Just like with the show this next volume just builds up that amazing mmo vibe and tension and truly starts bringing in some of my favorite external characters to the scene, especially with the arrival of pencilgon! I could get how this could also come off as an overwhelming info dump if you don’t know the characters or if your not fully down with the meta game lingo and knowledge, but for me this was a glorious ride of bad*ss action and we’re only on the second volume! 4.25/5

A bit too much over the place for me, too many people who the MC knows turning up, including a girl who likes the MC and was all like that she wasn't good at the games the MC plays but when she gets into the battle she is like the biggest danger of them all, an annoying nemesis from other games pops up and can just fuck off again. But there are battles (including with a big bad boss) and new moves to be learned and I liked seeing our MC level up and get better and better (but slowly and I appreciate that as he seemed already quite overpowered), I liked seeing him travel through the game. I am still not a fan of talking animals in any medium, so I was happy when that rabbit could change into a human, at least for a bit. I really like the art, and I am very much interested in the game, the quest, and all the other things, oh and I liked those bonus pages in between the chapters. So I will keep on reading.

As with my review of the first book, I found it difficult to read this book for itself, vs. comparing it to the anime, which has the upper hand of being more than able to showcase the games in a believably immersive way. (I love books, but actually SEEING video game effects is always more impressive, especially when it's one of the times computer-generated animation looks APPROPRIATE.)

Also as with my review of the first book, it's miserably difficult not thinking of this as a storyboard for the anime, vs. its own work, even more so when this is a part of the story that wasn't exactly FUN (Sunraku is assaulted on all sides by players as DESPERATE to find out what he knows about the unique content he unlocked as the "gunters" in Ready Player One, main difference being that absolutely nothing even hinted at Sunraku's unique scenario even being an option). I also sort of feel... impatient?, since this is volume 2, and the anime is currently probably around at LEAST volume 20 by now?

*checks*

...oh. The anime's only up to book 9 so far. I guess that's fine (other than I could barely find volume *2* to date).

That's some padding, then! They're really stretching the story out as much as possible per volume! Here I worried it was taking like four episodes per book, but it's a LOT more than that. Huh! And on TOP of that, they also have the ShanFro Theater Mini episodes! The anime team sure is cranking out the content!

...

I sort of have to wonder how the manga artists for these feel when the anime looks SO much better than what they put out. I mean, it's not like the manga art is BAD (and even when an artist has a team of assistants, the team working on a manga can't compare to the team working on an anime), but it definitely feels rougher and less cute than the anime (specifically with the change of Emul's ears being ridiculously long, as mentioned in my other review), so it feels kind of unfair to compare them, but I can't help it.

Okay volume, but I heavily prefer the anime. Still recommended for (Japanese) video game fans! (Non-Japanese video games trend toward very different genres than what's covered.)

I think I used my "Bizarro" tag last volume, which is reserved for like "Weird Fiction," but I'm changing it out for the "Absurd" tag, which I use for... well, Absurdism. There's something existentially nonsensical about a manga that's just about a dude playing a video game and trying to generate Hype like a more standard shōnen battle manga.

Anyway, this volume introduces a lot more characters to further flesh out the world. We get into the "training" element of the bunny quest at the very end, which is like a "boss rush" of sorts, but eight of the battles are skipped and summarized, which I feel maybe defeats the purpose of the manga, because I guess we're just skipping monster fights now? Are we sticking to PVP and major bosses going forward? I guess I'll find out.

I don't like how high-level characters/monsters have HP in the low 100s. Fucks the scaling a bit. What games have such low stat values?

I like Pencilgon's hip windows on her pants...! 🥵

STUFF HAPPENED AND IT LOOKED GOOD?

So Volume 2 was… interesting. It mostly just felt like a bunch of stuff happening back to back and a ton of new characters making their debut. But that sort of cluster of people and events isn’t really new to me in manga, the action was still fun, and the art retains the quality from Volume 1.

Really, my biggest issue is that it ends in the middle of a fight which bothers me immensely. I don’t like that it did that whatsoever. I feel like if you’re releasing in Volumes like this, and it’s not some major, dramatic, built-up-to for a long time battle, there’s zero excuse to cut off in a fight like that.

But, I digress. I’m still enjoying the series and plan to continue reading, I just hope that ending in such a bizarre place is not an ongoing issue for these volumes, because THAT would bother me.

Plus Emul is adorable. I mean, come on. Talking bunny with magic? Classic!

Shangri-La Frontier continues to be a fun and adventurous manga about exploring a game world. This volume starts to flesh out some of the main characters. This includes adding a character from the main character's backstory that feels like it has a lot of potential to expand our understanding of him. Fun and fast paced, I'm excited for volume 3.

This volume was really good! I really like the world in this story! We learn a little more about our main character and the people in his life. It's a really fun fantasy manga that I highly recommend checking out.

Great series!

I really enjoy the anime, and the manga is no let down! The pacing is fantastic, the artwork is great, the characters are awesome... I think I said this all before when I reviewed volume one. Safe to say, it is consistently good! I'm enjoying it, time to binge read!

The art is solid, especially the action, and it is nice to have an isekai that's just people playing a video game with that being the only stakes.
