This review is for the audiobook version of Omega Taskforce 1-3 by GJ Ogden and narrated by Steve Barnes.

Omega Taskforce fits among some of my favorite military sci-fi and space opera series. The premise and set up are unique and present the characters with understandable moral dilemmas that make the reader think.

If you enjoy Jack Campbell, Orson Scott Card, and/or Joe Haldeman then you’ll likely enjoy Omega Taskforce as well.

Steve Barnes wasn’t as good a narrator as Ogden proved to be as an author. He was fine, but his performance wasn’t very memorable. I’ll remember Taskforce long after I’ve forgotten Barnes.

This Volume Was Essential

This book provided more information about the enemy and the internal conflicts within the Earth
forces. The dialogue and explanations of each crewmember provided more understanding of their personalities.

Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this book. free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

I like sci-fi but, being the low-brow fella I am, I prefer stories with lots of of action, space battles and explosions rather than deep world-building politics. As such, this book was a pleasant surprise as, while not brainless, it has action and excitement in spaces.

I'm unsure of the years that passed between the writing of the 3 books in this compilation, but I assume several passed as the difference in writing from book 1, through 2 and into 3 is startling. Book one feels like a self-published pulp novel with unrealistic, shallow caricatures of heroes and non-nonsensical scenes. That said, the story was great and the threat of the Sa'Nerra felt very real with high stakes and the hijacking of humans was a brilliant idea I'd not seen as an invasion method before.

Book 2, while still suffering from stereotypes (such an almost entirely female main crew..), the characters are much deeper and some (such as the excellent standout character Griffin) are really well written and memorable.
Again, action has really improved and it was great to see both excellent space battles, but also a fantastically powerful female characters.

By book 3 is where Ogden has really hit his stride, with both amazing action but also a real sense of humanity to the crew (both for the human members and others), with a real sense of mental suffering and PTSD with the crew facing a hunt into the unknown depths of The Void.

Throughout all books, regardless of the quality of the writing, Steve Barnes' work is top notch with each character narrated with personality and emotion. He really succeeds in added gravitas to moments of danger and humour to the rare, but all the more essential light-hearted moments.

An excellent read and I'm pumped for books 4 onwards.

Humanity expanded into the universe and bumped into a hive species that has no concept of surrender or negotiation - and to make matters worse, they are smart. These aren't mindless completely alien bugs looking for protein like in Weber & White's The Shiva Option. These aliens are a manipulative, conniving enemy turning some of humanity's greatest strengths into liabilities. The team fighting them? A ship full of the coldest, most ruthless, morally ambiguous soldiers a certain secret department could dredge up. They'll do what needs to be done, no matter the cost, but is it enough? and is it worth it?

Explosive, action-filled, military sci-fi space opera. Everything from space battles to hand-to-hand combat. This ship is crewed with mostly the kind of people Frank Castle would fit in well with. They seem like good people, but kinda scary and you don't want to be on their bad side - especially since some of them are unnerved by their companions. Humor was well used in this book too - kept things moving and from getting too dark. The political intrigue was wrapped into the story in an interesting way too - the repercussions of attacks on various human outposts play a roll in the conflict as well adding depth.

The character development in this series is top notch - as the series progresses cracks are showing, it seems the crew might be human after all. Well, maybe not the doctor - he's still creepy. Loved the addition of the latest 4 legged crew member, and the ongoing jokes about the meal packs. Hey, sometimes that is what matters. The complexity con the conflict at home, with the aliens, with outposts - this is a great, rich, fully nuanced read, not some singularly focused war.

I'm a fan of sci fi military fiction, so I enjoyed this for the most part. I would have loved to dig a little deeper into the characters though, especially Commander Graves, there has to be an interesting story there. I read the first three books, I don't know if there is any more to the series than that, but it would be a shame if there wasn't more to it.

Two things bothered me though. The over use of the phrase "hit back" in place of replied or responded over the course of book 2 and 3. And the fact that they always went offship with five commandoes and all of them die every time. Is that a question of poor leadership/bad staffing or a poor training issue by fleet?

If you like sci fi military fic, give it a go.

Engaging

Ok. First of all I want to know how Jinx got hurt and then I want to know how many times does the bridge crew and the captain in particular have to peel themselves off the floor before they install harnesses. Just saying. I loved the book and the characters though no romance which I usually like and the drama.

Good book with plenty of action

Really good character development as the books carried on. Can't wait for the next books in the series. Many hard choices must be made in war but there is always a cost to the men and women that make these decisions.

Great story But :

Author Gareth J. Ogden created a beautiful Universe only that us science-fiction readers pay attention to every word and sounds, Mistakes like Captain Lucas Sterling not understanding how he didn’t notice that his Lieutenant is the daughter of a really famous Captain even after she tells him that she never got alone with her father hence she used her mother’s maidan name, also once getting pushed into the back of the seat when there are no seats on the ship deck ( which also makes no sense )and the unlimited commandos on such a small ship like they got a clone factory down at the bay area.
Also i would love to know what so special about the Invictus ( a small ship without any surprises like special weapons or being able to go invisible ) Nothing !
Now the part of the review which I’m having problems finding the words but I’ll try:
Great story which missing emotions or something that I don’t have the right words to explain, something which i can’t understand but for sure something is not there.

Oded Ostfeld.
