"Spark" is a quirky tale about a girl who starts to spark. Literally. Brief spurts of light emanate from her unpredictably. She had enough trouble making friends in the first place and Spark’s sparks just make matters worse. Little does she know that being accepted by the kids at school is the least of her problems as her light is very special and hunted by a force she could never have imagined.

Written in a "mash up" style, it combines traditional story elements with a screenplay format.

It's for 8 to 12 year olds, the young at heart, and for all those who have ever been afraid to be who they really are, for all those who have ever been afraid to let their light shine.

Spark is a wonderfully written book that is written as a manuscript. As a teacher, the potential for studying this book with a middle - school class kept jumping in to my mind as I read it. The history the book is based on, contrast between light and dark, origins of expressions relating to light. how we treat those that are different, how people deal with adversity and many more ideas. The way the book is written allows for scenes to be acted out and interpreted : links with art, writing, oracy, social studies, history, are endless. I would highly recommend this book to those in Grade 6-9 and their teachers!!!
