As a regular visitor to Edinburgh, I like to think I know Scotland's beautiful capital extremely well. This fascinating and informative book proved, however, that there's plenty I didn't know!

Locals and tourists alike are guided through 20 walks in and around Edinburgh. What's lovely is that not just the obvious routes are covered; these really are hidden walks through the city's meandering suburbs and surrounds, taking in beautiful views and points of historical interest along the way. We're taken out of the city limits, too, which is unusual for Edinburgh walking guides, making this ideal for city-dwelling day trippers or visitors with a little more time on their hands.

It's a little confusing in places, not helped by several streets being named wrongly and erroneous directions - frustrating if you're trying to plot your path using a maps app, for example. A couple of historical points are wrong, too (for example, the Innocent Railway was so named because of its accident-free record, not because it was horse drawn).

But all in all, this is a fascinating compendium of walks and facts which will appeal to anyone who loves Edinburgh, as I do.

My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Like the other books in the Hidden Walks series by the A to Z group, this book includes maps and informative descriptions of walks in urban areas, perfect for discovering new and old places.

Many traditional walking areas like the Peak District, the Lakes, Pembrokeshire, all have many many hiking guide books, but there are precious few urban ones. This is a shame - and I’m happy to see up to date, informative walks from a trustworthy brand now on the shelf. Buy it for your next city break, and take a break from the crowds and see something new.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

An excellent guide!

Although this book is meant to be dipped into as you choose a walk, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from cover to cover! I'm very glad I discovered this little treasure before my visit next year, as with minor adjustments to my itinerary, I can take in some of these walks!! Each walk is laid out in similar fashion, with just enough information to keep it interesting and guide you along your route. It's also possible to see where short diversions are possible. A great help!

I have visited Edinburgh many times, mainly for work, but occasionally for pleasure, but I definitely don’t know the city well. So I found this book very informative and fascinating in equal parts.
I’m definitely going to take a copy with me the next time I visit so that I can explore at least a couple of these hidden walks and see in person the delights they have to offer, and I’ll be sure to take my camera with me too.

A very interesting book and it pointed out parts of Edinburgh I never knew about even though I've past some of the places mentioned many a time! Good for both locals and tourists.
