Cobra is an agency, established by the five principle English-speaking democracies, which operates on the fringes of legality to assassinate those who commit crimes against humanity, but are beyond the reach of the law.
Harry Bauer is Cobra’s best operative. But when Colonel Jane Harris and Brigadier Alex ‘Buddy’ Byrd call him to do a job, that job is not on the fringes of legality, it’s downright murder, pure and simple.
He is to find a civilian hiding out in remote, south-east New Mexico with a motorcycle gang, and he is to kill him. This is not a political dictator, a general guilty of genocide or a despotic tyrant. This is a private, American citizen.
If he takes the job Cobra cannot support him, provide back up or hardware, nor can they extract him if the going gets rough. If he takes it, he takes it alone.
But when Harry finds out what this man has done, and how the invisible tendrils of his evil have spread, Harry cannot decline. This is a job he must do, even though it will lead him to the very doors of death.

Wonderful, wonderful book!! It was hard to read about all the crazy stuff that some persons in our world will do with depravity! I simply can't imagine what they do, why they do and/or what they possibly get out of it. Frankly, I hope and pray that ok never will!
Harry Bauer is after a gangster Oz who is holed up in Texas. He's doing unspeakable things in a studio and Harry must find the evidence against it. In his quest, local civilians get embroiled and Harry gets wounded. Now he was to not only save his life but the civilian's as well, all when he himself working at half his potential. Story wise, not so great. There was no suspense or twist and turn. Just simple "fight with gangster and is men".
Death by Numbers Does not pay to remember previous books or you would be tempted to number how many dead people there are, I feel I must be up to 300 already, Oh well! I guess it is something to help pass the time, may be better counting sheep.
In this book and last one, Bauer kills almost all the bad guy’s minions. He gets captured and the bad guy plays with him until he turns the tables and wins in the end. Reckless and should have died a few times.
Harry Bauer is at it again, his job as an assassin, that is. Only this time there's a bit of a twist. Cobra, the highly secret organization for which Harry doesn't work (he claims to be independent) talks to Harry about a job they cannot ask him to do. It's sort of a backhanded way of asking him to take on an assignment that really isn't an assignment, and on which he'll enjoy absolutely no Cobra support. It's clear that his boss (for whom Harry doesn't really work) wants the job done, but it's up to Harry to do it or not. Since the target is a real sleazebag, a maker and peddler of child pornography, among other dastardly deeds, Harry takes the assignment (that really isn't an assignment).
The next stop for Harry is rural New Mexico. Very rural New Mexico. Extremely rural and sparsely populated New Mexico, where the only law is a corrupt County Sheriff who is based fifty miles away. To make matters worse, the guy who owns the Sheriff is Harry's target. On his first night in town, Harry winds up protecting the husband and wife owners of the town's only hotel, and gets wrapped up in their troubles for his trouble.
Harry's cover on this assignment is as a writer who trying to get away from civilization so he can concentrate. After the hotel owner helps Harry dispose of the first four or five bodies, the landlord says, "You're no writer." Well, Harry writes epitaphs, after a fashion, if that counts.
As our story unravels, Harry's mission becomes more and more entwined with his landlords and their two young and attractive daughters. You knew that had to happen. As Harry helps them, they help him, and--SPOILER ALERT--the good guys win, again.
As always with Blake Banner's Harry Bauer stories, Invisible Evil is a real page turner. I read it in one sitting, which is unusual for me. I usually spend three or four days on a novel, and this one was just as long. It was just more enthralling.
I'm speeding through this series now, 3 books in a few days. Normally, I don't spend that much time reading and I try to throw in some more serious stuff in between sessions of the "popcorn". I can recommend the series to anyone.
There are some times when the villains are a bit over the top. I've noticed also that the author made marijuana sound much more addictive and mind-bending that it actually is. So, I was glad to see that the bad guys in this one were into coke and horse. Of course, the action is always over the top in the sense that no hero could do all that in reality. But, I'll say that each step along the way is plausible, so it's only the number of miraculous victories that are only possible in fiction.
Maybe I'm sounding a bit lukewarm here. I don't mean to be. I wouldn't have gotten this far if I did not really enjoy these books and #9 was a good one. I particularly like the suspense that builds throughout about who these bad guys are and what is behind them. I've stayed up too late several nigths trying to get to the part where that is revealed. So, have fun with these. I am. And now, I'm off to bed to start #10.
An off the books job, one that Harry is on his tod for Starts of with the scenario being set out to Harry by the Brigadier and Colonel and pretty much 5 pages later Harry starts being Harry and it doesn't stop until the end There are the ubiquitous set backs that every author seems to think have to happen, to make a story interesting, but Harry keeps at it The primary target, is supposed to be some super intelligent criminal, but seems to allow his ego to overrule any logic that would let him win It's a good book and whilst it is the 9th in the series could be read as a stand alone
Blake Banner is a genius. While most of us sat around during the lock downs, Mr. Banner was typing his fingers raw to keep us all entertained. I have devoured all 9 books in rapid succession. (Insert wild applause here) Harry has depth riding right along side complete badassery (it's a word now), and at times physical and emotional vulnerability. I suppose each book could be a standalone but I recommend starting with the 1st. Thanks for writing your fingers to the bone Mr. Banner!
Harry goes after some bad guys, but he will not be backed by COBRA. He is almost killed and then needs COBRA to help clean up the mess after he kills 30 bad guys, but cannot finish off the main bad guy. This is not the Harry of previous books. The plot seems a little off in this one, he finds another desperate woman to have sex with, but there in not much of a connection created here. And the Colonel is still giving him the cold shoulder. What else is new?
Harry Bauer is on a very sensitive mission. He has to terminate someone without the help of Cobra the clandestine organization he works for. No backup, no help whatsoever. The person he,is tasked with eliminating has left the FBI high and dry. He is a very clever, highly intelligent psychopath . Feared by all he comes into contact with. What, follows is an action packed, thriller which I enjoyed immensely!!
Only one non critical grammatical error that I remember, early into the story “that that” was used when “than that” should have been used. Otherwise I loved the writing the story line and the locations. I live in Phoenix on one of the named streets, I have spent lots of time in New Mexico. Knowing the locations makes a story more interesting,at least to me. Poor Harry is a super human. I hope you enjoy as much as I did
what a ride. Having visited New Mexico, i can understand the excellent descriptions of this area in NM. The read itself was a fun ride but kind of bloody. whatever we can do to alert the public of the problems with child and family theft are well appreciated. the book did not keep me up nights with "what will happen next?" it was just "don't put it down. Are there really people out there like that? the hunter and the hunted?
I’ve followed this series since the beginning and have never found it wanting. In fact it is a series I always anxiously await the next published title.
There is a great deal going on in “Invisible Evil”. So much so that I don’t believe it can be fully enjoyed, or appreciated, unless a reader has not read its predecessor or better yet the entire series. That’s my first recommendation.
Fast moving thriller that takes Harry and Cobra away from their usual operations. An operation to remove a dangerous individual with a high IQ and many followers who has escaped justice through his criminal organisations grip on persons in positions of influence and power. What was in effect a Black Ops. Pushes Harry to the limits of his abilities to get the job done and save a close knit family. A good read.
Where Harry goes death and destruction follow and the body count goes spiralling up. There are no boundaries to stop Harry doing what he does best and unfortunately for the bad guys they think that no one will ever stop them doing what they want, that is until they meet Harry and then they don't live long enough to regret their evil deeds.Another fantastic storyline following Harry's exploits.
Poor Harry, he's so bruised and broken. He gets beaten down time after time. He has the the ladies falling all over him but it always the wrong lady. His feelings against those that harm woman and children are so strong that he goes beyond the goals that Cobra gives him. Will he ever leave this life against evil? He takes out the trash and more trash appears for him to take out! Will his body and morals ever let him have a normal life??
Blake Banner should be Bruce Banner because he’s the Hulk of Action fiction. I’ve read the entire Onegacsnd Harry Bauer series over the last month and couldn’t put any of them down. Not much sleep in the last month, but a lot of great stories. Looking forward to more. Keep them coming!
Interesting story line and I enjoyed the read, but for one person to create that much damage while being hurt so badly is hard to believe. Also to think that the bad guy is so stupid that he is going to watch someone this dangerous kill his crew and carry on a conversation is a stretch.
Several subtle layers to enjoy here. There’s the action of the plot plus there’s the rich interaction of the characters, both those characters who are unique to this book as well as the ongoing characters who are the Harry Bauer family. Superbly presented and thoroughly satisfying.
I am an unabashed fan of Harry Bauer. In this tale he showed his human physical side. He is a multidimensional person, not Superman. As is normal, his wit and life view is maintained. My only warning--the subject matter is especially dark. I do prefer a political assassinations, but that’s just me.
Hard not to like Harry, and his very real human side is on full display here. The story is sadly too close to reality for many souls, evil does exist in this world and Banner has captured it perfectly. Great story start to finish with more than one twist along the way.
Still reading the Harry Bauer books back to back, and enjoying every one of them. Still coming across (and reporting) quite a lot of typos, misspellings, and occasional grammatical mistakes. Hope my comments help improve future books and any updates tho current ones.
This could make a fine television show except no one could believe the amount of abuse Harry's body goes through. Nevertheless it is good that he manages to survives. The heroics are great and he fulfills our need for heroes with strong values who win the day. Good stoty.
I was thinking that something was always going to happen to Harry. He’s my favorite assassin after all. I like the violent dialogue he exchanges fearlessly.
I wonder if he and the col will finally come to terms. Can you make that happen Mr Blake Bauer…er…Banner?
Brilliant, well thought out plot, good stand alone novel, but not for me, once I get my teeth into a new hero I have to follow him from start to finish. Harry's adventures are hair raising and keep you on the edge of your seat. Very descriptive, great stories, highly recommended
Excellent read as always with Harry Bauer. However, I felt there were some issues with timing and such that the writer didn’t seem to take into consideration. Like we were driving for a while, then had to stop and get gas but then it only took 10-15 minutes to get back to where they came from. Just didn’t seem to wash with me but I still give it 5 Stars!
