⭐️4 Stars⭐️ Murder by Numbers by Megan Mayfair is going to be a wonderful series, I loved the Australian beach setting of Lemon Tree Bay (Book 1) and getting to know all the characters.
If you enjoy reading a cozy mystery you’ll adore this, the plot is well thought out and I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and trying to solve the murder mystery.
Clara Mitchell returns to her hometown of Lemon Bay after a failed business venture. She meets handsome accountant Lucas Pepper when he comes into her salon during his lunch break for a haircut. Lucas then happens to ask Clara if she’s free on the weekend to go out for a drink.
When Lucas returns back to the office he finds that his uncle has been murdered and he becomes the chief suspect.
Clara can’t believe that Lucas is a murderer and between having run-ins with her jealous ex-boyfriend Adam, the local police officer (and once bad boy) she sets out to prove Lucas is innocent.
Loved the humour, quirky characters, dash of romance and love triangle. It all came together cleverly and I found Murder by Numbers an entertaining read.
This is a great start to a new series, I love a good cosy mystery and I love the setting, the beach is always a good place to be except when murder happens, it is fun, it has a lovely romance and Clara Mitchell is one fabulous heroine I loved getting to meet her and the characters who live in Lemon Tree Bay, I hope you come along for the journey.
Clara is back in her home town after a business failure, she is a great hairdresser and is now working at The Wave Length salon in town to get her debts paid off and get back to the city, for now she is living with her mum Willow. A new customer Lucas Pepper comes in for a haircut and there is an instant attraction to this handsome accountant, here to help his uncle sort his business out ready to sell, the only problem Lucas finds his uncle dead and of course all points to Lucas as the murderer and Clara’s ex, police officer Adam Billings is determined to prove it and keep Clara safe.
Clara knows in her soul that Lucas is not guilty of murder and sets out to prove his innocence which causes a struggle between her and Adam, and puts Clara in danger, is Lucas hiding secrets, who else in the town could have done it?
This is such a great story there are lots of fabulous characters that add so much to the story and it moves quickly, Clara has a battle on her hands to prove that the man she is falling for is innocent while fighting her ex along the way, Clara is good at sorting out the gossip from the truth and finds out some truths from the past as well. This is a story that I would highly recommend and I can’t wait till the next book in the series and go for another visit to Lemon Tree Bay and the fabulous events they hold.
My thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.
I enjoyed this cozy, small town mystery romance. I loved the beach dwelling vibe of the town and the gossip that ensues in it. I love the fact that Clara has her gift that ended with her being right and her tarot reading mom. I also loved the slow-burn romance between Clara and Lucas. I think if this was pitched to me as a romance with a side of mystery, I would rate it higher. I thought the main character, Clara, would delve into the mystery aspect more throughout the book - but it took until around the 80% mark for that to happen. It was still a cute story though and I would read the next in the series maybe not for the mystery but to see if Lucas and Clara are mentioned in the next book in the series lol.
Disclosure: I received Murder by Numbers as an ARC, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Murder by Numbers is book one in the new series by Megan Mayfair called The Lemon Tree Bay Mysteries. After her business in the city failed, Clara Mitchell returned to Lemon Tree Bay to live with her mother. She was working for the local hairdresser salon where she met Lucas Pepper. When the local account Hugo Pepper was murdered, the local law enforcement officers believed that Lucas Pepper had killed his uncle. Clara Mitchell does not believe that Lucas is a murderer and starts to investigate to clear his name. The readers of Murder by Numbers will continue to follow Clara Mitchell to discover what happens.
Murder by Numbers is another fantastic, cozy mystery by Megan Mayfair. It is also the first book I have read by her. I was engaged with the story and its characters from the first page. I enjoy how Megan Mayfair portrays her characters and their intertwining throughout the book. Murder by Numbers is well-written and researched, and Megan's description of the settings complements the plot.
Murder by Numbers readers will learn about the consequences of match-fixing and how it affects community clubs. I recommend this book.

Murder by Numbers by Megan Mayfair Genre: mystery, suspense Narrative: third person POV, past tense
I like the idea behind the newest book from Megan Mayfair- it’s a cosy mystery. After reading ‘Finlay Donovan is Killing it’ and a little bit of ‘Arsenic and Adobo’, I know I cannot get off not reading more books within this genre. It has a hint of mystery and suspense to keep the story moving but the tone is airy and laid back like you’re reading a rom-com book, which is always my favourite kind.
Murder by Number starts of with an intriguing start (which, I supposed, the reason why I requested the arc), Clara is at the beach, catching up on her breath after pulling herself out from the crashing waves. It feels intense. And for the next chapters, I’m being pulled into the scenic Lemon Tree Bay, a small town in Australia located nearby the ocean. Lucas takes a visit to the town to help Hugo, his wealthy, estranged uncle working in an accounting firm, however the meeting doesn’t seem to last long because one day, when Lucas goes back to the office after getting a haircut from Clara’s saloon, he discovers Hugo is dead on the floor in his office. The author has keep readers’ interest in Murder by Numbers with 2 main questions. First, who has killed Hugo? And second, how is the prologue related to the story?
If anything, I absolutely adore its world-building, it feels alive and that’s the strongest part I can think of when it comes to reading this book. Megan Mayfair has the ability to construct the world vividly through her writing. I love that I’m seeing the seaside town, the salon Clara is currently working, Esmeralda- the restaurant and all the community activities.
’Tourists with shopping bags, locals chatting in small groups and surfers hauling their boards back from the water lined the streets.’
‘The varied boutiques and eateries catered for the local surfer and retiree crowd, plus the chaotic tourist market, which was starting to quell after a busy January as the holiday season drew to a close’
If Lemon Tree Bay is a real place, I’d like to go there because in Chapter 7 when Clara & Lucas goes to Clam Chowder Night, the description is astonishing. Readers will also going to meet Adam, Clara’s highschool sweetheart who’s apparently back in the town, working as a policeman.
While the writing is easy to follow, I still think Murder by Numbers needs some heavy editing especially when it comes to its plot, pace and the dialogues. Plot holes are everywhere and too many things needed more explanations from the author; eg; -care to explain how the police are at Hugo’s office when he’s dead? who call them? -the way Clara and Lucas share too much information about each other when they just meet. -Lucas is too relax and doesn’t show his grief when Hugo just died, i mean I get it, they are not close but it’s still bothering at how he still wants to have a date with Clara despite everything. -not when Clara is jealous with Lucas/Piper when they barely know each others. Nope! -Clara’s ability. It’s a shame that this thing is not being explored well, no backstories of how she got it.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, these characters are lacking of emotional impacts and connections to readers. Their conversations feel robotic and rigid with a lot of questions being asked. I wish the story-telling could have been done more fluently because apart from its world-building, everything else is lacking.
2⭐️, I couldn’t have guessed the suspect and I will admit, I have not seen it, so in a way, it has kept me to continue reading the book.

Loved this romantic cosy mystery! The small town coastal setting was divine and the characters felt so real. There was a great mystery to untangle and I look forward to reading more in this series.
When her business crashed and burned, Clara Mitchell came home to Lemon Tree Bay to start again. When accountant Lucas Pepper comes into the hair salon for a trim, the two of them are attracted to each other and he asks her out for a drink. When he leaves, she finds a cell phone in a leather case which Lucas must have set down when he went after a lolly pop in the counter jar. She has the time to run it to him at his uncle’s accounting office a short distance away, so locks up and flips the “Back in 10 Minutes” sign over. The accounting office front door was unlocked, yet it looked like no one was there. She glanced down a hallway and saw Lucas with his head in his hands over Hugo’s motionless body. His uncle’s neck had red marks as if he had been strangled. Then Clara’s old boyfriend, now a cop, Senior Constable Adam Billings rushes in and takes over. Lucas becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his uncle.
Adam is determined to keep Lucas behind bars, while Clara intends to do everything she can to prove Lucas innocent. She pulls in the local gossipy grapevine and starts looking for clues. Can she get Lucas freed? Or is he really the murderer Adam says he is?
The plot is well-written and holds the reader’s attention as Clara searches for clues. The characters are easy to like as the reader figures out how they fit into the mystery as they move through the story line. You will find this to be an enjoyable cozy mystery with the right balance of suspense and intrigue. Will Clara find the murderer? Will she be in danger as she puts herself in harm’s way? Grab your copy and enjoy this new series!
This was great for overcoming a reading slump, an easy read and interesting enough to want to finish the book. I’m a slut for small town beach romance and adding a murder mystery to it was greaaat
✍️This cosy murder mystery whodunit series follows hairdresser Clara Mitchell who has just recently moved back to her seaside home town of Lemon Tree Bay with her mother. Whilst at work she meets handsome Lucas Pepper who comes in for a haircut and afterwards becomes the main focus in the murder of his uncle Hugo. Clara is insistent that Lucas is innocent so she seeks out to convince ex boyfriend Adam Billings of that. Adam happens to also be the local Police Constable in the case and is determined Lucas is guilty. Clara now has a big job to do piecing together who the real killer is and convincing everyone of Lucas's innocence.
This was an absolutely delightful book filled with compelling elements based on mystery, intrigue, romance, suspicion, drama and joy. I read it in one sitting. I didn't want it to end. I fell in love with the characters and the premise. The writing style was so well articulated and penned. Such a warm and gracious story. The characters were all tremendous and befitting to the small town hamlet vibe. I can't wait for book two. Highly urge everyone to read.

The good news: This book hit all the required high notes for a cosy mystery, perfect for fall reading with a warm blanket and a hot beverage. There was a great plot that moved at a brisk pace, some surprising twists and turns before the end reveal, and the story was set in a location that was given some character and ambiance, making it feel like a real place to someone who has never been to Australia before.
So why am I only putting this at 2-stars, you ask? I found the development of the main characters to be really underwhelming. I mean, I could identify them and all. But there wasn't really enough information given about the MCs to make me want to read about them. The background/secondary characters were equally as developed. It didn't feel like a story about Clara, Lucas, and Adam - it felt like a story about the entire town and we just happened to talk to these three a lot. It was hard to connect with them in any real way or to root for them.
The book also used a lot of romance novel cliches. Like, A LOT. Lots of "hearts skipping a beat", if you know what I mean. That, plus that lack of MC development, made it feel like Clara was very much into her man because the writer said that should happen, and not because of any chemistry or romantic/sexual connections between the two. I couldn't figure out why Clara would be interested in either Adam or Lucas, other than the fact that it was a requirement for the story to move to the next page. Now, could you make the argument that this isn't really a romantic suspense novel, it's a cosy mystery and romance just happens to be there? Sure. But if you're going to include it, then it should feel more like an intention than an accident.
So, great atmosphere, great supporting cast, a fun mystery to solve. But really lacking in the romance department and the character development for the main trio was really missing something that allowed me to connect with them as people.
I'll read the next book in the series, but I'm not going to have high expectations for it.
My exploration of cozy mysteries hit new highs with Murder by Numbers. All of the characters were so well developed, as was the town of Lemon Tree Bay, that I felt like I knew all the people and places. The twists were teased out until the surprising ending was revealed. Lemon Tree Bay is delightful and I can’t wait to return in Book 2.
I’m a sucker for a cute, fun and cozy read about small town drama with a touch of murder. This book wrapped me up in a warm hug and was just what I needed to get out of my reading slump.
For being such a short book, it took me way longer than expected to read it. The story was slow paced and the ending wasn’t what I hoped for. I wasn’t able to connect to any character and disliked them, expect Gigi. I probably won’t continue this series
This was a really cute cozy mystery with a side of romance that I overall enjoyed. I really liked a lot of aspects of this book, but there were just a few things that were missing that sort of dampened my overall rating. That being said, I'd absolutely love to continue in the series in the future!
The one part that really hit it out of the park for me was the setting. I love a quirky small town and Lemon Tree Bay does not disappoint. The story is set in Australia which I knew when I started but somehow every time I sat down to read and saw the lighthouse on the cover, my New Englander came out and I somehow kept picturing small coastal New England towns. The only issue this caused was me being confused for like half a second when details like it being nice weather for a picnic in February popped up but that is 100% on me. We got some great key details about the town that really helped solidify the atmosphere for the story. A little eccentric, a little touristy, a little beachy, and a whole lot close-knit. As with any small town, the local characters are also out in full force in the story which, again, added to the overall atmosphere.
I'm a little torn on the character relationships in this story. On the one hand, I really loved Clara's relationship with her mother and with her friends/acquaintances. She's very friendly and kind to the people around her and Mayfair does a great job at sticking in little details about the history the characters share. However, her relationships with her ex and Lucas I found to be underdeveloped for my taste. It seemed like Clara had more chemistry with her friend the barista at the cafe than she had with Lucas. Most of the story is told from Clara's POV, but we do get the occasional snippet from both her ex and Lucas but I didn't find these snippets sufficient to make up for what I was missing in the relationship. Since this is the first book in the series, I thought maybe we'd only get a few details but these two romantic relationships might get further explored in the next books. However, all plot lines were wrapped up by the end which left me a little bummed that we didn't get more development during the book. This might just come down to a personal preference or what I'm used to from reading a lot of straight-up romance books, so maybe other readers won't feel the same.
I really enjoyed the path the investigation took and I'm finding that my favorite cozy mysteries (or maybe most cozy mysteries do this) rely pretty heavily on small town gossip. Small town secrets/gossip is almost always a winning trope for me and this book was no exception. I thought the reason for Clara getting involved in the investigation was unique and very realistic for someone who doesn't have any law enforcement or journalism background. Clara is very much just a regular person who is doing her best to make sure all lines of the investigation are exhausted. I thought the eventual reveal and motive for the murder was also unique, well developed, and realistic.
As a final note, there's also one key detail about Clara that isn't mentioned at all in the book description (so I'll consider it a spoiler and not mention it specifically) but it threw me for a loop. It isn't a bad thing by any means but it felt like such a key detail for Clara, the investigation, and her relationships that I was surprised it wasn't mentioned in the description and just sort of plopped down into the book.
Overall, I really enjoyed this cozy mystery and can't wait to return to Lemon Tree Bay. I loved the setting, atmosphere, investigation, and most of the character relationships. I would like more development between Clara and the love interests (both current and former) so maybe I'll get more of that in the future books in the series.

In my initial updates I gave a few things I liked, like the book is not written in first person but third person and you get narrations from different characters. I also like the setting in Australia as I haven't read much Cozies set abroad yet other than the UK.
But.... I do have to say that is where the positive ends for me. As much as I liked the characters and the setting, the story itself was very, very bland. I have been reading Cozies for years and this one did not do it for me. Normally we have a protagonist who dives in, does her best to find clues even though she should stay out. This book felt more like a romance novel due to the many, many scenes with Clara and Lucas, with a little murder on the side instead of the other way round. I missed the tension of finding clues, asking questions where they should not be asked. Even though I read this book in 2 days it wasn't because it was exciting and I couldn't stop reading, but because I hoped it would pick up somewhere, but not even the ending had any tension and excitement in it.
If you like romance novels this might be more your cup of tea, but if you like Cozy Mysteries..... I'd skip it. I gave the book 3 stars as it has some good things in it and is nice when you view it as a Romance book, but I don't think I will read another installment when it comes out. Unless it will have an actual murder mystery with sleuthing.
After a spectacular business failure, Clara returns to her home in Lemon Tree Bay Australia, to live with her mother and work in the local beauty shop, where she meets Lucas Pepper, an accountant who has come to Lemon Tree Bay to help his estranged Uncle to sell his business and retire. Enter Clara's one-time love, Adam, a bad-boy who is now on the police force and you have one powder-keg of a book! When Lucas's uncle is murdered, while Lucas is getting his haircut, Lucas becomes the #1 suspect!
Clara, a reluctant psychic, introduces Lucas to the quirky seaside community, where they have chowder fundraisers and everyone goes to the cricket field. Her gut tells her that Lucas is not the murderer and her ex is barking up the wrong tree, but she seems to be the only on in Lucas's corner. While Adam dismisses her visions and intuitions, Lucas listens to her and they start working together too unravel the mystery, not only of Lucas's Uncle's death, but also the Uncle's estrangement from the family.
I really enjoyed the story, in many ways, it was as cozy at the Oyster Chowder competition in the beginning of the book. In enjoyed the interplay between the characters of the town, they were well developed and just quirky enough that you wouldn't mind having them as your neighbor. For Clara and Adam, their story highlighted the push-and-pull of growing up in a small town. Both the wanting to go out and make your way in the big wide world and the learning to appreciate being somewhere where people care about you, just because. While Lucas's arc of getting to know his uncle and his family's history was incredibly interesting and well done. The mystery was well-paced and you always could empathize where the characters were coming from, even if you weren't a fan of their choices. It IS a mystery set in Australia, so as an American-- the emphasis on Cricket as the game of choice, was lost on me, but once you got used to the extra "u's" and focused on the story, it was brilliant.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Clara's first hair trim of the day was a tall, good looking man; new to town, and looking for Hugo (the owner of the biggest accounting firm).
When she noticed the man left his phone behind, she knew where to find him. But they were both unhappy and surprised to find Hugo dead in his office.
Thus begins a fairly average seaside town murder mystery. Clara's ex-boyfriend is a policeman, and a jerk, and he is convinced that the new guy--Hugo's nephew, Lucas--is the "evil killer." (It was so surprising!)
This book is a light read. The clues are rehashed too many times, and the few intelligent characters get stuck asking obvious (duh) questions, but that's pretty standard.
I enjoyed the little bits of community events like the chowder cook-off. I really did not want to read about Clara getting naked (just once; no details--thank you). It's still much more information than I want about other people.
My only real concern was the intensity and frequency of hearts skipping a beat or fluttering, and tingles shooting down the spine indicating lust or whichever other ridiculous thing at the time. If it had been a drinking game, we would be all out of the 2 liter orange Fanta. And Clara was lusting for no reason at all. It became embarrassing.
Aside from those things, the book was fine. I would love to say it was great, but not even one character broke the clichéd mold. (Lucas' tantrum on the beach was surprising, but sadly comical.)
I wanted to like it, but I honestly can't pass a book like this on to the other mystery readers in my family. Sorry!

Fast paced cosy mystery in a small town. Clara has returned back to her home town, living with her mother and working in a small hair salon after her life takes a hit. Lucas has arrived in the town to help his uncle with this accounting firm where he ends up being the prime suspect for murder. The local badboy turned Police Officer is incharge of the case who also happens to be Clara's ex boyfriend. Clara is hell bent on proving Lucas' innocence, but as the case progresses, they realise there are plenty secrets even for this small town.
I loved the small town vibe, the community activities and how the mystery was interlaced. Lucas is the typical new guy trying to figure his place in. Clara has her roots here, with the talk about her father and brother. Adam cannot outrun his past or reputation.
I was feeling for these characters, I loved how it ended, but i started doubting. Clara was such a unique character, she remained positive and followed her intuition throughout the book. She gets premonitions and visions but like Adam said, it hasn't made her cynical towards life. Lucas was too perfect, that's why it was easy to believe him, but I like characters like Adam. He had his prejudices, pretty much like how others have towards him, but he gave Clara a chance. I liked his motivations, he was dating the mean girl, but his feelings were genuine.
I was guessing who did it the entire time, and I was pleasantly surprised with the twist and loved how everything came together. This was such a good mystery with some romance.
Thank you to Book Sirens for giving me the chance to read this book!

Review: I adored this cozy small town mystery! It is the first in a series. Clara was such a likeable heroine and I enjoyed most of the characters! Clara was spunky and has a back bone who is always looking for the good in people. There is a cute romance and the mystery keeps you guessing. It is a small town where the story takes place everyone knows everyone so there is a lot of gossip! Which kept the story interesting and I discovered quite a bit about some of the characters! If you are looking good for a new cozy mystery I highly recommend you check out this book!
This author is new to me, but this won’t be the last book I read by Megan Mayfair. I really enjoyed it, from the first page to the last.
I recieved this book as an ARC and knew nothing about it, but as soon as I started reading I was hooked.
The main character is Clara who has moved back to her hometown after failing in business. She now works as a hairdresser in a rather dingy saloon and her ex boyfriend Adam (who broke her heart) is back in town as a police together with the girlfriend he left her for. So far it seems rather standard, but then enters Lucas, an estranged nephew to the local accountant. Said accountant turns up killed and Lucas is the prime suspect. Clara’s intuition says he’s innocent, but she’s conflicted. Adam’s intuition says he’s guilty and he’s worried about Clara, and conflicted about his feelings for her.
It’s quite usual with books that change between two characters point of wiev, but here we have three, and it really lifts the story. The story is told in third person, mostly through Clara’s perspective, but we also get chapters from both Adam’s and Lucas’s points of view. That makes the story more complex, gives it more depth and above all it’s not so easy to guess who Clara will end up with. That is something I really appreciate. There is romance, but it’s not the main story.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a mystery with great character building.
Murder by Numbers is a fun mystery with a splash of romance. Megan Mayfair did a great job of keeping you guessing by throwing in plenty of twists and turns and giving you romance and drama at just the right moments. This was my first book by the author, and it has me wanting to read more of her books now and I definitely plan to. This book has everything you want: quirky and big personality characters, mystery, a hint of romance, humor, and gorgeous scenery....oh and we can't forget some amazingly fun town traditions (I just want to live there already, well besides the murders haha I'll stick with my real life small town on that side of things haha).
The only thing I had a difficult time with in this story is getting attached to some of the relationships/romance aspects. I loved how each one turned out and who everyone was with. However, I just felt like some of the couples (don't want to say who) just needed more to them as they seemed to not want to be together, even though they do want to. I'm hoping (fingers crossed) there is more explanation for it in future books, like seriously way excited to find out. However, even with that slight issue I had, the book was overall amazing and I highly recommend it. I love that this book is going to be the first in a series, and I can't wait for the next one to be released, so make sure to read this before more comes out.
I don't have any strong reactions to this book. It was a good mix of romance and mystery, but if you want something that focuses mostly on the mystery part of the story, then you probably wouldn't want to read this book. It definitely has a lot of drama in it, stuff you would expect more from a romance, but I don't think it took away or overshadowed the mystery of the story.
The main character, Clara, seemed to get caught up in the mystery naturally, she didn't have to try too hard to insert herself in there. It all flowed really well. The first chapter really sets the stage for the story. It creates a moment of suspense that draws you in and keeps you along for the rest of the story.
I will say that I didn't have everything figured out immediately, but as I continued reading, I could recognize that certain things were going to come into play, I just didn't know how yet. It kept me guessing and trying to piece everything together, without giving me a ton of details to sort through and analyze., this added to my enjoyment of it as a story.
I found the characters to be interesting, so I will probably continue with the series for that reason.
I received an ARC of this book for free via BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The murder mystery is not the only mystery in Murder by the Numbers. Who killed Hugo is eventually discovered as Clara asks questions and pursues leads. Another mystery is on whose side is Clara's ex-boyfriend, the policeman? Many times, he seems self-serving and close minded. Adam seems wishy-washy with his feelings and unreliable as a policeman and a boyfriend. Is he and Clara supposed to reconcile? What about Lucas? Will Lucas be Clara's love interest? Piper is another character that I find unlikable. She seems shallow and unkind. Does Adam really care about her or about her family's money and power? Clara's mother is another character who seems flighty and unreliable. There are some interesting plot twists concerning the murder, but I do not find any of the characters likeable. In addition to questionable relationships, editing errors are distracting. Misplaced modifiers, run ons, and switched pronouns are some of the most glaring errors. I wanted to like this story set in Lemon Tree Bay, but the inconsistencies and weak characters make this story hard to enjoy. I received a complimentary advance review copy of this title through Book Sirens and submit this review voluntarily.
Murder By Numbers is a very sweet, clean , romantic cozy mystery. It takes place in the small New Zealand town of Lemon Tree Bay and stars the intrepid amateur sleuth/hairdresser Clara Mitchell. Clara single handedly juggles her career woes, relationship uncertainties and solves the mystery of the local accountants murder with flare and a positive attitude. She finds a new love along the way and makes peace with some unfinished business as well. I love how the author throws in Clara’s quirky tarot card reading, crystal wielding mom and a little paranormal psychic visions as well! This story ambitiously had it all but somehow blended it perfectly. There were a few laugh out loud moments. It wasn’t a grisly murder mystery series, so it’s best to read if you’re looking for a light, fun escape. I’m looking forward to following Clara and Lucas into their next foray….which may just involve a neighborhood pet?? Hmmmm, we shall see!!!

It is not quite a 4star (more like a 3.7) but since I really enjoyed it and was positively surprised I will give it the couple of points extra. It was a really nice cozy mystery with a great twist of romance and suspense. The setting was lovely, the characters diversified and you could really get the feel of the community. My "objections" refer to the description of the characters, which I would really have liked to have more of (e.g. if it weren't mentioned at some point in a passing manner that Lucas is in his late 20s I wouldn't have any idea how old everyone is) since I couldn't really picture them while reading. I was also a bit put off by the different types of POVs. Mostly it was the heroine's but it changed without you really understanding immediately whose POV it was. Also at some point the narrative was in 3rd person. The editing definitely needed more work but overall it was unexpectedly good-reading and I will surely read the next books in the series. Murder by Numbers is a clever, engaging mystery romance. There were quite a few twists and turns that kept me guessing. It is set in the small town of Lemon Tree Bay in Australia. Clara is back home after working elsewhere as a hairdresser when a business deal goes bad. She meets Lucas, who is new to town and visiting his uncle, when he stops in for a haircut, and sparks begin to fly. • Soon after, someone is murdered and Lucas is now the main suspect. Complicating matters, Clara’s old boyfriend is one of the main investigators and is convinced of Lucas’ guilt. • I really liked the main character, Clara - she was driven, optimistic, and trusted her instincts. Lemon Tree Bay is a quirky town with lots of interesting residents and fun, offbeat traditions, like a clam chowder festival and lip synch night. • I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys their romances with a dash of mystery or small town romances with fun side characters. • I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the first book I have read by Megan Mayfair and it definitely won't be my last! I love mysteries with humor and this book delivers. Clara has recently returned home and is working in a local hair salon when a straight-laced (and hot!) guy named Lucas comes into her salon for a haircut. She discovers he is in town to help out with his uncle's business. When he leaves his phone behind after the appointment she decides to return it before her next appointment. Imagine her surprise when she enters his uncle's pretty much deserted business and finds him distraught and standing over his uncle's lifeless body. To make matters worse, when the police show up at the scene, Clara's ex Adam shows up. Adam has also recently returned to town, too, and this throws Clara for a loop. Two hot guys, a girl, and a whodunit?! Yes, please!
I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books in the series.

I probably wouldn't have chosen this had the blurb been honest. "Somewhat unreliable intuition" is code for visions, and a bad one at that. But then it also hardly mattered because honestly, the visions had no purpose. Clara didn't trust her visions and do anything with them, so what was the point? Some foreshadowing that could have been done other ways? Visions, in a non-fantastical setting, need to serve a purpose, and again, there was none.
I have more complaints about Clara's actual intuition, but they contain major spoilers.
I did like the small town representation and the gossip being spread. It fit in with how I always imagine small, tight-knit communities.
There are quite a few plot-holes that I feel were either poorly fixed or left wide open, though. Or were some potentially missed opportunities in terms of plot points.
Overall, it was a decent enough cozy mystery that I will continue the series, despite the mediocre rating. Because in terms of it being a cozy, it works. I just felt it could have been better.
