(Anbe Aaramuthe) (Novel)

Janakiraman is the master of dealing the complex relationship stories that are far ahead of his time.
This book goes into my regret book list. My life would've been different if I read this book 10 years ago.

My Love, My Endless Bliss by T. Janakiraman, originally written in Tamil as Anbe Aaramuthe, is a profound exploration of human relationships and psychological complexities over time. At its core, the novel tells the story of a reluctant groom who flees on the eve of his wedding. Thirty years later, now a sannyasi named Ananthasaami, he unexpectedly meets the woman he was once meant to marry. Their renewed connection forms the heart of a deeply layered narrative that challenges societal norms around love, companionship, and duty.
The novel delicately traces the evolution of their unusual friendship while simultaneously weaving in the lives of other characters each boldly shaping their own destinies, questioning moral conventions, and navigating life on their own terms. These parallel stories offer a nuanced commentary on ethical dilemmas and the blurred lines between right and wrong. His sensitive writing explores the complexities of the human mind and human emotions, and the ways they clash with societal norms and traditions, leading to violations and crossing of boundaries set by the society.
In the end, the story leaves us with a sense of quiet resolution. Like many of Janakiraman’s works, it doesn’t just conclude it lingers, leaving the reader with the comforting thought that these characters, in all their complexity, continue to live quietly somewhere in Madras.

This appeared as a serial in Kalki during 1961-62.
All the Kalki magazines are available in Archive.org.
It is very interesting to read the novel in bits and pieces. 1961's Madras, Delhi, the people their life.
Thi. Jaa describes them as seen in a movie.
