So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.

Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there's always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled "Lord Margrave's Deception." I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.

Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce...lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.

Cora, mother of 4 year old Noah, is working her usual night shift at the local hospital when 3 three injured hockey players are bought in with varying degrees of injuries. Cora immediately recognises Shaw, her lifelong best friend who, 4 years ago, treated her so badly that it changed everything about their friendship.

Bought back together by fate, Shaw fights hard to win back Cora’s trust and friendship. Cora has to fight her own feelings of mistrust and hurt. Can she forgive him, can their friendship be what it was before?

This is a fantastic new standalone book by Apryl Baker which will have you breathlessly turning pages to find out what happens next. I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to see what Apryl brings out next.

Quick and easy read. Not really any smut, but good story! Secret pregnancy and second chance at love.

Didn’t love the end, I think it could have told more of how their family develops in an epilogue or something cause I have so many more questions.

Recap:
Cora (Tink) is a former hockey star but now a mother of a 4 year old little boy and a nurse in Minnesota. She has had lots of struggles in those 4 years, her bestie/love since they were 3 had sex with her then ghosted her after being scared and became and asshole when she tried to tell him about the baby. Then her parents threw her out while pregnant, then her ex-best friend/love mom, who was like her real mom after all the years, ignored her when she saw their son and didn’t tell a soul. Her grammie took her in but died from cancer quickly so she moved to start fresh. Cora never thought she would see her ex bestie again bc he always wanted the warm weather and she loved the cold winters like back home in Boston. When the head nurse announces there is a 3 VIP hockey injuries coming in she knows Cora can handle the chaos and out she in charge. When she sees the most injured and last patient she realizes it’s her ex bestie but composes herself quickly. Shaw is a pro hockey player new to the Minnesota Raptors after a horrible time in Florida l, but he has a bad cut on his leg, bad concussion and had surgery on his spleen. After years of being around hockey and her stepdad coach she is able to calm situations and the loud waiting room with ease. She even puts one of the meanest looking players in his place easily. When she is done she shift she feels she must go check on him incase and thankfully she is able to stop a punk male nurse trying to exploit him with pictures while he’s unconscious. She breaks his phone and he punches her in the face. We later learn he was trying to settle a gambling debt with the Russian mob. Shaw wakes up and can’t believe he is seeing Cora after these 4 years and his biggest mistake of hurting her. He will do anything to get her back. The team coach is impressed with her abilities and gets her and one other nurse to alternate night and day shift only for their players…that means caring for Shaw when she doesn’t want anything to do with him…or he might find out about their son Noah. During this time his parents visit and it’s clear there is tension with his mom and his dad is clueless, Shaw is just trying to get Cora to talk to him so he can apologize but every time he’s cut off or ignored, she doesn’t want to hear it. She meets another player at a run down rink that he’s interested in buying and their kids hit it off and Blaine ends up putting two and two together of who Noah’s dad is. Once he’s released from the hospital she has a few days off and takes her son ice skating again but Blaine sets her up and right when Shaw sees him he knows it’s his kid. She is pissed but now has to navigate this bs, he instantly falls for his son. All the years trying to fill the hole losing Cora left and he feels it start to stitch, and maybe get her back too. He promises he just wants to know his son but she is scared and thankfully she is starting to talk to her real dad again and asks for help. They form a custody plan and the truth about his mom knowing comes out, Cora doesn’t allow her to know Noah, she is still furious but doesn’t stop his dad, well with stipulations. They are starting to earn trust and get comfortable together, he even convinced her that a house is safer and his missed 4 years of child support earned it. Then pictures of Noah and her being watched show up anonymously at her door. She freaks and they hide at Blaine’s house in a gated community and bumps up the moving date for the new house. When she is packing someone breaks into her old apt, it’s the crazy nurse she stopped from taking pictures of Shaw, he owes a debt to the Russian mob and those pics were is cash out, now he will sell her, and her son who he shows her on his phone are being held at gun point at her dads. Thankfully they don’t pay attention and Cora is able to text Shaw 911 save Noah, the Raptors organization rally’s and gets the cops there to save them. Then they get a special ops team to locate Cora and kill the bad guys and save her. Shaw thought he lost her again and forever and nothing is more clear this is his family and he loves them forever and will do anything to keep them safe. HEA

Loved this book

I'm not into hockey or cold weather either, but I thoroughly enjoyed this
My book. I look forward to reading the next one. This is also a new author for me as well. I ARC and Beta read quite a lot as I read at least a book a day and I rarely give five stars to anyone's book, but this one deserved it!

Well Written

Okay, let me tell it to you straight. There are some things that I really hate in stories. Guys being “in love” with a girl, yet going after everyone else but her. Calling a girl the “w” word, even if she’s been with 20 guys or just one. Even more so when the “hero” takes the girl’s virginity. (So not cool because the guy could have double or triple the number and don’t consider themselves a “w”.) And the fact the the “hero” of a story has sex with anything with a pulse, yet the heroine has only had sex with him, or no one at all ever, even if years pass by. Seriously why can’t the girl have had relationships too? Then the whole cheating by anyone, hero or heroine, is always a pet peeve for me.

Now I’m not saying that this particular story has all of that in it, but it does have some of that. Then there’s the fact that he skipped out on the heroine and ghosted her after being best friends for 15 years. Who does that? A cruddy person. Those points are what made it tough for me to read. Made me so against the two of them being together at all. Which sucks for my own enjoyment because it is a well written story. And I have to get over myself because everyone’s life is different and they make their own choices to forgive, move on, etc. Even if they are fictional characters.

If you’re not turned off by the same things that I was you’ll enjoy this story and might even rate it at 4 stars or above. I’m hoping that the author continues to write and maybe I won’t be such a grumpy butt in the future.

Live a good second chance book

While I really loved this book, I hate that we didn't get an epilogue. I needed more!!! I love a good hockey book and while this one didn't have a while lot of hockey, it was enough! Shaw and Cora were best friends until they weren't...but I'm not going to spoil it. Loved them getting a second chance at love bc they were meant for each other

Cute Read

Very sweet and lite on the spice which I appreciate in my current mood. Took a good half day to read which I also appreciate. I really hope that Baas and Blane get stories so I’ll definitely be looking into that. While I appreciate the pace and story progression, I do feel that some bits were rushed. One minute she’s still adamantly refusing to let Shaw in and then we have a 3 week jump and she’s moving in with the dude. It wasn’t super weird because you can imagine he was repairing their relationship in that time, but it would have been nice to see some of that. Also, I think this would have benefited from one last chapter or an epilogue to wrap it up a bit better. I feel it ended rather abruptly. Also, for a hockey romance there was pretty much zero hockey so just FYI. Still I would recommend the book.

Shaw by Apryl Baker is a deeply moving and emotionally rich novel that pulls you in from the very first page. Cora Stevens’ journey is raw, relatable, and heartfelt, capturing the pain of betrayal and the overwhelming feeling of losing everything you thought your life would be. Baker does a wonderful job portraying vulnerability without making Cora feel weak. Her decision to leave Boston and escape the weight of her past feels authentic, and readers can’t help but root for her as she tries to rebuild herself piece by piece. The emotional depth of the story is balanced beautifully with moments of hope, growth, and resilience. The characters feel real and layered, and the writing allows you to fully connect with Cora’s struggles and triumphs. This is the kind of book that makes you feel, sadness, anger, hope, and ultimately, strength.

Fated

She's on duty when her past comes into the ER. She has to be a professional and she has to protect her heart and her family.

He's been missing her for so long, she left and he couldn't track her down, but now she's here and now she's shown that a piece he never knew about is here too.

But danger is lurking and forgiveness is pressing...

I liked this story, but I wanted to see more development between Shaw and Cora, I wanted to see her forgive Blaine and her future mother in law.... I also found a lot of grammer errors which isn't normal for this author. I also felt the ending was abrupt. Hoping the rest of the series gives me more. Otherwise I did enjoy reading this story.

Well written sports/ reuniting friends romance . Cora a nurse is a feisty and strong character who doesnt let anything or anyone get her down and she will do anything to protect her son . She accidently runs into Shaw the male main character whilst attending to his injuries sustained while playing hockey. Cora and Shaw grew up togther and have history until Shaw stuffed it up big time .He had a lot to make up for and does just that . The story has a big secret , A bit of suspence , some good humour and great side charachters. I hope we see more stories about the other characters and get to see a bit more of Cora and Shaw .

For the most part, this was an enjoyable read. The author has done extremely well to convey alot of emotions and create a genuine connection between the audience and characters.

Having said that, there were a couple of things I didn't like personally. More often than not, while I liked the FMC being strong, she was also quite predictable. I felt there was something missing from their emotional connection to each other as well. But the award for my biggest grievance goes to the ending. I found it to be so abrupt and out of place it didn't sit well with me for the overall feeling of the book.

Maybe 3.5. I enjoyed the story but the end was way too short. An epilogue of some time down the road would have been way better… maybe 2 epilogues. My one huge bone to pick with was Shaw’s mom and, in part, Shaw himself. He was obviously a man whore who never really understood what he did wrong or how it impacted Cora’s life in such a devastating way. And Shaw’s mum. What a bitch… it would be a cold day in hell until I forgave her and the fact that Shaw (and his dad) couldn’t see that… shows just how little they understood how this entire family impacted Cora and Noah. Hard no… far more grovelling was needed by Shaw’s entire family.

Great start to a new series!

Terrific book, the suspenseful element made it so much more so!
I really loved the book, Cora was a terrific main character, strong, take no shi*, wonderful mother and individual!
Shaw, well what is more perfect than a best friend as your significant other, but not without flaws. He overcame before realizing there was more to this woman than he knew! Liz, loved this secondary character, as much as Shaw's father!
I sincerely hope Blaine's story is next ... PLEASE!
Cannot wait for the next installment!

Outstanding

This was outstanding! I enjoyed every minute. I couldn’t put this story down for a minute. It captured me with a wonderful story of young heartbreak maybe getting put back together, then a kidnapping, and long lost family reunited. It is a wonderfully written story. I got this in kindle unlimited but I am buying it. I know this one is going to be a favorite re-read. HEA, no cliffhanger, no cheating (there may have been cheating back during college days but I wasn’t sure if they were broken up then or not). Great read!

Second Chance

I was not expecting to like this as much as I did but it was really good. I liked the characters, they weren’t perfect and made mistakes (some truly major ones) but in the end dealt with them and moved on living life. This made them seem real. Even characters who were only briefly “on stage” had personalities. The relationship between Shaw and Cora was broken at the beginning but throughout the book it was rebuilt brick by brick. It ended too soon and I wanted more.

not a bad read

I purchased this based upon a blurb I saw on social media. I love hockey stories and while there was some hockey to it, the story did not focus on it. Story was well written and plot was solid. I had the bad guy pegged ear;y on but I don’t think the writer meant for it to be all that hard to figure out. Cora and Shaw are likeable characters and I found myself rooting for them. Not a lot of smut so if that’s your thing, you’ll be disappointed. Great , quick, entertaining read. I’love read more in the series if they’re released.

Good read

I’m not normally into sports romances but I got sucked in via a Facebook snippet and here we are lol. This was a solid story and the second chance at love wasn’t all moonlight and roses which I thought was great. Well rounded characters and a decent plot which I will re read in the future. Only small downside for me was I would have loved an epilogue but other than that I’ll definitely read more from this author

Great Read

Normally I prefer smuttier books but when I started reading this book on one of the pay per chapter sites I was engrossed so much I decided to see if it was offered where I could buy it outright and read without pausing. Great book for teens and adults. Only occasional cuss words. But they don’t bother me. I hear plenty more from the kindergartners on my school bus sadly. Definitely worth the read, I didn’t put it down.

Loved Him Once, Love Him Again

An easy hockey story of 2 best friends, who grow apart, one holds resentment and one holds out hope for a future both not knowing they’d see each other again much sooner than they would ever know. If you love a tough FMC and a MMC who has to gain back the trust of his first love, stand his ground for her and against the wrongs that were done to her, and a broken family reunited than this is for you.

New author to me, took me a while to get through this book. It wasn’t bad. What is crazy is I just had this conversation with a friend about how some authors just are incapable of writing and ending. And I’m sorry I’m just gonna say, I think this author needs to go back and recheck her work. What an abrupt ending that just ruined it all for me. Seriously it was that bad IMO.🫠
Just one of those books that left me saying WTF 😅

So much emotion!

I loved this book. I couldn't stop reading it. There was so much emotion ranging from betrayal to love to fear and relief. I laughed and cried reading this book. I felt like I was right there with Cora and Shaw for everything! I can't wait to see what this author writes next! Highly recommend.

started so good!

This book started so good and had all the tropes I love (2nd chance, he wronged her, tons of angst), but just kinda fizzled. Not a good grovel, not a lot of true “he loves her” type feelings. I think the writer may need to get a few more books under her to get it to the level I’m looking for, but I’d read another.

Didn't connect with the characters well and the ending seemed quite abrupt, with no epilogue to properly conclude Cora and Shaw's love story. The dilemma didn't tie in well with all the other issues their relationship faced.

Good

Enjoyable. Very engaging. I liked Cora a lot, even if she was predictable in places. Shaw was great but also rather predictable in a lot of content. Good fast paced story, that packed a lot into the story. Look forward to more

Good quick read

Enjoyable hockey story. Cora did at times annoy me. I understand to a point why she did what she did, but sometimes her anger seemed to be over done. The storyline was good and well written, only a couple grammatical errors.

Good

I enjoyed reading how Shaw and Cora’s relationship came back to good and can I say thank goodness for Blaine or they never would have figured things out. It ended at a weird spot for me

Shaw, not what I expected

I liked this story. I do think the forgiveness was too easy and I want to know what happened with Shaw's mom. I wasn't expecting the twist and that sort of felt easily resolved too but still good.

crap ending

The book was great all the way through, read the whole thing in one day, but the ending was horrible. It just left you wondering what was gonna happen next with no sequel. I didn’t even realize I was at the end then it was over.
