Irritating characters (Abby is a whiner and making scenes all the time), boring storyline, undeveloped romance, trust issues, and syrupy romance (Paris and a Bentley and a yacht and rose petals… oh, come on…). Not my thing.
We always have to be careful when we make a wish. Abby Ryan was so pathetic about her boyfriend who broke up with her after quite a long relationship, and wished to forget him and everything she’d been through with him. As the book goes on, you learn how much she depended on him. Sadly, her wish had really happened; she was hit by falling debris when she was walking under a ladder on her way to work and has lost much of her long-term memory. Abby can't believe it's true. She feels fine. She even remembered what exactly happened the day before the accident. She didn’t fully understood how will the damage affect her daily life but the many neurologist and physiologists she spoke to tried to explain as much as they could. Her brain was damaged in the hippocampus which was the first stage of Alzheimer. Abby’s family was caring, loving and wonderfully supportive. They didn’t like how she spent all her time working after the break up. She even stopped meeting her friends or going out anymore. She didn’t care about anything. Although her sister, Caroline, never gave up on talking to and advising her, she never listened. She started to get used to the damage and going back to her normal life, but with a new Abby. She decided to live her life and do all the things she wanted to do. She did a list of to-do things. She started going out with friends and chilling again. She made her life worth living and forgot about her brain damage that would’ve made her lose her memory and life. What I liked the most in this novel was the optimism in her, the strength to never give up! I think that it’s simply telling that in our lives, we will face a lot of problems that we might think that they are the end of the world but no, it’s your life, you chose how to live it no matter how people frustrate you or let you down, you can still stand on your legs and can prove them wrong and just be happy! Love the life, and it’ll love you back.
I love Ella King’s novels. She has critical insight into human nature which enables her novels to be so impactful. I laughed and cried through this story.
Assolutamente consigliato
Abby Ryan is quite happy with life, but all that changes when she’s hit by falling debris when she’s walking under a ladder on her way to work.
When she awakes, she finds out that her memory is damaged, and that she has lost much of her long-term memory. She’s devastated, but also slightly in denial. So Abby sets about creating some new, fantastic memories with the help of her family and close friends, ones that she hopes she will be able to hold onto despite her declining health.
On her amazing adventures, Abby bumps into someone who soon becomes a close friend. But is she willing to let him into her life and let him become something more?
Melissa Hill always tries something different with her books, and explores areas that other authors in the genre probably wouldn’t go down the route of. This books explores the aftermath of someone having an accident that will change the rest of their lives, and not only them but the people surrounding that person too. However, this book is a little different from other material the author has written in that it is focussed on one character and her life unlike other books which have chosen to focus on a group of characters, linked by some event or other. In another change from the norm, there isn’t really a mystery element to this book, but still I was hooked and loved every page.
The lead character of Abby is very important, not only because she is the focus of the story, but because the audience has to like her and empathise with her, otherwise the book just wouldn’t work. However, this wasn’t a problem because of Hill’s skill with writing and creating a character that just comes to life on the pages and into the minds of her readers. Abby was just a normal girl whose life took a shocking turn, and her accident was something that could easily happen to just you or me. This made it all the more believable and consequently I found myself getting involved in the story very quickly and in Abby’s life as well. Abby’s reaction to her situation is also very believable and I could see myself reacting the same way.
The reaction of Abby’s family was also very important and played an integral part in the story. Finn was a great character who also reacted well to the whole scenario of Abby, and I instantly warmed to him. The rest of her family were also likeable, and that is why I like Melissa Hill’s book so much. They are always completely focussed on the characters as well as the storyline and it always works so seamlessly to create a wonderful story and it makes her books so readable. The progression is good and doesn’t move too quickly, instead choosing to focus on the events that Abby’s family take her on and her visits with her therapist too. Hill has clearly done her research certain things in the book, such as the medical issues that Abby faces, and also New York too as this features largely in the book too.
This isn’t my favourite book of Melissa Hill’s as it doesn’t have the major twists and turns that her other books do, but it still a great read and one her fans will definitely enjoy. She once again writes an excellent story that draws you in and keeps you hooked until the last page is turned. It doesn’t get too heavy with medical jargon, but of course there is some in there because of the nature of the story. Hill manages to make it make sense though, and its all explained so you fully understand what each of these characters are going through. Although Abby is the main character, I really did love Finn because of his support and his own little storyline as well that was quite touching. As I said, its different from some of her other stuff, but its great and a very enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it to her fans, but also to anyone who just loves a really good book.
I saw the book on Amazon and felt like it is a kinda book I should not miss and while reading the book I Sometimes saw me on Abby. The way she fought and moved on in life gave me kinda..positivity and Smile on My Face.. Finn..Lucy.. All the characters are now so close to my Heart that I feel All of them live somewhere around me and even If I have completed the book.. I have a feeling that I will meet them tomorrow for sure.
The Best part is.. I donno If I am revealing too much..about things in the story ..but I should say this..
I always wished " I could create a scrap book " ..with the trips ..the things and the Incidents I never wanted to forget..like Abby did.. But then I always thought..Oh yea..I can easily remember it out whenever I want..!! But this book..It compelled me to start making my book and yea.. I am already working on it. coz Now I know anything can happen any time and Even if something happen to me I don't want me to forget the ones I never want to..!! What one Memory will you hold on to ?? I have asked that question to myself and I always Got confused with a lot of things rushing to me..
Now I Have book and even though I wish I should never have to depend on it for moving on in life.. Abby is kinda ...role model for me now.. :)
You know I love Melissa Hill mainly because you always feel good after you finish one of her books. This story was the same. Its starts off Abby is devastated because her long term boyfriend Kieran has dumped her. Her friend Erin tries to get her to go on holiday with her and another friend to Dubai for some girly time but Abby doesn't want to, she is too busy wallowing and now really late for work. As she is rushing out the door for work, she walks under a ladder and is hit on the head by a slate falling off a roof giving Abby a severe head injury and her memory is affected.
I really liked the is story. It was a bit of a feel good everything works out in the end which I know Melissa Hill is about. That's why I love them. Its nice to read about someone having a hard time with life, they get a second chance and everything goes well for them. It'd be nice if life was like that too!
I love Melissa Hills writing, it simplistic but at the same time any book I've read by her is a page turner that keeps you going till the very end. I love her characters and the fact her stories center around Dublin I love just as much.
What something that will keep you engrossed till the very end? What a chick/lit feel good story with a few twists and turn then I thoroughly recommend this one!
I really had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars. Here's why: the story is unique, intriguing, and told from the first person perspective of a lost mind. The characters, hidden truths, and the deep emotional connections grab you. My only frustration, besides typos, was the excessive description on certain topics. I actually began skimming those chapters or taking a reading break. This over "discriptoral" caused the book to slow immediately after an interesting start. But the story kept bringing me back. Edit some of that and fix the typos and this is a refreshing 5 stars with one of the sweetest love stories and perfect endings. Do I recommend it?... Yes, it will blow your mind and squeeze your heart... But skim some of the travelogs.
"A Wonderful Life" bu Melissa Hill is my first read from this author and I really enjoyed this book. There are many aspects and parts of this story that I liked, and without giving the story away it is hard to say what kept me glued to this story. Abby woke up in the hospital after being hit on the head, and she found out that a part of her brain which contained memories was damaged. She meets Finn and they spend a wonderful day together in NYC but when they meet up again she doesn't remember their encounter. This book takes you through the highs and lows of Abby's illness.
The entirety of this book irritated me, I think. The characters weren't really likeable, any of them really, and the main character spent most of her time whining, or being too miserable for me to even care about. I understand she was having a tough time, but it made me not care for her at all. The twist near the end also through me off, and confused me a little, and not in a good way, and really, I didn't think it was necessary.
Another wonderful Christmas read for the holidays. A Magical Christmas Read for 2019. Penny visits her best friend Kate in New Yo90rk. She runs into a guy named Mike who had asked her out before. Mike did not know she had lost her hubby at the time. Mike decides to show Penny around New York. Love it.
There's so many stories about memory loss, but this one is very unique. Every plot twist is page turner. Especially the super romantic ending. This is (yet) the best Melissa Hill book I ever read (so far). Cannot wait to read her other books.
At first I thought oh I don't think I want to read about memory loss as I'm sole carer for my husband. Oh my goodness it kept me riveted to the very last page.
A book that takes me to 4 places - New York, Italy, Paris & Dublin. It's as though I was in the story as well....the shopping, food, atmosphere....just beautiful. And interesting characters - Abby, Finn, Caroline (the shopaholic and caring sister), Claire & Erin. Well, it was a good thing that Kieran dumped Abby, if not, things will not change for her. And the accident that knocked her out really changes everything.....especially her perspective of life. And not forgetting the beautiful love story between Abby and Finn. I love Melissa Hill's books! Very entertaining.
An amazing storyline, I gotta say. But was it addicting or exciting? No not really.
It had little to no romance and it was just so not it.
He had such fleeting presence and almost nonexistent.
She on the other hand was such a bad character, like with such bad qualities. And literally no development.
He was a sweetheart don’t get me wrong but her on the other hand no. I wouldn’t want to be in a relationship with someone like her and bc I tend to put myself in the characters place, it was really unsatisfying.
