Dewdrop and Banyan Tree

Rate this book
Short sweet joys, shadows of darkness and testing moments in life, short sighted vison of progress at the cost of Mother Earth, beauty of nature, religion, vibrancy and happiness of childhood, perspectives of grownups, trauma of war, ageing, memories, nostalgia, instillation of values in childhood, poverty, tender relationships, the burden and despair and the tears of unfair bondage of helplessness and the pandemic are some of the themes Ramachandran Rajasekharan deals with in his poetry.

Most of his poems can be enjoyed for their beauty and simplicity; at the same time, they draw the reader into layered thoughts. To that extent these poems are complex and intricate with the delicate balancing of emotions of helplessness and pain, offset by the small drops of joy and tenderness of relationships.

These poems are influenced by happy childhood and the values passed on by the poet’s parents.

Absolute simplicity, smooth narrative, delicate balancing of complex thoughts, lyrical quality, and the poetic imageries they create, all combine as a marvellous bouquet of poems to read, enjoy and ponder upon.

Simple, well-written and also interesting... this is how I describe this poetry collection, surprisingly the debut one, by a well-versed poet Ramachandran Rajasekharan... poems will come calling to you to dip yourself either in the nostalgic past or in the deep realisation of different aspects of life itself.

Rajasekharan's poems are surely unmatched by his peers, other contemporary poets who tend to versify their day to day experience with simple rhyme and no reason. This poet has tried to offer his thoughts rather than decorated verse. The poems are not rhyming all the time but the journey of thoughts is managed in a wonderful way and that creates a much-appreciable effort on the readers. I liked that. Poems are serious and grave in nature. Melancholy, simple joys of life, past, memories, vision, observations... many things are there in the poetry by Rajasekharan!

I liked the poems. It begins with a devotion to Krishna, originally written in Malayalam by the poet's mother and translated into English by the poet. Many other poems are eulogizing, contemplating and brooding over nature and her ways. Some poems are about the world today and some are about life in general and specified dimensions. Serious in nature. Simple and sometimes moderate lexicon and a clean diction makes the collection more than simply worth reading. Enjoy it.

It's actually one of the very few sensible poetry collections that I have read by contemporary Indian English poets. I will have to give it to the author. He has transformed his experiences, memories, realisations, lessons and things that he feels and observes into poetry. Some of the poems are written by his mother and father as well and it is nice to see those being translated into English by the poet... sentimental. Poems are about nature, life, Gods, Goddesses, perspectives of life and so on... if you love serious poetry with sense, you are going to love this collection.

This book is wonderful... the poems directly come from the depth of the poet's heart and you can feel it. Sincere attempts at remembering the nostalgic past, curious look into the future to come, observations about the present, contemplating the society, humanity, and things as the poet experiences day in and day out... it is a wonderful collection of about 50 poems, sweet and short. I am sure readers will find it worth reading because of the appeal that these poems have. Written in a clear style and clean diction, I am impressed by many of the short poems more because I got to read more in those few lines.

The poetry collection makes me nostalgic, afraid, joyful, pleased, worried and hopeful at the same time. I guess this is the state that a poet would want to achieve. Ramachandran Rajasekharan has tried to portray his vision, ideas, imagination, memories and thoughts into poetry and I truly liked whatever he has offered to the readers. The poems are having different layers, deeper meanings, varied interpretations and many things to offer. You will like the shorter poems as well as those reaching one page.

It’s been quite a while since I last picked up a poetry book.

Though I quite enjoy reading poetry, I often lament that I don’t read them as much as I would like to.

So, with that thought in mind, I recently picked up Ramachandran Rajasekharan’s Dewdrop and Banyan Tree.

Honest bookworm confession – this book had my heart from the very beginning, for its cover features two of my most favourite things – greenery and rain.

One look at the cover, and the reader in me, was bubbling with anticipation.

The blurb at the back also reinforces the same, reminding one of the simple things in life – happy childhood days, sweet joys, the beauty of nature, memories, and nostalgia.

Dewdrop and Banyan Tree is a wonderful poetry collection that offers insight into human life, human existence and many different things associated with the same. Ramachandran Rajasekharan has poured his experience into this act and his poetry might be new, his poems are old... also in the sense that some of the poems are translated from Malayalam, written by his father and mother. And everything together makes this poetry collection a must-read for all poetry lovers!

The most amazing thing about this poetry collection is its vividity. From all the shades of grey to all the shades of red, this book has everything to make you feel smile, cry, dance and sing. The book contains more than 50 poems and out of the 'Krishna' is my favourite poem from this book. As such anything related to Krishna immediately attracts me. Anyways...This book is fabulous and should definitely be read by fans of poetry because it has so much to offer them.

I guess the poet has used an experiential style here... he writes what he has experienced. Yes, there is imagination as well. However, experience takes over on many occasions. And it's nice to see and read.

Wonderful poetry collection... I can only recommend this book... The poet has poured out his heart and intellect together and it is a rare sight seeing a poet employing both the faculties together in any poetry collection. The poems are short, sweet and amazing to read. It is not a casual collection that you will read and forget. You will remember this for long because it deals with things that we have to encounter in our day to day lives. I liked many poems including Poetry and Me, Life, Dewdrop and Banyan Tree.

Ramachandran Rajasekharan didn't write mere imagination, he has actually written true emotions with which we can easily relate. To read him is a pleasurable experience in itself. In his poems, you can find anything love, nature, time, life, sorrow, grief, spirituality, family, childhood - anything and everything. At some point, I found it easy to move on, but some thoughts were so deep that I had to stop myself to read again the entire thing. A peaceful read!

A meaningful book of 50 short poems. I have always admired simplicity in poetry, because when I fully understand the meaning of words I change perspective to look at life. Yeah… I am saying that literature helps me to soothe over my burdens and lightens my heart and dispels the darkness that I gathered due to ossified beliefs and bitter-sweet experiences.

On personal front, I liked this book of poetry by Ramachandran Rajasekharan. He is a CA by profession but a true believer of literature by hearts. The book shuttles between good old memories of youth and childhood, but at the same time when the poet looks at his grandson, he realizes what mess we have created in the pretext of progress for our future generations.

My personal poems in the book are based on childhood. It’s relieving to see how delicately the author explored the tender streaks of childhood, those days at the rain, sneezing, scolding of mother, and what not. Even at sixty, he remembers the antics of a child. In the poem ‘Unhappy Child’, he pin points the burden that our education system puts on a malleable child. It holds a strong message for teachers and parents.

Pick up any page, read any poem – I am sure you will relish it as I did. Simple narration delivers powerful poems. All in all, I had a lovely time with this book. In fact, I read some poems many a time. The book is neither shallow nor exhaustive, it fits all readers. It’s 5 out of 5!

There is power and depth in Dewdrop and Banyan Tree. The poet didn’t use any specific literary technique to deliver, he rather fell back on the ways of weaving simple and lucid tapestry of stories in his poems. The poet's moving, personal work collects and makes sense of the phases of collapsing and rebuilding one's self on the treacherous modern path from teenager to adult.
Tinged with the memories of yester years and the complexity of rich nostalgia, Dewdrop and Banyan Tree stands out from the Insta-poetry crowd as a collection worth keeping. Dewdrop and Banyan Tree centers around themes of love, emotional loss, the catharsis of creating art, and the struggle to find one's voice in memories rooted deep within the lineage and culture of our lives.
Among all poems, ‘Three in a Row Stars’ is my favourite one. This poem is written in tribute for a man, his wife, and mother. They are now visible from the sky on the eve of Christmas.
“You can see the trio at night
Twinkling three stars in a row
Wishing all Merry Christmas.”
I also grew appreciative of the poet as and when he got quarantined in the hospital for being a Covid case. But in his solitude, from his ward window, he appreciated the dazzling nature. If you appreciate life and had so far a good one, I am sure you will like this book for more than one reason. 5 out of 5! An exquisite read, with highly reflective powers.

Ramachandran Rajasekharan’s debut book of poetry, Dewdrop and Banyan Tree finely expresses its concern and raises voice that echoes within the heart of the poet.

This book is straight, meaningful, enjoyable and extremely lucid and delicate within its language flow. On offer are 50 short poems on life lessons, memories, nostalgia, tribute to parents, motherly love, vagaries of life, and Covid pandemic. On a pros note, the book has that undercurrent of optimism and positivity.

Also some of the poems are translation of Malayalam poems written by his mother, which is a unique way to pay tribute to her. My personal favorite is the titular poem: Dewdrop and Banyan Tree that talks about two aspects of life – delicacy and being strong. Dewdrops are short, sweet, selfless, and delicate, while banyan tree depicts shadow, long spells of life, power, and authority. It’s contrasting yet grand in its essence and says that the purpose of life should be great despite the odds of shape and size.

This book will remain close to my heart always for one very strong reason – it has lot in the form of memories and reminisces on childhood glory. The way he explored the tenderness and innocent of childhood is simply superb. In the end I will say before concluding the review that Dewdrop and Banyan Tree is a highly adorable poetry book that will grab your attention right since the first line.

Dewdrop and Banyan Tree by Ramachandran Rajasekharan is an enchanting poetry read, with an inherent theme called life. The poet unspeakably divides the book in two parts, first twenty or so poems are light and mostly based on childhood and nature. And the second part or say towards the end of the book the poems are grave. However, contrast is a latent aspect that churns beneath the book forever. In some of the poems both dewdrop and banyan appeared to compare two aspects of life, one is pure and fragile, while another one talks about strength and support and agility.

The poet brings forward life lessons, concerns related to nature, and the memories of childhood glory. It’s evident that the poet brims with compassion and altruism, it’s reflected in poems like Unhappy Child, A Rare Luxury, and Tale of the Homeless. On the other side Child to Me to Child, Child Rain and Perspectives, A Wonderful World, The Child is the Father of Man – are about children and the issues that mar the innocence of a child.

All poems are expression of the poet’s life experiences he gained in various stages. He confidently talks about many topics and issues through the flowery language of poetry. It’s such a good book that instills hope about life…read it and feel it. An enthusiastic lovely collection…overall!

Dewdrop and Banyan Tree by Ramachandran Rajasekharan is a lovely book of 50 short poems on life and other related themes. The poet’s flair for writing is simple and lucid, I had no difficulty understanding this book in one go. Except a few abstract poems, I sighed in appreciation for the poet for his humbleness that he carried for less privileged people.

Another set of wonderful poems in the book was translated ones from Malayalam to English, which were originally written by his mother. The circle of life completes through poetry, though it’s not semi-autobiographical. Nature, beauty of heart, compassion, love for self, self-esteem, and vicissitude of life are some common and prevalent themes that gallop across the book. You can understand that circle of life by one prominent poem – I Still Remember – a mesmerizing poem where he is comparing two of his worlds: childhood days with grandparents and the comfort of city life. If you have had spent some time in the village and then moved on to city for life and career, this poem will throw you back in the loop of time. The flowery prose reveals the succinct universal truth about our lives. A collection as real as our feelings!! All in all, go for it, you can engage with the poems and lean some valuable life lessons. Ramachandran Rajasekharan is a genuine contemporary poet.

Dewdrop and Banyan Tree by Ramachandran Rajasekharan is a captivating poetry collection that is rich with a gamut of themes running around human lives. The title of the poetry is contrasting – Dewdrop vs. Banyan. Dewdrop means fresh and pure while Banyan suggests rigidity and obstacles and authority.

The collection stretches up to 50 poems that can be read in one go, but this book is not like any other normal insipid one that once done and closed, rather it will not let you sit, you will be nudged to see the poems over and again to find a sense of tranquility in your heart. Indeed poetry is healing, it’s magical and powerful stream of words can control our life complexities and soothe our minds.

Ramachandran Rajasekharan speaks on many things, for instance, nostalgia of youth, concern for future generations when he lifts up his grandson, motherly love, and through poems like Tale of the Homeless, A Rare Luxury he pragmatically captures life of less privileged and poor he stumbled across. It indeed is a cathartic type of collection for people grappled by restlessness that is caused by rat race or our worldly desires. Kudos to the poet for brining such a great and lovely collection to our tables!

Simple yet effective! A short and gorgeous book of poems! Mostly, I liked poems on childhood and those Malayalam poems translated in English, those had something charismatic in them, for instance that poem praising Krishna and weighing the unlikely roles of banyan tree and dewdrop.

The poet beautifully described nuisance of childhood and nature and the country side road…it caught my attention. I finished the book in one sitting and read it again. There are parts of the book, which are just relatable, especially that poem on motherly bliss:
"In this motherly bliss, the world around melted off and disappeared.”

Other than childhood memories and nature, the book does not revolve around a particular theme, rather it covers many such as home, society, courage, strength, acceptance and culture. The book could have been cute if it had been filled with illustrations and pictures. The words are simple yet effective. The book gives all the hope and it ends on a very beautiful note. A must read for new to established readers. This book has had a soothing effect on my nerves. Fantastic experience…

Ramachandran Rajasekharan’s debut poetry collection “Dewdrop and Banyan Tree” is an engrossing book of fifty short poems that stretches its themes across life, nature, memories, Covid isolation and much more.

I admire the poet for his classic poetic narration. With an ease, he pinpoints many concerns and on the other hand brings memories alive as someone is living right next to us. He is diligent and great with his endeavor in the poetry. My favorite reads in the book are poems about nature like The Bequest, The Child is the Father of Man, and Country Road is lollapalooza. I could never take off the following excerpt of Country Road from my mind…it will linger for as long as possible:
“The old country road not able to sleep in the night
Or during the dusty day, serving its fate.”

While pouring his heart out in a flowery language, the poet also pays tribute to his parents by translating some of the Malayalam poems of his mother into English. For someone looking for an easy and docile poetry, the search can end here. Through simple and lucid language, the poet rendered expressiveness in his efforts.

Dewdrop and Banyan Tree by Ramachandran Rajasekharan is a book of 50 short poems on various themes that the author came across in his life. The collection is abstract, random yet impressive because the poet pens down his emotions and concern with some charming innocence. I am happy that the poetry is not on romance, rather on vagaries of life. He discusses love for mother, father, his sentiments of youth, vivid description of nature and his village and that life which was simple and loving - I mean childhood.

I could feel that the collection has that personal streak in the poems, the poet put what he felt and saw in his life for a longer duration. His ability to put his experience through poetry is commendable; it is not an easy job at any given day. For that he draws inspiration from his parents. Away from any genre stereotype, this poetry is something class and different. Except a few ones, I instantly fell for all poems. Brilliant, ecstatic, and powerful – Ramachandran Rajasekharan has a long way to go in the Indian poetry arena.

From the façade it looks as the poet jotted down poetry as it came and enfolded in his life. Many readers may find the book a good read but some can definitely relate it to simpler times of youth and life they gorged previously. On one side Ramachandran Rajasekharan is beautifying the nature around his life and glorifying childhood days, and on the other hand he doesn’t shy away from pointing out the selfish nature of men that has jeopardized the face and the balance of nature and that could offer nothing to the coming generations.

His poetry is not limited to concerns and issues of nature and humanity, there are many lines and stanzas that will sway and win your heart despite being in contrast. More than an independent book, it is also a tribute to his mother who penned down many poems in her native language Malayalam. It’s a highly likeable poetry book where each word is docile and doesn’t go unnoticed. Have you ever tried poetry? If looking to start with simple one, this is for you. And for hardcore readers, this could be a cakewalk.

Poems are a way of life. We can cry, laugh, muse, satire, and be with memories anytime. Any collection that is easy on vocabulary means can stir my heart. My recent read Dewdrop and Banyan Tree is an awesome work of 50 short poems.

The book is highly dedicated to life, it with its words building tempo of nostalgia, memories, good old days of being a child and a young man. No doubt about it that the poems spiraling off poet’s own life. He keenly observed a lot which is being sewed in this book. The poems are worth reading, they will inspire you, make you gloom as the poet sulks for nature’s cause and remembers his childhood and misses parents. All poems are good to great, in fact the titular poem Dewdrop and Banyan Tree is not only astonishing with its meaning but also a great read on the contrasting nature of our life…as a fact it comments on our purpose of life and more.

The title Dewdrop and Banyan tree is a sublime, stripped down to the point poetry book of 50 short poems. Mostly captured in South India, the poet’s life of youth and childhood and beauty of villages comes alive in his words. He writes what he knows. It is a poetry that emanates from one’s life experiences over a bout of imagination. Ramachandran Rajasekharan has given soaring wings to his poetic style that depicts the nature of life he lived, as he turned sixty now.

Through its mixed genre poems, the book explores both: inner self of the poet and the outside world he witnessed in various stages of his life. It explores various moods, the good, bad, compassionate, blissful, despair, etc. It reminds us the value of life that we are living and it is okay to feel whatever you are feeling.

No rhythm, no rhyme but poems of Ramachandran Rajasekharan felt like musical waves to me that was embracing me and caressing my soul. It's not just one or two, but all the poems of this collection are equally good and different. It rarely happens. I enjoyed it as it lasted... I am sure many more readers will connect with my experience.

I enjoyed the poems. I also enjoyed the preface written by the poet's friend and someone who understands poetry well. I am interested more in poetry than in any other genre of literature and my reading list and books on the table are testimony to that. Ramachandran Rajasekharan's poems are very well-written and bear the marks of many years of experiences of the poet living among human beings, working, walking, managing, offering and receiving. However, at times, a few poems in a row become singularly focused on one particular emotion or aspect of life and I wish this changes the next time this wonderfully aged poet brings a poetry collection.... do read it!
