A stubborn business owner, a volunteer firefighter, a forgotten past, and an arsonist. Is it a recipe for love or disaster?

Élodie Paradis won't let two devastating fires and a theft stand in her way. She's set on keeping her family's Sugar Bush running like it has for one hundred years. She needs to hire a contractor to rebuild the cabin. The only available builder is a man she refuses to trust. He's burned her twice before, and she's fresh out of forgiveness.

Bastian Roy is fighting hard to leave his philandering reputation behind. As a volunteer firefighter, he strives to be a respected Eastwood resident. The perfect opportunity comes knocking when the town's jewel needs to be rebuilt. If he can figure out what grudge Élodie holds against him, it will be the best job to solidify his family legacy.

Tensions run hot between them, slipping from prejudice to friendship. Together, they'll build something new. But relationships are fragile when they're built on a shaky past. Especially when tragedy lurks just around the corner.

This small-town enemies-to-lovers slow burn is the first book in the Caribou River series but can be read as a standalone.

Firebreak is an #enemiestolovers romance with a typical bad boy, playboy character, but also with a very strong female protagonist who knows what she wants, who’s headstrong, a little stubborn and ambitious.

Elodie is running a farm, an entire family business, but a fire destroyed a huge part of said farm, so Bastian volunteer firefighter and builder takes on the job of rebuilding the houses that were destroyed in the fire.
I loved both of them. Bastian is the typical man throwing axes for sport (that one really made me giggle) and Elodie is straightforward but in the beginning also ice cold towards him, because of something that happened in the past.

All the hate between them though? It doesn’t hold long and pretty soon Bastian turns into a fool with her. An adorable fool with a tragic backstory. Something they both share, because both of our MCs? They had the worst kind of childhood. A childhood that broke my heart and that shocked me and made me cry. Because things like this? Especially when it came to little Bastian? No child should ever experience something like this at the hands of a parent. (This was something that was hinted at a lot in the beginning, but towards the end when everything was laid bare this really shattered my heart.)

Now, while I did think that the change from “I hate you” to “I think you’re decent” happened relatively quickly, the deep running emotions developed slowly. There were sweet and tender moments that made my heart swell, adorable moments that were almost too sweet to handle and just how they accepted each other the way they were was wonderful. And I loved being in their heads, but I preferred Bastian’s POV. His thoughts had something raw and vulnerable that made him unique. Reading his POV made me shed some tears more than once.

Of course there’s also drama. The thing with Maelle?? oh my… I really didn’t know whether she was just a lying manipulative b**ch or whether she was genuine, because in that case I could just pity her. And there are misunderstandings and the usual issue: Communication. What really stood out in Firebreak though, was that this book specifically showed that stuff doesn’t crumble to pieces because of only one person’s mistakes even if it might seem that way at first. It is always two people involved. Both have to work and think and realise their mistakes even if one of them made a really s*** move.

My biggest negative point is actually about the sub-plot in this book. Without saying too much about it, but the sub-plot in itself was really interesting, only it never was resolved. In the epilogue it was talked about as if this thing was now in the past, but we never got info about what happened surrounding this issue with the fires and I would’ve liked for there to be at least a short mention about finding the culprit.

Overall a really nice story, that has an important message, deep characters, cute moments and… as a special goodie; a recipe at the end. :D

Firebreak by Alexa Gregory was fine. It wasn't great, it wasn't bad, it was just kind of fine. Told in dual POV (my favorite) this enemies-to-lovers story was a little too light on the enemies for me, and was just a bit too long and drawn out for me to really love it.

I'll start with the positives. I liked Bastian (our hero) and I loved the idea of a Sugar Bush maple farm as our setting. It was a unique setting for a story and I had a great time literally pretending I could smell the syrup and the baked goods. The writing was humorous at times, which was enjoyable, and I loved the overall story behind it. I liked Elodie (for the most part) too, so it made it easy to root for the couple. It was an easy kind of relationship between the two of them which was a nice change of pace from some of the other stories I've read, and I also really enjoyed spending time with their friend group. All in all, it was enjoyable and fun and the few scenes we got were absolutely steamy.

Now, all that said, it was definitely too long, to the point where some of the inner monologues and even plot points got repetitive. It was drawn out way more than it needed to be and a lot of sections could have been cut out for sure, which made it hard for me to stay totally invested. Also, while this COULD be a standalone in a series, you really should read the first novel before you dive into this one. While I was able to piece it all together and follow the people pretty well, I was definitely at a disadvantage not having read the one that came before this, and I think that also detracted from my enjoyment (not the author's fault, just my own stupidity, but also a warning for others). I also hated the twist towards the end/drama that caused the breakup. There were SO MANY OTHER AVENUES the author could have taken, and the one that was chosen really kind of pissed me off, honestly. It was disappointing, and resulted in a lot of information about the characters being revealed at the end, when it would have been easier to support their choices and understand where they were coming from if it had been sprinkled throughout the story instead. Their reactions to "the event" were seemingly bizarre until AFTER we learned about their driving motivations and then I was like "oh I get it. Why didn't anyone say this earlier?" so that didn't help. Also, the heroine and hero weren't actually enemies? She hated him for a really petty and stubborn reason and he had zero ill will towards her, so just know it's not actually enemies-to-lovers, more like "heroine hates hero for some unknown reason but then they're fine" and then friends-to-lovers.

Long story short, it was a fine story, I enjoyed it for the most part, but it was way too long and had some issues that made me wish other choices had been made. If you choose to read this one, read Colson's story first. You'll enjoy this one a lot more if you do (I'm guessing. I don't honestly know, but I have a feeling I would have).

Many thanks to Inkslinger PR for my review copy!

This is a well written book with strong realistic characters and an entertaining story line. The author does a great job developing the story and had me glued to the pages with all the emotions flowing throughout. She moves the story fluidly with her vividly painted scenes and delivers another great book to the series.
I loved and would recommend this book.

Firebreak is the first book in the Caribou River series and it can be read as a standalone. It is an enemies to friends to lovers love story that I couldn’t put down.

There’re so many things to love in this book. It is beautifully written for starters. I really liked the storyline and how Bastien and Élodie get to start spending time together. I really enjoyed Élodie’s personality, especially her intensity. And Bastien is a great guy with a lot to prove, especially to himself. They are great together. They have so much chemistry you can almost feel the heat they create when they are together. And the banter is top notch. It is a bit of a slowburn, but the kind that keeps you reading without stopping. The buildup is so good though. The longing, the attraction, the second thoughts… it’s perfection.

The story is set in a Canadian Sugar Bush that produces maple syrup, so it has this lovely farm slash small town vibe. Bastien is a volunteer firefighter slash contractor, and there’s an arsonist on the loose, so there’s also an atmosphere of danger in the background that certainly hightens the intensity of the story.

I loved the side characters a lot. I definitely want to know more about them and read the next books in the series. They give depth to the story and help Bastien and Élodie gain some perspective. I love how Basien and Élodie’s relationship evolves, how they interact and how they make each other better people. How much they grow. They are people you can definitely relate to, and they are people I would love to have as friends. I really loved Firebreak and would highly recommend it.

Sometimes people deserve a second chance..
by and1515

Failure is not even an option for me I need to hold onto my family's legacy.
And yeah I'm sure there are plenty of people wondering why I'm even bothering to try anymore.
The truth is I'm to stubborn to stop even if it means hiring the last person on this green earth I want within ten feet of me;
to build back what and obvious deranged lunatic ruined in a matter a minutes.
Bastian was still trying to come to terms with the fact sooner rather then later his dear old dad would be gone.
He needed some way to prove himself and building her cabins was one sure fire way to prove he could rise above his dubious reputation.
Elodie was still trying to deal with the fallout of her latest broken romance after all she unknowingly let a fox in the hen house.
Or maybe the fact she was now willing to look beyond her less then stellar opinion of a guy who's gone out of his way to show a completely different side.
And somehow slowly but surely they'd formed a nice little friendship because honestly Bastian didn't do relationships at least until now.
Not once in his entire life had he'd ever been surprised like this; nor did he ever think he'd be allowed a sample from such a tempting woman like her.
Everything seemed fine as wine in the wonderful sunshine until the day the a reminder from his past came waltzing back.
Instead of really taking the time to consider all his opinions or even half way think he just reacted.
Now he needed to figure out the best way to fix what he so clearly broke.

Emotional/ Slow Burn/Enemies to lovers along with a bit of intrigue and mystery.
This was a new to me author who I am now thoroughly addicted to. If you love angst along with witty banter and even a deadly mystery involved you will love this one. You will need tissues but I promise you that there is an HEA. (I admit I was getting a bit worried about that. Alexa Gregory will keep you on the edge of your seat with this one)
Elodie and her family have lost some important pieces to their history, livelihood, and possible future to an arsonist. She must rebuild in order to secure a future for her family and their Sugar Bush and Farm. Unfortunately the only available builder is Bastian and he is the one man she does not want help from!
Bastian needs this job to not only rebuild the town's premier Sugar Bush but to also rebuild his reputation.
There is one problem, Elodie does not want Bastian to do the job.
When these two meet sparks fly but not just from them shooting glares at each other. They need each other but maybe not just for this rebuild of property but also to rebuild their hearts.

Loved this book

Loved this book so much. I'm a sucker for books about firemen, especially hot ones like Bastian. I also love no nonsense strong female characters, like Elodie. Mix the two together and you get an amazing book. The characters were genuine, well written and had real issues they dealt with. The emotional scars both characters have, hit home with me. Who hasn't felt they weren't good enough or deserved to be happy at some point of their lives? I enjoyed meeting all of the characters and I hope Alexa Gregory has books planned for all of them. I also loved her writing style. I literally could not stop reading this book. I am vested in the characters and I can not wait to read Salvage and see where Rowan and Violet's story goes.

The second book in the Eastwood Fire Department series a well written story with a very good storyline that flowed smoothly across the pages. Élodie Paradis and volunteer firefighter Bastian Roy's story of second chances. They both had very bad childhoods, making her unable to trust and him unable to know what love is, and trust in people. I like what he said to her at one point in the story "Our love is a firebreak from the rest of the world. It’s where I want to spend the rest of my life.” I enjoyed reading this story. Bastian Roy makes Firebreak well worth the read. His younger years consisted of a domineering father and a user for a mother. His adult self is still trying to make his father proud of him and overcome his reputation of being a quitter. Bastian is so much more, but no one is willing to give him a chance including Elodie. She is holding onto old slights and believes everything she has heard about Bastian, is unwilling to give him a chance and is always jumping to conclusions. While I never really became a fan of Elie, she does add to the story and Bastian's ability to overcome his perceived past. Bastian has his own moral code, strength and talent. He makes the book a 4 star.

All in all, a nice story. A long story, yes, which in my opinion could have been shorter with the same result. But the story kept me interested to finish the book.

I thought Bastian's character stood out the most. Growing from a womanizer to a man who takes up his responsibilities and thereby also shows his father what he is worth to the company. It went through trial and error, but that also makes a story beautiful.
In the story Elouise has a more even character but also more emotional.
Beautiful ending with a great epilogue

This book was good! I loved the romance between Élodie and Bastian and felt their love!🥵🥰 I loved the build up and the spice! And it ended beautifully! The only reason I didn't rate it higher was the conflict near the end where Bastian feared he may have gotten someone else pregnant and hid it from Élodie and broke up with her is just something I could never forgive him for. But I'm glad they worked things out and that they are all friends now I just wouldn't ever feel 100% after that. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series though!

Elodie wants to restore her beloved family business. She will do everything in her power to get it back up and running better than ever. Bastian wants nothing more than his father to trust him to take over his team and this project. To Bastian’s surprise Elodie is not his biggest fan. Can these two get past their issues? Can they really work together? What happens when you add sizzling chemistry into the mix? This was a cute story.

Heartfelt

This book is so good! It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. I could actually feel how Elodie and Bastien were feeling. Alexa Gregory has that way about her books. This is the second book in the series and, I feel, could be a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading Backdraft also. It is the first book of the series and, as Colson and Beatrice's story, will give you more insight about the fires. I highly recommend this book, it is amazing!

This is a really great book. Although it is a standalone story, I found myself getting confused or feeling like I missed something because I haven't read Backdraft. I was unaware this was the second book in the series. Anyway, what I felt confused about was later made more clear. This is Bastian and Elodie's story and it is so emotionally satisfying and exhausting and beautiful all in one! I have never read this author before and I fully intend to read more! This is a fantastic story!

Elodie is determined to restore her family business. Bastian is the contractor hired to help her rebuild but she has issues with him. Bastian is determined to show his dad that he can lead their family business even if it means winning over Elodie. Can they work together to get what needs to be done finished? What happens as they start to spend time together and their chemistry starts to burn hot?

A wonderful enemies to lovers story in the Caribou River series.

Eloise and Bastian have a very strong dislike for one another. However, the banter, angst and heat make this a wonderful read. These two have enough chemistry to light the river on fire…just takes them a bit to get there.

Highly recommend.
