Long before she was queen, Deelie was a lonely young cyren. Her sisters were away fighting in the king's army, her mother didn't seem to care about her, and the other kids in her class already had their own friends. But when Cerys, another young cyren is friendly to her, everything changes.

Review for “A Song in the Deep” by Helen Scheuerer

It’s the first short story from the “Cyren Queen Origins” series written by Helen Scheuerer. The story focuses Deelie’s life before she became queen of the cyrens.
The world created by the author is similar to “A Game of Thrones” from the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series by George R. R. Martin. It is also a different version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” because the mermaids are called “cyrens”, have a few traits of sea monsters like the Creature from the Black Lagoon due to the fact that they got legs and walk around like humans do, and are not naïve like the main character in the fairy tale.
Despite being underwater, Saddoriel is the opposite of Atlantis and Seaquestria from the My Little Pony The Movie (2017) because the inhabitants use human bones to build different things and the female cyrens behave more like Amazons and Spartans.
Friendship, loyalty, courage, fear, self-discovery, curiosity, survival, loneliness, responsibility and many other themes are discussed within the pages of this book. Mrs. Scheuerer leaves the readers in suspense at the ending of the story.
There are a few things with a symbolic meaning namely water – wisdom, power, grace, music, chaos, motion, transformation; music – expression of deep emotions and feelings, a powerful weapon and energy source in Saddoriel; the laceflower – protection, dream catcher, an angel’s wings; the fern – family, a new beginning, a hope for future generations, humility, sincerity, eternal youth, good luck; the weeping willow – survival in challenging conditions, a new life; moss – charity and maternal love.
Along with Katie Jenkins, Todd Fahnestock, Eileen Mueller, Richard H. Stephens, Alisha Klapheke, Laura Daleo, B. K. Boes, Nicole Zoltack, A. G. Roemmers, Anabel Bright, Sarah K. L. Wilson, C. L. Schneider and J. R. Swiger and many others, Helen Scheuerer revolutionized young adult literature with the world she created.
I recommend the book to readers 15+ because some scenes are scary to children.

Note de subsol:

This novella is a prequel to 'A Lair of Bones' and the Curse of the Cyren Queen Series. I wish I had read this (and the other two novellas) before I started 'A Lair of Bones'. I floundered a bit at the beginning of that book and this would have given me some basis for that world. It's the story of a young Cyren, Deelie, who might be destined to be the queen but had a sad and lonely childhood. Her loneliness is alleviated when she meets Cerys, who becomes her best friend. Their adventures are outlined in this short book. Their characters are developed and their backstory is revealed. I recommend this without question to anyone who plans to read The Curse of the Cyren Queen series (which I also recommend!).

A SONG IN THE DEEP takes us far from the lands of the Oremere Chronicles to the watery realms of the Cyrens, known in the first series as the lisloiks. Here we meet Deelie, a young Cyren in classes and struggling to make friends, as war is declared, which will strip her mother and sisters from her, possibly never to return.

This short story does a good job at quickly introducing the reader to this very different world and some of its lore as well as giving a sense of stakes through a child's eyes. Friends and family gone, rather than the wider consequences of the war.

Even though it's a quick read, this is a great introduction to Talon's Reach and the core region of Saddoriel. This novella introduces Deelie, a cyren child, and the world she lives in. The character building is wonderful, they pull you in right from the start. The world building is wonderfully done, it blends seamlessly into the story. The story itself was both beautiful and a little wrenching, but definitely worth a read!

By the end of this novelette I was hooked and wanted the rest of the series to read.

I already know little Deelie is going to steal my heart and Cerys is going to cause all kinds of mischief. I can't wait to get to know these two better in the next book.

A cute and simple little edition to The Curse of The Cyren Queen series. Definitely revealed some good to know information about the main series. I would recommend reading this after reading A Lair of Bones.

Deelie finds a friend when no one wants to be her friend. A friend that beco.es like a sister to her. Who's mum becomes like a mum to her, when her own mother leaves to go to battle. when Cerys and her family leave, they take Deelie with them.

A fantastic introductory/ prequel to what I know is going to be an amazing series (already released I know).
I started with the prequels and now I’m going to start the main series.
