Robert Vaughan – The Crocketts’ Western Saga Bk 2 – Slaughter in Texas – Reviewed 8/25/21 – Read 8/23/21

The boys decided to try their hand at Silver mining but end up as Marshalls of Shafter!

Will and Gid decide to try their hand at silver mining, so they head for Shafter, Texas. Little did they know that trouble would be waiting for them. Of course, the first place they stop at is the local saloon as the heat had parched both of them. Just after they received their beers, the back door opens, and a large man walks in wearing a badge. There was a card game going on in the back corner and the marshal heads for that table talking to one of the players. Apparently, the man had been told to stay out of town and he didn’t take it to heart. The marshal was in the process of trying to take the man to jail. Unfortunately, he did not see the man on the balcony that had a shotgun pointed at his back, but Will did, yelling to the Marshal to look out, Will had no choice, he shot the man, killing him. At the same time, Bell, the man at the table drew and shot the Marshal, also killing him.

At this point Bell turned to the boys pointing his gun, Will spoke up telling him that it was not his fight, but Bell would have none of it. Will still had his gun in his hand and instead of arguing anymore, he shot him, killing him on the spot. Behind the boys, a voice rings out “What is going on here?” When they could see him clearly, they saw that he was wearing a Sheriff’s badge. One of the men that had been sitting at the table told the sheriff that Will had shot Bell for no reason whatsoever. One of the other men a small rancher by the name of Dan Rankin, spoke up for the boys and stated that Will had been forced to shoot. The other men in the bar backed this up. The sheriff turned to leave saying that he would be keeping an eye on Will from now on.

Join Will and Gid as they find out the mysteries of the town, the cattle war, the mining problems, and two beautiful women…

What did I like? It seems like everywhere the boys go they step into a pile of horse apples. It is so fun reading about the messes that they get into, the amount of food that Gid can put away, and the beautiful women that they become involved with. Of course, they always step on those apples, and gunplay will start up every time.

What will you like? Beautiful women, owlhoots, robbery, corrupt lawmen, gunplay, a cattle war, mining war, and lots of interesting interaction with the townspeople right in the middle. The storyline is amazing taking historical people from the past, reshaping, and forming them to fit this book. I love how Robert spins his tales about the boys and keeps the past alive with every adventure. The interesting characters in this one are just short of incredible. I loved the character of Doc Hawkins! Don’t miss this next adventure of the Crockett boys in “Slaughter in Texas” available now!!!

Great story till ending

Vaughan is a talented writer. However errors in story construction can totally ruin a good story. I don't wish to ruin the story for others, so I will limit what I say. I will say that one should maintain a weapon of choosing and not mistakenly switch weapons a few lines later. I would still recommend reading the book, but suggest better editing next time.

the rewrite of the OK corral fight…

It was a good story , still is however a little to close to say it was original…Mr Vaughan has always written a good story, I’m a little astonished that this one is so close to the Earp fight in Tucson. Don’t let my opinion stop you read it for yourself…..enjoy.

Shout-out at the Ok corral

This story is an adult lot like another book. 2 far from perfect brothers now lawmen and their friends Doc who is doing from TB.
NOW, I've enjoyed the series so far.I suppose there is enough difference to let the suspicious similarities pass. Not the same story.

Another great western by Robert Vaughan. Great characters and plenty of action to keep the pages turning.
The second book in the Crocket series and I've already got the next one lined up.
Years of writing experience comes to the fore when you immerse yourself into the pages.
Can't go wrong.

The Crocketts keep getting better

This one showed the real evil that men could possess. The brothers in the book were evil and good. But all were loyal to their own kin. The build up to the OK Corral was great. The finish was classic.
I'm getting #3 next.

Fast pace western

Cowboys vs city folks. Cowboys wanted to run everything. The Crockett came to town to mine for silver. They got mixed up in the fire and became the city Marshalls. Lots of side stories. An easy read.

Book 2

I am hooked on Robert Vaughan. I am sure you will be also. It was an easy read. The Crocketts seem to get into trouble, but finds away to settle things straight. It is a good western. It isn't hard to call them heros.

Will and Gid head for the Texas Silver fields and end up being town marshals. The miners and the ranchers are at odds with the ranchers being much more ruthless and murderous. The county sheriff is a fence sitter and the deputy sheriff is as crooked as the ranchers. Someone is going to lose.

A good story line depth as well as action.

It was a sad look into ppl that are miserable and will do anything to bring pain to others. Well written and true to the west.

Dukes of Hazard

Imagine the Dukes of Hazard instead of General Lee, riding horses. Loved the ladies, Soiled Doves or not. Great action, nice story.

This is my 2nd book in the (western genre) series.
Vaughan is a great writer.
This is about cowboys and their code. They wanted to be known as bad men that they were. It’s too bad their code got them killed.
Would love to see what happened to Polly
