will be interesting to see what the reaction is.

Very pleased to have read this, and I may go looking for some more of the author's work...

THORN IN HIS SIDE
I am a huge fan of retold fairytales and Thorn in His Side ticked all my boxes. Darius has spent a miserable life being the pawn of his truly evil father. His scars earned in the military make him feel hideous. He acts brutish but underneath all that pain is a wonderful man. Joshua begins his forced marriage to Darius as a meek man. I loved seeing him grow into a strong, confident one. The supporting characters add a wonderful layer to the story. All of them come together to defeat sinister plans and form a beautiful family.

A RIGHT ROYAL AFFAIR
James and Theo have a brief, unpleasant first encounter and I was impressed that Theo stood up for himself. I was even more impressed when James went to the trouble to track Theo down at home and apologize. Having Theo plan his big charity ball keeps them in close proximity and of course, their attraction is plain to see. I loved how the entire staff helped push these two together. I loved that Theo tries so hard to protect James. Jame's bravery showed what a wonderful man he was. The ending was the perfect ending for fairy tale lovers.

HAIR OUT OF PLACE
Fantastic! This reimagined Rapunzel is elevated by a wonderful, caring mother, a team of security and tutors that see themselves as 'family', and a new hot bodyguard who proves his mettle the first day on the job. The whole thing starts with a literal bang and is full of action, bungling assassins (I loved the 'ninja'), and a quest to reach the kingdom in time. This comes off as a spy movie from the '60s or '70s. The ballroom scene was fabulous. Raffi is a wonderfully kind and sunny non-bi man and Griff spends most of the book trying to keep him at arm's length. I kinda wanted to smack him for not only running hot and cold with poor Raffi but his self-deprecating inner monologue. I have to give him kudos for his immediate acceptance and appreciation of all facets of Raffi though. Sparrow is just the cherry on top.

Highly recommended book and author

Audiobooks: If you can get your hands on audio copies do it! This narrator deserves a round of applause for his take on each of the voices. Griff's 'Sean Connery' voice from HAIR OUT OF PLACE gave me shivers and I could picture Raffi from the voice alone. Each of the assassins was not only distinctive but hilarious. He manages to add distinction for each character in every book while beautifully conveying their personality and feelings. Bravo, Kieran Flitton!

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

A great collection of reimagined fairytales.

I really loved this collection of stories. I actually listened to two of them previously but somehow missed A Right Royal Affair so I was happy I received a free copy of this bundle for review.

Kieran Flitton did an excellent performance of these stories and he’s one of the main reasons I wanted to listen to them. I also enjoyed Helen Juliet’s reimaging of the fairy tales, even though one of them was really a bit over-the-top for me.

A Thorn in His Side was my favorite of the three stories. I love books with a fake marriage trope and thought that this one was really good. The audio of this story had a Victorian vibe to it for me even though set in present day.

This is a slow burn story about a timid MC who lacks confidence, and a vulnerable MC with war wounds who doesn't see how anyone could ever love him. In the end they both fight for their lives against a horrible monster. The last third of the book was particularly captivating for me and I couldn't stop listening until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning.

* * * * * *
A Right Royal Affair was also very good. The dogs in the story were really cute and I loved Theo. James was a little tedious at times but that was probably necessary to the overall storyline.

* * * * * *
Hair Out of Place
I enjoyed this story but Kieran Flitton’s audio performance is what really made it great for me. I love his voice and he really kept me engrossed in this one. The story was good, too, but a tad bit slow in places and a bit over the top in others. I really loved it as it neared the end because of the scenes with Raphie’s sister; she was just precious! Overall a very enjoyable audiobook and I’m glad I listened to it.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

This is a great collection of the retelling of 3 fairy tales full of action, drama, courage, and love.

Thorn In His Side-A great twist on the classic Beauty & The Beast fairytale. Darius is definitely a grumpy beast, but considering the horrible father that he has, you can't really blame him. Joshua is just the breath of fresh air that Darius needs to break the wall around his heart and start truly living again. Darius & Joshua may have been brought together by Darius' father to make each other miserable, but they sure showed him!

A Right Royal Affair-A great m/m twist of the classic Cinderella fairytale. It's a very sweet story, thankfully with little angst, and wonderfully romantic. Prince James and Theo are an unlikely pair but they work perfectly together. Their attraction and connection are undeniable.Theo is exactly who James needs to realize that he can't keep trying to be who others want him to be. I love how strong Theo is and that he always remains true to himself. They have to get over quite a few obstacles if they want their fairy tale HEA!

Hair Ou of Place-I love this story!! Griff is Raphie's bodyguard and has to get Raphie safely to another country so he can become king! Not only that, Raphie has led a very secluded life up until now because of the threat of his father. These two together are absolute fireworks, they are spectacular. I love watching their relationship grow as they travel together and it was great watching how they really protect one another. This story is full of drama, action, humor, great fashion, a protective cat, and lots of wonderful hot scenes.

The narrator was perfect for all of these stories. He does a spectacular job portraying all of the characters and really makes you feel the story. I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy of this audio book.

Narration = 5 stars

Such a fantastic performance. He had a very lovely accent and brought the story to life. He expressed all the emotions perfectly and did all the characters voices. Even his female voices were fantastic. I will definitely be checking out his other work.

Thorn in his Side = 3.75

I'm conflicted with how to rate this because at first I hated Darius but he grew on me. Whereas I loved Joshua from the start and even more as the story went on. Once they got on I thought they made a cute couple. The issues I have are with the plot. There are def some continuity issues. Is it modern times or ancient times? It bounced back and fourth rather contradictory in that matter. Then there's the lack of realism. I know it's suppose to be a fairy tale retelling but I just don't believe the premise and parts of the plot were way too unbelievable. In the end I think it's a cute love story with some steamyness and a interesting story that kept my interest from start to finish and I would recommend to anyone that likes fairytales. Just as long as you don't put too much thought into the technicalities like I did.

A Right Royal Affair = 3 stars

Unlike the first book that felt like a retelling of a fairytale like the series suggests, this book only had minor breadcrumbs that resembled the fairtale Cinderella (shoes, ths ball, and past history quickly explained). The main plot is less fairytale and more m/m version of Prince Harry. Don't get me wrong it was a cute story and both the MCs are very charming but I can only give it 3 stars as I'm listening to this in 2021 and I'm sick of hearing about the Royals especially Harry.

Hair out of Place = 2 stars

The couple was cute together but the story is too slow moving and I was so bored.

Unexpected Enjoyment

Well, I did pick this boxset because the concept intrigued me. But I wasn’t expecting it to be this good.

It kinda feels like little bits of things that could belong in other fairytales made it into the books while they still completely cling to the main stories that they were being based off of.

So the first one was beauty and the beast. I kind of felt like the dad was more of a beast than who is supposed to be the beast in the story. I kind of wish he died. That’s how bad he was. She, the author, had to do some kind of isolation that was imposed, and it works.

Then we have Rumple, but it felt like Cinderella by the end of it. That might be the one that I’m thinking of the most when I said the story uses bits of other stories in it’s telling.

Then we have one where we get Rapunzel and it’s a nice arch to the second and the first story. They were just kinda rich in the first story, in the second one you got a prince, and in the third one we end up with a king. Nope, I’m not talking about the hair.

Maybe the second story really is a combination of two fairytales because he kept referencing turning stuff into gold, but in the end there was the shoes. Not complaining, just pointing it out.

I wasn’t sure if the stories were in their own worlds or shared the same one until the third book.

This was a great read, I just got the next boxset. Something to do with Daddies, but still on the fairytale train.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Review Copy of this book.

These stories are best enjoyed if you view them as an alternate-universe. The stories are good, but there needs to be a certain suspension of disbelief to really enjoy them.

Thorn in His Side
The Beauty and the Beast retelling was good, though I think some elements felt a little forced to make them work with the fairy-tale. I felt so bad for Darius: an abusive father that controlled his life, the loss of his mother, the tragedy that ended his military service. Joshua took a little while to uncover the heart that Darius kept hidden, but I thought when they finally came together it was rather sweet. I do think this might have worked just a bit better in more of a historical setting, but I did enjoy the story.

A Right Royal Affair
Theo and James are from such different backgrounds. I thought this was a sweet Cinderella story (and not just because it's one of my favorite fairytales). I loved the Yorkies (each with their own personalities). I did think a few elements were a bit too easy at times (but isn't that how fairytales work). I thought James's sister was really sweet, it was clear how close they were. I also thought the castle staff were more friends than staff for James, it made him a bit more human.

I love fairy tale retellings and hurt/comfort trope romances, so I was in heaven listening to this audio book bundle - and all the more so thanks to the delicious voice and British accents of skilled narrator Kieran Flitton, who delivered compelling performances for all three books.

"Thorn in His Side" was my favorite of the three books, mainly because I adore the Beauty & the Beast fairy tale, and appreciated the author's adaptation with an opposites-attract arranged marriage/fake relationship, villainous father, some action/suspense, and soooo much heart-squeezing hurt/comfort. Joshua is sweet and innocent where Darius is gruff and jaded, but both are endearing, loving, and deep-feeling characters who make a delightfully unconventional (and smokin' hot) couple. Their hard-won HEA isn't all magic and roses, but is a swoony fairy tale ending all its own.

I'd already listed to the fun 5-star Rapunzel retelling "Hair Out of Place," which is a sweet opposites attract/age gap love story. I received this free review copy audio book bundle by request and have left this honest review voluntarily.

The Fairy Tale Collection is a bundle of three fantastic novels all inspired by classic fairy tales. Each of the books are set within a contemporary setting without any magic elements, but with a lot of drama and romance. The first book is Thorn in His Side, a Beauty and Beast retelling. The second book is A Right Royal Affair, which gives a hearty nod to Cinderella, and the last book is Hair Out of Place, a wild twist on the Rapunzel fairy tale. I loved this bundle – first because all the stories individually are fantastic and enthralling, and second because the bundle presents the books in the best reading order. I loved being able to dive immediately into the next book once I finished with the previous book. The audiobook was narrated by Kieran Flitton who does a fabulous job with each book. The audiobook bundle made it easy to binge the entire series.

~Very Enjoyable Retelling~

Overall, this was a very enjoyable listen. I read Thorn in His Side, but listening to it was just fantastic. Way better then what I had imagined in my head. I thought A Right Royal Affair was a little slow for my taste in the beginning, but the last three or so hours I was hooked. Hair Out of Place had lots going on and I enjoyed it. All the couples in these stories were really sweet and I liked the connection between them all. I will definitely be re-listening to this audio.

Kieran Flitton did an amazing job. He gave each character their own voices. During the emotional parts he did such a great job I felt myself get emotional right along side the characters. I can’t wait to hear more from Flitton as he is a wonderful narrator.

I love a classic fairy tale retelling. I enjoy to see all the twist and turns that come up different from a classic. This set covered: Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Rapunzel.

These were interesting fairy retellings. The stories were just close enough to know the fairy tale, but enough of a change to make it’s own mark on the fairy tale. The narrator was a little slow for me and I needed to speed up the listening to speed, by a lot. At times the narrator felt too calm or too relaxed for the story. I did enjoy his voice, but I had a problem separating the characters at times.

Overall, these were okay: 3 Stars.

This collection of modern fairytales was gorgeously written. The stories are complex, emotional, vivid, and passionate with well-earned happily ever afters. While they have some darker shades to them, the tone of the romance aspects is sweet and heartfelt. Author Helen Juliet and narrator Kieran Flitton swept me away into the world of these stories.

Thanks, Gay Romance Reads, for the audio ARC I received.

Firstly, the narrator was perfect for all these stories. I loved his accent, his inflections, all the things.

I do think you have to be a fan of fairy tales to appreciate these stories. They are set in modern times, and because they are fairy tales, reality isn't a thing. Which, fine by me, but if reality is your thing, then you're not going to appreciate these stories as much.

Overall, it was delicious brain candy being whispered sweetly in my air pods.

2 out of 3 ain’t bad

I give the first story (Beauty & The Beast) a 4, the second story (Cinderfella) a 4.5 and the third story (Rapunzel) a 3.5. In the second story I really liked Theo’s confidence and strong self-worth and needless to say Prince Charming, James, is definitely swoon material.

Good mix of everything

Enjoyed this book very much. Just the right mix of romance and edge of your seat excitement to keep you turning electronic pages. Some of the action required an extra suspension of believability because I just couldn’t force myself to buy that things would ever happen as they did in the book, but it wasn’t enough to lose my interest.

life is a fairytale.

Life can be a beast, life waiting for Mr right can be tough and the towering pressures for that white knight can make you want to pull your hair out but all and all I find dreams can come true. The birds sing the flowers bloom and you can make life wonderful smile and kiss him again. Remember, life is a fairytale.

not as good as I hoped

The first two in the bundle were ok, but not as good as some of her other books.
The third was not good. It felt really long. With a good read you just can’t put it down. With this I had a hard time finishing it.
These are fairytales. I expect a lot of suspending my disbelief, but this just felt ridiculous.

I read the first story and did really wonder would I go on and read the other two stories. I’m glad I did as they’re much better. They’re light hearted and easy reads. The type of stories you can put down for a while and return later when you need some no brainer reading.
