After the chaos and destruction that ended the player faction war in Illusion, Kitty has to deal with the ramifications of her actions in the real world when the US Senate Security council subpoenas her for the destruction of her lab at MiT. Simultaneously, BlackLight arrives to offer her a beta pass to their new game, a super-natural western with extreme immersion that isn’t what it seems. When the hearing goes bad, and Kitty is forced to flee, BlackLight coerces her into playing what is rapidly devolving into a brutal, bizarre game. Facing outlaws, wild animals, stubborn tow-folk, cannibals, and supernatural creatures, Kitty has to lead a town of innocent civilians through the end of their world, with only her wits and friends to help her survive. As dangerous enemies grow more powerful both in the game and in real life, Kitty must evade the US navy on her way to independent city state of Hong Kong and figure out how to deal with BlackLight breathing down her neck.
Delusion is full of action at every turn and is a page-turner for anyone who likes fantasy, LitRPG, science fiction and even supernatural. The main character, Kitty, is a smart, gritty, strong and brave female character. The book goes back and forth between Kitty's real-life issues while she tries to evade the US Navy and escape to Hong Kong, and her 'western world' game where she immerses herself on an incredible adventure & leads the charge, battling good ol' typical wild-west posse gangs, monsters and more. The writing was detailed and I felt fully immersed in both of Kitty's worlds and invested in each, looking forward to finding out what's going to happen to all the great characters. The character of Kitty kind of reminded me of Stephanie Plum in Janet Evanovich books because she's smart, sassy, funny and her life is full of adventures - and she's a PhD!
When I first started this sequel, I knew I was going to enjoy it. A lot of the same things are true about this book, but when I tell you it HITS DIFFERENT. I mean, it hits different, okay? Let me explain.
Phelps has this intricate style of writing about him. His descriptions are rich and vivid; his action scenes are clear and easy to follow. While he does tend to be long-winded with his book (this one was 433 pages according to amazon, which I know it shooting low), there's not really a second of wasted time. I love the raw talent that Joseph portrays in the stories that he tells. While it'll take some time to read these books, you'll be absolutely absorbed. This book gave me multiple goosebump moments. Books don't often do that for me! It's those moments that I live for, the ones that make me put the book down, say "woah" out loud, and tear up just a little bit.
Joseph Phelps is a master in LitRPG. I've read more GameLit than ever before since I started reviewing books, and I'm coming to really like this particular genre. What I enjoy is that there are two stories. You follow Kitty's real life adventures escaping the US Navy, and then you follow Kit's game life as she explores this horrible wild west with its monsters and cannibals and killer snakes. And this book is different in that Kit starts to forget what's real and what's a game. That was an interesting added touch.
I have no complaints about the way the plots (both real and game!) unfolded. I didn't even graze over all the specs for items, lol. It was well paced, kept my attention, and honestly, to sum it up, a breathtaking read. Well done, Joseph.
In the near future, Dr Catherine Hardage aka Kitty is trying very hard to create an anti-matter power source to take humanity to the next level. Unfortunately, her bold efforts take a dark turn when her lab blows up and she is bound to pay the price.
Kitty has another side. She is super gamer and agrees to test a game call Deadeye which is based in the Western outback. Full of monsters, shooters, snakes and alligators the game is unpredictable and exciting. Most of all it is an outlet for her from the real world and also a way to cope with her current problems. But the game is not what it seems and there are really dark turns and horrors that await her.
But Kitty is no angel. She is smart, cunning, unpredictable, ruthless and a badass. Most of all she knows what she wants and how to get it. She plays the game in both worlds cleverly and her character left me wondering till the end. Is she really the hero or the villain. The duality of her and other characters is very interesting, and kept me guessing what will happen next. The two worlds have been described brilliantly, and I felt as if I was a part of them. Overall, the storyline excellent, although I felt the book was a bit long for me and the story dragged towards the end.
In comparison to the first part, the book 2 is a gripping, imaginative tale which will keep you guessing till the last page!
A thrilling and action packed litRPG that leaves the reader wanting more. We follow kitty on her trialing journey through the reaches of the wild west in her game life and in real life a daring escape from those that wish to bring her down. I have to say the author has done a brilliant job in creating this world, with its mirage of animals and characters. It also has some elements of magic in the form of the supernatural which was exciting and very refreshing to see. Overall can't wait to see what happens next. And if you enjoy daring westerns that break all the rules or litRPG this book is for you!
The feeling I had reading Delusion was a Quentin Tarantino movie, where there is gore and guns and guts in the background and the slow motion of something else, like Kit picking up herbs in the foreground. I thought nothing could shake her, as she grew extra limbs and wasn’t phased by it until she teared up after she lost her “people.” Beautiful writing, imaginative plot, painfully slow at times, glad it didn’t end in a cliffhanger. I enjoyed the emotional and sensitive side of this story despite being violent at times. I read Delusion for a book club I am part of.
Absolutely loved it. Action, quests, monsters, crazed animals, six shooters, and a big ol lovable cannibal. And that's just in the game world. It's action packed in the real world as well as scifi battles erupt in Kit's escape from conundrum after conundrum. Brilliantly done.
Lit RPG is on of my favourite genres. Having read Illusion I was excited to get my hands on Delusion and it certainly didn't disappoint. It was a brilliant read, packed with action, danger, and confusion. I loved the dual plot lines between in game and out and felt it was beautifully transitioned. I am quickly becoming a fan of this author, his work really is top notch.
