Elspeth Marshall hasn’t forgotten the enthralling man she met at a fair two years ago. They may have only spent an afternoon together, but they bonded over their shared love of legends and their connection was undeniable. When she meets him by chance at an inn in the Highlands, she’s surprised to find that his name isn’t really Roy, as she knew him, and the legend he told of an ancient sword may be all too real. Angered at first, Elspeth demands answers from him and quickly settles down to learn the truth about this unforgettable man and the sword.
Tavish Crawford, Lord Strathclyde, has been cursing his foolishness in taking the legendary sword to Culloden with him. He lost it when he was wounded and now word of its power has spread, leaving Tavish scrambling against a nefarious secret society to find it. At the same time, he seeks to further his relationship with Elspeth, whom he’s never forgotten. When the inn is overtaken by a band from the society, Tavish will do anything necessary to protect the sword and, more importantly, the woman he has come to love.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Elspeth and Tavish had an instant connection to be sure, but they’d never have overcome all the obstacles facing them if they hadn’t communicated so openly. This happened almost right from the start and that made this delightful to read. I always love it when the main characters work together against an outside force rather than conflict being derived from their relationship, so this was just right in that regard, no game playing here. This was an utterly charming prequel and I also loved the introduction of Welsh legends. I’ve only read one of the books in this series, but I definitely want to go fill in the gaps now.

MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE READ THE SERIES FIRST?
When reading this novella I kend of felt like I was missing something. Though it totally works a stand alone novella, I still think I might have gotten more out of it, if I knew the rest of the series. Still, it was enjoyable and a fun way to spend a couple of hours. Historical fantasy is something that I actually really enjoy but don't really read a lot of, so it was nice to get it here.

Elspeth: Elspeth is a story teller and collector. I found that to be really interesting and original and I enjoyed it. I also really liked that it was this side of Elspeth that made Tavish attracted to her and made him want to get to know her.
👎 What I Disliked 👎
Romance: I am a little sad to say this, but I didn't feel the romance or chemistry between Elspeth and Tavish. It just didn't leap of the page and I couldn't connect with them as a couple. I think it just happened too fast and without any real connection between them, aside from a kiss and a shared interest, to sell the romance to me.

Two years later, Elspeth is traveling with her aunt when they are forced to make an unplanned stop at an inn due to the snowy weather. In the common room hears bits and pieces of a story that sounds familiar, of a sword that flames red-orange – Lann Dhearg, in an effort to hear more, she moves closer to the men talking, explains she records stories and would like to include theirs. When the English soldiers begin to harass the men, another man intervenes – a man that has haunted her dreams for two long years, Roy Williams. But this man doesn’t seem to recognize her, a slight she is not willing to let pass.

So before Elspeth and Tavish can even think about HEA – they will have to reclaim Lann Dhearg and defeat the members of the Order – a feat easier said than done.
I really enjoyed this prequel to the Legendary Rogues series, it is a well written, fast paced novella with a nod to the movie “Die Hard”. This book has it all, wonderful characters, action, steamyish love scenes, a bit of mystery, some intrigue and finally a great HEA complete with an epilogue! If you have read the series, this is a great addition and introduces “The Order” – if you haven’t read it, this novella is a great introduction to the series – but let me warn you to be prepared to be sucked into the “Thirteen Treasures” and the Heroes and Heroines who seek them!!

It has been six years since the first book in the Legendary Rogues series and a year since the last book in the series – now, we see the very beginning – and it is a rousing, action-filled adventure for sure. The characters are wonderful, and well developed – which is a hard thing to do in a novella. As always, the writing is excellent, the plot was tight and well-executed, and the introduction to “The Order” will suck you right into the series. If you have already read the series, you will still love this prequel – and if you haven’t read the series, you’ll be sucked right in and want to read the rest of the books.
Elspeth Marshall is a gifted storyteller. Not only does she tell the stories, but she actively seeks out and records old legends and stories. At the Lammas festival, she is entertaining a crowd of children and some adults by recounting one of her favorite tales, when she notices a handsome man paying close attention as well. He becomes a lively part of the discussion after the tale and adds some intriguing additions – some details Elspeth dearly wants to know and to record. She spends time with the man, Roy Williams after she is finished with the storytelling and thinks she might have just met the man of her dreams. When he leaves, he also leaves the impression that he’ll return – soon.
Roy Williams – aka John McLean and Tavish Crawford – is a man of many mysteries. He’s never forgotten the lovely lass he met at the Lammas festival two years ago. He was sorely smitten with her, but he couldn’t return to her. While he’s not a Jacobite, many in his family are – and he lost his sword at the battle of Culloden. He’s been looking for it ever since – he must find it. It is a centuries-old sword – a treasure – twin blade to the legendary Dyrnwyn which is one of the Thirteen Treasures of Britain sought by the Order of the Round Table. They must not learn of his sword Lann Dhearg.
A snowstorm reunites Roy/John/Tavish and Elspeth at a small inn. He is in search of Lann Dhearg and has heard stories that brought him here, and she is traveling with her aunt who stopped because of the snow. After a confrontation, she agrees to hear his tale and his excuses. Unbeknownst to them, dark forces are about to descend on that small inn. All who are there are in dire peril. Elspeth and Tavish will have to work together to find and protect Lann Dhearg and the other guests at the inn. While doing that, they discover each other and a love that will set your heart aflutter.
There are lots of things to love about this novella. Aside from the lovely characters and a wonderful romance, there is a great introduction to the Order of the Round Table and the Thirteen Treasures of Britain which is the focus of the remaining books in the series. Another fun thing is the Easter Eggs you’ll find within the book – the author paid a bit of an homage to Die Hard and you’ll find those Easter Eggs if you are a fan of the movie. If not, you’ll never notice.
I definitely recommend this fun and exciting novella and I hope you will love it as much as I did.

The Legend of a Rogue is the prequel to Darcy Burke's Legendary Rogues series and is influenced by the movie Die Hard and filled with easter eggs. The might sound weird considering this is a historical romance, but it was prefect.
I've really enjoyed this series and the adventures in each book, so I was glad to be able to read a prequel to the series. Both Elspeth and Tavish were such lovely characters, and even though it was short by nature as a prequel both characters had depth and I was invested in them and their story.
I love that when Elspeth detects that he is lying to her, she is not afraid to call him out and teach him a lesson. She was already a great character, but I really loved her after that. And I wasn't sure about Tavish at first when it was clear that he was not what he seemed and was pretending not to know her, but what a dream he was.
There is romance and a bit of mystery, as well as a sense of adventure and danger even though everything takes place in a small village in the area surrounding
I would love to perhaps see more books added to the series someday searching for the remaining of the 13 treasures. I still have the last book in the series left to read though, so I'm not sure yet if things end in a place to allow for more books. But even if it turns out that there will be no more books, I've quite enjoyed the series so far and am happy that there was a prequel added, which I will reread at some point. I'm looking forward to reading the fourth book, Captivating the Scoundrel next and am curious to see where if that will see all the treasures accouted for.
If you haven't read the four full-length books in this series, I definitely recommend giving them a read after this novellla. Each one is it's own adventure as the characters seek to find the treasures. We don't see Elspeth and Tavish again in those books, but the main characters of those books are all connected.

I enjoyed this story, the writing style is essential but effective and characters are charming, witty, almost tangible.
The only problem I had with this prologue (it's sort of a novella, 140 pages long) is that I have not read the series first. And, at times, I felt lost in a familiar but not completely known world.
I suggest starting the series with book 1 "Lady of desire" and, eventually, go back and read "The legend of a Rogue". The name of the series is "Legendary Rogues".

2.5 stars really. Look, this is a free prequel. It's entertaining. But I won't be bothering to read the rest.
Basically, this thing sets up the idea of 13 mythic treasures of England, which I assume are the basis for quests in the later series. This is set right after Culloden, so there's a lot of discussion around having jacobite sympathies, and other people searching for Jacobites. And then the group that is searching for one of the treasures, or I suppose somehting treasure-adjacent.
And it's all fine. I just found the prose a bit simplistic. And it didn't feel like a particularly well-developped world. I also found the attack/fighting at the end a bit much.
The one good thing is the main couple themselves. I actually really bought them as a couple, and their case of instant attraction. And I don't usually invest in that particular trope when it's done. But this was done well. I totally bought the connection. Perhaps because it was done over a story. Easily the best part of this.

Elspeth Marshall a storyteller met Roy Williams two years ago. Caught in a snowstorm Elspeth & her aunt take shelter in an inn where she sees Roy but he says his name is John McLean but he then reveals he's Tavish Crawford. A well written lovely story with strong characters. The search is on for a misplaced magical sword but others are also searching & will stop at nothing to find it. An engrossing read which I read in a sitting

This is a fast paced novella that hooked me from the beginning. Has a fantasy aspect I wasn’t expecting (haven’t seen this in a historical romance before) but I found enjoyable (I do enjoy fantasy).
It is based around mythical items and a magical sword so mysterious most have never heard of it. Enjoy the mixture of romance and light fantasy.
Enjoyed the chemistry between Elspeth & Tavish. Liked that this went beyond their physical attraction to each other.

Also enjoyed the heist/ hostage situation that unfolds with the Order of the Round Table. Appreciated that Elspeth didn’t play the damsel in distress in this situation.
There was a good level of suspense and mystery to keep you invested in the story.

Also enjoyed the heist/ hostage situation that unfolds with the Order of the Round Table. Appreciated that Elspeth didn’t play the damsel in distress in this situation.
There was a good level of suspense and mystery to keep you invested in the story.

The title as well as the amazing cover immediately caught my attention, and although I am not a fan of this genre, I decided to give this book a chance, and believe me I did not regret it. I enjoyed every moment of this enchanting story, which is filled with twists and secrets. Both the hero and the heroine are simply amazing. She is a great storyteller, smart, sassy, and intelligent. He is the brave, dangerous as hell, and twice as hot devil that manages to capture her heart from the very beginning. I was not pleased with the ‘insta’ love and believe that such love deserves more detailed elaboration. It felt a bit far-fetched and odd, but I’m not complaining about their steamy moments, which were perfect.
Filled with magic that usually surrounds the legends of King Arthur and his famous knights, and an endearing love tale, this book is a nice getaway from everyday life.

Elspeth is known for her storytelling abilities. One afternoon a handsome stranger captures her interest with a thrilling tale about a mystical sword and then with a searing kiss. Two years later, she meets that handsome stranger again but the man she remembers is not the same man she meets. A mysterious sword is not the only tale spun all those years ago.
The last thing Tavish expected was to run into the enchanting Elspeth again let alone that all his secrets would be in jeopardy when they meet again. He's never forgotten the lass who enchanted his mind and heart all those years ago. But he is on a mission to find his ancestral sword, most recently sited at the battle of Culloden, before nefarious forces threaten to take the sword and the woman who is now his heart.

This was a quick and easy read. Novellas are always tough for me to review but I thought Burke did a good job of creating enough backstory on the main characters in the short amount of time she had, to keep me invested and interested in what was going to happen for them.
Definitely pick this one up if you enjoy Burke's other books. This has action, swoons, and interesting characters...all my favorite pieces of a historical romance!

If you love stories about magical treasures you won’t want to miss out on this story! This is the prequel to Darcy’s Legendary Rogues series and goes back to after the battle at Culloden and gives us a story of a sword called Lann Dhearg that flames in battle. Elspeth and Tavish work together to find the sword and protect it from a group that are hunting for treasures like it.
Elspeth has been telling stories of these legendary treasures for years and the story of Lann Dhearg told to her by a stranger leaves her wanting to know more and it and him. I loved that she collected these stories so they wouldn’t be lost forever and how brave she was at all times. She was hurt when he never returned and was shocked to see him two years later going by a different name.
Tavish always meant to go back to Elspeth, but he had to find Lann Dhearg after losing it at Culloden. He knew the sword was powerful and he needed to protect his family’s legacy before it ended up in the wrong hands. I loved the moment he figured out the secret to controlling the sword’s power and when he made it clear he wanted to marry her. Who he really is was a surprise I didn’t see coming and I loved it.

Elspeth knew what she wanted, and who, Tavish was a delectable delight she couldn’t resist, but first, he had some explaining to do she knew his answer would be the deciding factor in if they had a future together. Tavish knew he was on thin ice, he knew his answer would tell if they had a life together or not. A delightfully sweet, endearing, and enticing read.

I came in on the series late and was a bit lost and would have benefited from reading this first. I believe that the future books – the original series ��� deals with the heirs of Tavish and Elspeth and this is their story.
What I liked:

* Elspeth’s inner knowledge that she wanted to collect stories and would not settle into a marriage just to please her family

Not only does Roy know the story Elspeth's telling, but he knows details she doesn't. They share a few stories, a couple heated kisses, then go their separate ways, with the promise to meet again.
Two years later, Elspeth runs into Roy again, only this time he's pretending not to know her. Upon confronting Roy, Elspeth learns he's not who he claimed to be. His given name is actually Tavish, but that's not even his biggest secret. There's a reason Tavish knows do much about the legendary sword everyone is looking for. Ms. Burke gives readers another delightful read in the Legendary Rogue series. A sword that is twin to one of legend and there are those who are after it for its ability to produce flames. The sword feeds off evil and only one man is able to handle it, but it has been lost. Tavish has been looking for the sword lost to him on the battlefield before in falls into the wrong hands. He is shocked to see Elspeth again, whom he has had a tender for since they met. Elspeth has never forgotten Tavish, but he lied to her about who he is. Elspeth loves to weave and write stories based on facts and legends. This sword peaks her interest and she finds herself with Tavish to find the sword. Feeling buried emerge, but those of a secret society are desperately seeking the sword, which puts them both in danger. Can they find the sword before the others discover its location and use it for evil deeds?

Both the hero and the heroine of this novella were fantastic, and I liked the focus on storytelling. The whole quest for a magic sword plot was a bit blah though, and I really didn’t like the Die Hard references (it’s near Christmas and John McLean has to run barefoot through broken glass to save hostages!). It was distracting and took away from the rest of the story.

This is where Travis Crow, Lord of Sttathclyde, under the name Roy Williams, first notices storyteller, Elspeth Marshall. She is totally mesmerized and instantly attracted to this swoon worthy stranger. He tells her this unique tale of the Sword of Lann Dhearg that is allegedly the identical sword given to one of King Authors knight’s of Camelot and this sword’s name was Dyrnwyn. He enchants her from that start, sweeping her off her feet quickly, as she falls for this swoon worthy man sharing a passionate kiss. They had family duties to fulfill he gave his word he would return but he never did which shattered young Elspeth’s heart. It would be another two years before she saw this man again!

Scotland
The year of Our Lord is one thousand seven hundred and forty-six In December. In the Culloden battle where his people were crushed, Tavish Crawford, has now lost his beloved families sword called Lann Dhearg. In addition to this problem his heart nearly pops out of his chest when he sees Elspeth Marshall at Balthazar’s Inn. Hoping she won’t remember him as he is now a wanted criminal to the English, a Jacobite sympathizer and rebel, a wanted man! If she says anything he might be taken into custody for execution!
Unfortunately, she does remember him and he gives her her another false name, this time John MacLean. This man denied knowing her showing no recognition, plus he behaved like she was irritating him. So Elspeth felt like an old rag-just used and worthless not worth remembering! Of course Tavish remembered her, but had to behave as an uncaring, cold and callous rogue. As it could mean the end of his life!
He does eventually find Elspeths to apologize and explains his names, how he’s a a Jacobite sympathizer, helping the other hidden surviving rebels. She forgives him, but of course this is after she punched him in the gut! Soon he explains looking for his lost sword. Not realizing both his sword and the woman who now owns his heart are in jeopardy from a secret and dangerous organization also seeking his sword! As this secret organization wants his sword believing it is the thirteenth treasure. His other problem is Elspeth the story teller and writer wants to tell his families history to the world. Something he wants kept private no matter what but he also knows Elspeth life would be forfeit if this organization discovered Elspeth’s story, as this sword could be very dangerous in the wrong hands. To Elspeth so much of this feels like a sting of Tavish’s betrayal more than once he hasn’t been honest with her. Can she ever trust him and give her heart again? Will he ever be to convince the woman he loves he only wants to protect her? Read and find out more in this wonderful story.
My first Darcy Burke read that I really enjoyed.This is a prequel to her book Legendary Rogues series.
It is is filled with adventure, folklore, magic, danger, mystery and love. A book I highly recommend. I originally read this in the analogy A Very Highland Holiday.

The year of Our Lord is one thousand seven hundred and forty-four, in the summer season at the Lammas Fair. This is where Travis Crow, Lord of Sttathclyde, under the name Roy Williams, first notices storyteller, Elspeth Marshall. She is totally mesmerized and instantly attracted to this swoon worthy stranger. He tells her this unique tale of the Sword of Lann Dhearg that is allegedly the identical sword given to one of King Authors knight’s of Camelot and this sword’s name was Dyrnwyn. He enchants her from that start, sweeping her off her feet quickly, as she falls for this swoon worthy man sharing a passionate kiss. They had family duties to fulfill he gave his word he would return but he never did which shattered young Elspeth’s heart. It would be another two years before she saw this man again!

The year of Our Lord is one thousand seven hundred and forty-six In December. In the Culloden battle where his people were crushed, Tavish Crawford, has now lost his beloved families sword called Lann Dhearg. In addition to this problem his heart nearly pops out of his chest when he sees Elspeth Marshall at Balthazar’s Inn. Hoping she won’t remember him as he is now a wanted criminal to the English, a Jacobite sympathizer and rebel, a wanted man! If she says anything he might be taken into custody for execution!
Unfortunately, she does remember him and he gives her her another false name, this time John MacLean. This man denied knowing her showing no recognition, plus he behaved like she was irritating him. So Elspeth felt like an old rag-just used and worthless not worth remembering! Of course Tavish remembered her, but had to behave as an uncaring, cold and callous rogue. As it could mean the end of his life!
He does eventually find Elspeths to apologize and explains his names, how he’s a a Jacobite sympathizer, helping the other hidden surviving rebels. She forgives him, but of course this is after she punched him in the gut! Soon he explains looking for his lost sword. Not realizing both his sword and the woman who now owns his heart are in jeopardy from a secret and dangerous organization also seeking his sword! As this secret organization wants his sword believing it is the thirteenth treasure. His other problem is Elspeth the story teller and writer wants to tell his families history to the world. Something he wants kept private no matter what but he also knows Elspeth life would be forfeit if this organization discovered Elspeth’s story, as this sword could be very dangerous in the wrong hands. To Elspeth so much of this feels like a sting of Tavish’s betrayal more than once he hasn’t been honest with her. Can she ever trust him and give her heart again? Will he ever be to convince the woman he loves he only wants to protect her? Read and find out more in this wonderful story.
My first Darcy Burke read that I really enjoyed.This is a prequel to her book Legendary Rogues series.
It is is filled with adventure, folklore, magic, danger, mystery and love. A book I highly recommend. I originally read this in the analogy A Very Highland Holiday.

This book was so entertaining & I loved learning about the legend of the family's magical sword, Lann Dhearg, & the quest to locate it. Tavish Crawford, Lord Strathclyde, aka John MacLean aka Roy Williams is now searching for his family's sword & while on his way to another clue to the sword's whereabouts, he stops in a village & listens to a gifted storyteller, Elspeth Marshall. He introduces himself as Roy Williams & Elspeth is not only beautiful but is a recorder of legends & particularly the 13 Legends of Britain. He tells her some additional details about the legend of Lann Dhearg & she is fascinated with the story & with him - the instant attraction happens for both of them & he promises to come back to the village for her as soon as he travels to the next clue in his search. Well two years pass & when her & her aunt are forced to take shelter at an inn because of a snowstorm; she overhears men talking about Lann Dhearg. When English soldiers start hassling the men's sword conversation a man named, John MacLean, intervenes. Elspeth knows this man - Roy Williams not John MacLean & confronts him in front of the English soldiers - he denies being Roy Williams, Elspeth leave, he settles things with the soldiers & goes to try & explain things to Elspeth. After telling his story to Elspeth, he agrees to let her help with the search & record the legend, but they are not the only ones looking for the sword - the Order of the Round Table wrongly believing it to be one of the Thirteen Treasures of Britain. Roy/John/Tavish & Elspeth will have to delay the strong feelings they have for one another until they can recover Lann Dhearg & find a way to overcome the Order.
I highly recommend this well written book - if you have read the series, you will still enjoy this novella & if you haven't started the series, the action, danger, legends & romance will entice you to start reading Book 1 Lady of Desire. Elspeth is looking after a new tale to narrate, also after something new. Until she stumbles against the very man who has shaken her world two years ago, and never left her thought since.
A quick and fast paced read.

What an exciting story. The legend of a mysterious powerful sword is a myth most believe. Except for Tavish. As you read the book you will know why. He met Elspeth in her hometown telling stories of local legends. When the story of a mystical sword was brought up, he added to the story few knew about. It had been a secret for hundreds of years. Of course, Elspeth was a person who documents all folklore. She was extremely interested in Tavish's story. The attraction between them was unmistakable. Two year later when Elspeth and her Aunt were traveling and had to stop at an inn because of the weather she saw Tavish and was hurt and angry. She almost blew his cover as he was incognito under an assumed name helping those Jacobites that fought at Culloden. Later he was able to explain to Elspeth why he did not return to see her. He fought at Culloden and now was helping heal and smuggling men and their families to America. She forgave him after he kissed her and made her knees weak. The problems did not stop there. Some of the men in the bar were talking about a magical sword at the Culloden fight. But no one knew who wielded it or owned it. But it was missing and Tavish kept it to himself that he was looking for it. But Elspeth who documented folklore was drawn to the story and was bound and determined to get it. Trouble followed, hostages taken, bad men killed and though there were injuries all was safe. An exciting story like that of Merlin's sword meant for King Arthur.
