3.5 💛💛💛💚
Inspiring costume designs that remind me of the Marie Antoinette film— high glamour, but maybe lacking in some substance; though I liked this better than the first! The art is beautiful eye candy, and makes good use of fun steampunk elements to kind of mash up styles. The characters are mostly one-note, although we are beginning to see some determination to end the cycles of loneliness, and some interesting character dynamics. The plot may not be deep, but I am enjoying this series and always want to reach for the next one.

(Note: This isn't, strictly speaking, a manga, since it was originally published in Korea. I shelved it as "manga" for simple ease in navigating my shelves.)

Aristia continues to take action on her decision to become a knight, and is making limited progress with her sword training with the assistance of young Allendis. She's also growing closer to her father, to the extent that he gives her a gift on her birthday two years in a row. Her training is interrupted when Allendis, and many of the soldiers at the palace as well as a detachment of the palace knights, are called on to suppress rioting out in the countryside.

Somewhat at sea, Aristia decides to train on her own, and is frustrated when she makes no progress with no one to assist her. Coincidentally, she happens upon Carsein de Rass at a weapons shop, and he eagerly offers to help her train. But later, upon learning she is a de Monique, and therefore the emperor's fiancée, his attitude chills considerably. After he witnesses her make some decisions in her self-training that could cause her injury, he decides to assist her after all.

I'm not all that familiar with "a second chance at life after a tragic death" stories. This one is similar to I Swear I Won't Bother You Again in having an oppressive air, with venomous emotion lying not too far beneath the surface of our heroine's life. Allendis and Carsein both seem to hate Aristia, for whatever reason, despite what their friendly or helpful demeanors might indicate. As for Ruveliss, it's hard to tell, but the arrival of Jeiun (sp?) (the Korean girl who ends up being the portal-fantasy heroine of this fantasy world and marries Ruveliss) is looming closer and closer, and Aristia will not have an easy time on her journey to becoming a knight of the kingdom. Especially since her weak body continues to betray her...

I continue to enjoy this story, even if it isn't an unalloyed joy like My Next Life as a Villainess. The art is pretty good, and the color work is often gorgeous. The artist and production people obviously put a lot of effort into creating beautiful, show-stopping covers. I love them! I'm anxious to see how the story progresses, though "I'm looking forward to it" isn't the most accurate way to describe it. More of a combination of anticipation and dread. It would be nice to know what's going on in the heads of the characters who surround Arisita, but it seems those will be revelations for another time.

What does it say about me the fact that I'm able to oversee the fact that he is(WAS) such a bad person to her in her previous life, but now that he's mildly a good person to her and cares about her, I'm fine with his existence?

I mean, the prince is not a bitch right now, BUT I KNOW HE HAS IT ON HIM!!!! So, I will be watching closely.

BUT TIA!? AMAZING, SHOWSTOPPING, SPECTACULAR!!!!!

Aristia is doing her best with her second lease on life and is determined to not let the same thing happen again. Unfortunately all her familial support is whisked away on campaign, leaving her alone with her thoughts and with her training for several months. She keeps busy as best she knows how, but with her impending future on the horizon (and closer than she thinks), she has to do her best to not let it consume her.

Adorable, not gonna lie. I'm not usually about that romance thing, but there's enough other stuff that this one's keeping my interest. I want to see Aristia succeed, honestly.

I was intrigued by the concept of this story in volume one, but volume two really lets the characters shine!

A lot of different plot development in this volume. Allendis and Tia’s friendship deepens, Tia’s relationship with her father is more important than ever, we meet Carsein, Tia’s new frenemy and sword trainer, plus Tia falls ill again, and we get a peek at what might have started crown Prince Douchebag’s enmity to Tia.

The lines and color are as gorgeous as volume one, the whole book is so beautiful. And I’m very excited to see what happens in volume 3 as Aristia continues to change her fate.

Boring. Nothing happened and despite the MC h having goals, she doesn’t do much with moving forward to achieving any of them. And what was with Green Hair and that maid? Does he have a violent side? Not shown enough, just teasing hints.

Weak installment, and if it ends the way it’s been said, then this is the poster child for a great idea gone horribly wrong.

2, weak sauce, stars.

I actually really like the story and I loved this volume. I would def love it more if I didn’t get spoiled on who she ended up with. Bec that brings down my rating ALOT. But if I pretend like I don’t know, this volume would get a 5/5!

This manhwa is amazing. The multiple storylines and character builds are great. The message it gives about understanding family, friends, and the power in women is great.

Plus--I mean the things I like most about Isekai mangas or time travel manga's aren't really happening in this book. For example...

Aristia is continuing her sword training, but her frail, sickly body isn’t letting her advance as fast as she would like. One of her instructors warns her not to let her friend, Allendis, get too close to her, so she starts to suspect him for ulterior motives. Later, the riots she was trying to warn against happen anyway - a famine she warned about and the kingdom prepared for still causes some to seize the opportunity for violence. Thus, her sword instructors, Allendis, and her father are all assigned to the riot, leaving Tia alone to tend the house and train by herself. She then meets Sein, the younger Rass son, who, at first, treats Tia with excitement, but after learning she’s the crown Princess, brushes her off and dismissed her interest in swordplay as just a hobby. Tia must prove to him that her training is not just a fancy, that she is actually fighting for her life.

It seems that poor Tia is destined not to have a single good guy in her life, as Allendis is shown in this volume to have a dark side. Sein might bend up being a decent prospect, but for now, he’s a hot head who treats her terribly. This definitely helps prove Tia's need to fend for herself and develop as a master of the sword, but it will also probably frustrate readers who want Tia to find a good partner to end up with.

The art is once again absolutely amazing. The coloring is so thoughtful and beautiful. There are some wonderfully designed pages with the characters sitting under a tree where the shading is done exceptionally well. The characters' outfits are all really detailed and stunning.

Plot: Reincarnated to younger self Ex-Empress noblewoman tries to keep herself alive this time around by making alliances and forming closer bonds with people she previously ignored.

1. So first of all it's been a couple of weeks since I read this and all I have to refer to are my chaotic notes so this is more brainvomity than usual. We follow Tia's journey into becoming a knight. Allendis tries to woo her with very limited success. Soldier boy is a good friend regardless of his intentions. There's some sort of coup-like plot going on in the background. The Prince is somehow now the most interesting love interest we've got.

2. I'd like to appreciate this story for many small things which other similar Manhwa have'nt done. Like making Tia consistently competent throughout the story and not letting her lose any of her IQ whenever she comes face to face with a cute guy. Or actually showing the effects of how being treated like crap in her past life means she panics at the Prince whenever he's around. Or how the story shows (without TELLING thank fuck) how the prince puts her needs above his wants. It's a pretty solid story is what I'm saying. Not groundbreaking, but the characters are complex and interesing and the plot has enough weight to drag my emotions along in its wake. Plus, the art is very colorful and very pretty.

Still only here for best boy Carsein like seriously I love his and Tia's friendship, especially how attuned she is to him and how close they have gotten. Still holding on to hope that they end up together but it most likely won't happen 😑 (I always fall for the second—I guess third in this case—male lead that never gets picked because I apparently love the suffering that brings). Oh can't forget one of the best dads, Keirean. The trope of father/daughter relationships in manhwas will probably always be a favorite.

[SOME SPOILERS AHEAD]
For the first half of this volume, it was a bit slow as the plot navigated through a lot of fluff though with new series like this extra fluff doesn't bother me much since if done right, they can add extra character to the world which I felt they did do here. However, following the theater scene the story's pace picked up and the plot got tighter after a good number of the characters left to deal with an external event. I really liked this turn of events since it allowed the story to focus solely on a developing relationship between the FL and a secondary ML. For me this arch was undeniably the best part of this volume and honestly might be my favorite arch of the series so far.
Character Analysis:
Aristia (Tia)
For most of this volume Tia spends her time training to become a knight, an action easier said than done when her tutors leave in the 2nd half of the volume. After this happens Tia turns to Carsein and attempts to convince him to become her tutor which leads to an enjoyable arc between the two where Tia shows off how determined she is to avoid her fate in the 1st timeline. Overall, Tia's character in this volume is just her being determined to succeed no matter what and the author does a good job showing that.
Ruve (Crown Prince)
Not featured much in this volume though we did get a little flashback about Tia's mom who probably has something to do with why this guy dislikes Tia so much.
Allendis (Green haired guy!)
Obviously, a love interest for Tia, Allendis role in this story bothered me a bit because he doesn't really have a purpose yet in it. Before he leaves in the second half this guy basically just spends most of time cuddling up to Tia with smiles and unyielding kindness. Yes, there's hints throughout this portion of the story that Allendis has intentions behind that smile, but we haven't gotten to explaining this part of his character yet. Due to this I kinda felt Allendis' character was meandering around the volume's plot before he was finally let go in the 2nd half. Looking ahead I am hoping this man will have more of a purpose in this story besides just being a love interest.
Carsein (I love this dude)
The minute Carsein showed he brought in a welcome breath of fresh air, everything featuring this energetic, mouthy boy is just fun to read period! I really, really loved the arch between him and Tia which led to Carsein realizing how serious Tia is about her goals. This development was just plain good writing and I loved it! By far this boy is the brightest spot of a strong volume and I cannot wait to see what happens moving forward with this guy.

Plot (4.5/5) - First half was a bit slow (But not bad!) the 2nd half on the other hand was very strong.
Characters (4/5) - Besides Allendis everyone had a seamless part in the story.
Art (5/5) - These Volumes are so PRETTY!

Overall (4.75/5) - My favorite volume so far, really enjoyable read!

Title: The Abandoned Empress
Volume: 2
Genre: Historical Fantasy

Plot: 5/5- We really begin to see Aristia grappling Fate, and taking her future into her own hands. It helps that every decision and thought she makes is explained and really helps us to see how she is steering the plot in a certain direction- namely away from the crown prince! As she has outlined her intentions going forward in this volume, it will be interesting to see how the plot continues toward this goal throughout the series.

Art style: 5/5- There are more of the jokey chibi-esque panels in this volume, but the ‘proper’ art- for lack of a better word- is equally as stunning and well-drawn. I know I keep banging on about the colour, but it really does help! For me, it has meant that action scenes are clearer as they aren’t just dark and difficult to discern, and that you can literally see the difference between a light-hearted scene and a more serious one by the colours used! A very effective tool!

Cuteness: 4/5- The knights certainly seem to find Aristia cute, and who am I to argue?! The fact that this tiny, petite, pretty child is so well-mannered, polite and demure honestly is adorable. And so smart too! Also, the budding relationship between Aristia and the Marquis is just the cutest, most wholesome thing, and I am an absolute sucker for a strong family bond!

Characters: 4/5-We are starting to be introduced to, or given more page time to a wider cast of characters. Despite this, they never lose their integrity or act in a way that would be out of character, and seem very well rounded and thought out. Some of the newly introduced characters have joined my list of favourites *cough* Sein de Rass *cough*, but my fave character is still the Marquis la Monique, and I’m not even sorry about it.

Relatability: 4/5- After a somewhat cataclysmic event in my own life, my relationship with my father has dramatically improved, so this part of the manga seemed very realistic to me. As with the last volume, the coloured-hair situation is doing me in, but there was barely any mention of the other-dimension-chosen-one, which makes everything feel more relatable.

Overall Judgement: 4/5
