Dragons Burden slows down a bit for me.

This forth novel in Robert Vane's series got bogged down for me.
I guess it just depends on how much you love to read about fighting lol. But I got tired of seeing Bayloo never come out on top no matter how much he tried.

This volume appears a lot more focused on action at first, but in the background, Bayloo being an outsider to his own kind, and the resulting feeling of loneliness is strong.
Then, a brutal turn is taken in which the lust for power of some is added to the already dire threat of the rust.

At this point, you're invested in the series or you wouldn't be reading this, so I'm going to skip the nonsense. Character development and interaction continue to be strong points, and Bayloo continues to be a very sulky, but relatable dragon (that's his best feature, really).

The story at this point is on full steam ahead, no stopping now, but that's to be expected in book 4 of 5. I think the author falls into the very same trap I've seen from large fantasy writers like Robert Jordan and George Martin, which is foreshadowing that doesn't go anywhere. It's easy to write something that you really want to be an interesting part of the story, only to not have room for it later. The expert writer knows when to cut it out in editing (really hard to do when it's your precious, I know).

That being said, I've got much respect for him plowing ahead and finishing it out (*cough* Rothfuss *cough*), doing his best to bring the story together and (in the next book) capping off the events began in the first novel. This is a good story and well worth the read.

The fight against the enemy that is the rust continues in book 4, and like the previous book, it is filled with action and plot development that perfectly sets up the series for, what seems to be, a very interesting finale and a return to Rolm in book 5.

Lots of tough decisions and actions, but still as exciting as ever to read. Bayloo is still a wonderfully quirky and amusing character and I cannot wait to see how his story concludes in the next book.

decent sequel

Bayloo returns to Ni-Yota burdened by what he learnt from the Oracle.

The rust continues its relentless spread amongst a growing civil war in Ni-Yota, caused by this who seek power for their own ends.

Can Bayloo find a path to do the impossible?

Book 4 was another decent one. These books are quite short but it’s drawing to a close and I definitely enjoy the character growth of Bayloo. I hope he finds happiness in the last book.

This was just as good as the previous book, if not better! Bayloo is learning and maturing, growing more cautious and cunning. I was hoping the rust would take a backseat as it's a bit of a bore to have the same enemy for multiple books, but it looks like he will soon journey away from Ni-Yota and we'll have a different plot for awhile, which will be good.

I like how real Bayloo feels! He's not too cool or good. His personality feels well fleshed out and flawed.
The story seems to be screaming that he's going to be the leader of the dragons, but I don't think he's got that at all. He's very adamant he doesn't want that position, and I don't think he'd be a good fit for it.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. My only critique is that it can drag a little in the middle, as we end up with very similar battles occurring multiple times in a row (Not enough to subtract a star though, id probably give it 4.5 if I could), but I still very much enjoyed reading more adventures from our beloved dragon, Bayloo, with his best buddy Harlan Dor at his side.

interesting perspective

I liked the fact that the book is written from the dragon’s perspective. Interesting, lots of action, fun read. Great for fantasy lovers.
