Clyde's Corner #3

One Trick Pony

Rate this book
This book is set in the Clyde's Corner universe, but it features a new couple and can be read as a stand-alone.

Forgiving yourself is the first step toward finding true love.

Henry Atkins is determined to turn around his no-good, sorry life and prove to the residents of Clyde’s Corner that he’s not the town bad boy anymore. If going to church every Sunday with the Ladies Society is what it takes to polish his reputation, he’s all in. But when every secret fantasy in his head walks into the stables at Muddy River Ranch, the straight and narrow path he’s on takes a wild detour. It never felt so good to be so bad.

Micah has been one of the biggest porn stars in the world for five years, but he’s burned out. His body won’t cooperate to film even one more scene. A month’s vacation with his old friend Ben in Montana is just what his jaded heart needs. He wants rest, fresh air, and to not be recognized by a living soul. He sure as hell isn’t looking for a fling, and he wants nothing to do with Henry, the fanboy who works at Ben’s ranch.

The two men are both seeking a fresh start, an escape from the demons of their past. Fly fishing lessons on the river uncover the surprising number of things they have in common and forms a heartfelt bond that might save their weary souls. Only Micah’s past isn’t through with him yet.

This is my favorite of all three books in the series!

The porn star theme is not a favorite of mine, but Micah (known in the gay porn world as Devon) and his growing dread about having to record yet another sex scene felt genuine. Micah is so done with the pretense and pressure of porn, he's having trouble performing. He needs a break and he needs it now.

Henry loves his job working for Ben and Joshua. He loves ranch life, especially the horses. Henry's been working hard to become a better person. He's lost weight and pulled his life together, but small towns don't forgive easily.

I wanted to hug Henry and never let him go. He is such a sweetheart, so considerate of not making Micah feel uncomfortable, he'll barely look at him. He's well aware Micah is Devon, but soon he comes to see Micah as just Micah: gorgeous, yes, but also vulnerable and a little insecure.

The majority of the story focuses on the men getting to know each other. Henry introduces Micah to fly fishing, and they watch movies in Henry's trailer. This is a slower burn, tender story with a believable shift from friends to lovers.

Henry needs to earn Micah's trust before Micah can see sex as pleasure, not a job. And Henry never pushes Micah, because just being with Micah is enough.

The last few chapters introduce a suspense storyline I'm not sure was necessary, but maybe Henry needed to be a hero and see himself as the strong and capable man he is.

I'm a huge fan of cowboy romance anyway; throw in Eli Easton's mad writing skills and a ride-off-into-the-sunset kind of HEA, and this book comes in big for the win.

I have mixed feelings because I loved a few things but was not so fan of others. I really liked the relationship development that was slow and very sweet. They connected on fly fishing and trying to improve their lives. I really felt their deepening connection. However, at one point the lack of communication and assumptions on both sides started to grate me the wrong way. Also, Micah is a porn star and his fear of being recognised felt overblown to me. Are porn star that famous? I've read another book with a porn star MC and he was also recognized all the time. Is that a book cliche or real?
I did not like the Ladies Society and their nosy behaviour. Plus I did not really get why Henry needed them to improve his social standing. No one seemed to be harassing him outside of the sheriff. We were told repeatedly that he was shun but we did not really see it. Then another pet peeve of mine: one of the MC learns something personal about the other MC from a third party. I don't like that IRL and in books. Finally I was not a fan of the third act, I skimmed a bit TBH. I don't want to spoil what happened because you might like it but I'm not sure it worked in this story.

Sorry to say this didn’t work for me at all. I usually find EE’s books thoroughly enjoyable reads, but this felt so far removed from her other works it didn’t even feel like she wrote it. The plot was both unbelievably messy and boring. Both MCs felt very bland, which was disappointing because there was so much to work with. Henry, a quiet small town closeted ranch hand, is trying to turn his former reputation around after years of bullying. He had a rough life with an abusive father and a mother who abandoned him. Micah, an out successful gay porn actor, is feeling burnt out with his job and life and takes a few weeks off to recalibrate at his friend’s ranch in small Montana town Clyde’s Corner. Henry and Micah strike up a friendship, which eventually turns to more.

So what didn’t work?
➡️ As I said, Henry and Micah felt sort of bland. I didn’t find their romantic relationship particularly exciting, and what we did get was minimal. I did enjoy their friendship.
➡️ The town Clyde’s Corner kind of sucks. I normally love the small town setting, but every character we came across was either annoying, judgmental, or an asshole. In some cases all 3! As much as we were told it was accepting, the vibe was homophobia-central.
➡️ The weird and random stalker kidnapping. So left field and unnecessary for the last 25% of the book. Also, the weirdo creep in the epilogue?? WHAT WAS THE POINT.
➡️ Lastly, but my biggest gripe was the dialogue all written in what can only be described as camp cowboy hick vernacular. It was so distracting and hard to follow I was losing my mind.

I still enjoy EE and will read her books to come, but this is definitely my least favorite of hers ☹️

This book left me with mixed feelings. On the one hand I enjoyed the story of both mc's - Henry and Micah. Watch them fall in love and see how they both dealt with Micah's job as a porn star. Not just the fact that he was making porn movies, but mainly how to experience the difference between reality and acting when they started giving in to their mutual attraction. I loved the scenes where Henry taught Micah to fly-fish. The description of the sun rise, the stillness of being there on that river in the early mornings, when there wasn't any disturbance. Just being and feel overwhelmed by the beauty that nature is. They were sweet together, Henry and Micah.
But there were also some things I did not like about this story. I didn't like how the Ladies Society was involved in Henry's life, deciding things for him and not once asking if Henry was okay with it. Henry could have said that he wasn't, but he didn't do that either. I specially didn't like them forcing him to talk about his weight loss in public (which can be a sensitive topic to readers, specially when it's something a person is admired for) and their involvement to find him a wife.

I didn't care much for the other side stories, which in my opinion, took away the focus of the main romance. I usually like small town stories, but in this one the involvement of the town's residents was a bit too overdone. Also, the last part of the story wasn't working well for me. A little too much drama that didn't suit the story.
All in all, I guess an okay read.

Welcome back to Clyde's Corner!

I enjoyed the story and liked the characters, and it was nice revisiting Clyde's Corner.

Dual POV, contemporary romance that's mostly a sweet cinnamon roll of a story that's spiced up with a bit of suspense / danger in the third quarter, and has a very happy ending.

I started this book without reading the blurb, because I enjoyed all of Eli Easton’s books I read in the past. When I found out one of the MCs is a porn star, I had second thought. The thing is, I always believe featuring a porn star is the easy way mm romance authors use to write erotically charged books, and I hate those books that focus primarily on sex and forgo plot. Luckily I put my faith in Eli and pressed on. Turns out it’s not about the sex industry at all. Though it features one brief filming scene (which fades to black), the novel has it focus elsewhere. It’s about the beautiful and emotional road to redemption of a bad cowboy, the other MC in the book, and his finding love along the way.

If you love a feel good story set in a picturesque small town somewhere in Montana, with nosy residents, a suspicious sheriff, and too many gay porn stars to handle for such a small populace, you’ll love this novel. It brings back characters from Book 1 of the series, A Prairie Dog’s Love Song (which I haven’t read), in which Henry, the then bad cowboy, outed Ben’s gay porn star status to the whole town. Fast forward to the current story, Henry, an employee under Ben and his husband Joshua’s ranch, is a new man - sobered up, shedding a lot of weight, determined to redeem his past and become an accepted resident of Clyde’s Corner. In the mean time, Ben is welcoming a porn star friend, Micah, to a one-month vacation at his ranch. The secret fanboy, Henry, and the porn star meet, awkward at first, but eventually find in each other the good souls under the deceptive outer appearance. The book ended in a high note, one of the best endings I read in a while.

Eli Easton is great storyteller. In addition to her terrific prose, she weaves in her story all the small details that keep you hooked, and make the places, the characters very real and lively. It’s no easy feat, as the author needs to know the subject of their story very well, do careful research, and take pains to include all these details in the story line, as opposed to writing a straight-forward story - an expanded copy of the blurb - as I see many romance writers do these days. I always admire these devoted authors, and make a point to support them as much as possible.

If there is one thing I wish from this book to make it perfect, it’s to make the characters more unique and memorable. They are surely endearing, and I love them, especially Henry, but they’re not particularly standing out from the crowd. Henry, apart from his fly-fishing enthusiasm, does not have much to keep me remembering him, say, a few years from now. Nevertheless, this is a great book, very heart-warming and entertaining, one that keep me reading late into the night. And I’d recommend it to all romance fans.

I always enjoy Eli’s well-written stories and the connection she builds between her main characters. One Trick Pony is a lovely romance and redemption story combined. It didn’t follow the route I was expecting and I thoroughly enjoyed the angsty adventure towards the end.

Henry and Micah are wonderful characters and are great together as friends and as lovers. I loved the tentative start to their relationship due to Micah’s experience in porn and how their connection builds gradually over the story because of the time spent fly fishing and working on the ranch together.

The author set up the angst nicely via the objectionable Sheriff, the Ladies’ Society and Henry’s need for redemption, Henry’s sexual inexperience and being in the closet, together with Micah’s limited time at Clyde Corner, his sexual difficulties, and wanting to keep his porn star status a secret. There were lots of potential areas for disaster! I certainly liked the path Eli took these guys.

This was a sweet and entertaining read that tugged on your heartstrings. Recommended.

I recently enjoyed re-listening to A Prairie Dog’s Love Song (Book 1) where we first meet Henry, Ben and Joshua and are introduced to Clyde’s Corner and the B2B porn studios. I think you could still read this story without having read the first two books without feeling lost.

Love a good redemption story!

This is definitley my favorite book of the Clyde's Corner series. Henry is mostly just mentioned in the previous books, but he's known as the town loser and bully. When I saw that this was his book, I was excited! I love to read about characters who take a moment to re-evaluate their lives and then work hard to become better people, especially in romance. (Heck, I love the stories where they don't become better people, but this isn't one of those.) And I was invested in his redemption from the first chapter. This is a slow burn romance and I absolutely loved the friendship that Micah and Henry build together, and how they really take their time getting to know each other and building trust. They're both working through a lot of baggage and this is definitely one of those stories where they meet at the time right time and when they're both truly ready to start opening up to another person. There is a bit of s3xual tension during the slow burn - just enough - but they are explosive when they finally take things further.

I would consider this book low angst, but it does have some yummy drama that's external to the relationship. It's kind of predictable, but I loved it. Eli's books are seriously a joy to read and I can't wait for the next book!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

This was a sweet and sensual odd couple romance with a savvy city boy finding the stalwart country man to be both attractive and indispensable. I loved the bonding moments they shared at sunrise, whipping those fishing lines out and back, out and back, searching for that big bite. There is a distinct cadence to the story, with Henry’s parts sounding a little slower, as he’s a little more deliberate in all he does—with pondering his options in the community and being precise in his language. The Ladies Society was a hoot and a half, and I could visualize how carried away they were getting with their misguided do-gooding. Micah is a man with plans, and he’s afraid to deviate too far. His future plans include opening a business for himself, as he fears that no employer would hire a former porn star. So, he’s been taking college courses to support that goal. But, maybe there are other avenues that he could explore, both personally and professionally, with the help of both Ben and Henry.

Nice cowboy love. This was a small town, steady and sweet book. I haven’t read the book before this one to have a biased towards H so that also helped. I actually felt bad for him. The way even his friends still treated him like he was a mess up. I wish that got taken care of. Ben still thought bad things about H even at the end. He warned M off and then accused H for the issues. Some friend. Beyond that this was good. It was peaceful kinda like sitting out in the river fishing. The writing was good, the smexy was good, and the side characters were…. Well small town characters.

I liked this series well enough, the books were a nice read, but really this one stood out.
I loved it from beginning to end, it was sweet, endearing and as I am a sucker for second chances, I really loved that Henry - the a...hole from the first book in the series - got his second chance here.
Absolutely recommended, easily 4 stars for me!

Henry has lived in Clyde's corner all his life .His family and his behaviour have coloured how the people see him. He decides he wants to change starting with losing weight and getting a job. Working with the horses and Joshua and Ben help him turn his life around before the church ladies decide to help his rehabilitation.
Micah is burnt out after 5 years of being one of the top porn stars and visits Joshua and Ben to get away from the pressure. His first meeting with Henry is complicated by the fact Henry is huge fan .
Henry and Micah bond over fly fishing and find they form a close friendship. One of Micah's fans takes fandom to an extreme level and they need to overcome obstacles to find a HEA.
I like a good redemption story and Henry definitely redeems himself .

Loved this story! Henry and Micah both had troubled childhoods and self-esteem issues but find the courage to re-invent themselves. They are great together and the relationship grew in a natural way. The story was eventful and I enjoyed revisiting Ben and Joshua. I liked the small-town vibe. As a Brit I had to look up some of the Americanisms but that was for interest. It didn’t pull me out of the story and just added to the ‘local colour’.

One Trick Pony is about Henry Atkins who was a huge jerk in Prairie Dog’s Love Song and Micah who is a burnt out adult film star taking a month off and staying at Joshua and Ben’s ranch where Henry works. I love a good redemption story! Henry has worked hard to turn his life around and is hoping the people of the town he loves can give him a chance to prove to them that he’s no longer a bully. This was another fantastic book in this series. I have fallen in love with Clyde’s Corner and hope this book does well so Eli will write more stories about the men who live there.

Beautiful love story

I do love me a good redemption story, and I'm happy to say that Ms Easton has really delivered in this one. It's so well written, the dialogue is first class and the character development is spot on.

Henry and Micah as a couple are tremendous. They're not what you'd really call a 'normal' couple. Henry's the town's bad boy, misunderstood, and looking to make amends, and you've got to love him. I just wanted to hug him, every time he put himself down.

Micah's a burned out porn star, and one of the sweetest, most thoughtful characters I think I've come a cross in any story. He has a heart of gold. The pair of them are complete opposites, which is exactly why their interactions are so entertaining, but work so very well.

The way in which Eli writes, her characters, makes them feel so real. All the secondary characters are also great throughout, and bring another layer to the story, especially Charlie (loved his little doisms), Joshua and Ben from book one of the series.

Micah and Henry's story is sexy and sweet, and totally swept me off my feet. I very quickly fell in love with the pair of them. I certainly won't say no to reading more adventures from this world.

I liked this book a lot, I think it combined elements from the first two books and got a very emotional redemption story.
I always enjoy a book where you get to see the other side of a previously considered "bad" character. Henry Atkins is just that, a real heart of gold guy who turned his life around for himself first and got the guy because of it. The romance is satisfying and real, steamy and not too physically focused.
Micah also has a similar vibe, stuck in a job he does not like and can't get out he finds things he likes and things to like about himself because of Henry.
I enjoyed how the entire town was a part of this story, characters from the previous 2 books having a major role in shaping the plot.
You get the feel of why Henry loves his town so much, and you kind of fall in love with it too.

If there were ever two men with less self-confidence, more doubts about “deserving” love, general angst about a relationship, and a lack of happiness in their current or future life, then I haven’t met or read about them. Henry and Micah may have different backgrounds and reasons for their misconceptions, but the result is the same for both of them. As the blurb says they need to figure out how to forgive themselves before they can move on, and that is one heck of a tough task!

This was a really lovely story about two men trying to redeem and being true to themselves. Henry had a difficult upbringing and did some things he regrets. He decides to change but he still has a bad reputation in the town. Micah is a burnt out gay porn star who comes and stay with friends to get his mojo back. He starts to form a friendship with the awkward and shy Henry. I really enjoyed following their story. It was sweet and they both come out stronger. Definitely gave me a warm feeling 💜 The only slight negative is some of the slang/dialect was hard to understand but got the gist of it.

Loved this. I think it's my favourite of the series.
Redeemed bad boys are one of my favourite tropes, along with gruff mountain men with marshmallow centres. So Henry really hit the spot for me and his desire to be accepted damn near broke me. Him and Micah make a perfect couple.
Plenty of Ben and Joshua in this one too, and I'm really pleased to see how settled they are.

Hope to get this in audio one day.
Oh, and I feel like Charlie needs to have an epiphany, just saying.

This is such an enjoyable and entertaining story. I read the first two books in this series quite some time ago, but immediately the story began I was taken back to Clyde‘s Corner, a small town in the middle of nowhere Montana. Micah a well known gay porn star goes to Clyde’s Corner for a break. His good friend Ben lives there with his partner on a ranch and Micah is burnt out and in need of a rest.

Henry Atkins used to be the town’s bad boy but he’s trying to reform himself. He wants to change his bad reputation and the poor image the townspeople have of him and he enjoys his job on Ben’s ranch. When Henry meets Micah he is kind of starstruck. Micah is actually Devon, a popular porn star and Henry’s dream man. Henry is shy around Micah but the two of them eventually bond over fly fishing and Henry hopes against hope for more, but recognises that Micah will eventually return to his life of bright lights.

This is a lovely romantic story. Two improbable men find love against the odds. The story has just the right amount of angst to be comfortable and a lovely HEA. In some ways the story is a bit predictable because at the end of the day we know that Michael and Henry are going to get together, but there is love, kindness, friendship and also some thrills along the way and suddenly the person who could never be a hero becomes a hero and a dream becomes reality.

I listen to the audiobook and it is really well narrated, with each character having a distinctive voice and bringing the story to life. The narrator manages to take the reader to Clyde’s Corner with its fields, hills a river, and lots of green grass. It’s a very comforting story, kind of cosy and I very much enjoyed listening to it.

Many thanks to the author for providing a free audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.

Both of these characters already appeared in the Clyde Corner series: Henry Atkins was the town's bad boy, rude and bullying. Micah was the hunky porn star that appeared in the first book of the series. Here they have a chance to shine in a book of their own.

Henry Atkins was not a nice person, but he changed his way for the better, if only the town would give him a second chance. He befriend Micah, a porn star fleeing Las Vegas to recover after his porn career was flagging (!). They started fly-fishing together and that act as a catalyst to life-changing events for both of them.

I liked the story, it was a nice gentle romance about redemption and second chances. I admire how Eli can take a very unpleasant character from the first two books, and totally redeem him. Very nicely done.

Although Henry was the "villain" in the first book, we really didn't see much of him, so I found his reformation plausible once he was out from under his father's abusive control. I loved seeing these two men wanting and trying to change their lives.

This is everything I could have wanted in a cosy small town romance book! The bonding conversations between Henry and Micah were some of the best I’ve read in romance, and I loved how working in adult films (Micah’s job) was treated without judgement. I had a soft spot for reformed bully Henry.

This was 5 stars until the last 20%. I'm not really a fan on the type of contrived drama that happened at the end of this story. It didn't feel necessary.

I did loved Henry and Micah together. They were great characters, as individuals and as a couple! I'm just annoyed at the dumb ending.

Note: Technically this is book 3 in this series and as such contains major spoilers for the first two books. I can be read as a standalone, but to fully enjoy (and because the other books are so fun too), reading them in order provide the backstory and context for the other characters here.

Henry Atkins has reformed his ways. He’s got a job, stopped getting drunk and causing trouble and spends his morning fly-fishing on the Missouri. He’s content with his life, but not so much that he won’t take help when offered. He’s been trying to make amends to the people he hurt in his bad old days – not always having that help received without skepticism. But when his old teacher vows to take him under the wing of the Ladies Society and launch at #ReformHenry campaign, well he figures he’ll take the help. Now if only they didn’t want to pair him off with some suitable young lady 😉

Micah Bartholomew is tired. He’s burned out. The gay porn star business is not all glamour. It’s hard work and he’s just had it. Unable to perform, he knows he needs a break. So he heads to Montana to stay with Ben, a former B2B model who returned home to Clyde’s Corner to live with his boyfriend on a ranch. Yeah things weren’t all rosy when he was outed as a gay porn model, but Ben and Joshua, his guy have made a nice life for themselves. When Micah goes to stay with them, he meets Henry, who works hard for them.

Henry recognizes him as Devon, the porn star, and kind of makes a fool of himself because of the shock. But as the two get to know each other, they share their innermost thoughts and fears. Their pre-dawn fly-fishing lessons give them the chance to really get to know each other without any pressure. And Micah hasn’t felt true desire in a long time – but now he feels it for Henry. But Henry isn’t out 🙁 And Micah’s only in Clyde’s Corner for a month. So maybe this will be a fling? They enjoy what they are doing, but neither one thinks it can last – even though they want it to. And when Micah’s past sneaks in, then maybe forever won’t be for either of them 🙁

Well this book was a total joy to read. I really liked the previous two books that took place in this setting and this one was another winner. Henry’s self-improvement plan and the Ladies Society’s “hashtag reform Henry” project are the vehicle whereby Henry rehabilitates both his reputation and his life. His move up from no good “Akins” troublemaker to out gay man upstanding citizen town hero take a lot of doing. And not everyone is so wiling to give him the benefit of the doubt (I’m talking about you Sheriff Preston), but in the end, nobody can deny that the drunk and disorderly Henry Atkins is gone for good. Micah’s realization that he CAN have more and that he can leave his porn star career behind sooner than he thought he could is of course accelerated by the events of the story. But it’s clear that his porn star days are coming to an end. He’s not happy doing the work any more and he is making steps to have a business after his B2B work is over. The fact that Ben and Joshua (our MCs from the first book in the series, A Prairie Dog’s Love Song) are willing to help him and of course he’s got Henry and they’ve had some long talks about what they want to do with the rest of their lives, help him decide once and for all to make the transition. Even the Ladies Society is on board! The dialogue and little details about the land, the ranch, even rodeoing adding an authentic feel to the story. I also adored the cameo appearances from the last book – especially watching Mabe Stubben in action. LOL! Seeing Chris and Trix and Eric and Jeremy again, happy in their respective lives made for some sweet “awwww” moments. I loved this second chances, reformed bad boy with a heart of gold and a guy who finds just what he needs in a little corner in Montana finding their HEA. Highly recommended!
