This is the second book in the Heart Resort series and I loved it. We are introduced to Chris and Eden Puso in book one and this is their story.
Marriage of convenience. Marriage in trouble. Secret identity. Only one bed. Family. Friends to lovers. I love the tropes!
While this is an unusual set up for a contemporary romance, it worked for me. Chris and Eden both grow throughout this story. At the same time, Marcelo shows us how they grew over the course of their marriage, with flashback scenes to different moments in their shared past. I like that window into the past, into their relationship, knowing what baggage they've brought to this point. Can they save their marraige? Do they want to? It's a question each character has to ask themselves and each other. Using the resort's couples retreat as a way to put them in different situations, helps keep the setting alive, as well as different avenues to explore where they are and what they want from their marriage.
Pacing is excellent, with chapter breaks at just the right moments. I liked being in both POVs and found both characters very sympathetic. That's no small feat, as I found Chris to be insufferable in book 1. He was overbearing and cold and the apparent problems between he and Eden seemed obvious with his obnoxious behavior. Now, Chris gets to be human. Even when they were bickering, I got it. It felt real. Each character had moments when they needed to be hit over the head, as it were, and that all worked. There is less family involvement than in the first book, when a lot of character motivation was about family. Nevertheless, family is still important. Eden is often torn at the impact their relationship will or could have on the family. Chris and Eden are both directed by their roles as the oldest in the family, the caretakers. But who is taking care of them? And are they taking care of each other?
The little side issue of the neighboring resort causing problems, had just the right amount of involvement. I don't know if it will pop up again, it does seem to be set up. And we have more family members who need their own HEAs, so anything is possible. I did like seeing the Puso family again, and I enjoy the cultural elements that Marcelo includes. Adding Eden's family to the mix was a good choice and helped show how many choices and people were pulling on Eden and impacting her decisions. Chris always thought he was doing "the best for the family" but has to learn that just because he thinks so, doesn't mean it is so.
Sexy times are on the page but this is a book about emotions and angst, more than heat. The chemistry is real between these two, because of course a marriage of convenience has heat between the two main characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can't wait for the next in the series. Highly recommend
