Karl Newson writes for the children’s book blog The Mudwaffler and contributes to The Creative Attic, an online publication of illustrated poetry. For All the Stars Across the Sky is his debut picture book. He lives in England.
The Same But Different Too is a wonderful, simple and clear rhyming read. Things can be the same, but different too. This is a story about children and animals, who have similarities and differences. Whilst I really love the message, and thinking about what is the same with others who appear different is valuable, I think the use of animals as the comparison is perhaps more socially accepted. I really think children should explore this message with the people they share their world with. It would have been nice to have a page, perhaps at the end, encouraging this. This would definitely be how I would follow a reading of this story.
A girl and a dog wear similar outfits ‘I am me, and you are you.’ Then the rhyme carries onto the next page with a cat and a girl with the same coloured hair wearing the same clothes ‘We're the same, but different too’. This wonderful rhythm carries on through the book, and as the book develops, so does the rhyme. It is simple. So easily memorable, children will soon be able to join in with the reading.
This text is so simply representative of a wide range of children, who are less likely to find themselves in books. Different children, from various ethnicities, with different hair colours, clothing styles, with different mobility assistants, to the various hobbies and interests. This will help more readers to feel represented in narratives.
For various personal reasons 😂, I think an awful lot about how hard it is to make a simple picture book--that is, one that reads effortlessly while still engaging its understandably finicky readers.
One recent read that does a fabulous job of creating an engaging younger-picture-book-reader experience is Karl Newson and Kate Hindley's "The Same But Different Too."
Written in a fluid rhyme that incorporates lots of gentle humor with delightful illustration work, the result is an endearing and well-paced showcase of how interesting and exciting differences--and similarities!--can be. It's compare and contrast within a "we're all in this together, tribe" mindset, and I am here for it! Older kids and adults, too, will be charmed by the character cast and funny little details that are re-readings award, such as a book titled "Bedtime Snories," a rainy "Bleak St." bus stop, and a "gruff" character being cast as a billy goat.
With the energy and humor of the P. D. Eastman classic, "Big Dog, Little Dog," and charming characters of all sorts in a "what might happen if kindhearted humans lived in a Richard-Scarry-esque world" (I mean, isn't that the dream?)--I can imagine the vast majority of kid readers having one word as a response to this sweet (but not saccharine) jaunt--"AGAIN!"
A Celebration of all the wonderfully different and similar things that make us who we are.

MY THOUGHTS:
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
I requested this book to read and review because it happened to come across my desk when my daughter, who is special needs, was having trouble understanding why she was different from the other kids. We’d just had a talk about how great it was to be different rather than like all the rest. I had asked her why she’d ever want to be the same because that could be very boring. Those things that make us different from each other should be celebrated, I told her, not to mention they make us unique.
This book shares beautifully illustrated pages full of bright and wonderful differences that can easily be identified with. It’s presented age appropriately, using animals vs. human representations to highlight differences in a playful and silly way. This book would be great for children who are just beginning to read and even for special needs children too. Parental involvement to answer any arising questions would also be great
Amazing adorable menagerie of characters highlighting their similarities and differences! These illustrations are absolutely so endearing. I just want to hug each one! The most important message of this book jumps out from the get go- I am me and you are you and that is just the way it is supposed to be. Our similarities and differences are what keep the balance in the world. We need each other.
Simple examples highlight the similarities and the differences and show how they are beneficial and that they work together for a symbiotic relationship. The rhymes are very nice and flow easily and the illustrations enrich the simple words. This is a great read-aloud which will be memorized and recited along. It is just so sweet. I really appreciate the attention to mindfulness and how it presents different ways of paying attention. The last 2-page spread is adorable beyond words! Highly recommend this book!
There's a whole lot of different kids and a whole lot of different animals that you will see from the cover and inside. It's sometimes an opposite book, "I am big. You are small. I am short. You are tall.", but Karl Newson adds delightful surprises on some of the pages. I spent the whole time grinning from page to page, reading the words like "I am playful. You are too. I can't hide as well as you." looking at kids being silly with a turtle and a zebra standing by a black and white striped wall while a young girl peeks behind a houseplant. Its spare text all in rhyme brought to colorfully creative life by Kate Hindley is fabulous.
This book is about the many creatures in the world such as humans and animals and how we are similar in many ways, but also different. We may feel the same emotions and like the same stuff, but there will still always be something different between each other! We are all creatures in the world making it day by day. This book is very cute in recognizing the similarities between animals and humans because we are all part of this world. This book is short but it would be good in the classroom when learning about animals too. We are creatures in the world who can be very similar and different at the same time.
This book describes the differences and similarities about animals and kids. I love this book because while they acknowledge they are equal they make it a point to show their differences as well. I think it is very important to show that we have differences because these differences make us who we are. I would use this in my classroom to celebrate our similarities and our differences. I would discuss or even make an anchor chart.
This book rhymes back and forth opposite things different animals and objects do. At the end it brings together everyone by mentioning everyone loving stories. I would use this book in a pre-k classroom only. I say this because it is a little more aimed towards that age. I would use this book though, especially at circle time for discussion. I also am taking a minute to make note about the illustrations...they rock.
This picture book joyfully explores how we are both similar and different, showcased through two children frolicking among various animals. The quirky illustrations, somewhere between Mercer Mayer and Richard Scarry, make it especially engaging as a nighttime read-aloud.
Perfect for younger audiences, this gentle story already feels like a classic. Highly recommended for preschool classrooms and home libraries alike.
Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC.
Karl Newson and Kate Hindley have expressed a very simple idea - the countless differences, big and small, between us all - with brilliant read-out-loud rhyming text and beautifully vibrant illustrations. It's a joyous, colourful, funny and heart-warming bedtime read.
Lovely pictures throughout the book Read this book in Nursery but would be suitable for any age upwards particularly the younger years as it portrays a lovely message to children that it’s okay to be different Simple text is also used for younger children to understand
A delightful look at things children have in common with others yet, how very different we are as well. Lovely illustrations - so colorful and fun. The illustrator does a fantastic job comparing small children to a multitude of critters - fun rhymes as well!
A great picture book for children to learn that people can be different but also the same. The book has a lot of preposition words and also opposites. I love the illustrations as well!
