A dark army rises, a new ship sails the seas, and old ones, long silent, are summoned forth to lead.
Whereas only a few months earlier he would not have believed any of it, Salem Swan now finds himself faced with sinister enemies and, equally surreal, surrounded by close friends. He has gained powers as a mythlinguist, and with it a responsibility to reunite the world of humans with the world of myth, known as the Fringe.
With his uncle Ulysses and Captain Fern taken prisoner by a growing Regulat force, it's up to Salem and the crew to seek help in old allies. This takes them to the heart of the Amazonian rainforest, where a city concealed in waterfalls tests the measure of their resolve.
Meanwhile Regulat forces conspire to eliminate fringers of the undeground sanctuary known as the Descended Lands and bear down on the sacred space with a terrible force that knows no mercy.
The world is changing faster than anyone realizes, and salvaging its best parts now rests in the hands of three teenagers and a mythical crew who cannot stand to see it lost.
Jacob Paul (J.P.) Hostetler is an American novelist and short story writer.
His debut children’s book, The Sky Belongs to the Dreamers, earned a Mom’s Choice Gold Award in 2019, while his Young Adult fantasy series, Around Curiosity’s Edge, received the 2021 Reader’s Favorite Book Award for Best in Mythology & Fairytale.
After over a decade of life spanning three continents, he recently made the move back to his native Pennsylvania, where he balances his writing career with work in the biotechnology industry.
Another hit from Hostetler. In Raging Waters, Hostetler wastes no time. His action is urgent, gripping, and he still keeps his wise emotional touch tight. This is what a sequel should do. He skillfully expands upon the mythos introduced in Hidden Meridians and makes sure that the villains come back bigger and badder than before. I'll be eagerly waiting for the ending of this trilogy.
Sequels are hardly ever better than the original but Raging Waters elevates Around Curiosity's Edge into a superior world of fantasy with its brilliant and nuanced storytelling. Like its predecessor, The Hidden Meridians, this book is resplendent in visual imagery, and yet more succinct and urgent in its plot and delivery. Raging Waters introduces the reader to new magical, ancient worlds while the story matures as multiple plot lines come together, and the lovable entourage of characters grow through their journey. Vivid, riveting, and thought-provoking, this sequel in the epic saga that is Around Curiosity’s Edge is not to be missed.
Around Curiosity’s Edge: Rage Waters continues the quest of the intrepid crew of Curiosity to defeat the Regulat and repair the rift in the world between the Commons and the Fringe. The events unfold at a brisk clip, with the plot propelled forward as the narrative shifts among multiple characters. The result is by turns an odd mix of awkward teenage love, existential dread and mysticism that works, because we become so invested in the characters, even the ones we can’t stand. There are moments in this book when my heart just exploded. Something about the arrogance of Salem’s uncle Ulysses with the gall to ask the most powerful beings in this world for exactly what he needs to save his friends. Or the contrast between two of the main characters, Salem and Roach, who are in some ways mirror opposites of each other. Both of them wrestle with self-doubt and sadness, but one is filled with light, the other shadow. The descriptions of the fantastical places in this world are beautifully imagined, continuing the dream-like quality of the first book. I look forward to the next book in this captivating series.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I like the development of the characters and the pacing was really well done. The author does a great job with describing the places and characters in a way that makes it easy to picture vividly as you read
