Between Two Worlds
In this coming of age story, Tony Piccinin and Amy Kashiwagi fall in love at a high school Hallowe’en Dance in 1941. He’s Italian—she’s Japanese. After Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, Amy is incarcerated at Manzanar, an American concentration camp, and Tony serves in the Pacific. This was an interesting book, but it was an easy read, which was nice. Though I think the plot moved a little too quickly, it was interesting to see how the relationship between Amy and Tony adjusted from normal life to being separated for years. I do think everyone's—especially Tony's—attitude to the war was a little unrealistic at first. Especially when he first gets drafted—he's just like "oh, I'm now part of the United States Army, alrighty then." Overall though, I recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a short, but informative read.
