The young boy who surrendered his loaves and fish to Jesus is now an elderly gentleman—Grandpa Emet—and runs the family bakery in a village toward the end of the 1st century.

Emet’s grandson, Hanan, is learning the trade and loves to hear his grandpa tell stories as they bake. One day, Hanan asks Emet to tell the story of when Jesus ‘stole’ his bread.

Emet gladly relives the well-known story but then discloses that a different Jesus-bread story is his personal favorite. It’s the story of when Jesus told the disciples to “watch out for the yeast.” Emet loves this second story most because it helps him live where he believes we all should—at the convergence of Grace and Truth.

To clearly explain the effects of yeast, Emet instructs Hanan to carve a 2x2 grid into the baker’s bench, creating four quadrants. The top two squares represent breads that are high in Truth, and the right two squares are high in Grace.

As Emet begins using the grid to explain the three types of yeast Jesus warned about and the three types of bread these yeasts give rise to, three familiar customers visit the Yosef, Anna, and Uzziel. Interestingly, each of these regular patrons perfectly typifies one of the three yeast-breads...

FROM THE BACK

“You know, Hanan, when Jesus stole my bread—as you’re so fond of saying—I actually thought I was giving something up.”

“But you did give something up!” Hanan exclaimed. “You let him take your bread, didn’t you?”

Emet paused as he arrived at the workspace. “Yes, but it was lifeless bread compared to His living bread. My bread was destined to spoil, yet somehow, I still thought I was losing something.” Resting his hand on Hanan’s shoulders, he looked him in the eye. “When Jesus stole my bread—that was the beginning of a whole new life for me.”

“What do you mean, Grandpa?”

Emet patted himself over the heart. “Sure, Jesus may have relieved me of my dead bread that day, but when I received His Bread in return. . . .” His voice trailed off for a moment as he looked over the workbench. “Well, I’ve just never been the same—it’s like I was born again.”

My father was a baker

Paul Durbin has crafted a nourishing & life giving feast in this tale. Using metaphor, story, and Scripture he maps Grace and Truth graphically in new light. Reading, I found error in my ways as Paul gently exposed me and pointed me toward life.

This was excellent!
Such a great read to accompany my Bible reading and it helped put into (much better) words some ideas I’ve been thinking about for around 2 years.

A tasty modern parable about grace and truth offered in bite-size morsels
While many love bread baked with yeast—this vital ingredient provides food for thought in this modern-day parable. Using the well-known Bible account of the young boy who gives up his bread to Jesus, the author expands it into a fictional story. In the process, he imparts a very important lesson about grace and truth.

In this story, the boy is now a baker and grandfather. Emet has a grandson, Hanan, who asks him to retell his favorite story—how Jesus “stole” his grandfather’s bread. As they go about their business of baking and selling, Emet shares his own favorite story about Jesus. That’s the one in which Jesus warns his listeners about the “yeast” of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herod. He counsels his grandson that the best thing to do is to follow Jesus’ example of a life filled with grace and truth.

Emet asks Hanan to draw a 2x2 grid on the worktable with four quadrants. Two are high in truth. The others are high in grace. In-between the lesson, Hanan interacts with three customers who represent each of the yeast breads. And as he does, he receives a valuable lesson on the impact of grace and truth on your relationships.

The story is told in an easy-to-read style. And the author expands the creative visual illustration into a challenging lesson. However, he assumes you have some Bible knowledge to understand what is a complex principle. And it takes some concentration to follow the metaphor along with the grandson to grasp the life lesson behind it.

This book is aimed at Christians who enjoy personal reflection to reexamine biblical principles in their walk with Christ. But the questions at the end of the book broaden its scope to small group discussions for young and old.

I love this powerful summary of a complex truth. Yet I recognize the need to reread it to fully absorb the lesson. Finally, I highly recommend it to everyone eager to taste the Bread of Life.

This was an enjoyable and well written story that illustrated a message in a way that was relatable and not just a sermon. I had never thought about all of the bread illustrations in the Bible, and I love how the baker (who is a fictionalized adult version of a real person mentioned in passing in the Bible) pulls them together to teach the message of the yeast in the Bible. I can see using this with kids and teens to illustrate these very important lessons.

Truth and Grace in one

Simple and easily understood discussion in narrative form of the combining of truth and grace in the Christian life. You can identify with the grandson as he listens to his grandfather talk about the day he gave his 5 loaves and 2 fish to Jesus. Grace and Truth hasn't been explained so well before. Thank you, Mr Durban.

We all love bread but be careful of the yeast

I just loved the book, mainly a discussion between a baker and his grandson. We love bread made with yeast but yeast is seen as something to be careful with. Three types of yeast are discussed, do you know what they are? We need to seek the Bread of Life.

This is a very charming dialogue about law, grace, and bread. 🥖 There’s warm, fuzzy feelings as you visit the family bakery where a grandfather teaches his grandson. There’s intellectual depth on the theme of bread throughout Scripture, and digging into legalism, liberalism, the Law, grace, and knowing Jesus.

Have you accepted Jesus' bread of truth and grace?

I enjoyed the way Mr Durbin told a fictionalized account of the man who had been the boy with the loaves and fish. The discussion of the man and his grandson touched this grandfather.

Jesus: The Bread Of Life

This is an excellent book to reference for Communion… The storyline centers around a bakery and a grandfather teaching his grandson about Christ and the significance of his 5 loaves of bread that Jesus once multiplied to feed thousands. RECOMMENDED

This book is full of great illustrations to help readers understand the importance of grace and truth - as well as the consequences of leaning too heavily into one, the other or none.
It’s an easy read that I think both younger and older audiences will enjoy. Thanks, Paul, for creating and sharing this powerful story!
