The Beginner Traveler's Guide To Going Nomad

Rate this book
Imagine what would happen if a book about learning to travel hooked up with a brass tacks self-help book fundamentally opposed to pulling any punches. These two books really hit it off, and nine months later a new book enters the world. Words literally screaming off the pages, its sole purpose in life is to take a hold of all the wannabe travelers, shake them til they listen, and give them all the tools and motivation they need to stop making excuses and to start exploring the world and all the amazing people and places in it.

This is that book.

This hands-on guide has the steps that can take you from beginner traveler to travel badass. It’s full of motivation, inspiration, and practical advice to help you deal with the anxiety or overwhelm that can come with having never really traveled more than a few one-off trips. And because travel is just as multi-faceted as you are, it covers the physical, financial, mental, and emotional tricks to help you get traveling now.

Been wondering how the hell all those digital nomads, location independent travelers, and remote workers, travel “full-time?” Maybe you’ve thought about living that life one day, but you’re really not sure where to start. Beyond giving you the stepping stones to dive into short term and international travel, this book will show you how long-term travelers extend those tools, maximize their budgets, and to turn weeks into months...or even years...of traveling the world indefinitely.

About the author

Jason A. Robinson

5 books3 followers
Jason Robinson is borderline addicted to the ideas of self-improvement, personal growth, lifetime learning, and progress through positively-directed tough love. Through his blog, The Nomad Experiment, he writes about engaging the necessary—but scary—comfort-zone-crashing moments that can lead to life-changing new experiences, especially as it comes to travel.

At nearly 40 years old, Jason had only been to two countries outside of the U.S. He finally came to the reality that, unless he wanted to end up a cranky old man with twisted, second-hand perceptions of the world, he needed to face his fears and learn to travel on his own. After adopting an “experiment mindset” and a few years and methodical experiments later—realizing how important the growth that travel offers is—he transitioned to being a location independent nomad. He now travels nomadically and works remotely while encouraging others, through his writing and photography, to explore how they could redirect their lives to do something similar.

Above all, Jason writes to uncover the tools and motivation to encourage us all—himself included—to be better today than we were yesterday, and better tomorrow than we are today.

As a graphic designer, Jason also designs the books he writes, committed to making the most engaging experience he can for his readers.

Jason's book brought back a lot of great memories for me.

Even if you are someone who has lived the nomad life, or are already living it, this book will reinforce the path you've chosen, and fill you with joy and excitement, especially for those just embarking on their nomad journey.

I lived the nomad life for years, purposely moving around every 6-12 months, trying out different cities and countries, experiencing different jobs and living out of a backpack.

10 years later, I've got a family, a house, a car, a steady job... Would reading The Beginner Traveler's Guide to Going Nomad thus bring back poignant reminders, and longing for an old life, long gone?

In fact, it was a wonderful reminder of the joys of that life. I smiled at the little details, remembering the logistics of planning your packing, preparing your itineraries, browsing through airport maps and public transit to figure out how to navigate through a place you've never been. Not to mention, the excitement of where to go next, and it all just being so possible.

And of course, reading through the book made me think about getting back out there again. I started letting the inspiration flow and the gears to start turning... ;)

Jason focuses a lot on mindset. You learn to recognize what really matters in life, what things you need to let go (both physical and psychological), how to zone in on your priorities and put everything in the context of sustaining travel. That $9 beer could easily be 50% of a day's budget in a more affordable country. One pair of versatile shoes is likely all you need.

There are many practical tools included that help you plan and prepare, not just for a trip but for a new life. This is an interactive book that teaches you to brainstorm, ask yourself pointed questions and think through the answers, and put together the steps to get you to where you want to go.

Through it all, Jason is a great teacher and inspiration, because he's done it, and he was just as hesitant and uncertain as many of his readers may be. Jason doesn't hesitate to give you a kick in the pants if you need it, to face your fears and reconsider what you would call a risk.

If you need some direction, a helping hand, a push to get moving and real-life stories that you will relate to, pick up this book. It will get you a big step closer to turning your dreams into reality.

My wife and I have just started our nomadic journey and this book is already our go-to reference guide. Jason tells it like it is to help all of us learn from his experience to avoid or minimize the inevitable issues that will arise when traveling nomadically. I intentionally went through the book slowly to try and digest each section and even do extra research based on the tips provided. It felt like every evening I was having a conversation with my wife about some things we need to remember as we embark on this new lifestyle. Of all the books I have read on traveling nomadically, The Beginner Traveler’s Guide to Going Nomad definitely has the most actionable content.

Before I started my journey, this book was like boot camp for a wanna-be Nomad.
This book galvanized my commitment as I minimized my life and released the chains of home ownership/rental.
Once I launched into the unknown, this book directed my path.
When I fell on my face and was nearly stranded overseas, this book (not so gently) kicked me in the ass, helped me get over myself, and get back on the road.

In a cheesy, near-quote of the immortal Paul Simon, "Here's to you, Mr. Robinson!"

Thank you for shining the light for a new frontier! I'll see you on the road.

As soon as I picked up Jason’s book, I literally couldn’t put it down. He has found a way to perfectly blend the straight-talking “it’s time to get out of your own way” hard truths with deeper, thought-provoking moments that will inspire you to your core, page after page.

While it’s aimed primarily at new or less-experienced travellers, there’s so much in this book for those of us who’ve travelled a little more extensively, yet still crave new ideas for ways to travel even further across this beautiful world of ours.

Jason’s brave, honest and upfront writing style is as unique as it is captivating and his stories throughout are incredibly inspiring. It’s the kind of book you can read once, then go back to reread all the good bits over and over again.

So, get ready to cast your fears aside and confront what’s really holding you back from chasing your dreams. Don’t waste another moment and read this…like right now!
