He studied physiology at University College, London, and went on to study history of science and vertebrate palaeontology at University College London before researching the history of vertebrate palaeontology at Harvard University, under Stephen Jay Gould. He was awarded a PhD in the area of the Victorian-period context of Darwinian evolution.
Desmond is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Biology Department at University College London.

Few Englishmen have had a more profound – and controversial – impact on history than Charles Darwin. Born in 1809 to a prosperous family of doctors and manufacturers, he received training first as a doctor and then a clergymen before embracing a career as a naturalist. His five-year voyage on the “Beagle” became the defining experience of his life, inspiring him to reevaluate natural history and giving him a wealth of material to study. Establishing a career as a gentleman scientist, he gradually came to embrace the concept of “natural selection”, yet shied from publishing his conclusions until prodded by a similar paper by Alfred Russell Wallace. Publication of “The Origin of Species” in 1859 triggered an onslaught on controversy, one that did not deter Darwin from continuing his biological studies until his death in 1882.
Darwin’s life has received enormous attention – so much so, as Adrian Desmond, James Moore, and Janet Browne note in the preface to this book, that today “historians know more about his career than his family did, and in respects . . . they even know more about the man.” Such a massive amount of information can prove difficult to summarize, but the three authors rove more than capable of the task. Taken from their entry on Darwin for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, each draw upon their particular specialty - Desmond on the politics of evolution, evolution and Darwin’s colleagues, Moore on the secular and religious contexts, and Browne on the history of botany – to present a comprehensive portrait of Darwin, one that captures the amazing range of his natural studies. Supplemented with a final chapter on his legacy, the book serves as a good introduction to the famous naturalist, as well as a guide to the mountain of further literature on his life and legacy.

He leído el pequeño libro titulado Charles Darwin y firmado por tres de los más grandes expertos mundiales en Darwin: Adrian Desmond, James Moore y Janet Browne. Los tres tienes sobradas credenciales para presentarnos este breve resumen de la obra y la vida de Darwin, entre otros muchos méritos, los dos primeros por una lado y la tercera autora, por el suyo, han publicado ya extensas y sesudas biografías de Darwin que han recibido el reconocimiento general de la academia y de la crítica.
Los autores tiene el mérito de tras haber dedicado en total más de 100 años, como ellos mismo informan, a la investigación de la vida y la obra Darwin y tras haber escrito miles de páginas al respecto, han sido capaces de ponerse de acuerdo y sintentizar sus conocimientos en 140 páginas de firma común. Hicieron incialmente el ejercicio de sumar sus saberes, sus plumas y sus firmas para una entrada en el Oxford Dictionary of National Biography que, según parece, es el origen de este libro.
Tiene un airea al delicioso libro de Tim A. Berra, también breve, condensado y sabio como es éste que ahora comentamos. El libro de Berra desbordaba alegría, entusiasmo por compartirnos lo que sabía, sentía y pensaba sobre Darwin, era muy personal. El que firman a trío Desmond, Moore y Browne quizá inevitablemente, por ser obra colectiva, es menos personal, más frío, quizá más correcto.
Desde luego es una magnífica biografía y cruza con enorme seguridad la vida de Darwin con el momento histórico que le tocó vivir y lo que ese entorno significó y supuso. Quizá el capítulo más rico y original y que sólo unos verdaderos expertos como estos podrían haber escrito, sea el último “El legado de Darwin”, en que en 20 páginas son capaces de resumirnos críticamente la forma en que Darwin ha sido leido, interpretado, investigado y no pocas a veces utilizado en los úlltimos 150 años por científicos, historiadores, políticos, investigadores, escritores, corrientes culturales, sociales y políticas. En cada momento se ha buscado o subrayado un aspecto, un ámbito o un perfil de Darwin y las polémicas o controversias científicas y políticas no han sido pocas. En 20 páginas los autores recorren las principales escuales y autores y publicaciones que nos presentan estos debates. Es, como digo, el capítulo más original y, a mi juicio, valioso que consigue culminar una muy buena biografía y convertirla en única.

Olin raamatut alustades veidi skeptiline, kuna tegemist on nii tähtsa inimese biograafia kohta ikka väga õhukese raamatuga, ent õnneks selgus lugemise käigus, et teos on põhjalik ja annab väga hea ülevaate Darwini elust, uurimistööst ja tema teooriate mõjust ühiskonnale. Puudu polnud ka inimlikum lähenemine – perekondlik elu, lapsed, aastakümneid Darwinit saatnud müstiline haigus. Põhjalikult oli kirjeldatud tema teooriate vastuvõttu nii 19. sajandi inglise ühiskonnas kui ka hiljem üle maailma, erinevate kultuuri- ja poliitiliste taustadega paikades.
Huvitav oli lugeda, et algselt läks noor Darwin hoopis arstiks õppima, ent operatsioonide sooritamine ei olnud siiski tema jaoks, nii et õpingud esimeses ülikoolis jäid pooleli. Seejärel alustas Darwin uues ülikoolis õpinguid, et vaimulikuks saada, ning siis alles liikus ta sujuvalt üle loodusteaduste juurde.

I first read this at University when I was studying sociology and I was concerned as i had little knowledge about science. However, this Biography is very easily understood, comprehensive and clear. Additionally,this biography stands above all others in my opinion due to the style in which it was written.This style, known as 'creative non fiction' allows you to view Darwin as a person with thoughts and feelings which may have influenced his work. For example, his reaction to the death of his daughter. I found this utterly compelling and would highly recommend it to any student who needs to understand Darwin, nothing beats it!

This book was a biography of a great naturalist and humanitarian. I read it for information on a speech I had to deliver on Darwin's voyage to South America. I was impressed by his ability to think without the aid of preconceived notions and inspired by the interest he had in natural history.

This was an interesting look at Darwin's life. A good read. It also raised some interesting questions as to whether or not he recanted his theories at the end of his life.
