The first book of a new series is always a get to know the characters and the situations. A really good author can make it a very interesting experience. This is already turning out to be a very thrilling and heavy impact story. The characters are aggressive and the action is in your face!! The storyline is already over the top and so explosive that if it were true it would be terrifying!!! I can’t wait to see where this author takes the story!! I was given an arc copy to read for an honest opinion.
Alex Payne a 20 veteran of the FBI with an incredible crime solving record who will not work with a partner after an incident that seems to have formed his present attitude. When his boss, Crowe, calls him in and assigns him an extremely dangerous case and an rookie partner, Evans, he is really angry - not so much as being given this case which takes precedence above all other, but the fact that he's given a partner. Crowe tells him to keep his head low in investigating this case as the man who was found dead on the pier with an odd never before seen tattoo was an FBI infiltrator. It seems Evans is working out ok because he is actually taking orders from Payne whether he liked the orders or not. Now any of Payne's informers are getting killed as well as the drug dealer he brought in before he got this case. Payne asked a retired agent, who is a good friend, about the tattoo things get very bad when members of this criminal enterprise tries to take out his friend to silence him. Wow! His FBI friend and family get protection but not before he whispers an important name to Payne. When Payne Follows up, he gets information that shakes him and makes him more determined to bring this group down. But it seems every time he thinks he can get information, someone is either killer or they kill themselves. Payne gets in trouble. Cliff Hanger.....what will happen to Payne now that he is in a position that seems impossible to get out of. I highly recommend this first book in the series, it will make you crave more! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
This is the 1st book and I know it will be a definite winner. The story introduces Payne who has been with the FBI for over twenty years. Payne has just made a major drug bust and is anxious to pursue following up on the murder of another individual at a different criminal lord. While attempting to interrogate a suspect his new partner Evans interrupts him with information related to another body that was found and the Payne was handling.
Unknown at the time, all of these incidents were somewhat related except for the 1st drug bust. Payne was assigned by his boss Crowe to concentrate on getting answers to the group responsible for the killing of the body found on the pier. All of his other cases would be given to other agents so that his focus was on the one case. As Payne began gathering information, this organization sent him a warning to drop the investigation.
To discover how all of the cases interacted, what was so important regarding the body found on the pier, what dangers were aimed at Payne and his associates and what the groups aims are, then you must read this book. The last part will have looking forward to the next book in the series.
FBI Agent Alex Payne prefers to work alone, but he has to have a partner - by order of his boss, Director Crow - and it's young newbie Agent Evans, who soon realises why nobody else wants to team up with the permanently grouchy Alex. Their first mission together is a resounding success, but Evans and Alex can't relax, as they're soon onto the next - a body dumped at sea, with a shocking autopsy report...he's one of their own! Then another corpse with an unusual tattoo, leads to Payne and Evans getting a warning to stay clear of the killer and his gang. Will Payne heed the warning? Whom does he save? Who is Felix Warrington? What's Armageddon?

What a fabulous start to an exciting new series! In this first installment we are introduced to Alex Payne, a 20+ year veteran with the FBI. His preference is to work alone, however he has now been partnered up with a newbie, Agent Evans. They inevitably start out on a bumpy path, but Alex begins to realize that Evans can be quite useful. The action and thrill do not stop as they begin to encounter more cases together. The storyline is well-written and really kept my interest the whole way through. I am excited to see how this story will play out. A really exciting start to a new series!
I received a complimentary advanced reader's copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review.
New Series/New Character In this new series, Audrey introduces a new character to us, Alex Payne, a prefers to work alone FBI agent. However his boss assigns him a new, young agent to be his partner, which Payne is definitely not excited about. They get off to the expected rough start, but Evans proves to be useful over time. The story line is well written, and there is a lot of information to follow to keep up with the story, especially regarding the organization he is investigating. A good start to the new series, and I am excited to see where this story leads. I am a member of Audrey's ARC Team.
I received this book for an honest review This book one of a series. The story starts off with a police office named Alex capturing someone from a drug ring called Tribiani. It took him awhile but he finally caught him. He captured his son first and afterwards the dad.
Alex gets a new Police partner called Evans. Evan’s is a newcomer to the FBI ( where they work). Alex now discovered that there was a mole in the FBI.
Another case they are investigating is the one where they found a drowned body, believed to be dead for eight days as per the autopsy.
This author always writes very interesting mysteries and they are short reads too. I always enjoy them.
Payne: a suspenseful FBI crime thriller Novella (Alex Payne Series Book 1), my thirty-third read from author Audrey Walker. A 91-page page-turning read that I finished easily in just over an hour. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book back in November of 2021 and am just now getting around to reading it and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Under Payne: a suspenseful FBI crime thriller Novella (Alex Payne Series Book 2) next on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
First of a ten-book set. Before I invest time in reading 1,000 pages over the next few months, I need to make sure I'm interested. This seems to have more character development of the main character than other books of this genre that I've read. Payne isn't particularly likable and that's ok. A larger mystery is introduced toward the end of the first book (no surprise there). I started another series by the same author and didn't get very far with it, so I'm skeptical after Book One and the prequal. We'll reserve judgement.
I received a complimentary copy of this first in a new crime thriller series in return for an objective review. Payne is full of suspense, threats, twists and turns; involving organised crime, barbaric torture, smuggling and a mole, as well as references to The Illuminati. It’s all here! I was certainly kept engaged and intrigued, right to the cliff hanger end, and am looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Alex Payne is an obnoxious detective, who is only tolerated by his colleagues and boss because he is good at his job. He is looking into an underground organisation that horrifically tortured an undercover cop. Links to gangs and Russian mobs will, no doubt, prove deadly. Alex has quite a back story that has been hinted at but not fully revealed, just yet.
I received an ARC and I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Payne: a suspenseful FBI crime thriller (Alex Payne Series Book 1) by Audrey Walker is a wonderful story to read. This is book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series that I am so hooked on and can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about thrillers.
I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
This book is the start of a series and is good. It’s got lots of suspense and some twists. Agent Payne does whatever he feels is necessary to get the job done and not all of it is within the rules. He prefers to work alone but is forced to have a newbie partner. Given a very deadly and complicated case Agent Payne is forced to rack his brain and others to get answers. Problem is so many of them end up dead…what next?
I received this as an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Well this author has just been put in my line of sight! What a really good thriller from the very start and till the end. The writer spins such a silkly web that is so so fine ,that you are caught before you know. The pace of the story moves so very effortlessly. The characters come off as people you would know .This was and is just really good writing. So looking forward to the next installment and to be put in a state of suspense.
Payne is a pain for his partners but Payne gets results. When a body is found on the beach, Payne is intrigued the strange tattoo on the victim's body. What does it signify and why are the informants terrified and refuse to speak about it? Another gripping and suspenseful mystery which had me glued.
This is a brilliant new series to read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read the next one!!!!
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Once again Audrey Walker swaps genre with the apparent ease of changing a pair of gloves. Enter Alex Payne, a troubled FBI agent, who finds himself tasked with uncovering the identity of a dangerous underworld organization. The writing is gritty. There's violence intended and graphic. And, of course, Audrey's trademark cliffhanger ending.
Not a great lover of serial books , this is part one novella to 'Payne disclosure' and as such is a good opening to what is an excellent book, full of thrills and action strong characters and good progressing story. Would also suggest reading 'He is Payne ' first as this is the prequel and pays the foundation of the books
This is the beginning of another Audrey Walker roller coaster ride. Book 1 is the slow climb that leaves you anticipating the rush you know is coming. Sit back and enjoy the ride
This was a great story! It starts off strongly and ends with a closure you don't want to believe!! It is also hard put it down even if you must go take care of business!!!
Okay first in a new series by the Shelby author and it’s a good start. It’s a bit slow while things slot into place as they have to but I’m sure it will improve as the series goes on. Highly recommended.
