The Capital of Free Women examines how African-descended women strove for dignity in seventeenth-century Mexico. Free women in central Veracruz, sometimes just one generation removed from slavery, purchased land, ran businesses, managed intergenerational wealth, and owned slaves of African descent. Drawing from archives in Mexico, Spain, and Italy, Danielle Terrazas Williams explores the lives of African-descended women across the economic spectrum, evaluates their elite sensibilities, and challenges notions of race and class in the colonial period.

Comencé a leer este libro pensando que Capital se refería a la capital, Xalapa, pero más bien (o además de) se estaba refiriendo a los capitales que las mujeres libres (libertas o segunda generación libre) empleaban para su subsistencia e incluso para su ascenso durante los siglos XVI y XVII. Capitales económicos, sociales, religiosos, familiares: hacerse amiga del cura, asentar en actas sus bienes y sus liberaciones por buen servicio, apelar a la caridad de los amos, casarse, claro. Algunas mujeres libres tenían esclavas y esclavos sin que quede perfectamente claro que se trataba de un caso de altruismo. Todo era un jugo de capitales, pues.

Interesantísima la narración del último capítulo, la Great Siege, la toma del puerto por el pirata Lorencillo.

En cuanto a investigación, mmm, la verdad es que no es tanto lo que no se pueda encontrar en trabajos previos (mexicanos), como Chávez-Hita y los propios Archivos Generales; pero sí se agradece que esté todo compendiado y tematizado y que la prosa sea clara. Se ve que fue un trabajo de larguísimo aliento y eso lo respeto harto.

This history book, drawn from New Spain's 17th/18th-century notarial archives, vividly brings to life resilient, witty, caring, and independent free women of African descent in colonial Mexico. Its human tone and unveiled stories connected me to my own heritage and that of my family in the region, shaped by their struggles and successes against a system constantly trying to contest their existences and erase them. These women will forever linger in my mind.

Hopefully a translation into Spanish is somewhere in the works.
