Will Harper Mystery #7

Florida Sinking

Rate this book
Water, water, everywhere—
Deadlier than you'd think!

In Will Harper’s latest hardboiled, action-packed adventure, Floridian families are shocked--and occasionally killed--when their brand-new houses start falling into the earth. The culprit? Lethal sinkholes worsened by climate change. But government officials and one particularly greedy developer keep turning a blind eye.

And as the homeowners suddenly realize their sinkhole-ridden land is worthless, they’re sometimes driven to homicidal behavior...

Will, a semi-retired investigative reporter turned amateur sleuth, is too big-hearted not to get involved. While researching a hard-hitting expose on climate change and the quality of water in Florida, he discovers the deceitful real estate developer is constructing an entire development on top of a massive sinkhole. Whole neighborhoods could slide into the muck!

The developer will stop at nothing to conceal his intricate fraud, but luckily, Will comes equipped with his ever-sharp prose, his commitment to Florida social issues, his beloved trawler, The Wanderlust, and a little help from his friends.

Still, the shoddy real estate cartel’s a behemoth— fortunately for the reader, it won’t be easy!

I enjoy books set in Florida and in the water. This book is an easy fast read that covers some very serious environmental issues in central Florida. This particular story is about sinkholes in central Florida due to the overuse of water, overdevelopment and corruption. Very serious issues but a bit preachy although I live in central part of the state and understand the seriousness. The book covers a lot in short amount time and the good guys come out on top. The writing is pretty simple and dialogue is a bit stilted. But, it was an easy read although I probably won’t delve into series any further.

Florida Sinking is a compelling read. Investigative reporter Will Harper and his friends are in for a wild ride as they contend with sinkholes, the misuse of critical natural resources by greedy developers, and an ocean rescue in the middle of a hurricane. The only way the good folks of SailFin Pointe Marina can get through it all is if they come together to help each other.

To write intelligently about Florida, an author must have a keen understanding of the state's unique ecology, as well as a fundamental feel for what Florida means to Floridians. David Crosby writes Florida very well.

I really got into the six volume set of the Will Harper stories. They gripped my interest immediately, and realising that each story is based on a real issue in Florida and the central character is a journalist with a determination to bring the big problems facing Florida to the readers of the newspaper whose owner gives him carte Blanche to investigate however he needs to made them even more interesting. The scandalous corruption that probably takes place everywhere, not just Florida, but also the issues caused by over population and greed are really shocking, but do make compulsive reading. I really liked the characters of Will Harper in particular - I see him as someone very desirable! Plus his friends, Captain Rick and Jimmy. Will's troubles in love seem to be solved - at least for the foreseeable future, with the lovely Donna, who, unlike his previous love interests, is confident enough in herself to encourage Will in his investigations and writing while having her own fulfilling job as a nurse. I look forward to the next and more from David Crosby in this series

Very Good Author...

Very Good Author.... easy to mix him up in google search with “David Crosby” The singer in “ Crosby, Stills & Nash”. Mr David Crosby (the author) even uses crosbystills.com in his email address. Makes you wonder if he is the one and the same? AnyWho I’ve read all 7 books in the Will Harper series... and enjoyed them ALL greatly. Even though Mr Crosby And I have very different political views regarding illegal aliens entering. The USA from their shi*t hole countries. I firmly believe America has enough to do by just helping our own disadvantaged citizens both Black and white that want to pull them selves up by their boot straps and work. Mr Crosby seems to lean toward the Liberal viewpoint in several of his books. He is a good writer...5 stars for that. Zero for his socialist liberal preaching in his books. Thankfully at least he’s not teaching his “woke” opinions in our school system.

Will finds sinkholes!

Three stories in one book as David Crosby exposes and enlightens about the effect environment is having on the Florida Eco system.

The main story is about sinkholes and how they occur. As water is drawn for the new buildings and expansion for the new residents each year it is diminished. Water table drops and these water sources support the limestone caves and keep them from falling, as a sinkhole. The subject is important but Crosby weaves fictional characters and events for an interesting and fun read.

The other two stories surround an individual boat Captain and the other about a person determined to coerce approvals from building inspector. In the end he ties all three together. Recommended Five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Star

This is an interesting book, partly because it is about what appears to be a real problem that is going on in Florida. The main character Will Harper is a journalist who is writing about water issues (with emphasis on sink holes and disappearing water) in Florida. Will lives on a boat with his girlfriend Bonnie and has a cast of friends who help with his story. There are, of course, a number of dangerous happenings and some interesting scenarios.
The main thing I didn't like is the times the story felt like a political piece about climate change and against the Florida state government. I didn't care for the political grandstanding. Otherwise, it was a good story.

David Crosby was one of my early finds exploring Kindle during the lockdown. I smoked through his first four books in as many days and then happily anticipated each new release since then. This book didn't disappoint. It was one of those late nights where I decided that I would take a peek at the first chapter and the next thing I knew I was five chapters in. I enjoy the characters in this series and the settings. Sinkholes and water issues are a good subject to explore and made for great reading. I'm looking forward to the next book already.

Hurricane, sinkhole, leaks

Crosby's Will Harper series features an investigative news reporter. Set very near, the proximity drew me in. As Will researches and writes a series on how water plays its critical role in Florida life, he and his team travel the peninsula giving the author a venue to see the Sunshine State. With a bit of Bonnie's skin on display, a sixteen year old being watched, and two trips into sinkholes while a hurricane heads to Miami, there's plenty of well written drama.

Wonderful!

I love the Will Harper series. As a native Floridan, his stories touch on issues that are dear to my heart. Things like politics that allow unchecked pollution, over building, and over paving that lead to water issues. Will also eats out a lot and the food descriptions are awesome. LOL! Several times the character is relaxing by reading on his Kindle, and it's mentioned that he's reading another author that I like, Wayne Stinnet. I can't recommend this series enough!

Florida, a tourist destination, is in need of conservative measures.

A very interesting story with lots of suspense, twists and turns as a journalist writes to bring awareness to the public concerning the problems with the water shortage, sinkholes and other issues like overpopulation. I enjoyed this story and I believe, even though it's fiction people can be made aware that now is the time to protect the natural environment and resources. Looking forward to the next book.

Will Harper really does live a charmed life as an investigative journalist on board his boat. The ideal setting helps a lot along with the company of Bonnie I suppose. It's not all plain sailing though as he is put at risk by his uncovering of dirty deeds leading to deaths and losses of homes but he uncovers the culprits and they are brought to justice as is fitting for a good story along with building his team of assistants to help him with future cases. Keep up the good work Mr. Crosby.

Bribery, Corruption, Murder with a touch of Romance

A rollicking good yarn with real-life issues as the foundation to the story. Greed and corruption lie behind many of the issues facing Florida today. Beyond that the characters are believable, the tension builds, and I appreciated the lack of coarse language and overt sexual descriptions! A good mystery with a number of levels to it was what I hoped for, and exactly what was delivered. Thanks David Crosby, you have a new fan.

Another Amazingly Educational Book

I enjoy the Will Harper Mystery Series because I become aware of issues that are true but I was not aware of. This book was enlightening on the water situation in Florida and probably elsewhere. Other issues include coastal flooding and the growing problem of sink holes. I highly recommend David Crosby’s books that are well written and educational.

terrible

If I wanted to read a book on the threat of “climate change” I would pick a non-fiction work.
If I wanted to explore a theory that is just that, I would appreciate a heads-up before buying a book and reading it.
If you espouse the theory of climate change, formerly known as “global warming,” or “man made global warming,” this one is for you.
If you are looking for a work of fiction for pure entertainment, don’t waster your time here!

sounds true!

I really got into this book. 1st Tampa, Fl is my home state & 2nd- the book seems more truth than fiction!
Water & weather issues, people moving there in droves with more money than sense! And a unethical governing body, allowing the building of wet lands & all without a thought of the environmental impact! Boy I hope there’s a journalist like Will Harper making waves & bringing truth!!

A great fictional investigative telling the truth

Recommend this book to all Florida residents and vacationers. There is a lot of truth in these fictional story lines. The Will Harper series continues to thrill while educating the reader. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Florida water issues

Will is writing a series of stories for the newspaper about salt water intrusion into drinking water wells, too much water, too little water, sink holes, and other problems. Along the way, bad guys need to be stopped and good guys need help. Another great read.

Great Book!

What a interesting book this was.Mr Crosby is a wonderful writer and kept me interested from start to finish, not a boring part anywhere. This is the first of his books for me, but not my last..I lived in Panama City for a few years, but never really felt at home there..Still,I find myself missing it at times…

Good story, good writing.

A blend of Carl Hiassen and John D MacDonald, Crosby has crafted a stay-up-all-night tale. Bad guys, good guys, corruption, pollution, greed, are all here, the breadth of human behavior, all based on actual events, fictionalized into a plot to grab your heart and mind. I liked it.

This is the first book I read of David Crosby. It was a great read. I loved the setting and the characters. It was a great mystery with Will Harper investigating the ecosystem and water of Florida. Got me thinking how we need to preserve and take care of it. I will read more of the Will Harper mystery series.

Hook line and sink ihole

This one has a great story plot with lots of charming characters entwined with some tragic reality checks about the dangers of real life overgrowth. I only hope there is a real life Will Harper out there spreading more truths to help save Florida and our borders.

Interesting and Informative

While I was aware of some of the water related issues in this book, I appreciated the factual information that explained the issue. I also enjoyed the characters and the parts they played to make this such a fun book to read. David Crosby did a great job with this story!

Not another booting environmental story

Initially not what I was expecting. I'm not one who reads a lot on environmental stories so it was nice to read one that grabbed and kept my attention. A few twists and turns but not enough to confuse the story so all round an excellent read.

Fiction, but factual

Years before I moved to Florida, I was reading about sinkhole issues there ( here). The author describes what happens, including the brazen disregard of the environment by politicians, but without sounding preachy or political. This is the 6th book I've read by this author, each one leaves me wanting more.

This author writes great fiction with reality woven in. It is well written and makes you think about where you live and the problems in your area. Now I do not live in Florida but I can relate. I enjoy the topics the author brings to these stories and how he handles them. The characters are very relatable. This is a solid good series.

David Crosby writes what I want to read. Characters look for a reason to drink and eat. Not a drinker. I love reading books based near water. Will seems to be a pushover where women and his yacht are concerned. Stories are excellent and it's amazing how Crosby fits them all in. I read one a day and I work a full time job. I look forward to what ever Mr. Crosby writes.

Another good book by David Crosby and his Will Harper series. There are still the interesting characters, the charm of Will Harper himself, and plenty of action to keep the story moving nicely. My only complaint as to do with the one-sided debate going on in the early stages. Still, the story holds together nicely in spite of this proselytizing, and the book is highly entertaining.

exciting and fast paced mystery

Thank you for writing Will Harper mysteries and entertaining me! I continue to be drawn in by your deeply rich and sometimes flawed characters. Your books take me to interesting places while sticking my feet in the imaginary sand and water, as if I were there, solving these cases myself.

Very good until

I was impressed by the quality of writing, a believable storyline about contemporary issues, and good character development. And then it went downhill. The story relied on too many hard-to-believe coincidences and unrealistic scenarios, and then the narrative just ran out of steam. It was so good until…

Hurricanes, building contractors, sinkholes, old boat captains, lizards, rising sea levels, and teen girls wanting to be adults too fast. If it isn't one thing, it's another making life difficult for Will Harper, freelance journalist, who lives on a boat in Florida, has a woman who loves to bare all on the boat, and is writing a series of articles about Florida's water problems.
