Holiday Homecoming #1

Fiesta de empresa

Rate this book

R A T I N G: 3.5 stars to The Office Party! ★ ★ ★

“Hell yes, they do.” He smiles. “It’s mandatory. No exceptions.”
“Top executives and yourself included.” I rattle off his infamous memo line. “An off day would make you one hell of a hypocrite.”
“Not necessarily…You’ve been my only exception from day one.”

The big merry 'C' word is just around the bend, gleefully tossed about in more than just hushed whispers now that we've moved into the penultimate month of 2021. And admittedly, I'm both wondering how ten individual months were snagged from under me so swiftly as much as my very semi-celebratory self feels just as unprepared for another something-to-celebrate occasion. I do love the atmosphere, the festive air and the general mood of indulgence but I'm not particularly one for seasonal reading. To read Whitney G’s Christmas-themed novella wasn't a purposeful, seasonal attempt to dress myself in a fictional wreath nor to adorn myself in yards of figurative tinsel. I selected this on pure whim, as is per the usual for me and I really, really enjoyed every bit of my time with The Office Party.

We instantly get a precept of Garrett West's professional discipline via his inviolable Christmas work policy which demands (without exemption or excuse, without fail every December) that every employee must observe his annual, sacrosanct tradition: The Office Party. West Media's CEO is a non-lenient, work-obsessed taskmaster who believes the holiday season is no time for a holiday. As such, he's the giftee of employee scorn, with a whole behind-the-scenes assembly of personnel dedicated to backbiting him to smithereens; a chat group all started by his colleague, Savannah Grey.

One year earlier and no longer willing to humour her boss's ridiculous tradition, with a sneaky flip of the bird to the end-of-year non-holiday, Savannah calculatedly plans her escape. Her mini rebellion backfires however, when she's caught red-handed by the demon in a three piece suit in person. A mighty mission to cheat her way out of The Office Party ends up with a major interruption as her boss eats up the miles between them just to tow her back to face the established company custom. One year and the same job later, Savannah aims to gift the he-devil with a present that matches her utter lack of affection for him. This also backfires when she receives an after-hours invitation of a different sort altogether…

Over the years, I've read very few novellas for the reason that shorter-length reads often don't have the page-length to accommodate replete, replenishing storytelling. They can fail to deliver a story that assures developmental particulars are met. It's very fair to say that I have an ambivalent relationship with them, and hence have a preference for full-length stories because I feel secure that a writer isn't creatively limited by a laconic style. This is also why I have huge admiration for writers who can tackle ‘the novella’ with fine-pointed finesse. A full-length read compensates the general lack in a short-length read. And a full-length story will usually tell a story better than a short-length would, and with the absence of depth bite-sized literature has to really pack a punch. The Office Party would have been a brilliant read with more words to tell this story, but I still think it was brilliant for what it was. It was easy to get into, easy to turn the pages, uncomplicated and undemanding and I really enjoyed the writing.

To pick apart a few things, I was surprised that the author chose to put her hero/heroine in separate relationships for a story of this size (even if those sidelong relationships have a swift shelf life). I also puzzled through a hero and heroine who have apparently both been in love with each other long since but have spent that time apart and with other people. Granted, as mentioned above, a novella is more conductive to the depth of a sinkhole than one of a valley, but I think the author could have shared a few more details still. I'm still trying to suss out the age group of the protagonists, how long they've worked together, where the enmity comes from when both Savannah and Garrett are alike in many ways. But perhaps I’m thinking In full-length novel terms so take this with as many pinches of salt as necessary reader friends.

I really loved the relationship chemistry; the need for Garrett and Savannah to outfox one another. The relationship dynamic works really well and it’s clear that Whitney G. comfortably writes her leads with the practiced, performative to and fro we love, but I am conflicted about what Savannah and Garrett actually have been to each other over the years. She's his favourite executive. They're supposedly friends but frenemies too, with a history of attraction while the frictional bite back dresses up the sexual tension. The author does let us know that they've been at this cat and mouse chase for years, that they do have a simmering (if not acted upon) history which does help in setting a slim scene. Again, a fuller story would have quashed the confusion but all in all, it is a bit abrupt and the exclaimed 'I love you scene’ is a fitting bolt-from-the-blue example.

Of course, the hope for more was always at the tip of my tongue but the author sharply pulls this interracial office romance together with steamy repartee and rom-com chemistry. It’s well-written, readable, fun, amusing and a perfect little confection for the shifting season. I really enjoyed it and promptly signed up the author’s newsletter. An alphahole boss (an infringer of seasonal joy) and a bold heroine (who gets everything on her Christmas wish list) entertain with steam and personality in the first addition to the Holiday Homecoming series made up of bite-sized novellas. My romancing mutuals, this is absolutely worth a read.

C O N T E N T_W A R N I N G: Swearing, minimal bedroom scenes and also mentions compulsive drinking.

E X T R A T H O U G H T S:

1) Seeing as this is a short read I do think the blurb gives too much away.

2) Also, I’m really surprised that Garrett actually does fire his own brother for the same reason he ends up retracting his no-fraternisation policy. But then perhaps we should expect nothing less from Whitney G.'s brand of heroes.

This just had me grinning like a fool. It was so over the top and dramatic in that rom-com type of way and it played like a movie in my head.

Such an enjoyable time.

For a few seconds, I forget that he’s Satan in the flesh—that he’s flown thirteen hours to confront me in another country.

If you're looking for a quick, steamy and fun read, look no further. If there's one thing I can say, is no matter the quibbles I may have, Whitney G always delivers on a fun and satisfying read, no matter the length.

I love a good enemies to lovers romance, but particularly when you have a sassy heroine give as good as she gets to the alphahole of a hero. And this one delivered that in spades! Garrett and Savannah have amazing chemistry and I loved the push and pull between them.

This could have been an amazing full length novel and had all of the ingredients to be one. While I love Whit's sexy novellas, I couldn't help thinking this would have been better as a full length. I would have loved more development for these characters and to see on the page what was described of their personalities off the page. Like Garrett's satan boss antics. I would have loved more of that.

All that aside, this was still incredibly satisfying and hit the spot nicely. If you're looking for a fun office romance with an enemies to lovers trope, definitely give this one a go.

Sometimes all you need is a Whitney G novella.

In the end, it didn't reach the same level as her older books, but it was still very entertaining and enjoyable.

Although at times the story was a bit over the top and made no sense, but I loved the tension between the couple and their fascinating employee/employer relationship. The way they pushed each other's buttons, and tried to outsmart each other is something I always enjoy.

Overall it was an easy and sexy novella for in between other books.

This had a lot of potential but the time jumps and back and forth got me really confused. I also can't take it seriously because the boss is violating laws and not just human rights when he tracks down our female heroine. I also don't think it's cute when she talks back to him when he's her boss. Also she has a boyfriend too??? Like okay bye.

Quick & enjoyable!

Read this based on a recommendation by a friend. I don’t really read that many holiday romances, but this one was funny and hot so it works. Mean boss makes everyone go on a mandatory vacation office party every holiday season. Heroine is also a workaholic, but she’s over the holiday party. Or so she says. I don’t know just two people who have a lot of tension and it finally ignites. Relatively quick story and it’s in KU.

This one was a lot of fun. If you’re looking for a workplace romance/enemies to lovers Christmas novella look no further. I liked both Garrett and Savannah and I think this would have made an amazing full length book. Whitney G set so much up which was great, but there wasn’t as much follow through as I wanted. Overall I really liked this one I just wish it was longer!

snarky, bantery, and spicy

Whitney G is such a guilty pleasure; her books make me smile, giggle, annnnnd get a little hot as well 😅.

Savannah’s been working for her cocky of a boss, Garrett, for a while. She knows him to a T; so much so that when their mandatory Christmas party starts coming up, she needs to get him a gift (Secret Santa), but because she doesn’t wanna put any thought into it and wants to stick it to him, she regifts the sweater her sister buys her every year.

Every😐 year 😐

Except this year 😬

No, this year, her sister gave her a toy… but not just any toy 😬… she got her the kind of toy only women use 😅, along with a note detailing how she could fantasize about her boss while using it 🫣.

Cue secondhand embarrassment 🫣😬😭.

And now, Garrett wants to meet with her to discuss this present… and she’s gonna do her best to avoid him 😬.

Good luck with that 💁🏻‍♀️

What I liked/loved: possible spoilers
—the banter 🤣. These two are so damn quick with it. I. Freaking. Luuuuurve it 👏🏻. I found myself giggling, like usual, and also side eyeing Garrett 👀 he’s so damn confident 😉

—the dirty talk 🔥. Garett has one diiiirty mouth 🥵. I would’ve loved to hear more of it, but the book’s not long enough 😭

—the 🔥. We only get one detailed and other scenes that become FTB, but I was okay with it (for the most part 😐)

—showing up on her “sick” trip 🤣. Ermagod 🤣💀 not Garrett showing up when Savannah supposedly had a flesh-eating bacteria 🤣. He’s so 💅💁🏻‍♀️

—the boss forums 🤣💀. Oh no no no 🤣🤣🤣 no the employees talking ish about their bosses 🤣. I was 💀

—the bachelor ceremony ❤️🤣. The freaking audacity 🤡. People waiting to get a rose to see about job security is everything 🤣

—the sweet stuff Garrett does behind her back ❤️. She doesn’t realize the lengths he’s gone for her 🫶🥹 (even giving her bf money to take her out on a date😐🤡)

—Garrett’s alpha/cockiness 💁🏻‍♀️

—they’ve been wanting each other 👀 (damn fraternization policy 😑)

What I wanted more of:
—for it to be longer 😭

—a better epilogue 😭 give me many years into the future please 🥺

—so, if they’ve been wanting each other, why did it take so long to date? 😑 at one point, she mentions he’s a manwhore 😐. Sigh. We only know of one boyfriend that she had (that’s mentioned); I hope she wasn’t waiting around too long for him 😐😑 lol. When she says no other women, I wish he would’ve told her there hasn’t been any in a long time 😭. Ugh. Oh well.

Overall, I really enjoyed this❤️.

⚠️ safety squad ⚠️
-no cheating/sharing/owd

I love Whitney G. I love novellas. I love holiday-themed books. Well, I got all those things with The Office Party and I am not mad about it. I love me a Whit alpha-hole with a huge heart who is secretly in love with his best employee! I devoured this short story in just an hour and it sure gave me the satisfaction of reading a sweet and sexy treat from one of my favorite authors.

The tension between us is palpable and ever-present, but we pretend like it doesn’t exist.

When December comes around, I think some part of my brain shifts and gets ready for holiday romances and novellas, I freaking swear on it! lol It's the time of the year I read more novellas and The Office Party was a pretty awesome one that left me wanting more of Garrett and Savannah. I loved their relationship, the banter, the sexual tension and when their true feelings finally made their appearance. I am a sucker for two people who secretly want each other this badly and Whitney did a very good job with these two!

“You’ve been my only exception from day one.”

So, I am rating The Office Party with 4 STARS because it was a quick, sweet and sexy treat from the amazing Whitney G. that I happened to really enjoy. If you guys are in the mood for a new Christmas novella, be sure not to miss this one!

Savannah Grey is a beautiful, single woman living in New York who is the rising star at the company she works for in Manhattan. As the top advisor for the C.E.O. of West Media she never gets a break. She's a hard worker, but believes everyone deserves time off at Christmas. Unfortunately her boss Garrett West has a different opinion on the matter. He believes there is no such thing as a day off in December. The overbearing, arrogant man is infuriating. He lives and breathes work twenty four hours a day and expects the same of his employees. Their yearly two week all expenses paid work retreat isn't exactly how she'd choose to spend her holidays. This includes the mandatory event that is their office party. The annual secret Santa tradition goes horribly wrong when she pulls her boss's name. Who do you buy the man who drives you crazy. When she decides to re-gift a present her sister gave her, things quickly turn complicated. Even though she can't stand her boss, he's possibly the sexiest man in Manhattan. The tension has lingered between them for years, and soon becomes too hard to ignore.

-The two of us dance around each other every day- somehow never spinning into one another. The tension between us is palpable and ever-present, but we pretend like it doesn't exist.

Aaaahhh I loved this so much!!

What I loved
➤ There was banter and I'm a sucker for it!
➤ This novella reminded me of Thirty Day Boyfriend and basically all the other boss-employee novellas of hers in some ways but I didn't mind because they are all quick and super enjoyable reads.
Also, the fact that I will probably never get tired of office romances might be an important factor lol
➤ I loved the dynamics between Savannah and Garrett, they had this enemies vibe but then it felt like they were friends too.
➤ Whitney G. writes pettiness like a boss. Why is this so entertaining to me? lmao
➤ It's usually opposites-attract, right but I found myself loving the whole birds of a feather flock together theme this book had. I found it hilarious that h and H were so similar and it was also refreshing to see in a book.
➤ I felt like Whitney G. gave the characters more dimension by including some information about their family. Sure it was a bit rushed but I honestly did not even expect anything else to go into more detail besides the main character's relationship (after all, this is a novella), which is why I absolutely take this as a positive thing.

Why not 5 stars?
➤ I didn't like how the Taryn situation got resolved.
➤ There was this sentence that got repeated so many times that it became weird. "He looks me up and down." After reading it for the nth time, all I could picture was some perv who'd move his whole head to look someone up and down in a total over-exaggerated way. Might just be me and my overactive imagination though 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, these were just minor things that bothered me. The gist is, I loved this little novella and you all should definitely read it!

I don’t know how to rate this one. I love me some Whitney office romance but my thing is. I’m always left wondering when did they fall in love. I mean if a guy was a tool to me for so long I’m not sure I would have feelings for him. Lmao.
Novella are so short and I don’t get to see the whole falling In love( why I like my romance and of course the epilogues with babies not engaged)

Spoilers ahead

This is a novella so I'm not doing a long review

The positives
Short read
Hot sexy time
Good chemistry between mcs

Negatives
Poor transition from sorta enemies to lovers, like really really poor
The first parts of the book they're both dating other people, she had a boyfriend! It's a novella!!!! Whyyyyyyy was all that time wasted???? Then they have sex and she's confessing love?!! What?????
The only indication that the h was a black queen(I'm assuming) is from the cover, did I miss her description?? I expected a bit more of the actual culture from this author especially when she met with her family.

Lots or other positive reviews though so I'm in the minority.

usually i wouldn’t like this because she has a boyfriend and the beginning was confusing with the useless ass flashbacks, i could tell some things in this book was written just for page count but omg!! this gave me heart flutters real bad. i loved their dynamic and the dialogue was written so well, usually it gets cringy but idk i enjoyed this a lot more than expected.

This was such a cute and fun holiday novella!

The moment I heard about this book and saw that a WOC was on the cover, I knew without a doubt that I would read this. The fact that it's basically The Hating Game but make it a bit steamier, and I was sold.

I had so much fun reading this and I found myself laughing at loud quite a few times. I kept imagining it as a rom-com movie and I just could see it so well! It has all the makings to be such a cute movie and I especially loved the dynamic between Garett and Savannah who I could read about for 500 more pages.

I can't compare this to her other books as I've only read one and that was years ago, but in my opinion this book is hella good. Even though it's a novella (so therefore it's pretty short), I didn't feel like things were rushed or not developed at all. I thought the author did a great job of showing us not only development between the two main characters, but also some stuff with Savannah's family as well. Yes, if this was a full length novel things could've been fleshed out more and yes, there are some loose ends that don't necessarily get tied up nicely, BUT this is a novella so what do you expect? I was here for the romance and I fell for them hard so to me this book is a big win and one I recommend.

P.S. can we see more WOC on/in indie NA/Romance books please? I will give all my money for a book with diversity and that's a fact.

This is a fun, fairly light hearted holiday read featuring workplace romance, boss/employee romance, and an annual all expenses paid work retreat featuring their yearly holiday office party. At times it was a bit corny and forced, but I still enjoyed it. There were a few laugh out moments including a horrendous regifting situation and a disgruntled employee website gone wrong.
