2.5 (rounded up)
this manhua, weirdly, is ultimately about deciding not to live as a clinically depressed recluse. LMAO i’m not joking.

i don’t even know where to begin.

the romance: problematic in origin! at the beginning of the story, you learn that the love interest was once a child ye zhu took care of, “adopted”………
😶
that is the weirdest-possible dynamic. no, seriously. that is the most off-putting dynamic. 😭 at no point in anyone’s life should they ever look at a former caregiver, a parental figure, in a ROMANTIC light???, omfg.
so i felt 0% connection to ye zhu and “qiqi” as a couple, or even to the IDEA of them as a couple. it wasn’t so uncomfortable that i stopped reading, but it’s just a weird premise that actually doesn’t have much to do with the story??
like, if you take that out, it changes nothing about the story, other than the fact they wouldn’t know each other.
it’s just weird because they don’t really spend any time getting to know each other as two adults, developing feelings. that implies ye zhu (who’s hundreds of years old) easily converted old caregiver feelings into romantic ones, which… 🤢
again, it’s just an unnecessarily WEIRD dynamic. i cannot understand it. it’s not even the first bl i’ve seen implement it. 🙃
this could have easily been a supernatural/fantasy romance that started in the workplace with a new strange supervisor? i promise the whole “18 years ago, you were a child i adopted” plot point did not need to exist. 😭
if you can get past the bizarre setup for the romance—

the characters:

ye zhu - perpetually suffering, i feel him!
and why do immortal beings always have jobs, like… why are you 168 years old working as an entry level office employee 🫠🫠 lol. like.. why did u not accumulate an immense wealth throughout your time alive so you’d never have to work again?
(still not as creepy as the cullens continuing to go to high school though) (like why did you as a man experience the 1918 influenza and somehow find it okay to be sitting in my 11th grade biology class rn be serious)

also, i genuinely didn’t know he wanted to die???? LMAO
and that ends up being kind of a major point of character development and conflict? like, his lack of will to live is apparently (?) holding him back from being a full wizard, along with his humanity (?).
“I’m a flawed person. I’m indecisive, I stumble over my words, and worst of all I don’t have a strong will to live.”
you n me both, ye zhu

ye shengqi - he was cooler when he was being a little cold and distant to ye zhu, ngl.
i feel like he kind of had no personality apart from loving ye zhu, which is weird because why would you be in love with a strange man who “adopted” you as a child….
(also being raised as a girl?? a little insane?)
i don’t mind that sort of puppy-like devotion, but it’s really childish, and in this case him behaving in a childish manner to the man who used to take care of him is kinda insidious and gross. 😬

maimai - a little evil?? lol (and prone to leaving out a lot of details just for the sake of suspense.)
loved her pink hair and her weird witch cloak though, so pretty!

en wei - he deserved more! he was a cool character, i wish he’d had more screentime. that transition of him from a dragon to a human the first time, wowwww. his outfit was so pretty!
his storyline with how he met ye zhu and all was so interesting, actually. one of the most interesting parts of the whole manhua.
he didn’t even have a proper name until almost the end of the manhua, they just called him “mr. dragon.” :(
he just wanted to play on maimai’s switch 🥺, cute.

the plot: girl idk 🫠
maybe it’s due to the short length of the manhua, but towards the end it seemed like events just suddenly HAPPENED? like, with nothing leading up to them? no clues scattered throughout beforehand?
not only that, but (again, at the end) there were no real stakes? like, something would happen and it was so vague and unclear what exactly the consequences were because it seemed like maimai could continually pull them from any danger??
why care what’s happening if it’s all just a test? or not actually as dangerous as previously stated? i don’t get it. 😭
also because maimai made potions, she could just whip up anything, and boom, crisis solved.

also, when it comes to magic, there is no way a 44 chapter webcomic can begin to explain an entire magic system, so therefore there were a lot of cool magical tidbits that occured that i wish made more sense, but whatever.
i really liked the little minor demons/spirits that were always flying around ye zhu, even the evil ones!
i found it cool that witch/wizard powers are fueled by desire. they’re made up of greed. i thought that was an interesting take on a magic system, especially given that witches/wizards allegedly shun their humanity in order to become a full magical being.

there’s no smut in this, praise the lord.

the art: so so nice!
the character designs kind of reminded me of something from an otome game? lol.
i see this style of art on twitter sometimes, this particular kind of pretty fantasy style. the sparkles, the colored eyes, etc.. i like it!
the wizard / angel designs were literally SO GORGEOUS omg. and en wei’s ornate jacket!!! wow.
also really loved the fancy transitions! (one of my favorite things about webcomics is the ability to have those long, detailed transitions.)
and the chibi characters were sooooo cute. 🥹

had it not been for the art and the fixation upon finishing the story (not the story itself, just finishing it), i probably would’ve dropped this one.
but i’m interested in seeing more of the artist’s work, so i think i’m going to read a different manhua that’s both drawn and written by them (as opposed to this one which is authored by someone else).

it honestly wasn’t a terrible manhua; the relationship was just tainted by a weird trope and the plot was lackluster and sometimes-confusing. with some editing and reworking of the romance, this could’ve been really great.
also i read a lot of korean-to-english stuff, so it’s nice to switch it up sometimes!

i don’t even know why i wrote a longer review for a random, unpopular manhua, but i wish i could find more supernatural/paranormal bls i like!

(现代魔男狩猎计划)

A cute little BL manga! It's pretty much what you expect from a manga about a witch boy and his angel admirer, but it was a fun quick read and the characters are all well done.

The main couple was interesting, and both of them have nice character arcs, but honestly I think the strong suit of this manga is actually the side characters. I...have no idea what Maimai's impetus was supposed to be but she was hilarious. Also the dragon familiar is basically the best.

If I have one real criticism, it's that the ending feels a bit rushed. It was pretty obvious from the beginning that this wasn't supposed to be a tragedy manga (even if it does touch on some emotional trauma), but things just resolve a little too cleanly at the end. I don't know much about the background workings of the industry, but it does feel like the author was maybe pressured (or wanted to move on) to end the manga all of a sudden.

Otherwise, it's just a nice fun little manga with a serviceable plot, some solid character development, and some fabulous side characters.

Nie... No to było słabe. Po prostu słabe. Fabuła średnia, bohaterowie tacy sobie, a przede wszystkim przeszkadzał taki... totalny chaos. Wydarzenia nakładały się na siebie, nie było takiej liniowej fabuły, sam zamysł jest mega średni i... niesmaczny?

Cute but too simple. It's a story easy to consume because the plot isn't hard to tell which makes it non stimulating as there's nothing to figure out. Good length for what it is.
