Middle Falls Time Travel #13

The Stubborn Lives of Hart Tanner

Rate this book
Hart Tanner is a con man. A grifter who enjoys gaming people as much as does whatever ill-gotten gains he might receive.

When he dies an embarrassing, pain-riddled death, he is beyond surprised to wake up at an earlier point in his life with all memories still intact.

A con man with access to life after life with no real consequences, why would he ever change the way he lives?

But Hart Tanner does change. No matter how stubbornly he clings to his own resistance.

The Stubborn Lives of Hart Tanner is the thirteenth book in the Middle Falls Time Travel series. Like all Middle Falls books, it can be read as a standalone novel or as part of the series. It will be available as an audio book in early 2021 from Podium Publishing.

What a fun read. It wasn't super long but it still felt like a slow burn. And I absolutely loved the ending, it was perfect!!

I received a free preview copy of this book.

Inmon never disappoints, especially with his Middle Falls books. It's interesting how he can put different characters in the same situation and keep it fresh every time because it really is all about the character's growth. The character in this book, "Tanner Hart," experienced tremendous growth... from a low-life con-man to a

This is the best book I've read in a long time. I knew it would be. I made the mistake of starting this book on a Thursday night (in to Friday morning) and I wasn't able to put it down until four or five in the morning. I just finished it off tonight and that's why I'm awake and gorging at 3 am writing this review. I think I want to go back and re-read some of the early Middle Falls books soon. It's been long enough that I won't remember what happens with some of them.

Still playing catch up with my favorites since my mental health has been yo-yoing for awhile.. this made sense in my head but I didn't want it to affect my favorites ya know?
----

Was as annoyed at Hart as I'd thought I'd be, it was neat (can't think of a better word right now ) to watch him grow and change life to life and find happiness and trust at his own pace.

The parts with had me smiling, laughing, and some crying. Some of my favorite parts of the story was the bond between these two

Miss having more time to read but don't regret taking my time with this one:).

Disclosure: I downloaded this book for free, have purchased a number of previous books by the author, and am posting an honest review of this work.

This is the 13th and one of the best in the Middle Falls Time Travel series, all of which I have now read! It was a bit slower read than most of the books in the series for me, but I picked up the pace for the second half of the work.

Hart Tanner is a grifter and it is despicable how he treats most people, but then again, his mother damaged him greatly and taught him how to grift.

He dies a tragic death and then relives his life multiple times, sometimes making small changes, sometimes greater ones.

Towards the end of the book, he finds love, in a It is easy to relate to this.

I liked the way (as in many time-travel books), Hart used his knowledge of future sporting events to become very wealthy.

Hart Tanner goes from con man to philanthropist, and from a loner to a loving father in this well-written, heartwarming novel.

I recommend this book—and all 13 in the series!

How great...

To go back to Middle Falls. Where does this book rank with all the others? At first, I didn’t like Hart Tanner, but he really grew on me. The book ends up near the top of the list. If you’ve gotten this far in the series, you won’t be disappointed. Now I just have to sit and wait for the next one.

I have to say that this book made me feel like there is something really special about starting again or getting second chances. Whether you're starting again after a failed relationship or business, there's beauty in picking up the pieces and going for your best version... no matter how much time or tries it takes. It also made me realize that life is very much improved when you surround yourself with real friends and a pet.

I loved this book, as I have loved every book in the series. I thought his last book ("The Many Short Lives of Charles Waters") was the last in the series. Happily, that seems not to be the case.

Mr. Inmon is such an excellent writer; he just pulls you along in an engrossing story. You really care about this character, all the characters actually (except that visiting cop in Las Vegas ;-) I couldn't put the book down; I just had to see what he was going to do in his next life. Can't wait for the next one, and the next one, and....

Book 13 of the Middle Falls Time Travel series… I have never stuck with a series this long. Usually I lose interest after the first couple of books but Shawn Inman’s ability to develop his characters and create an entirely different story for each character keeps me coming back again and again. The way Inman subtly mingles the characters from book to book is intriguing to say the least. I can’t imagine anyone reading this series and not loving it.

Shawn Inmon – Middle Falls Time Travel Series – The Stubborn Lives of Hart Tanner, Bk 13 – Reviewed 2/2/21 – Read 12/20/20

Life of the grifter turns out different in the end, for the better!

Hart Tanner had a fairly rough life starting out. His dad was gone, and his mom kept having boyfriends that visited. Over time he realized that that was where his mom was getting the money to pay for rent and food. So, Tanner grew up moving every time she could not afford to pay the rent again. As he grew older, the new town, the new friends, the new school, and the new bullies finally got to him and he had had enough! The next time his mom came in and told him it is time to pack again, he just stood up and stated, “Not this time, I am staying!” Here was when he got his first place and his girlfriend moved in. Not that things started going great, as Hart had been taught the finer things in life, like how to get things for nothing, with graft.

Tanner spent his first life, living from others. As he got older, he started having pain that racked his body, but he just kept putting it off. When it became incredibly intolerable, he knew he needed to do something, but this type of life did not come with health insurance. Hart just dealt a new hand. He robbed a bank and told the teller where he was going, so he would be arrested, figuring that the state could pay to make him well again.

And the story begins…

What did I like? I have read a few of the other reviews about some of Shawn’s books and some are remarkable. Others just state the facts, but there is one thing that runs through them from the first book to this one, and that is that they just keep getting better and better. I will have to agree with that statement. I know that writing is a hard job, not just coming up with the plot, but figuring out who will be who, and what they are going to be doing. Oh, and let us not forget the part about how it ends and ties everything together. Every one of the books in this series has been remarkable and has become better than the last, but each has become one of my favorite reads. Individually they all have these wonderful life lessons in them that we mortals certainly should think about, what could I do to make my life better, and who can I help along the way? It does not have to be like major things, donating millions to others, but just being kind and thoughtful to others. Well, donating millions would be good, but how many of us have those? LOL

What will you like? Interesting, emotional, mysterious, and enjoyable. Those are just a few of the adjectives that I would use to describe this book. The storyline will touch your heart, give you a few laughs, and for some will even make you cry, like me! The learning curve for Hart comes hard for him to understand, and finally, it hits him like a ton of bricks. What life should give a person, and what that person can give back. But the best part was learning how to love in a way that only a pet lover and father can do. I know that I cried a ton of tears so I would recommend having tissues handy and be ready for an incredible read.

Another great narrator, and another feel-good story.

This is a much shorter first life, but it makes up for it in the repeats. Like Rebecca Wright's story, we start out with a character who is in need of reform. Also like Rebecca's story, the primary love stories are platonic rather than physical or romantic. My favorite bits were a not-exactly-new Watcher, and the friends the MC eventually picks up, including a furry one.

Maybe the best one yet!

All the books in this series are so great and thoughtful... But I think what I like most is that I look forward to reading them. I try to drag them out and read them more slowly, but it's too difficult. Great writer, great books... I also really enjoyed the Alex Hawk books, though... I'm really amazed at how prolific this author is at this level of quality reading.

I can't believe I've read 13 books in a series and I'm not only not bored yet, I can't wait to meet the next protagonist. This series is so unique to me, it has all the hallmarks of The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid - in that you live a whole life with the main character - except this has got the intrigue of time travel.

I sometimes find myself wishing that the lore/universe of Middle Falls would expand a little, go more into the Universal Life Centre or talk about the machine, have characters that really introduce something important to the overall MF universe or at least have some characters that really break the mould like Nathaniel Moon did. But I also know that the more of the big picture that's explained the more finite the series becomes, and I would feel a major loss if it ended. But I really hope all is concluded before The Amazing Writer life of Shawn Inmon is. Not that I expect him to stop anytime soon, it would just be devastating to not have an end - something that gives all these characters an over-arching purpose.

Hart Tanner's story really connected with me emotionally, it special in so many way. It is cathartic, moving, shocking in parts and it has a beautiful conclusion. I finished it yesterday but I still feel tearful thinking about it. To say Hart was unlikable in the beginning is an understatement, but when you understand what he's been through and all he needed was the right kind of love, it makes you all smushy inside.

I think the brilliant thing about being behind, is I have a chance to look at these new characters and theorise about who these people are and who they will become. I never get it right but that is what is so intriguing about it, they are cardboard in my head and then I start a book and they become real. So real that I really feel like I know them personally, which is rare for me with reading. Also MUSHU!!! When I saw Shawn had added a dog time traveller, I thought 'how an earth can that work?' but after being introduced to the gorgeous bundle of fur in this story, I am very eager to read his side of the story. It is a Christmas tale (tail) though, so I'm going to wait until the festive season arrives to delve into that one.

Anyway, though I told you the long of it already, long story short - It's a keeper!

From grifter to wealthy drifter

Hart Tanner’s story starts off as a broke and aging grifter, conning others all the way up to his last days. But the last con of getting free healthcare in a state prison is too late in the making to do much good.

He’s a goner until life drop kicks him into a time traveling reboot to his younger days.

Yoo hoo! The con is back on!

(Spoilers ahead.)

That is until he gets beat up to an inch of his life by one of his marks who turns out to be an out of town cop with his own sense of justice.

After a couple of more bad turns in subsequent soul traveling life reboots, Hart decides to go straight. More or less. A few well placed bets builds the nest egg to buy a business here and a business there. That grows with the help of a particularly efficient manager.

He goes from grifter to a kind of drifter in wealth made more by foreknowledge of the future than applied talent.

Through it, Hart Tanner’s growth is slow. Intimacy is a foreign concept until a dog enters into the picture. It’s not intimacy, but it is companionship, something Hart never experienced before.

When he gets stuck creating grooves of repetition life after life by living around the arrival and departure of his dog, he gets some help from his Watcher who is Charles, the numbers guy actuary of a preceding book in the series. Put a baby in the mix and Hart definitely gets dropped kicked in a new direction.

It’s a good story. It would’ve been better had we been able to spend more time exploring Hart’s changes through fatherhood. Under stress, would he be tempted to con his daughter in order to manipulate certain behaviors? Or how would he use his street smarts of lives gone by to handle troubles with teachers? Rather than delve into the meat of that, it was handled at arms length and looked at it through a glossy lens.

Too bad. Oh well.

It’s still a solid 4 star read even though Hart Tanner’s story is not as memorable as others in the Middle Falls soul traveling realm. You do get to revisit some past characters and the metaphysical aspect of the entire series is in good form.

Spoilers for The Stubborn Lives of Hart Tanner.

I love this series, and this book is no exception. I try to call it like it is, and the books I haven’t loved completely are reviewed honestly, so when I say Mr. Inmon hits it out of the park, I mean it.

A major strength of the series as a whole is Mr. Inmon is able to take advantage of the span of time, with most books taking place over decades of repeated resets of life and zoom in on particular days and moments and zoom back out into quickly moving narration, so that over the course of 275 pages, I’ve consistently had a full and complete journey where the beginning seems very far removed.

As with many prior characters, they’re vastly different people with different priorities. Some characters tried desperately to save one life only to find it was beyond their control, and their focus needed to be on someone being overshadowed in plain sight. In this story of Hart Tanner, you see that during the robbery scenes, where Hart initially has very little compassion for any character other than himself, and despite changing enormously by the end, very close to the end of the narration, despite some time jumps, has little capacity to truly love.

There is no romance in this one. None remotely. I give respect that these stories aren’t carbon copies of each other. Romance is certainly important elsewhere.

Jillian, Nancy, David and Helen are strong characters throughout, but honestly, Mushu absolutely dominates this book for me. It’s forever the one with Mushu in it. What a wonderful character and what a wonderful journey for those two.

Well, I finally opened this up, I was putting it off as long as possible because I love Middle Falls books. This one, as well as many of the 13 Middle Falls adventures, made me cry. After reading the fourth Alex Hawk adventure, I said time to go to Middle Falls again. I do this on purpose so I have a couple of Shawn Inmon books to read one after the other. Hart Tanner was certainly a good one, I especially loved the ending when he got to the all white room. Wonderful, made me cry more. One thing I have noticed though, lately it seems the regeneration of Middle Falls residents seem to be entering into many multiple start-overs. Guess it just takes some people longer to figure out Love covers many things in our lives, and the more we share the better things are for us. Showing and sharing love is the one thing that can define all of us. "Love one another as I have loved you" a command given to us by our LORD proven to be the best medicine for a healthy heart and life. Here I sit once again, waiting for the next installment of Middle Falls living.

I am very grateful that Shawn Inmon seems to be an incredibly proficient author and keeps pouring them out! I hope he never abandons the Middle Falls universe. I am also enjoying the Alex Hawk Series as well. Each of these books is a stand alone book but I think its best to start with book one because there are references to older books and some of the characters do impact them in the book. You could absolutely read them in any order you want and maybe even enjoy an earlier book in a different way by finding this person that impacted an earlier story for you. My only concern with his books is how often the people commit suicide to start their lives over, if suicide is a trigger for you then this series is not for you. #shawninmon #middlefallstimetravel

Back to Middle Falls ... I'll admit, I almost gave up on the first book in the series (there were just portions where the writing felt weird and juvenile) but I stuck it out and got sucked into this word. The possibilities of reliving a life, making different choices ... there is just something intriguing about that!

Here - Hart Tanner has lived a full life, not a good life. After an original reset to about eight years old, he begins his multiple lives in his early 20s. Will he thwart a bank robbery that ended in four fatalities or will he head to Vegas to resume his grifter ways? Is there anyone, or anything (a dog perhaps) that will make him rethink the direction of his multiple lives?

This had a very satisfactory circle - had a few characters recognizable from previous stories, the peek at the Life Center.

Books 1-12 have been included in AudiblePlus, so no cost beyond the membership. During a sale, I went ahead and purchased this one and the next (#14) as well as one of the bitty books.

Hart Tanner's last con is to rob a bank go and go to the diner next door to be caught. He's having pains and wants the prison system to take care of him. Unfortunately for Hart he waited too long and he is just in time for hospice. He wakes up in 1966 in his young body and starts using the con artist tricks he used in his original life.

This started out hard to read with Hart being so shady. It gets better once he starts using his knowledge of the future rather than preying on people to make a living. In his successive lives he starts progressing. The last half of the book is fantastic. Overall 4.9 stars.

This is a new author for me, but I don't know how I missed him!

I started with Book 14, and then this story. The characters are so real that I either feel like I know them, or want to know them. Mushu was loving and such an integral part of the story. I admit I was quite sniffly at the end of the book, knowing Hart wouldn't get a do-over. It was great to have some characters appear from the past, even Hart's evil mother. I'm loving this series, and am glad to have so many more stories to look forward to.

Fans of this series will have shared my joy of discovering that Shawn Inmon had written another book. Despite it being the thirteenth in the series he manages to keep it fresh and this may well be the best yet. Hart Tanner was a grifter in his first life and he eventually did move away from this lifestyle, in later lives, but never really found true happiness. Not giving much away in saying that he finally does, however it is both unexpected and a delight to follow his path on that journal.

I didn't think I would

I get surprised reading these books. Sometimes I see the synopsis and I think "No I don't think that I want to read about a bad guy". Then I see them grow and change . They begin to make use of the lives they have been given and I end up good crying. I like the voice of the writer, that comes through his words. So I didn't think I would like a story about a gritter and of course, in the end I loved it.

I've read through to book 15 of this series to date. Although I found some stronger than others, and I do think listening to them back to back they become a bit formulaic, but in spite of all that these stories are like crack. You can't eat just one. Once you fall into this world you will feel like one of these characters living groundhog-day lives, over and over trying to get it right.

But it will be inescapable.

The best

This is the BEST one thus far. I loved the transformation of Harts life. Grifter, major con artist, emotionally/physically abused by his family, killed by robbers, paralyzed, and then Jillian changed his life FOREVER. His 1st love was Mushu, a rescue dog. Then the family unit of two became three. Sad about Miranda. The end was so sweet. I don’t get too emotional in my reading but the ending was very touching. Great job Shawn!

Another great visit to Middle Falls. Every character so has had a second chance (or more) at life and it’s fascinating to see what each does with it. Hart Tanner is a con artist and grifter. As I started reading I wondered what could be done to redeem a character who so clearly didn’t want to be fixed. By the end, of course, his stubborn nature has been overcome. My favorite character was his dog.

Middle Falls!

I just can’t get enough of these books. Loved how Hart evolved through his lives. How he gave to the community and to Sandy. Which wasn’t mentioned in his last life…. I knew when he went to look for a dog, it would be Mushu. A little bothered by there fact that when Thomas asked Jillian to partner up with him it was called “ Weaver and Hart “. Wouldn’t it be “Weaver and Tanner?” Anya’s still such a great book. On to the next!

I just love this series

I think I have read every one of the books in this series. I have immensely enjoyed them all and this latest book certainly didn't disappoint. My only criticism would be that several times it made me come close to crying! Seriously, a lovely book and I am looking forward to the next installment from Middle Falls.

Who could love a con man

Well, this reader could, but admittedly not at first. But when Hart starts to live his life over and over again, he starts to change and the quality of his life changes.

Before too long, I was rooting for him and I think he's one of my favorite characters in the Middle Falls time travel series (ps - partly because of a dog!)
