Five years ago, he stole my memories and my magic. Now he’s back to kill me.

No past meant no baggage. I had no idea where I’d come from, and no dreams for where I might go, but life was simple, uncomplicated. Then the old lady found me and told me about my past. And my magic.

Sounds crazy, right? I thought so, too. Turns out I had a lot more baggage than I ever dreamed of

Now I own a condo with a secret in the basement, and I have a hot firefighter for a tenant who is not what he seems to be, Vampire pledges and demon half-bloods are hunting me down. And my magic? It’s started to leak out and I don’t know how to control it.

I have to settle this, before I kill someone I care about, or one of his thugs kills me. I don’t know his name, but I know where to find him. And when I do…

Well, they say payback’s a Witch.

My family is from Scotland, along the coast to the east of Edinburgh not far from Prestonpans, East Lothian. It’s a quiet place, a fishing town, but we have a claim to fame. Back in 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie had a set-to with a rag-tag army of George II’s Redcoats and, as you could say, kicked their arse.
These days I live in Lincolnshire, with my partner and two dragons currently disguising themselves as cats – something to do with worship and pampering being far more enjoyable than all that pillaging.
I’ve no impressive credentials to validate my writing, other than the years, decades, I spent reading across anything to do with fantasy, science fiction, paranormal, and just about everything that wasn’t part of the mundane world.

And, for not at least, I’ve settled on Urban Fantasy as my writing ‘home’. I hope you get as much pleasure out of reading them as I did when I could finally close each file and say ‘thank heavens that’s finished’. :)

This was a great series starter. There's a lot of very real pathos at the beginning -- the MC's life is really dark. From the crappy roommate to the crappy/kind boss, it feels very real (and very tragic). I loved the gray nature of the boss/MC relationship. Just at the point the story got a bit too dark for me, the author introduces a great sidekick/partner, who gave the MC some much-needed kindness/friendship. So I'm glad I didn't put the book down. There were mysteries to be plumbed in later books (like magical haircutting and the way vampires and other magical creatures work), so there's more to explore + I'll be picking up the next book in the series to see how the story plays out.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from BookSirens for giving my two cents. We meet batista Jane who doesn't remember who she was 5 years ago...she was dumped in a town and taken to emergency with no recollection of who she was and she's OK with that. However she gets visitors claiming to help her with her memory loss that turns out to be a crock until one day when an older woman comes in and tells her who she looks like and to stop taking wolfsbane as it caused memory lapses....OK. Jane agrees to mee that th4 next day. Jane's roomie is a weirdo who acts all macho and makes Jane's life a bit of hell...but hey it's a roof over her head. Next day she is stood up...go figure and then the cops show up asking questions. The next she knows is that the woman was found dead. Even weirder is an envelope from a lawyer stating she needs to contact them asap...weird bc she doesn't know any but concedes and goes. The woman left her instructions and if she passes her possessions are hers....WTH...she just met the woman...but just maybe it will help her figure out who she is. Drama, lies, coverups, oddball friendships makes this an interesting read.

Good

Jane Doe remembers nothing before the day she arrived at a hospital five years ago.
Then one day, a woman walks into her work place, claiming to know who she is.
Mysterious deaths, and an inheritance, lead Jane to discover that not only does she have a past, but that there is a magical world out there that she was once part of; and now Jane will have to do whatever it takes to get it all back!

This is the first in a series, and is a good albeit somewhat dark urban fantasy. The world building is good, the setup intriguing. There are a number of interesting characters as well, and a mystery that needs to be solved.
It’s an enjoyable read, by the end so much is revealed and yet still hidden, that you’ll find yourself puzzling it all out!

A mysteriously entertaining urban fantasy for fans of the genre!

Started strong, but lost steam as it went.

The story a little weird in that, while all the usual beats for an urban fantasy love interest are there, it's for a woman who becomes the MC's friends. I thought FOR SURE it was a queer romantic relationship (Tasha is pointedly described as sexy more than once), but they end up being gal pals instead. I would have preferred some clarity on that going in.

Jane is a barista and server who is barely making a living, sharing an apartment with a terrible excuse of a roommate. On top of all of this she is struggling with the fact that she doesn’t know who she is(quite literally). I liked the overall story the author was trying to tell, of her discovery of who she is and journey to figure these things out, but I feel the plot lacked substance and development. Characters seemed unrealistic. For five years Jane let everyone in town walk all over her and now she’s suddenly feisty and headstrong? Would have liked to see more of a progression here instead of a flipped switch. 5 years is a long time to see no change then… BAM, new attitude. World building was decent, could have used more descriptors, but much like Jane we are really thrown head first into it. Sometimes I felt they used the “people come here constantly to swindle me” bit a little to much. The story had potential, but overall fell short of expectations.

2.5/5

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

2.75*

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Possibly

Would you recommend?: Possibly

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Great read

This is a new author to me, and I seem to have found him by accident. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, different to what I would normally read, Highlanders Regentcy various. I stopped reading since Jan this year as my husband of 44 years passed away, so I just wanted something different to read. It's was intriguing to see how she dealt with the anomalies in her life looking forward to next book. I originated from Scotland, Ardrossan Ayrshire and now live in Lincolnshire, so it's good to know a local author. Good luck with future editions.

Broken Witch: The Blood fire Chronicles Book 1

Very interesting reading, A real page turner. The main characters Tasha and Jane will keep you wondering what they will do nexf. I found it hard to put down, just needing to no what was going to happen next. Would they ever find the guy who stole James memories, would she be able to get them back or did she really want to. It will keep you wondering till the end.
Definitely a .must read. Will keep you up thru The night wondering....

Broken Witch unbroken storyline

Its always a thrill to start a new series, hoping the writer can hold your interest enough to want more. This book fit and went above my expectations. The characters stories are fully flushed out and hold your interest throughout the whole story. Your given a complete progression from Janes sketchy beginning through to the end of the book. Supporting roles have a purpose and are not just fluff to fill the page count. Your given a whole world with good , evil and every fun thing in between. This is a must read!

The story follows Jane Doe as she goes from being a barista with amnesia to a feisty mage.

I felt like the story didn't revolve enough around the plot. There were way too many coffee stops and random characters. Her powers appear magically when she needs them, through almost no work on her own. It isn't really explained why "the big bad" stole her memories, other than to be a jerk. The MC is not very likeable.

I liked the sidekick, Tasha. And the world building aspects were solid.

I'd give this 3.5 stars.

Robin Marr comes to the rescue

In my quest to read 174 books in a year amd 9 books behind, I was in a reading funk and all my favourite authors had no new books for me

And then someone suggested Broken Witch. What a joy. What a story. Best of all? It is a series and I get to read more about Jane Doe. I may just hit my target yet.

From living with no memories, weird things happening with fire to meeting Tasha, this has kicked me out of the book doldrums - can not wait for the next one!

I'd say it's more like a 3.8 it 3.9 stars. Interesting take on witches, vampires and mages. I wish "Jane" would do a little more for herself instead of having someone she literally just met handle it all but she was likable. Betty was a confusing character because she seemed really bitchy then when she said goodbye she seemed like a completely different person. I would have given this book 4 stars if there were more meaningful interactions with the tenants

magical mayhem

A fun wacky adventure, with quirky magical characters, unpredictable surprises, and unexpected danger! Searching for her memory, as she doges murders, corrupt police, arson, and evil creatures stalking intent on murder and mayhem! She finds one friend who is slightly not human, former cop turner PI, who always has her back. They work together to solve the mystery, catch the bad guys, rescue the girl, and save each other’s life. Thank God for a girls BFF!

Great story

Didn't want to put the book down. Lots of twists and turns, always keeping you guessing. Jane Doe, barista, but what happened to her memory? Dumped in a small town with no memory and no idea how you lost your memory. Then someone shows up saying I think I know your real name and some of what happened to you, but someone kills her before she tells you much more than your real name.

memory loss

She no longer had a memory. She woke up in the hospital. They gave her a name of Jane doe, and that’s what she stuck with. When people show up and tell them, they know who she is she just tells them to get lost, and so many people so far telling her that. Then she meet somebody and that somebody gets killed after she was super rude to her, and then her life really takes off

A lot happening

an interesting take of an amnesiac given the chance to discover her past but having been scammed in the past, she isn't enthusiastic...then her contact is murdered and Jane gets a strange bequest. New friends and an unknown enemy...can she discovers the truth? There is a lot happening in this story and think that it is a cracking opener...with much more to come.

Wow! Really fast paced!!!

From start to finish you are on the edge of your seat! There are many twists and turns but they stay true to the story of Jane. This could be a great book 1 of a set or a trilogy. It would be fun to follow Jane's journey into things from the past that mature and carry on into her future.

Broken Witch

I really enjoyed this. An author who I had never heard of before and a synopsis that sounded interesting. Glad I tried it. Good character development. Good story line. Lots of action. I liked the way the main character learned about her powers. Not taking things for granted, not rejecting the idea of her having magical powers. Recommended

Interesting characters, good first of a series

This was good for a first of a series book. The storyline is interesting, and the author did a good job introducing us to a new setting/world. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Fascinating

Well written with an interesting and somewhat dark storyline well fleshed out characters come alive on the page. A glimpse of dark magic and things that hide in plain sight make this difficult to put down, recommended read, Baz.

Not such a plain Jane

Memories make us...or do they? Jane Doe, no family, a fiend for a roommate and no past she can recall. Everything changes when a stranger asks to meet with her. Magic, mayhem and murder are the results of that chance encounter.

Started really slow, I almost gave up on it and then it turned and got a lot better.

A lot of spelling mistakes, words out of order or completely missing on the Apple Books version but doesn’t affect reading that much.

Just wow

I wanted to feel sorry for Jane Doe but I couldn't. She was down and on her last go but found strength that got her through. How much would you look to reclaim your life?
Jane found a friend and a whole new world. I'm hoping any follow on books are just as good.

Wonderful Tale

Well crafted, well paced, well developed characters. Witch in a coffee shop with a cat familiar would be a cozy tale, this is all much more than a coffee shop cozy. Well with a read.
