Life is what you make it and nothing more. This is something I had to come to terms with as I struggled to find my place in this world.
I was born with a learning disability and no one could understand me but my older brother until I was almost eight years old. I was told my multiple teachers and school councilors that I was not going to graduate high school unless I went into a special program. In 2001 I proved them all wrong by graduating with a 3.5 and being accepted into Cal State University, Pomona.
Following the bad advice of my councilor I majored in animal science and after two years I had to drop out. For a while I wondered aimlessly and became homeless before I decided to give school one more try. Enrolling at Fullerton College I picked journalism to major in, why not I loved to read and write. In 2008 I graduated from California State University, Fullerton with my B.A. in Communication with an emphasis on journalism.
Of course life happens and I had to take a year off of everything to take care of my mom and younger brother. I thought I would never recover and would forever play catch up but then my older brother sat me down and told me that I needed to pursue my own dreams. So I started a blog and started posting reviews. It was fun but I was still missing something.
When author Valerie Twombly suggested I try my hand at writing I was skeptical that anyone would want to read stories from my head. I love fantasy and I fall in love with the most unique heroes. So between reading, working and taking care of my younger brother, I wrote my first novel and in 2014 I hit publish.
Not even a year later I have released my second novella and working hard to get the third one out. I have more faith in myself and hope to one day become a full-time author and blogger.
So I would like to tell those who have been told that they will never amount to anything that there is hope. You are only held down by your own limitations. Reach for what you want and fight to hold on to it.
5 Stars because it’s my review and I really enjoy this read.
First, I know his name is Ja’Ivan but I just want y’all to know that I’ve been calling this man Jovon this whole book because in my head he black too. I love him! He’s such a great leader and they way he loves Brandy, he had no problem telling her how he felt. We love an expressive King.
One of my favorites parts: “You are the only one who is allowed to see the real me. I look forward to the time when we are alone, and I am no longer a clan leader but your man.” Okay Jovan!!!
Black Science Fiction is my favorite and this book didn’t disappoint. Brandy was brave, fearless, and she loved her people both Human and Relic. I STAN a strong heroine👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👑. I enjoyed the world building and I forward to the next piece of the story. I was a little confused at the beginning because the timeline seems off but other than that this book was amazing.
This was my favorite book from Ms. Woods! I am hoping for more books in this spin off series. The relics are so sweet and honest. I love looking at the world through their eyes and seeing them learn to live again.
Hopefully a new series by author Pauline Woods. Post apocalyptic Earth as people who disagree with the government are thrown into the wastelands. A survivor is saved by alien Cyborgs called Relics. Lots of great characters are introduced and a whole new world is found. Lots of smexy smexy times and I cant wait until thr next book in the series.
This was a rollercoaster ride for me. The story was pretty good but the execution left much to be desired. Was this a spin-off from another series??? I felt we should have been warned it introduced to this in some way
First, the grammatical errors. Why don't these authors Spring for an editor Too many errors that were too distracting.
Then there was the continuity errors. How did the Relics get to earth? Why were the nest aliens just dropped into the mix without introductions warning ? Why would the Relics just trust them and shut down so they could take them to their ship? I was just really confused.
And of course the most disturbing and confusing, that this ancient race of alien Relics all had human names. This was just too convenient and ridiculous!
I gave one star because the story has a lot of potential! Hopefully the author would work on these insurance the next book.
Ja'Ivan saves Brandy after she has been ousted by the Government for being part of the Resistance.
Not only does he save her, but his need to protect and care for her kicks in, and he realizes that she is his rit...his one although his second in command was created and promised to him.
This book is a cross between cyborgs and humans incorporating AI while evolving and then regressing. This book packs a punch and makes you think about what we are bombard3d with from the news and the Governments while trying to remain true to who and what you are.
I would love more stories from this author in this vein. Definitely will be looking out for this author in the future.
I am very intrigued by the concept of this story, however it needed a bit more polish prior to publishing, for example: "powered milk" instead of "powdered milk," and "Bandy" instead of "Brandy." Some of the plot was also confusing, when Eden was mentioned, was that a human colony on another planet, a colony elsewhere on Earth, or somewhere else entirely? When did the Relics stop there prior to finding the FMC? So I wanted to power through, but like I said, the book just needs a bit more editing.
It took me a while to realize that this was the same universe as the Nexella series, except told from a different species point of view. There was a big jump between what was happening to the female lead on earth and the male lead in space. Also the author didn’t address the code issue that’s been floated through several books. Although the author does a pretty good job of describing the environment, she does not do a good job of describing character physical traits. It leaves an incomplete picture in the reader’s mind.
This was one of the best books EVER. Ja'Ivan and Brandi crossed space and galaxies to be together. Nothing can compare with real love. I have waited to find a Scify romance with a black herion. This is what I've been looking for. The fantasy genre has been blessed and uplifted by Ms. Woods. I'm so happy to have found her books
The world building and characters are intriguing, pulling you in from the first page. The story could do with some editing and bit more fleshing out especially in the first few chapters that aren't as strong or the action isn't as clear as later chapters.
Wonderful story to read! I enjoyed reading about struggles, love and conflict with different species! I do hope there will be a story of Hope! I would love to read about her and her adventures! Must read!!
This is a new author for me and really enjoyed the story!! Can't wait to read more from her. I loved the characters and the story was really different. I hope she will continue with this series I would love to find out about some of the other characters!!!
My first read by Paulina Wood is a sci-fi futurist romance. Brandy and Ja’Ivan are two souls looking to find their forever home. Brandy was thrown from The Gate and Ja’Ivan searched for a planet where his people could thrive. Searching through the new planet much like earth Brandy and Ja’Ivan will also discover each other. There is one who will not agree with Ja’Ivan’s choice as a mate. A small number of mutinous Relics will seek to remove Brandy from the equation as well as Ja’Ivan.
I enjoyed this story and found it to be well-developed. I may also check out more from this author in the future.
4.6. Excellent worldbuilding and chemistry between the hero and heroine. There were points of confusions that became clearer as you read (and / or allowed yourself to fill in the blanks). As others mentioned, there could've been some polishing up to explain certain parts of the story. I also felt as if the end tension came somewhat unexpectedly and could've been alluded to just a bit more in the middle. Otherwise, though, very intriguing tale that I pulled through quite quickly.
