"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."

For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."

Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."

More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.

Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.

What booklover doesn't like a book full of bits about other books? In this 15th Judy Moody book, she is part of the Virginia Dare Bookworms. The First Ever Book Quiz Blowout is coming and Judy's team will be up against the Fake-Mustache Defenders from Braintree Academy. It will be a nailbiter of a contest. Who will win?

J and I loved learning about new books from this read as well as reminiscing about ones we have shared already. Now we have some new titles to try in the future. So many books! When we discussed favorite chapters, J chose "Third-Grade Something," the very last chapter where the winners of the trivia contest each get a backpack with their own copy of Charlotte’s Web inside -- one of the best books of all time! 🐷🕸

My choice was "Unicorns Don't Wear Pants" where Judy tries to learn to speed read. This chapter also featured the The Princess in Black chapter books. I really loved the first nine books in the series when I was working at the library. 🦄

From May of 2020:

Five plus stars for the finished edition with all of Peter H. Reynolds' signature illustrations and lists of all the books mentioned in the story -- and there were lots. Now I have new books to add to my TBR list. LOL. Judy Moody is the bomb!

“The Bookworms rule!”
Judy and her brother Stink are reading up a storm.
description
They, along with Frank, Sophie and Jessica, are the Virginia Dare Bookworms. The Bookworms are preparing to beat Braintree Academy’s team, the Bloodsucking Fake-Mustache Defenders, to the buzzer when they compete in the Book Quiz Blowout.

The winning team will not just earn bookish bragging rights. The Book Quiz Wizard’s Cup will be proudly displayed in their school’s library. This is no ordinary trophy - it lights up!
description
She, Judy Moody, was a book quiz whiz. A book wizard. A quizzard!
Judy is frantically practising her speed reading and Stink has his Cape of Good Answers, but when they learn of the other team’s secret weapon the Bookworms’ confidence is shaken.
“Will the Bookworms take a bite out of the Bloodsuckers? Or will the Bloodsuckers sink their fangs into the Bookworms on their way to the finish and take home the trophy?”
description
I always enjoy Peter H. Reynolds’ illustrations, in particular how expressive the children are.

In preparation for the upcoming competition, the Bookworms talk about oodles of children’s books, both classics and more recent bestsellers. As someone who has always sought out potential future reads in my current read, I was delighted to find a list of everything the Bookworms read at the end of the book. All six pages of them, with titles and authors, in alphabetical order! Some of my own childhood favourites are there as well - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlotte’s Web and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

N.B. The title of the copy I read is Judy Moody, Super Book Whiz. On Goodreads this is listed as Judy Moody, Book Quiz Whiz.

I won a copy of this book in a giveaway, which was hosted by Tracey at Carpe Librum. Thank you so much to Carpe Librum, Walker Books and HarperCollins Publishers Australia for the opportunity to read this book.

Five tiddly-pom and piddly-dee stars for this new installment in the Judy Moody series. Judy and her brother Stink are on the Bookworm team together. Also on the team are Frank, Sophie and Judy's former arch nemesis -- Jessica Finch. Mr. Todd is still their beloved teacher and assists in asking the questions on quiz day. The book shows us their preparation for the big event as they dream of crushing their competition -- the Fake-Mustache Defenders. So many great books are mentioned --both old and new. A list of all books mentioned will be included at publishing time. Looking forward to seeing all the finished illustrations and rereading when this title comes to my library.

A big thank you to Candlewick Press and NetGalley for a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Judy Moody and Stink have become bookworms, along with some of their friends. They are going to win the first ever Book Quiz Blowout! As a team, they must read all the books on the list, so that they can beat the 2nd and 3rd graders from the next town over. The prize is money for their school library. The book is filled with funny learning tactics that only Judy and Stink could surmise. The characters are engaging and likable. Readers will enjoy finding new books to read and recognizing their favorites. Fans of Judy Moody and her brother, Stink will want to pick this one up.

This was okay. I think it was a bit too childish, even for children. Cute, but I'm not crazy about it.

I was read this book about books for middle graders, written with a nice pace, compelling characters and minor dramas.

Judy Moody, her brother and friends are going to compete in a book quiz. In order to prepare for it they are in a quest to read as many books from the quiz list and they also quiz each other in preparation for the big day. With references to tens of kids books, this is a gem of a book!
This is apparently #15 in a series. I loved Judy Moody and her brother here, but I also wonder what are they like on a normal day (ie, in the other books of the series)? Are they still bookworms?

There is a list of books referenced in this one. I might be checking those I’ve never read/heard of!

Fans of Jude Moody and Stink are going to love this new story. There's lots of fun going on in their house with a race to read books and win a book quiz. I know many places that offer prizes for most books read by any given child or classroom, but I love the idea of a book quiz; I don't know if any schools or libraries offer them, but maybe they should. Loads of laughs and a great plot, as usual. Megan McDonald writes such wonderful stories! I've been recommending her stories for years to kids at our library. She has quite a fan base.

I received a Kindle arc from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.

Judy, Stink and three others form a team called the Bookworms. During the first ever book quiz blowout, they are up against the Blood-sucking Fake-Mustache Defenders who are also a team of five.
But one of the team is an intimidating 4th grade speed reader. How will Judy's team do? They have studied their books very hard. And their slogan is: "We are the Bookworms. We eat books. We are not endangered!" Very cute. There are references to so many great books of children's literature. This book would serve as a great starting off point for a number of good reads.

*My first Judy Moody read, #15!

I had to fact check a story in the book about George Washington and overdue library book!

It's such fun reading the Judy Moody books. This one was particularly enjoyable because it had to do with books and reading, as Judy and her team compete against another school's team in a battle of the books. There are many books that are discussed in the story and the list of them at the end of the story is useful for those who want to read more. I liked how Judy and her teammates work together and that's another enjoyable part of the story. Peter H. Reynolds' illustrations are always a plus as well. Another outstanding title in a consistently excellent series.

Cute little book about a group of friends reading books nonstop to prepare for the big book quiz. The winning team wins money for new books in their school library! I think this book is great to encourage reading. They mention so many books and authors in this book, it's impossible not to spark one's curiosity about all of the books in the world. Easy book, too– read it in an hour.

Megan McDonald has done it again! This one (her 15th in the Judy Moody series) is as funny as ever, with plenty of word play and fun. I especially liked this one for all its children's book mentions, from Pippi Longstocking to Babymouse.

Personal note: I have a signed, original Judy Moody from 2000, the hardback edition with a diecut cover from Candlewick. Twenty years!

In this exciting addition to the series, Judy Moody finds herself competing in the first-ever Book Quiz Blowout. Her team, the Virginia Terror Bookworms, is up against the formidable Brain Busters from the Brain T Academy and the mysterious Blood-Sucking Fake Mustache Defenders. I have no idea why they have such a strange name!

Judy's team consists of her best friend, Frank Pearl, Jessica Finch, and her brother, Stink. They are ready to take on the challenge. However, there's a problem with the opposing team. One of the members is a fourth-grader, and according to the rules, only kids aged nine or younger can participate in the Book Quiz Blowout. It creates quite a stir!

The book explores the thrilling journey of the Book Quiz Blowout, filled with questions about Harry Potter and many other books. Judy Moody is worried about the competition, especially with the homeschooled girl, Maybe, on the opposing team, who seems to have read half the library. Will Judy and her team be able to outsmart their opponents and emerge victorious? You'll have to read the book to find out!

I enjoyed reading this book because it's full of excitement and challenges. The characters' determination and teamwork inspired me. The primary lesson I learned from this book is that hard work pays off. If you put in the effort and study, you can accomplish anything. It's a valuable lesson for young readers, reminding them that perseverance is critical to success.

The book is filled with fun and humorous moments that will make you laugh out loud. Judy Moody's witty and relatable personality shines through, making her an engaging protagonist. The story also highlights the importance of friendship and supporting each other, even in the face of tough competition.

If you love books, quizzes, and thrilling adventures, then Judy Moody Book Quiz Whiz is the perfect read for you. It will keep you entertained and rooting for Judy and her team until the very end. So, dive into the world of book trivia and enjoy the delightful journey of the Book Quiz Blowout!

Don't just take my word for it - check out the book for yourself! Click the link to purchase and see why it's been praised by so many readers.

Judy Moody, Book Quiz Whiz

I am reviewing a copy of Judy Moody, Book Quiz through Candlewick Press and Netgalley:

Judy Moody is determined to win the Book Quiz Blowout along with her brother Stink. Judy Moody and Stink are two of five of the Virginia Dare Bookworms and they’ve been reading up a storm to prepare for Saturday’s face-off against second- and third-grade readers from the next town.

Judy is trying a variety of tactics from hanging upside down like Pipi Long Stocking to teaching herself to speed read The Princess in Black, while Stink fashioned a cape of book trivia sticky notes to help him remember all the penguins in Mr. Popper’s Penguins. But when Judy, Stink and the rest of their teammates discover the other group has a fourth grader in it they all become nervous.

I give Judy Moody and the Book Quiz Whiz five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

[I received an electronic review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.]

4.5 stars. I haven't enjoyed a Judy or Stink Moody book so much in a long time. Delightful celebration of books and reading (although the emphasis is definitely on accumulating knowledge and winning rather than enjoying the books for their own sake). Lots of familiar titles for kids as well as some that could get readers to try something new. The final copy is supposed to have a full book list in the back.

One of my favorite things about this book is that Judy and Stink are teammates which means they are working together. Very little sibling angst in this book. The kids quiz eachother to get ready for the big event and Judy tries to help Stink when he gets "brain freeze" and butterflies of nervousness.

I will definitely be buying this book for some kiddos in my life and me too. Since I learned to read I have been a bookworm. Reading about kids loving to read in a book for kids makes my heart sing.

I learned there are some pretty cool kids books that I need to read. I’m happy that the final copy will list the books mentioned in the back. What a great reference for parents.

The Judy Moody series continues with another fantastic installment.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Candlewick Press, through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.

A book about elementary school quizzing that gets being a young trivia fan right. The obsession with winning, the superstition, the envy of the private school kids. Bonus points for including a list of all the books mentioned at the end. They were apparently all real books; I only recognized the most famous ones. The questions felt authentic too, most likely due to author McDonald's history as a children's librarian.

I also read "Judy Moody & Stink and the Grand-Slam Book-Bowl Jam", which was apparently an earlier version of story, according to the copyright page, in order to compare them. I enjoyed them both, but I'm only going to count them here as one book.

This is the second book in the last three days that I've read that has had a book list in it! (The other was from the Time Warp Trio series.) Judy, Stink, Sophie of the Elves, Jessica Finch, and Frank are all on a book quiz team preparing for their championship match. I'm glad they won, because regardless of age, it would make a huge difference if one team could have a fourth grader. Plus I'm not really sure I'm a fan of speed reading. I have more of a slow down and savor things attitude toward life. Faster isn't always better.

Judy Moody is back roar -laughing, charming and brilliant book to the series. Judy's humor, relationship with her family and friends, and the all around feeling of being in third grade, the nerves of a Book quiz tournament and the reference to a lot of fantastic books made this a real page-turner. We even get to see Judy dress up as Pippi Longstocking for the book quiz, which was such a fantastic moment. This book is a must-read for all Judy Moody fans and bookworms alike!!!

This book reminded me of my participation in Battle of the Books in elementary school. I love that Judy, Stink, and the other Bookworms are portrayed as unapologetic and unabashed book lovers. I listened to the audiobook version of this book and the narrator is phenomenal. This book is an unofficial list of "must-read children's books" - I was excited to hear some of my own childhood faves mentioned!

This is an early juvenile fiction book. Judy Moody, Book Quiz Whiz tell the story of how Judy and her brother Stink enter a book reading contest, but when their team finds out the other team has a fourth-grader, they wonder if they are up to the challenge. This book teaches kids to "do the best you can". The illustrations are very well-drawn. Chose this book because I have a love for reading.

In typical Judy Moody fashion, they all get geared up for a big book quiz show. Judy starts trying all kinds of things to get the reading done in time, but instead just misses lots of details. It was a fun book, exciting and entertaining. Children will love the next "episode" in Judy's adventures.

My 9 year old still enjoys the world of Judy and her friends. We picked this up to add to the rest of the series and we both really enjoyed it. I loved the book talks of so many children’s books. He loved the intro of a new character and the the book bow competition.

This is a wonderful story from the series Judy Moody, where Judy, her brother and some friends are preparing for a trivia contest. The story moved at a good pace and was able to hold my interest, and I like how it brings a message about how fun reading can be.
