Series: The 1797 Club #6 Publication Date: 3/27/18
Another winning read in Jess Michael’s 1797 Club series. This one is slightly different simply because we have never met this particular member of the club before and the members of the club don’t show up at all until we’re about half-way through the book. That was kind of nice because we got the opportunity to know the main characters before we started interacting with the other members of the club. That said, I think I would have enjoyed a bit more active participation from the club rather than them playing a pretty passive role.
Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, had a very unhappy life. Both of his parents hated him and he had no idea why until he was about sixteen. Then, everything blew apart. Luckily for him, he had made friends with a number of other future dukes when he started school. Almost all of them have horrible parents and they banded together to help each other through life. When Lucas was eighteen, his father died and Lucas became the duke. Lucas wanted no part of the duchy and he started to work for the Crown as a spy. He had determined that it was his destiny to die in the field and he cut all ties with his friends in order to protect them – from enemies who wanted to harm him and from any grief they might suffer on his demise.
Diana Oakford lost her mother when she was very young and had only her father left in her life. He was a gifted physician who was tasked with taking care of her country’s spies. When her father dies on a mission, she is heartbroken beyond belief. She is a gorgeous woman with dark hair and full lips and the most spectacular jade colored eyes and she is also a healer like her father
Lucas was on a very, very secret mission trying to capture a traitor who had caused the deaths of several spies and had also stolen secrets and sold them to the enemy. The worst part – that traitor is one of their very own spies. When Lucas sees George Oakford (Diana’s father) peeking from behind some shrubbery, he is surprised, but pleased to have some aid. Then, as Lucas is beginning to climb up the trellis to enter the house and capture the spy, shots ring out. Lucas is hit in the leg, loses his balance and falls, then another shot – and another. Lucas stirs to consciousness for a second and sees the dead body of George Oakford beside him. Grief! Then blackness.
Lucas’ injuries were grave and he wasn’t recovering well after six months. His wounds were not healing up as they should and his pain was almost unbearable. The Earl of Stalwood, Lucas’ boss, and head spymaster, needed Lucas back in action and he wanted to help his friend, so he approached Diana Oakford to take over Lucas’ treatment. Stalwood seemed to think that it might give both of them a chance to heal – Lucas from his injuries and guilt over the death of George and Diana from the loss of her father.
The attraction between Lucas and Diana is instant and it doesn’t take them long to get down to business – like rabbits. I thought that all happened a bit too quickly but I liked them as a couple. They complimented each other very well. Once they shared their deepest and darkest secrets they became even more invested in each other. Diana doesn’t trust men though and when she feels Lucas has betrayed secrets, she leaves him.
For me personally, I would have liked for the book to be just a bit longer and to include more action by the club members. The addition of an epilogue would have been good – maybe to be six months or so after the wedding and maybe show some development between Lucas and his mother. Another thing I would have liked to have seen is what happened to the family of Boyd Caldwell. I know what happened to George and would have liked to know if a similar fate befell Boyd’s family since it befell Diana.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the series is wonderful. I can highly recommend it.
The other books in the series are: The Daring Duke #1 Her Favorite Duke #2 The Broken Duke #3 The Silent Duke #4 The Duke of Nothing #5
"I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
Though titled the Duke of Willowby, Lucas Vincent has eschewed his duties and position in favor of his work as a spy for the War Department. He’s devoted years to his dangerous work, separating himself from his friends for their own safety. Now it seems his luck is running out as his latest mission nearly killed him. After six months he’s no closer to a full recovery, angry to be homebound, and his preoccupation with catching the traitor who nearly killed him is further impeding his healing.
Diana Oakford’s father was a highly skilled physician who worked for the War Department, so she’s family with the dealings of spies. She learned healing under her father’s tutelage so when a dear family friend asks her to help Lucas, she finds herself agreeing.
Left alone in a small cottage on the outskirts of London, the palpable connection between Lucas and Diana only grows. They’re both fighting painful emotions they’ve hidden for years and it’s soon apparent that Lucas needs healing in more than just his body and maybe Diana does too. Just as their relationship begins to solidify and edge toward more permanence, the case comes between them, leaving Lucas to decide between his duty and his commitment to protecting the woman who has come to mean everything to him.
I love this one. The forced proximity here was excellent and we really see Lucas and Diana’s relationship develop on the page, both in and out of the bedroom. Lucas had to learn how to express and accept a sort of unconditional love he’d never before experienced. There was also action, suspense and the right amount of drama for me. The conflict between Lucas and Diana stemmed from his attempts to protect her and wasn’t excessively drawn out so I really appreciated that minimal angst. It was nice to see a couple actually communicating and developing that level of trust to the point that they could confide in each other. I also loved that they were both vulnerable and both in need of healing and that was something they were able to find together. This is my favorite book of the series so far and quite possibly my favorite couple as well.
A little too insta-lust in the beginning of the story.
Vague character description of/about the heroine. (Mostly just descriptions of her hair color and hair style and her eye color and that she is stunning/pretty…. Everything else about her looks is rather vague almost nothing at all about her body type/shape or height or anything else.)
The character description of the hero was a little better but stil kind of vague. (He is tall and handsome and muscular…. Long hair and beard.)
Some parts of the story are a little bit too formulaic.
Some parts of the story felt rushed.
Repetitive.
That the heroes awful and toxic mother gets no real consequence/comeuppance for her cold and hateful/resentful behavior towards her own son. She does not apologize or change or really regret what she did to the hero when he was a child and teenager etc. They were estranged and should have stayed estranged…. The woman was just too toxic and cold for anything else to be believable.
The ending is kind of abrupt… some scenes from their wedding would have been great and with the other dukes also.
The “mystery” part of the story was a little too obvious.
A little more focus on the romance between the main characters was needed… because there was a little too much focus on lust and not love.
Both main characters needed a little more character development.
The plot was OK and not that bad… but a little thin in some places.
Believability/plausibility issues. The hero had been shot and injured badly in the line of duty and after 6 months he is still recovering…. He has been bedridden for 1 month and inactive for 6 months and in the beginning of the story the hero has trouble walking and getting dressed etc. and is rather weak and is more or less in constant pain from his injuries that have not healed as they should. But he is still muscular and lean etc. ? What about muscle deterioration/muscle atrophy? 🤔
This was a mixed read for me, where I essentially liked the characters individually and together as a couple, but I struggled with the pacing of the storyline, how events played out and connections that were acted on rather fast.
This book takes a trope I really enjoy ‘the wounded duke’, so I was excited to read about Lucas Willoughby. Lucas was a spy for the government and injured in espionage trying to unroot a traitor. His long-time friend and surgeon is killed. Months later he is brought to a gifted healer, Diana, daughter of the surgeon. Diana was a wonderful character, strong despite her grief and truly gifted. However, this is where my brain did a screeching halt at how events then played out. I wanted a slower build of the relationship between the main characters.
The back stories to these two characters were well thought out and I savoured these details and richness it brought to the story. More emphasis on the healing aspects would have floated my boat too.
I will definitely continue to read Jess Michaels even though this particular book didn’t totally float my boat.
Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, has been injured during a mission and has almost died. It has been six months and he still hasn't healed. Diana Oakford has been trained by her father, who is a doctor for the War Dept. She is asked to step in and see if she can help Lucas. What great characters, they are so believable and vivacious. The plot is complicated, there are all kinds of twists to this story. There is danger, intrigue, and lies. I really enjoyed their first kiss and how it affected both of them. Lucas, she finds him very masculine, sexy and hard to keep her eyes off him. I am so glad I got a chance to read this book and look forward to more of the author's work. I received this ARC free and voluntarily reviewed it.
Mi aiuterai a dimenticare?»
This series is lovely. It truly is. You really need to start at the beginning and read all the way through. Each story has something to treasure in it.
I LOVE spy novels. Especially historical ones. I also have a major weakness for “wounded warrior” stories. The injured soldier is my favorite troupe. This story was both, and I loved it. I mean, I’m still sitting here fanning myself. Whew. That was a good one.
They started by off rushing to bed quickly, and it was a little off putting for me. Not because it was done badly in any way, I just was afraid sex was going to drive the story. I should’ve known better than to doubt Jess that way. It was perfect. Just the right amount of fireworks.
My favorite moment in the story came along with some cameos by well loved friends from past books. I love checking in with the old gang. The story also has an element of mystery, which I was crazy about. I read the whole second half of the book in about an hour. I could not wait to see what would happen next. The mystery resolves itself well, and a happily ever after is a sure thing.
As always after a Jess Michaels story, I am anxiously awaiting the next installment! I have to know what is going on with Hugh. I HAVE TO. Until then, I shall reread the whole series another time. 🙂
After tragedy strikes while on a mission Lucas needs healing, physically and mentally. As the daughter of a well known surgeon familiar with the ways of spies, Diana is the perfect person for the job. From the start these two had great chemistry that quickly boiled into something more.
It was nice having a different kind of heroine with Diana . The fact that she was a respected young women, but far from society was refreshing. Both, Lucas and Diana, had secrets that were quite large for the time period. I loved how supportive their were to each other.
The mystery surrounding the story was nicely written. While, the traitor was obvious to me I thought it was nicely done and wrapped up.
I loved how Lucas protected Diana without being overbearing and still allowing her some independence. As always...I love seeing previous characters and being updated on their lives. We also see hints of mystery coming from the unmatched characters. I for one can't wait to find out what these elusive lords are hiding.
While their story is not my favorite (Graham and Adelaide still hold the title for me) I really enjoyed this story and can't wait until Matthew and Isabel's story next.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lukas may be the Duke of Willowby, but in name only. He joined the war department and became a spy before he took over his duties. Leaving the only life he knew behind him for the excitement of being an undercover spy has left him battered and broken. He is trying to recover from a vicious attack and the daughter of his dead comrade, Diana Oakland, might be his saving grace.
I loved this book, it is definitely my favorite in this series so far. Lukas is everything you want in a leading man. He is brave but broken, scarred, and sexy. Diana is a strong leading lady who can hold her own in any situation. Lukas and Diana's chemistry is off the charts and there are plenty of steamy love scenes to enjoy. But, it's the action and intrigue, that kept me hooked from the word go. This is a very exciting read!
As with every other book I have read in this series, I can't wait for the next Duke!
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher through Net Galley***
I received this book for free from Netgalley in order to prepare an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
FINAL DECISION: I enjoyed this book because of the relationship between Lucas and Diana. Some of the historical reality was lacking, but the cautious and slow unfolding of these characters made this book an enjoyable journey.
THE STORY: Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, has been a spy for the crown for years. Grievously injured in his last assignment, Lucas is sent to Diana Oakford to recover. Diana is the daughter of one of the men killed in the mission where Lucas was injured. Having been burned by the spies who surrounded her father before, Diana knows better than to give her heart to such a man. The attraction between her and Lucas, however, burns from the beginning. And as they agree to an affair, each believes that they can keep the relationship on a physical level, but things get complicated (on many levels) as they work together to find the traitor who almost killed Lucas.
OPINION: I have really been enjoying this series. The stories, while serious in tone, are not particularly deep or disturbing. They are a nice read that I can finish in a day and which don't haunt me for days after. The books emphasize the relationship between the characters and the plot really works in service of that relationship.
Diana and Lucas are similar characters. Pain in their lives has taught them to keep their distance. As they start their relationship, there is plenty of sex but little relationship. Usually I dislike these instant sex books, but it really works here. The sex begins to allow these characters to open up to one another. Then there are small moments of revelation and caring that draw them out of their self-protective shells.
Because much of the book takes place solely between these two characters, the relationship really worked for me. There are hot encounters but also moments of tenderness.
Then there is the spy plot. Some of the resolution seemed obvious, but there were some interesting surprises. There isn't a lot of "story" in the plot, but I also enjoyed that because while I certainly like deep plot filled books, I really prefer books where the relationship is the focus and gets the primary focus in the story.
WORTH MENTIONING: This book is front loaded with the sexual encounters which lessen as the plot picks up.
CONNECTED BOOKS: THE UNDERCOVER DUKE is the sixth book in the 1797 Club series. There are overlapping characters, but this book can be read completely as a standalone.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.
NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to prepare a review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.
In February 1811 Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby secretly a spy and working for the War Department knew something was wrong. While trying to flush out a traitor to king and country Lucas notices his good friend and surgeon George Oakford hiding in the bushes too but in trying to kill the traitor Lucas gets shot instead and George is instantly killed. In fall of 1811 Lucas has been slowly healing when George’s daughter Diana is asked by the superior of the Department to take care and heal Lucas. Diana is definitely her father’s daughter, skilled in the ways of healing she can’t refuse even though in first meeting Lucas the animosity between the two is strong. As Diana works with Lucas and heals him she falls into a passionate physical sexual affair with him. The rules between both Diana and Lucas is finite that it is just that an affair. As Diana and Lucas get closer to finding out the truth of who killed Diana’s father and slowly fall for each other their attraction and love for each could end up killing them both if they aren’t careful. This was a wonderful story by Ms. Jess Michaels and the only one I have read in the 1797 Club series which is definitely a fault of my own. Yes this book can be read a standalone and easily understood. The story is filled with tons of plot, suspense, action, and romance. The sex is quite steamy but doesn’t slow down the story even though it happens pretty quickly helps further the plot. This book definitely put me in the heart of these well-drawn out characters and love them that much more. Lucas at first came off prickly, brash, stubborn and was not really a nice guy but he was injured so I can forgive him for that. Still despite his crabby demeanor he had so much heart, compassion and really cared for others especially Diana. Lucas made for a great book boyfriend who is now added to my ever growing list. Diana was no slouch either she was strong, smart, independent, witty and brilliant. Diana really had iron strength of will and wasn’t no wilting heroine or a damsel in distress. She could stand up for herself and Lucas. I couldn’t help but girl crush on her. This book makes me want to read the rest of the series and if all the dukes are like Lucas I will enjoy reading them without hesitation!
Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby is the youngest of the 1797 Club dukes and the most reclusive. He has not been a character in the previous books and has only been mentioned in passing by the other dukes. This book opens with Lucas being gravely injured along and his dear friend and surgeon for the war department, George Oakford being killed.
Six months later, Spymaster, Lord Stalwood comes to see Diana Oakford, George's daughter. He needs her help, Lucas is still alive, but his wounds have not healed and none of the doctors who have treated him have been able to help him. Stalwood is hoping that Diana can work a miracle. Diana has lost so much, but she knows that her father cared for Lucas and agrees to help him.
Lucas is not the easiest patient, and when he learns who she is, he apologizes, he blames himself for her father's death. Diana refuses to let him take the blame and tells him they will begin his treatment, she asks for a month and he agrees and gives into the temptation, and kisses her.
In short order, these two become lovers and the love scenes fairly scorched my kindle! But soon they are sharing more than their bodies, secrets are exchanged and plans are made to find her father's killer. Lucas reconnects with the dukes and hopes to draw out the traitor, but he has suspicions that he will not share and when Diana learns of them - the truth may rip them apart before they ever really came together.
This book is well written, flows well, has smoking hot love scenes, several appearances by the other dukes and their wives, lots of secrets, some betrayal and a twist that changes everything! I liked this book, but for me, I didn't feel the connection between Lucas and Diana like I did for the previous characters and the ending left me with more questions than answers, but I still enjoyed the story and would be happy to recommend the book.
This is the sixth book in the series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title without any problem.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*
Ten teens at boarding school form a club to assist one another as they grow into their positions of being dukes one day - The 1797 Club - this series is already plotted out to have ten volumes starring the ten original members of the club. Over the years a bond stronger and closer, in some ways, than that of blood brothers is formed. In each book of the series we find out what has become of the members of the club and who they will find their HEA with.
In book six we meet Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, the youngest member of the 1797 club. After learning something that rocked his world he left for the military, became a spy and avoided family and friends for around a decade. As the story begins he is spying, wounded and is not healing as he should so is sent to Diana Oakford, daughter of the recently deceased Spymaster’s main surgeon, to see if she can work some magic and make him well.
Lucas is in pain and not the nicest person to be around but in spite of that he is a gentleman, wants to get better so he agrees to let Diana treat his wounds for a month. Of course Lucas and Diana are attracted to one another and feel some sizzle so with eyes open wide they agree to engage in a tryst. As is so often true, trysts can engender feelings, sharing and caring. Eventually they begin to work together to uncover who the traitor in the midst of the spies might be and in so doing expose...more than they might have wished to.
So many secrets! So many twists and turns! So much fun to read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. It is not your common garden variety of historical romance but instead has interesting and intriguing main characters that really made an impact on me. I am eager to read what comes next and have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and am glad there are several more books to read before it finishes.
Thank you to the author who bequeathed me an ARC through NetGalley – This is my honest review.
A story of how love and trust and partnership can renew lost hopes and dreams. Secrets and lies weigh heavily on our hero and heroine. Tragic events have changed everything, futures they once dreamed of are no longer insight. Lucas Vincent, “The Undercover Duke” Duke of Willowby, separated himself from family and through the years friends being a spy for the crown. Recently severely injured Lucas is left in terrible pain and guilt ridden from the friend he could not save, Dr. William Oakford. His superiors need to keep him hidden but with their best healer dead they turn to the next best person Diana Oakford, William’s daughter. Diana’s mother passed when she was young all she had was her father, he raised her the only way he knew, to be a healer. Several years ago her heart was broken and her life changed forever. She put away her hopes and dreams and focused on her plants and herbs. The last thing Diana wants to do is help the people who took her father away for so much of her life. When she’s told its The Undercover Duke, a man her father talked of like a son she could not turn him away. Lucas is surly and rude and in such horrible pain that he’s unable to move about much with out help. When Lucas realizes who Diana is he’s swamped with guilt and demands to leave not wanting to drag her into this mess. They strike up a deal, a month of doing what Diana thinks will help then he can leave. Their attraction is instant but neither want a relationship but can’t seem to resist each other. As the days go by Lucas gets stronger and their relationship grows to friendship and trust. Lucas gives Diana on thing that she’s never had, to make her own decisions and choices. Can they count on each other when they need each other the most or will old hurts and secrets get in their way? There are some great twists and turns that I did not see coming. I love Jess Michaels writing a story telling.
Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, had a very unhappy life joined the war and later the War Department and became a spy. Lucas is a member of the 1797 Duke’s club whom we have never met, he left the group when he was sixteen after he found out why his parents hated him and he felt he didn’t deserve to be a part of the club any longer. Diana Oakford lost her mother when she was very young and had only her father left. Her father was a doctor who worked for the War Department and he taught Diane all about the art of healing herbs and medicine. Simon was injured six months ago and still not fully healed and he’s to Diana Oakford. She knows her father always thought of Lucas as a son so she’s not surprised to learn her father was helping the Lucas on his mission when he was killed. Loved this story of a wounded spy and his lady doctor who are physically drawn to each other, both are needing to heal and find themselves physically attracted to each other. Their fiery passion leads to a steamy, provocative love scenes and an intriguing plot with a mystery to solve finding the traitor within the War Department. We get to see some old friends from the Duke’s Club which always fun read!!! This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I am an unabashed Jess Michaels fan and I eagerly await new instalments in the 1797 Club series. Thankfully Ms Michaels does not leave her fans waiting, publishing a new entry ever two months. The Undercover Duke is the sixth instalment in Ms Michaels 1797 club series. While a series, the author has crafted a story that stands perfectly well on its own, however I would strongly recommend reading the series as it is one of my favourites. Ms Michaels ability to craft steamy, provocative love scenes and an intriguing plot will have the reader hooked. In this instalment Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, has been injured while operating as a spy for the War Office. On the hunt for a traitor he is injured, and his mentor killed. Following six months of various treatments, his superior sends him to a healer hoping she will have more success than doctors have. Unfortunately, she is also the daughter of his deceased friend and Lucas feels guilty for not saving her father. Diana Oakford is still grieving the loss of her father and experience has taught her distrust and wariness when it comes to handsome men. Initially fighting the attraction, she feels, Diana enters in to a sexual relationship with Lucas with one caveat, she must not get pregnant. When Lucas decides to re-join society to flush out the traitor, Diana agrees to go with him and pose as his mistress. Each hold onto secrets that could drive them apart and with dangers lurking and a surprise discovery can these two overcome the obstacles in their way and reach their happy ever after? Once again, I was blown away by Ms Michaels talent and the passion and intensity of the romance. The characters are well crafted, the plot will grip you with a perfect balance of steam, romance and suspense. If you have not read any of Ms Michaels offerings I urge you to do so now.
Lucas Vincent may be the Duke of Willowby but he’s never acted as such. He’s been too busy working for the War Department as a spy. But years of dangerous work has finally caught up to him and he was involved in a violent attack that nearly killed him. Six months later & Lucas is still in tremendous pain so his superior Stalford takes him to Diana Oakford daughter of George Oakford a physician who was killed when Lucas was injured. She’s been trained in healing so agrees to help Lucas & they agree to try for a month. Another engrossing page turning read in the 1797 club series. This is the sixth book & is as good as the previous five. It could be read on its own but seriously why would you when the whole series is so very good & as each new novel appears the whole fraternity of the dukes grows & draws you further in. Lucas & Diana both have their secrets which they’ve kept to themselves but as well as healing Lucas’ wounds Diana also helps him & herself heal from the heartache of their pasts. The characters are very well portrayed & their attraction is immediate & only grows as they get to know each other. However things aren’t straightforward & their trust of each other is strongly put to the test. I so look forward to the next book in the series. This whole series is a keeper for me & I relish the days when I can binge re read the whole series.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This 6th book in Jess Michael’s 1797 Club is about a wounded duke who has lived his life as a spy, and the daughter of a War Department doctor who trained alongside her now deceased father. When Lucas Vincent, Duke of Willowby, is brought to Diana Oakford, his body broken and sore, it is soon obvious that Lucas and Diana both have deep wounds that are more than physical. As an attachment forms between the two, they must face the past, struggle with the present, and learn if they can trust in each other to build a future together. A great story with just enough mystery, sizzle and especially romance. Looking forward to the next in this series.
This is a cracking series, I hate the wait for each new book! Ms Michaels is a fab author. She creates great characters and weaves engaging tales. I’m not sure how she is staying at the top of her game.
Here we have two strong and interesting characters. I really loved reading about a useful woman. Myself I felt the physicality of the relationship happened a little too fast or perhaps not enough insight. The story for this book is perhaps the most intricate after all it’s about spies!!!!
Please start at the beginning and read the whole series. You’ll love it
I got an ARC from netgalley but as always I make up my own mind and I’m never influenced by an ARC in deciding if I liked a book or not
Lucas as lived with the guilt of getting Diana's father killed for months. When she ends up being the healer that is to take care of him and they find they have a mutual attraction, he is even more conflicted than he was. As Lucas starts to heal, they get even closer. But that all changes when Lucas gets close to finding the traitor that tried to killed him all those months ago. Will finding out the truth ruin the relationship that Diana and Lucas have developed?
I really enjoyed both Lucas and Diana. Their attraction for each other instantaneous, but I loved watching it turned into someone so much more. It was also nice to see some of the other Dukes and their ladies!! I'm so excited for the next book in the series which stars the Duke of Tyndale!
Jess Michaels is a smooth operator. She tempts with romance and delivers so much more. The Undercover Duke begins with a mystery. Lucas has many secrets that just might get him killed. When his double life leaves him at his most vulnerable, he finds an angel in Diana. Diana is a fearless woman with a healing hand and her own baggage to bear. Diana and Lucas walk a fine line between love and lust as they try to stay a step ahead of the danger that stalks them. Ms. Michaels stories are alluring tales of courage that never get old.
I was expecting to like this one but not as much as I did. It had chemistry, plot, character growth, smut and the plot twist wasn’t the most obvious thing in the world. Yes obvious but not LEMME HAND IT TO YOU obvious. Diana and Lucas have been my favourite couple so far in this series. I wish we got to see more of her as a healer but you still got to see her intelligence in other ways. Definitely read the content warnings before this authors book but none bothered me in this one.
I was feeling generous with the five stars, but at any rate, this book is HIGHLY enjoyable. It’s the kind of book that, if you happen to read it after a bunch of other books that don’t quite make the grade, makes you relax into the writing and think, “Oh. Right. This is how pleasurable reading should be.”
What can I say, I love Ms. Michaels’ stories. They pull you in, they are riveting, heartwarming and sigh-worthy. The loss that Lucas and Diana experience is devastating. Can they come back to be even a part of their former selves? Lucas and Diana learn to lean on each other for comfort and slowly love works its way into their hearts. They work together, sometimes reluctantly, to discover who the traitor is amongst Lucas’ den of spies. What they find out is not what they expected and can pull them apart. I thought this would be one book I might not shed a tear, but of course I did. Also, seeing Lucas come back to his old friends in the 1797 Club is like coming home to family.
A complimentary copy was provided by the author through NetGalley.
Why did it take me so long to read this?? I absolutely adored Diana and Lucas. This book has romance, mystery, secrets and exactly what I need in a romance book, a couple with such perfect chemistry. Can’t wait for the last book!
Carino, devo ammetterlo.
OMG.... What a book. Another winner from Jess Michaels. The emotion was there, the hotness was there, the tension was there . It was refreshing to read about an Heroine that was not a wallflower anymore. Both characters had their secrets but it was good that they got revealed as the book progressed. Bring on the next book in the series. I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review that is all my own.
