Colette International #2

You're the One for Me

One of them had a plan. The other was clueless. Together they will discover what love really is about.

Guarded and studious, sixteen-year-old aspiring actor Zak favours being alone above all else… Except perhaps Alberto, the Italian god from Drama Club, with whom he’s secretly in love.

When their drama teacher takes the club to the French countryside to shoot a short film, Zak decides to temporarily hang his introvert hat and joins the party, confident Alberto will be cast as his love interest.

Only… By accident or by mistake, the beloved — and most likely overrated — star football player Eric is chosen to play Alberto’s part. But it cannot be! Zak hates everything about Eric. For starters, he’s not Alberto. Besides, he’s a straight jock, an impossible flirt who takes nothing seriously, and especially not Zak’s attempts to keep him at a distance.

If he wants to be seen as the professional actor he always claimed to be, and still get the chance to impress Alberto, Zak must set aside his resentment and put up with Eric and his boisterous ways, at least until filming is over.

But as time goes by, stuck in the middle of nowhere with the most popular boy at school, Zak quickly sees his opinion of Eric shift from sworn enemy to endearing new friend, and soon his feelings for him threaten to grow into something far more dangerous.

His vulnerable and inexperienced heart only a small kiss away from being shattered, Zak will have to ask himself the right questions and undergo significant changes if he hopes to obtain true love at last.

A story about friendship, self-awareness and the dangers of appearances, You're The One for Me is the second instalment in the Colette International Series, where students from an international high school in Paris navigate their tumultuous love lives. Though it isn't necessary to have read the first volume beforehand, it's still recommended to get the full reading experience.

Zak has A Big Plan. He’s going to get one of two lead roles in his high school’s short film and his crush (Alberto) will get the other and they’re going to fall in love and everything will be perfect! But oh no! Troy Bolton over here (Eric) stole Alberto’s role!! He already has sports AND he’s popular - why on earth does he need to crash the drama club too?!?! Disaster! Or…is it?😉

He looked so radiant that it explained why the sun decided to remain hidden by the clouds this morning.

You’re the one for me is an effortlessly funny and charming story that had me in its clutches for all 540 pages. It’s a long one but it doesn’t feel like it! And in a shocking turn of events I found myself saying hmmm actually could I maybe have another 540 pages of Zak and Eric??? As a treat! Eric is the most golden retriever character to ever golden retriever. He even loves bouncing a tennis ball around. 😂🥰 He’s a joy to read about. His sunshiney disposition works so well with our sarcastic, hilarious, often moody but so easy to love narrator that is Zak. They have endless chemistry and never have I ever been so giddy reading an opposites attract YA romance. At one point Eric kept putting flowers in Zak’s hair and shoes. :’) There’s endless cuteness, high school drama, an extremely fun and engaging plot with side characters that I adored so deeply. Books rarely make me laugh out loud but I could not stop laughing with this one!!! And to make it even better they’re filming the short film in the French countryside and the setting is so beautifully written. This worked especially well for me because I love clueless mcs that have no idea someone has a crush on them (I mean, I’ve read a billion Anyta Sunday books!!!). What a treasure this book is.💙 And just a quick little side note - it takes place in 2010! I was wondering about the abundance of iPod talk and alas at 96%, I got my answer!

“So what if I’m shaking…” Though his eyes were glazed, they were serious. “I’ve waited a long time to get you.”

Warm. It felt warm, just thinking of him.

God, it's like this book was made for me. For starters, I am utterly drawn to the concept of a character being too introverted and hung up on their own issues so they don't realize the friends they do have and the people that like them, especially when said character ends up catching the heart of a big ball of sunshine, and they don't even realize it! And it's over 500 pages of this! It's like everything I ever wanted

I loved Zak, I ADORED Eric (he really is such a puppy omg), I loved Arthur and Camille, and hell I even grew to love Alberto and his... Alberto-ness. Honestly I don't even know what to say other than I just loved this book. Everything from the characters to the plot to everything else... I just adored it. It's over 500 pages but it never felt like a slog or chore to read.

Slight spoilers, but one thing I loved was that

I'm frustrated because I loved this book SO much but I'm blanking on more to say, it's just fucking good. With just these two books, Zelda French has already hooked me good. I can't believe she just has only two books published, they're both so fun and heartwarming and witty, yet so criminally under the radar. I wish more people knew about them because they're SO good. AND I can't wait for the next for the next book in the series. (PLEASE tell me it's about Alberto, I gotta know what's going on with that weirdo)

one of the best grumpy/sunshine couples I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. such a cute story but why'd it have to turn so unrealistic suddenly😭. could have done without the Zak x Alberto bits too to be honest. first of all, i thought it was plain unnecessary and second of all, it reduced his interactions with Eric so I'm against it on principle.

He could have my iPod and his way with my ass, as long as he stayed by my side tonight.
how does one think they're still 'just friends' after thinking this🤦‍♀️. Zak, you absolutely clueless grump.

p.s. people who title chapters have way too much time on their hands🥸.

This is one of the books you just can't stop reading, but also a book you just don’t want to be over. It has over five hundred pages, but I could have easily read another five hundred pages of it. It’s never boring or dragging on and on. The main plot is of course the love story of Zak and Eric, but there’s a lot more going on. An interesting plot beside the romance and well-elaborated and amiable side characters that are not just mere plot devices. There’s a film shooting in the French countryside, where our characters go on an excursion, and reading about it feels like being on a beautiful vacation yourself.

This is the second book in a series, but they are only loosely related. I still recommend reading them in the right order, because otherwise a lot of the fun is lost. While the basic idea of both books is principally the same, the two books couldn’t be any more different. This is, of course, because of the different setting. But also because the main characters are very different. I remember how I struggled with the first book because it felt like a joke and I couldn’t tell if it is bad writing or if the author is crazy or if it’s all on purpose. Well, it’s the latter, because Louis, the main character of the first book, is some sort of mental. Fun fact, it's even acknowledged in this book. Whereas Zak, the main character of this book, is a very down-to-earth kind of guy. He’s so much more relatable and, well, his struggles are real ones. Every time I felt annoyed or frustrated with him, it was like being annoyed or frustrated with my sixteen year old self.

I really enjoyed reading this book from the first sentence to the very last one. It has an exciting and heartfelt story and loveable characters. I’m glad there will be at least two more books in this series and can’t wait for them to be released.

Phew , that was a long book!!! I enjoyed it immensely though, because it had one of the cutest grumpy/sunshine trope ever!! Gosh I loved their banter , I loved the witty writing , I loved the kids but I swear to God I wanted to throttle them !! They were so oblivious!! 🤣 Look, I don’t read YA as I mentioned before because I’m too cynical for doe-eyes puppy love stories lol so I’m usually very annoyed by the angst due to lack of communication (which is a typical “pining” scenario for YA novels) but these guys here were freaking adorable. There was such a gentleness in them and in their interactions. They seem so real and authentic. 😍
Two things bothered me however and that was that I would have liked Eric’s POV because I loved him and that it was too freaking long. 200 pages too long to be more specific. 550 pages for low angst YA rom-com was OTT.
I would love a non YA book from this author because I really REALLY like their writing.

“There’s a little madness in the act of letting go. Of letting oneself love and be loved, of treading the same uncertain path billions have trodden before, hoping they will best its trials, emerge victorious, their love the only one to be undying and true.”

“I slowly crawled into his arms and rested my cheek against his chest. The frantic beating of his heart was a coded message, a testimony of his affection for me. And I remember thinking… this was how it felt. Being adored. Being craved. I wanted to plunge my fingers into his chest and pluck out his heart to stick it close to my ear. “

4.25 ✨️ I really enjoyed this! The writing style is definitely one of a kind and that coupled with the length of the book meant that it took me a little while to get into it, but once I was into it I couldn't stop reading! Eric = sunshine personified. Loved him. Adorable.
I assume I was meant to be intrigued by Alberto, but I just didn't feel the draw. I'd say that's the only thing I didn't *love* about this. Otherwise, I loved reading this.

Did I just fall in love with two beautiful sixteen year old boys? Yes, Yes, I sooooo did🥺🤌✨

One of the best grumpy- sunshine pair everrrr!!!

And this was a YA book 500 pages long with no sex scenes and I just ate it up in a day🤧🫶

I JUST LOVED LOVED LOVED IT. 😭💌

Honestly speaking, isse phle, I used to read MM for the sex scenes because I found MM sex scenes SUPER HOT or for the cute fluff like I loved watching two men falling in love and being all soft for each other but after, reading these YA books , I am shocked that I can feel so so happy and fluffy and be all giggly and obsessed with 16 year old boys😭🤌

Zak and Eric are everythinggg🫶

My precious boys💌🥺✨🤝

✨MUST READ.✨

reread 01/2023
I enjoyed this a lot the second time, maybe even more than the first time, knowing more about Eric.
Although it's longer than similar ya books, it was fitting with 16 year old Zac's character.. every interaction, every glance, had to be analysed, it was wonderful.
Although it's beennow many decades ago, I remember myself at 16 obsessing over my crush's every move and word, haha.
5 stars.

Reading a sequel to a book I love is always a gamble, but I love sequels that have a narrating main character who is different from the previous book's main character.
Zac was so used to being alone that he lived in his own head and it took him forever to read his friends' and classmates' characters and intentions. I loved this about him. He was sweet, unsecure and melodramatic, but because of his unability to read Eric's intentions I doubtet them very long, too.
After finishing this book I luckily read Eric's Secret Diary (from the author's homepage) and finally I understood Eric, too.
Maybe it was just me having a bit of a problem to connect to Eric because of the language? Where there subtle indications of Eric's feelings? I don't know. Since I'll definitely reread the series I'll get to experience it all again, and for now I'm happy with how things turned out to be.
With the addition of Eric's Secret Diary, You're The One For Me feels complete to me, and gets 5 stars.

Another cute couple from Colette International school!

The setting for this one is a magical summer in the French countryside. It has so many great characters and scenes set up for romance. The narration envelopes the reader until you feel like you’re watching a French film at times. It has magical moments, artsy flair, and a sense of teen abandon.

It also has the feel of a meandering French film and it went on too many pages without purpose that I worried there would be no ending, like too many French art films. I’m glad this one landed in a happy place because I wanted it to, for Zak and Eric’s sake.

I do feel over a hundred pages were repetitive notions. I didn’t need to be retold about how Alberto has no emotions. I got it. Or to have Eric be impulsive and touch people. Or to have Zak hide from people. I got it. I was engrossed some of the time, bored to the task of finishing this at others. Let’s mention the French film farce of that end obstacle course race! Ridiculous. Funny but how far shall I suspend belief?

Zak and Eric in the countryside on a moped. Them in a pond/lake. Them at the end of that ridiculous race. Those were the moments this book brought utter joy.

So there's this jock Eric and this nerd Zack, and one of them hates the other. The movie they are in has them cast as ill-fated lovers.

Art imitates life, right? Well, Yes, and then, No.

The gift of this novel is its characters, who are irrepressible, in good and bad ways. But who change before our eyes under the spell they place each other under. Love really does blossom, and right before our eyes. The magic is that we see it happening, even before they do.

But owwww, it takes so damn long to reveal itself (my quibble) . . . and thus, only 4*s.

Zelda French’s You’re The One For Me, the second book in her Colette International series, is a sweet YA novel peopled with wonderful characters and told from the PoV of one of the protagonists, Zak (Zakaria) Khoutifa. The other main character, Eric Tucker- Régnier, is almost too charmingly complicated to be believed. In the end, though, they’re both simply delightful teens.

French’s multiple secondary characters are well developed and clearly add to the charm of the novel.

The problem with You’re The One For Me is its length. At 552 pages, it was about 350 pages too long for me, and if I can recall my teen years accurately, far too long to have held my attention at that time.

That's unfortunate, because the story's messages of self-awareness, acceptance, diversity, inclusion, and love being love are exactly the messages teens should be reading.

There is nothing about this book that isn't perfection. It uses the traditional set-up of the school play to create an enemies to more story. It has two characters who are diametric opposites. Zak is the introvert/loner and Eric is the jock/most popular guy in school. Characters from the delightful first book reappear. It is set in the French countryside. All of these combined with an author who makes these young people sound exactly the right age, not adults in kids' bodies make for a delightful read to get totally absorbed in.

I'M GOING TO DIE OF THEIR SWEETNESS. I LOVED EVERYTHING, IT WAS PERFECT. All the characters made the whole story feel so close and warm. It was like a high school sitcom, and I really needed a book like this. They're so stupid and so in love, I can't stand it, they're so cute

Big downgrade from previous book. Cringey/cheesey dialogue at times. The author learned a new word “nape” and a new phrase “eyes wide” and proceeded to use them 86 times.
Alberto is one of the worst characters I’ve ever had the misfortune to read about

I was curious when this came up as a book available for review. I’d really enjoyed Anna and the French Kiss and thought a M/M variation on that theme might be a lot of fun.

I also sometimes enjoy young adult romances that are presented from a single character POV. It’s a bit like listening to a complaining young friend, and helps one maintain the perspective of a world where pretty much everything revolves around you. It’s sometimes fun to see the foibles that the narrator misses in himself, and in some way it makes them more endearing.

It’s also relatively low angst… sure the youngster will be “inconsolably crushed” if the “crush de jour” doesn’t work out but it’s no surprise to us “sadder but wiser” folks, that young hearts heal quickly.

That said, the single character POV can be hard to maintain. If that single character is as myopic as 16 year old clueless Zak here is… double that. It actually made the book a bit frustrating toward the middle. Even the most amenable reader eventually runs out of patience.

Several other early reviewers have criticized this book as being a bit long. While I never found it to be boring, it was a bit frustrating at spots. This is the second book in a series and I wondered (more than once) if the parts that dragged weren’t at least in part due to my not having read the first part. I also speculated as to whether it might have improved the book to have known what the other characters were thinking (and in some cases doing.) Seeing parts of this story unfold from Eric’s POV might have made this more interesting but would have made the whole “it’s finally dawning on the dope” epiphany part less satisfying. Even seeing parts from Alberto’s or even Arthur’s POV might have been fun. As it is, Zac was a bit of an odd choice for the narrator as he’s not the most interesting and certainly the least insightful.

Still the book features a number of characters that you’ll enjoy spending time with. Though there are also a few you’d just like grab by the shoulders and shake a bit.

Over the years I’ve seen a good number of French films. This book had the pacing and feel of some of my favorites of those. This title evokes a bit of the magic found in the book Call Me By Your Name with a bit of the whimsy of the film Côte d’Azur (2005) Adding to this “continental feel” is that the author’s native language is not English. While her British English sometimes confused this mid-western raised “Yank”, it also added to the atmosphere.

This might be the perfect book to read on a trip or a beach weekend. It has that relaxed pace, and the characters are certainly worth spending a “weekend in the country” with. However, given that the protagonist is barely legal don’t expect anything too steamy.

After reading You're The One For Me all I can say is, it's just so beautiful.

It may be long, it may be a slowwww burn, but it's perfect this way. I loved how the story evolved, how Zak found the best of friends and fell in love, and the fact that it wasn't easy or immediate for him to realize it and act on it was just more realistic.

And it was so much fun, I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. I love how crazy they all are. And I love Eric and his bees with furry pajamas, he's so happy and carefree, he's just too adorable. And how could I not adore Zak too, an overdramatic introvert who reads BL and hides them under his bed? And Camille and Arthur are wonderful (I love friend squads).
This is the second book of Colette International but you can read it as a standalone since these I just mentioned are all brand new characters, but if you've read I Want To Kiss You In Public already then you'll be happy like me to meet again Michael and Louis! And I'm glad I also got to see Yasmine as an amazing big sister.

This was also a story full of little mysteries, which drove me crazy but thankfully they all got solved in the end, except for Alberto! He's so mysterious! He's a very interesting character. I really really would like to see him lose his cool.

But amidst all the craziness and humor there were some pretty emotional parts too. I was so invested in Zak's feelings that while reading some parts I had tears in my eyes.

In the end this book portrays perfectly the difference between a love that's idealized and has no substance and the real deal, which is spontaneous and joyful and true.

Some out of context thoughts (so I don't spoiler):
The obstacle race part at the end is pure gold.
My summer of love and woe, I would really like to see that movie.

I also really enjoyed the internationality element, which is unusal and refreshing (and most importantly not stereotyped)

I can't think of anything else to say right now except for, if you like sweet and angsty teenage drama, love stories with some bees and apples, many brownies, and only one lake/pond, all of which narrated with a snarky and engaging writing, then this book is for you!

I’ve just finished rereading this book for the second time - so yeah, maybe it’s high time I left a review - what can I say? I hate leaving reviews, but sometimes I have to. This book deserves it.

First things first, I had enjoyed “I want to kiss you in public” so much that when I saw Zelda had published another book I didn’t even read the blurb before buying it. 10/10 would recommend not reading the blurb because I had no idea Zak was supposed to end up with Eric and thus, for the first 30 (?) pages of the book, I was 100% sure Zak would end up dating Charles Henry (yes, I’m not joking). I didn’t even know there was an Eric in this book!!! Imagine my face when Eric was casted in the movie and I immediately went “who the fuck is Eric?” just like Zak.

That being said, I’m usually not a big fan of books with love triangles because either I end up rooting for the wrong person (yes, I’m still traumatised by Twilight, hashtag Team Jacob forever) or I wish they could just be happy together in a polyamorous relationship. And yet this time I really enjoyed Zak’s story. His internal conflict was honest and stemmed from a real dilemma (little spoiler: aka it wasn’t the old trite “I’m attracted to two people both of whom have pros and cons and I can’t decide between them”).

I usually wouldn’t touch long books with a ten foot pole, but this book read like a fanfiction and I couldn’t put it down. Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for books where the characters are cluessly pining for each other, but I really enjoyed the angst-y parts and the happy ending.

I just loved it. That’s it. I loved it.

(And this is why I rarely post reviews)

The story is about Zac, an anxious teen from Tunisia who wants to become an actor. He's also gay and he has a crush on Alberto, a boy from Italy with whom he is sharing Drama class. When the Drama kids take a trip to the countryside to shoot a short movie, Zac becomes friends with the most popular boy in school, Eric, who's also a star football player. A love triangle ensues and lasts until the end of the book.

My Critiques
1. Despite being easy to read, I feel like the book drags on a tad too long. Also, the last part of the book breaks the kind of style of the rest of the book. it all gets a little comedic and bizarre when Eric's dad races with Zac in a kiddy race on who gets to talk to Eric first. I also would've liked to see more of Eric's and Zac's relationship.
2. Zac was a bit too anxious at times and a bit too oblivious. I get that's supposed to be part of who he's supposed to be, but it got irritating at times to read from his perspective.
3. Despite being portrayed as somewhat of a bad guy, I liked Alberto and I felt like he was done dirty by making him very one-dimensional. I feel like the story would have been better if his character would've been fleshed out a bit more. Due to the way he was written, the whole plot was obvious from the start. I knew Zac would never end up with Alberto since he's 'soul-less'.

What I liked
1. I love the banter between Zac and Eric. Even though the book drags on a bit here and there, the moments between Zac and Eric were all fun.
2. The side characters were okay, but not really noticeable that much. Except for Yasmine, who's great.

You're the One for Me is such a sweet coming of age story with all of the drama that comes with a young introverted man, Zak, who obsesses with the beautiful Alberto, a fellow student at the prestigious Collette School that the both attend. Zak takes pain to keep to himself and he wears it as a badge of his seriousness to apply himself to his five year plan to become a known actor. The one exception to his focused plan is that he is fascinated with Alberto, a mysterious, physically attractive French student that he cannot bring himself to approach because Zak is painfully shy. However, his plan is to be cast in scene with Alberto so that Alberto can see that they are meant to be together. That is not how things work out. Instead he is paired with Eric, a hottie footballer that goes to their school who he comes to realize as they spend time together that he has misjudged. There is more to Eric than meets his eye and also Zak has some growing to do as we follow along during his story. A sweet treatise of the growing pains of youth and young attraction, this book was so enjoyable. I am glad I read it and will go back for the first book in this series.

Overall, I liked this book. My only criticism is that it is so.darn.LONG!! There were some scenes that could have been cut without taking away from the story, and without lessening the build-up of the love story. The whole Alberto-Michael storyline could go, for instance. It didn’t add anything to the story in my opinion. I do appreciate that Michael was the protagonist of Book One in the series, so this was an effort to include him more in this one, but the whole thing ended up being nothing anyway, so could have been left out. This book would have benefitted from some judicious editing to make a tighter, stronger story overall. One other criticism: I really dislike how the final take was handled, like A LOT. Total cop-out on a pivotal moment.

That said, it’s a sweet story with good characters. It culminates in a hilarious contest for Eric’s heart that was probably my favorite scene in the whole book. I might check out book one, when I have time!

Gosh, this book is wonderful! This is the first series that I have read by this author but I have loved both book one and this one was an absolutely wonderful follow-up. Both the main characters were complete opposites jock/nerd but it worked with them. Zak and Eric both attend Collete International School in France. I love the setting and the diverse set of characters. This was a fun easy read with low angst and it is just fun. It is a long read around 500 or so just know what you are getting into. But it wasn't tiring or long like reading some long books. It was kind of like GOT (length-wise) you just want to keep going because you are invested and the people and plot are interesting. I love seeing all the characters from book one. It was just a fun read and I can't wait for book three!!

This was the perfect slow burn romance. And boy was it slowwwwww! The tension of will they / won’t they was built incredibly well throughout and by the end I was absolutely dying for them to FINALLY get together!

I loved the first story in the Colette series but for me this was even better. Eric was just the perfect character, a proper ray of sunshine throughout and his flirting and teasing of Zak, as well as his soft tender moments (the nap on the boat scene ❤️) was so lovely. And Zak too was adorable, it was sweet to see him come out of his shell because of Eric and his friendship with Camille and Arthur was lovely too!

I would absolutely recommend this book, and really looking forward to book three so I can understand Alberto a little more too! I’m sure he’s not as “soulless” as he seemed 🥹.

The first book was really good, this one was even better. I prefer reading long books and I love slow burn. So it was right up my alley. Zelda French knows how to write perfect love interests. Michael was so sweet in the other book, Eric in this one is like a dream. He is so likable, you can't help but fall for him (with his flaws and all). Sigh. It's a perfect opposites-attract story.

I was glad to see Louis as well, I love his quirkiness.

After this, I recommend reading the bonus story: Eric's Secret Diary. It's from Eric's POV and very enlightening.

I am looking forward to the next book (and the ones after that?). I'm guessing it's gonna be about Eric's mysterious new friend mentioned in Eric's Secret Diary.

And lastly, what was Alberto's deal? He was so strange.

When I read I Want To Kiss You In Public I really enjoyed so I was excited to find out there would be more Colette International book series! I absolutely loved You’re The One For Me! I enjoyed that we got to touch base with Michael and Louis and Yasmine of course! But this book provided a fresh set of characters to love! Zak is a such a good protagonist but Eric had me swooning! I loved the way he was just so comfortable with his feelings and wants! I got started and I couldn’t put it down! And then there’s Alberto, I’m not at all sure how I felt about him as a character but I am excited to see where Zelda French take his character in the third book! I loved this so much I had to buy the physical copy!

3/5⭐

textbook case: I'm reading a relatively long book and at first? it makes me feel so much. the characters, the romance, the plot, everything in my mind plays out like a movie with vivid sensations and I don't notice just how much I'm reading because I'm so immersed in the story. but then? usually about halfway through? I just suddenly lose the capacity to feel anything. this is usually triggered by one (1) line I don't like or a scene I find boring and everything after that feels mechanical, like I'm reading a schoolbook or something. the characters I've shipped since the beginning share a very emotional moment and get together? cool. a conflict is finally solved? okay. a plot twist I did NOT see coming? all right. I. just. don't. feel. a. thing. and this phenomenom is annoying af because when this happens I'd usually been absolutely loving these books before that. this book, however, was unnecessarily long and there were quite many things that kept putting me off so that might explain this numb feeling. I'm a bit disappointed because the first book of the series made me feel so much and this one just... didn't really except for the beginning. I still wanted to write down some things I liked and what I didn't like (can have very minor spoilers that didn't really have any significance plotwise!)

things I liked:

-grumpy/sunsine trope! we got a smol introverted grumpy guy with trust issues and an overexcited extroverted golden retriever love interest who likes to steal ipods
-eric. except those few times he acted like a weird macho guy love interest lol. but most of the time he was very charming and certainly energetic
-the setting and atmosphere. a lake/pond in a middle of the forest, french countryside, a film shooting...
-bisexual representation!! the first book let me down in this regard so I was so so happy about this
-delicious slow burn. the obliviousness and miscommunication almost drove me insane but it was kind of worth it (the general numbness aside)
-the writing style! kind of simple and easy to follow but still very pretty!
-just the chaos. I love me some good chaos, thank you very much

things I did NOT like

-there was a random yucky comment about girls starving themselves to look like the skinny mc? idk, kinda threw me off
-just some really weird sexual innuendos?? "I promise I won't put it in"??? what in the yaoi
-on the topic of yaoi, it was weird. I kinda felt like the romance changed at one point and started to have these weird stereotypes? I think the author's mindset was something along the lines of "the nerd is the 'woman' and the jock is the 'man' in the relationship". fortunately in this case it wasn't that clear cut but it veered toward that trope at least (the mc calling himself "ex-girlfriend", "wife", implying he couldn't be the dominative one...). one of the reasons I loved the first book so much was because the love interest was the sensitive nerd haha
-the love interest was also pretty pushy at times and the mc VERY oblivious
-calling a neurodivergent side character a psycho? what was up with that? idk, I know they're teenagers and all but I still flinched every time I saw them use that word
-the cast could've been a bit more diverse. too many straight people for my taste lmao
-even though bisexuality was addressed on some level, this book still felt pretty heteronormative for some reason.
-the female characters were mostly written pretty poorly. stereotypical and annoying. also sexism?? like the mc calling himself the ex-girlfriend when he behaved in an annoying way? not a fan of that at all

Wow, this one was long . . . way too long . . . and if I hadn’t promised to review it, I might have given up. As in the first book in the Colette series, the author focuses on one VERY anxious MC and the book, all 534 pages of it in this second one—is told from his perspective. And, unlike in the first book, for about the first third of this one, the MC has no friends! So, the story feels claustrophobic.

There is not enough plot to justify all these pages—just endless conversations, missed opportunities and overanalyzing followed by more conversations and more missed opportunities and more overanalyzing till you want to throw the book across the room since so little happens. And the writing is so-so. The characters are supposed to be speaking in French, but there are alot of British-isms.

The book does have two winning MCs—though Eric seems to come to terms with his budding bisexuality much easier than warranted given his background. There is also a good plot that would have worked well at half its length—a group of Parisian high school drama kids go off to rural France to film a script (a historical gay romance!) that one of them has written. The main MC is a nerd and, of course, the other MC is jock. Thich works for me—though here the author veers dangerously toward a frequent failing of gay romance written by women—the nerd becomes too often “the woman”--he even refers to himself as the “wife” at one point and is constantly being picked up and carried off by the manly jock. The jock is cast as the love interest for the nerd in the film when the nerd was hoping his hopeless (in so many ways) crush would get the part instead. Of course the MCs become friends and 500 pages later, boyfriends.

There are some fun secondary characters, Camille and Arthur and Yasmine (from the First Book) and a fun race at the end. But there is SO much repetition and not enough plot to sustain the length. With a good editor, the author could have turned out a very pleasant and fun 250-page read instead of this slog.

Did I pursue a fantasy when I already had something real? I should have known the difference, but how could I? No amount of books and movies can teach you about the real thing. How it feels to truly be wanted and appreciated for who you are. The feeling of missing someone's company terribly, so terribly your blood itself aches in his absence and boils at the sight of him. Fantasies can only sustain you for a while. Eventually, we all come to crave the real thing.

There's a little madness in the act of letting go. Of letting oneself love and be loved, of treading the same uncertain path billions have trodden before, hoping they will best its trials, emerge victorious, their love the only one to be undying and true.
