When her niece goes missing, Sheriff Kate Fox dives into a lethal investigation that unearths long-buried secrets—and a secret society desperate to keep them hidden…
Sheriff Kate Fox is wrangling her personal and professional life into order while still searching for her niece, who slipped her halter and took off almost two years ago. But when her ex-husband’s wife, Roxy, drops their infant on Kate’s doorstep and disappears with no explanation, Kate’s world is turned upside down.
Her search for Roxy takes her to a remote cabin in the Wyoming mountains and Kate discovers a fresh trail for her niece. Her instinct tells her the two women’s disappearances are related and may be connected to a mysterious society whose members are playing a dangerous game.
As Kate races to save the women, she turns to friends and family to help—but the society’s reach stretches far, and its most dangerous members are closer than she thinks…
Shannon Baker writes mysteries about strong women in dangerous situations. Her books are set in the iconic landscapes of the American West, from the Colorado Rockies to the Nebraska prairies, to the deserts of southern Arizona. Baker spent 20 years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1, and too few years living on Colorado’s front range. Her dark suspense, The Desert Behind Me, is a 2019 Winner of the New Mexico/Arizona Book Award. Seconds before quitting writing forever and taking up competitive drinking, Shannon was voted Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer’s 2014 Writer of the Year and, buoyed with that confidence, continued to write, earning another RMFW Writer of the Year nod in 2017-18. Shannon makes her home in Tucson where she enjoys cocktails by the pool, breathtaking sunsets, a crazy Weimaraner, and killing people (in the pages of her books).
A lover of the outdoors, she can be found backpacking in the Rockies, traipsing to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, skiing mountains and plains, kayaking lakes, river running, hiking, cycling, and scuba diving whenever she gets the chance. Arizona sunsets notwithstanding, Baker is, and always will be, a Nebraska Husker, heartbreaking as the last two decades have been. Go Big Red.
Wow. This is the best book of the series. This one was funny, witty, fast paced, and shocking. I don't want to say too much because it would definitely be spoiling things. I loved it. I can not wait for the next book. Highly recommend this series!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author,, and Severn River Publishing for the ARC!
This fifth installment in the Kate Fox series continues the storyline from previous books, making it best to read the series from the beginning. I have enjoyed this series but I was disappointed with this installment. There really wasn’t much action until about 70% into the book. Kate has become a doormat and allows herself to be taken advantage of, runs into situations without thought and I really was disappointed with how she treated Baxter. I’m not ready to give up on the series but I would really like to see Kate mature.
Why did Kate's ex-husband Ted's, wife, Roxy, leave their three-week-old son with her? Kate has other things to do besides babysit someone's child she isn't married to or likes anymore. Then there is Carla. Kate is sure she has been back in town but trying to find her has been a total bust. Then Kate remembers something that just might help her find Carla. What she does find isn't what she was expecting! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Kate Fox is a great character dealing with crime, her crazy family, a dog she didn’t want, an ex-husband and his totally irritating new wife. Highly recommend this series.
Kate ends up babysitting Ted and Roxy’s newborn. Not by choice. Carly is back in the area and Kate is on the trail. It wraps up at the end with a twist.
And it is one of the most disappointing books I’ve read.
This book has been mis marketed as a suspense book.
It’s not much better than the Harlequin books my grandmother used to read.
Lots of fluff, and little action. There’s maybe 15% that actually deals with the ongoing storyline. It’s all about Kate, and her feelings.
This should have been marketed as a romance book or even a chick lit.
I would have been much more lenient in my opinions of it, as I would not have had the expectations that I’d be reading a suspense book as the rest of the series has been.
I really struggled to finish this one, but kept hoping it would turn out to be the quality of the other books in this series.
While I will say it had a satisfactory ending.
I’ve pretty much lost all respect for Kate Fox as an individual.
The first ½ of the book deals with Kate’s former husband and his “Trophy” wife's not being able to deal with being new parents.
The second ½ actually is a better read as far as the story goes.
Kate finally finds Carly after an 18 month search, But, it also shows that Kate is no more faithful in a relationship than Ted was to her.
The final 6 – 7 chapters is solely responsible for the 3 star rating.
Before that it was much lower. And I was on the verge of quitting the story.
In Shannon Baker’s Broken Ties, the 5th installment in the Kate Fox mystery series, this mystery keeps you in suspense from the first page to the last. It all started for Kate Fox, a sheriff in Sandhills Nebraska, when she covered for her ex-husband, Ted Conner, who’s a sheriff at another county, when he takes off to go on a fishing retreat. While she dealt with family issues at the heart, Roxy Conner, her ex’s new wife, had dropped off her baby boy at her home, she had disappeared and taken off to parts unknown, and couldn’t deal with being a mother. It’s up to Kate to find her, and to locate her missing niece Carly, who she haven’t seen in over a year. Every clue leads her to her late sister’s cabin in Wyoming when she reunited with Glenn Baxter, a family fiend and private detective. But when she discovered what’s been going on lately, it brought her closer to danger and the possible truth on why her niece ran away and into hiding. It landed right on her own doorstep with the shocking realization that left aftershocks in her family.
This stunning mystery would keep you at the edge of your seat. It would leave you hooked and keeps you guessing. I cared for Kate who wanted to search for the truth and the answers for those lingering burning questions that were linked to the past. I loved how she remained devoted to Poupon, the family dog, and temporarily cared for Beau. I also loved how Poupon looked after Beau—sweet tender moments. The dual locations of Wyoming and the Sandhills district were mesmerizing and transported you there on the pages. The themes of the story is okay to let go of the past and to move on from there.
This intriguing mystery will give you goosebumps and chills. I had no issues with this book. I rated this book, four out of five stars for no reason. If you love gritty mysteries with non-stop action, plenty of dramatic suspense, and lots of twisted turns, Broken Ties is the book for you. This book is recommended for those who love mysteries set in midwestern states and suspense novels.
I loved this book from start to end for many reasons: Shannon Baker knows how to bring You into a scene! You walk alongmany side every character, whether irritating or sweet, there are personalities aplenty in this book, each a part of the whole. Broken Ties has a lots of intrigue and mystery as Kate tries to find Her niece Carly, who disappears after Her Grandfathers murder, it's the last straw that breaks Her, after Her Father dies under suspicious circumstances. Life goes on with the Fox Family and Kate does Her best to juggle it all. Kate has the gumption to leave Her traitorous Husband, becomes a Sheriff, first out of necessity and later, is quite perceptive, solving the mysteries that crop up. Kate finds joy in living alone for the first time and Writer Shannon Baker has an absolute gift in describing the scenery and the world where Kate lives and works. The smells of the forest, the sunlight peeking over the mountains, the crunch of feet on glorious fall leaves, Her face warmed in the morning sunlight. It's really beautiful writing, especially at the beginning of each chapter. Personification at it's finest and all readers will love this. There's love in Kate's large family, but I wish Just Once I would hear Kate say: Shut up! to her Sisters Louise and Diane. Kates internal dialog rationalizing their bitching, which at times grows quite cruel, shows a vulnerable side of Kate, but also makes a reader beg Kate to speak up for herself just once and not back down. It's a bit distracting...Maybe they'll grow more empathy as these stories continue. But all in all, I highly recommend this Book and can't wait to start Book 6!!
Broken Ties is the 5th installment in the Sheriff Kate Fox mystery series. Her ex-husband, Ted Conner, who is sheriff of a neighboring county, asks her to cover for him when he takes an impromptu fishing trip. When his new wife, Roxy, drops their infant on Kate’s doorstep and disappears with no explanation, Kate is angry and begins a search for one or both of them.
For over a year, Kate has been searching for her missing niece, Carly, who has been doing her own investigation into her father's suspicious death. "Broken Ties" concludes that story arc and this book relies heavily on the previous storylines to fully understand the plot.
There's not a lot of actual crime in this mystery. A lot of it involves he search for Roxy as she drags the baby and her apricot standard poodle, Poupon, along with her. I always love Kate's interaction with her large family and I especially liked Poupon's relationship with baby, Beau.
I recommend this series but a new reader should not start with this book. I just think there were too many previous plot threads to make it enjoyable. If you are already a fan of the Kate Fox series, this is one you don't want to miss.
I have read all of the Kate Fox books in this series, and to be honest, this was my least favorite. I must say at this point, as others have pointed out, the books in this series really need to be read in order to make sense of everything going on and keep up with the number of characters included in each book. Even having done that myself, I found my head spinning at times, as I tried to keep track of everyone. Don’t get me wrong, I think Ms. Baker is a very talented author, and usually I get so wrapped up in her stories that I can’t put them down. This particular book was no different in that regard. However, our main character Kate, who is a sheriff, didn’t seem quite so competent in this installment, and seemed to only solve the mysteries happening all around her by sheer luck. And unlike the previous books, where I ended each one pretty satisfied with the way things were wrapped up, I absolutely HATED the way this one ended. That will probably not stop me from giving the next book a try though, if there is a next book. I received a copy of this book from SRP Mystery and Thriller Books, and have given my voluntary and honest opinion.
Are you a Kate Fox fan? Have you read the first four stories in this series? If your answer is yes, grab a copy and get ready for Shannon Baker to keep you spellbound for the evening. If you are new to Shannon Baker’s Kate Fox series, do yourself a favor, read the earlier stories prior to Broken Ties so that you have the back story on Kate, her family and the goings on in the Sand Hills of Nebraska. Throughout the previous for stories there were several unresolved story lines that finally come together in Broken Ties, however if you think everything is tied up neatly with a bow, think again while you will have some answers this story left me with some new unanswered questions that I hope are explored in this series going forward. This series just keeps getting better, hopefully book 6 is right around the corner. I received an Advance Reader copy and chose to provide my review.
This series keeps getting better...but the ending broke my heart. No spoilers.
When Kate's sister needs a ride to a wedding, Kate sees bracelets that have been made for her sister and the bride. She just knows that they were made by her missing niece Carly.
Kate's ex, the sheriff in a neighboring county asks her to cover his county while he goes on a fishing trip. The next day her exes current wife, Roxi, who is struggling with having a new baby, drops the baby off at Kate's and takes off. When Roxi doesn't come back the next day, Kate goes looking for her.
All of this gets entangled with the search for Carly, Kate's other family and the mystery behind Kate's brothers death. It's satisfying to find out what has been going on the past few books but once again, the ending made me sad. Very curious to see where it all goes next!
I possess the uncanny knack of choosing books that are in a series and beginning to read the most recent books. I’ve done it again with this one. I loved the setting of Nebraska and Wyoming. However this book beat me up. I was bashed from side to side trying to figure out where the heck this story was going. I was left sputtering and cussing with many of the characters, especially Kate. What kind of sheriff goes careening off without her gun? I also didn’t like how she acted with Baxter. Roxie and Ted really kept me pissed off and I don’t like either one. I’ll have to read a couple of the earlier books to discern if this series is worth sticking with. Thanks to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for the early read.
Thank you Netgalley and Severn River Publishing for this arc! This book was not for me! So much unneeded description for everything made the book drag. I skimmed so much description it made for a fast read. There were so many relationships this might be the middle of a series and I didn't know that when I requested the book. The story was okay, but the ending was not great for me because there was no build up and no hints about what other people were investigating. People who love to read lots of description and have read previous books in this series will probably love this book. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
Thank you to Severn River Publishing for an ARC of this book. The following are my own thoughts.
Broken Ties is the fifth installment in the Kate Fox series. I would not recommend reading this without having read the previous books in the series.
Kate is left with her ex-husband's new baby when his wife, Roxy, disappears. In addition to trying to locate Roxy, Kate is also looking for her missing niece, Carly. This book gives us answers to some of the storylines left dangling in the previous books. There was not alot of action and it lagged in places. I found myself skimming through pages. I was disappointed in this installment.
Brocken Ties is book #5 in the Kate Fox series. I have loved all of the books in this series and this one did not disappoint! Kate is the County Sheriff, she got voted in as Sheriff and her cheating Husband Ted was booted out of office. Ted and Roxie have had a baby. Roxy goes missing after leaving the baby in Kate’s front porch. Kate does what she always does and demands answers and will not stop until she gets them. As Kate ventures out to find Roxy she learns more about her Niece that ran away over a year ago.
This is a fast paced thriller that will keep you reading to find out what happens!
This was a cruel punishment. Leaving your child with your ex so you can get your scrupples together. There better be a good reason why they stole her truck and left the baby. Otherwise, there is gonna be some cutting off family or not. This book actually hurt my heart in the end. You have a love interest that you actively want to pursue who breaks your heart. The loss of two family members, regardless of the situation. I am kind of curious how those familiar ties will be mended or if they ever would be or will the major person that this affects cause a crater size crack in the family. Will this be the straw that breaks the camel's back where she finally finds the NO button.

I like Kate, I really do, but she really needs to get her act together. She needs to become more serious about her job. I thought she was...but...She is acting more like an amateur sleuth. She gets ideas into her head and just runs with them. The ideas may be good but she needs to be the sheriff with the good ideas. Never being prepared...not taking her gun with her. What is wrong with her brain? She needs to take these ideas...use her instincts...run those around in her head...be prepared and then do the foot work. As the saying goes....she runs off half cocked. I'm hoping she improves immensely because she is frustrating me.
Kate Fox, truly one of my favourite sheriffs, finds herself again in a race to solve a puzzle. Her ex, also a sheriff, asks her to keep an eye on his turf as he takes a break from his new wife (Roxy) and their couple of week-old son, the next morning Roxy leaves the baby on Kate’s steps to take care of while Roxy takes a break too …. As Kate searches for Roxy to bring her the baby, it triggers events that might solve her to find her niece that has been missing. Fast pace, on the edge of your seat, and things happen that you didn’t expect!
Sheriff Kate Fox has the skills needed to protect the citizens of her county but when her ex-husband and his wife, Roxy, leave their colicky infant son on Kate’s doorstep and leave town she is ready to panic. That is just the start of her problems. She can’t just take an infant with her on Sheriff calls and now Roxy is missing.
This crime novel had me engrossed from the first page. There is plenty of suspense and danger, and the way Shannon Baker incorporated humor brings the human element to make it more relatable. I finished it in one sitting.
Another fabulous book in Kate Fox series. You get the conclusion to where and what Carly has been up to. I love Kate but I wish she wasn't a doormat to Ted & Roxy. Hopefully in the next book she is over letting them walk all over her. This book has everything you would expect from a Kate Fox series; drama, suspense and a shocking conclusion. I really hope Glen can get past his issues with Kate. I'm sad to think their friendship is over. I can't wait for the next book. If you haven't read this series, I highly recommend you start.
I cannot explain why I look forward to the next book in the Kate Fox series, she drives me crazy. Near the end I found myself screaming at her for being so dumb. I listened to the audiobook and like the narrator; I think this helps me sometimes overcome the valleys of the story. I would like to keep a running count of how many similes Kate uses in her thoughts. She infuriates me yet I want to see how her story progresses, Shannon Baker has got me hooked, like a prize winning bass on a line. (yea, not the simile writer she is)
Kate and Ted are both county sheriff's in NB, they were once married and now Ted is married to Roxy and she has just delivered a baby boy Beau. Kate and Ted are out on a call and Ted confides to Kate that he needs to get away and have some time for himself, Roxy is depressed, Beau is a fussy baby and he just can't take anymore. The next day, Roxy arrives at Kate's house with Beau and tells her needs break and is leaving Beau. Meantime, Kate's niece Carly is missing and needs to be found. Why had Carly disappeared? We find out in this action packed mystery with many other players and a murder that happened many years ago into play.
Sheriff Kate’s ex-husband’s new wife disappears after abandoning her newborn on Kate’s porch. Unable to care for the child while on duty, Kate sets out to find the infant’s mother. Her search unveils secrets, evil and incredible danger. This wonderfully complex tale has many plot twists and kept me guessing until the very end. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
Another gripping well written thriller which is a page turner. Kate has her hands full as a baby sitter and a sheriff but manages both with aplomb! Some relationships are deceptive and Kate finds out the hard way that some people in her family have dark secrets. I like the cover of the book and the cast of characters in addition to the intriguing twists in the story line.
It is sweet that Kate gets stuck with the care of a newborn. It is bitter that this baby is her ex-husband's child from the woman he had an adulterous affair. And it is bitter that the baby has colic, but sweet that a furry canine can comfort him. There are so many bitter sweet moments in this story and they all create conflict and drama. It really drew me in; couldn't put it down.
Each book gets better in this series. This was my favorite so far, and no murders this time. But the chemistry between Kate and Glen Baxter finally comes to a head and they declare their feelings for each other. Along the way, Ted and Roxie both are having crisis after the birth of their son Bo. Each feels they need time away for being new parents. and Kate finds herself as the temporary baby sitter. She also discovers her niece Carly is close by and in danger.
3.5 stars! This book took some time to get into the action and there were some times when I felt like maybe the author was trying to up the word count by over explaining. As another reviewer mentioned, I would also like to see Kate growing in her ability to stop, think and plan before rushing headlong into situations that could be easily less disastrous or possibly more interesting with a bit of forethought. But, the last 30% of the book was a real nail bitter and really held my interest!
Missing niece that made bracelets, are now being worn at a wedding. Her ex goes fishing, a break from new baby crying and colic His new wife drops the baby off at Kate’s, now missing. As she looks for her, is it involved with her niece missing also A lot of twists, in this family drama, in a good series. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
