I was born a warrior. Raised to kill. Trained for battle. Hardened for what would come.
All my life, I’ve known I have one job in this world: protect my little brother at all costs so he can fulfill his destiny to save the world. I’ve done it alone for seven years, but everything is about to change.
We're on the run again to a new city where I'll have to find work with no contacts. I need to find him a dragon pack, but I can't trust outsiders and I can't let anyone find out the truth about who and what we are.
And, of course, I have to do it all without being found. If they find us, it's over.
***** A new urban fantasy serial from a USA Today bestselling author and a double black belt in martial arts writing together under a new pen name!
The MFC left a lot to be desired. She was contrary just because, and every interaction she had with someone was basically the same: she’s suspicious of them and rude, she wants information, she stares at them until they give her the information. It leaves you wanting so badly to see her humbled.
It was so much fun! From the very beginning you get introduced to Roxi and she is THE ACTION HERO. Well trained, and ready to assess and kick*ss! She is protecting her brother and they have always been on the run. You immediately get pulled into the story and it is very hard to put it down and do mundane things like eat and you know work instead of read what happens next.
The story continues to unfold as they try to find a safe house in Austin, and quickly get immersed in Dragon politics. This story includes, vampires, werewolves, and so many more mythical creatures.
Roxi has to move fast and trust her well honed instincts.
Whew what a ride! I loved this book and got the 2nd immediately because this is one of my favourite new series. It has all the elements I love, found family, strong female main character, and the fight scenes? Those are real and so well orchestrated and written. Get. This. Book!
[24/77] ⤷ this is book 24 of 77 books i have downloaded for free on amazon kindle, so it may be time to finally go through them all. oh god, wish me luck.
i think it's really just me, but these have become so boring to me. all of them, something about it just...it's so unoriginal, even if i haven't read a story like that before. none of them really have anything worth while. it was an alright book.
Roxie works as an unregistered dagger which is basically a hired hand for certain work. She's also an Illieri warrior with training she received from her mother who died though unlike her mother, her magic has not manifested, so for all intents and purposes, she walks around as and considers herself human. Roxie is responsible for her younger brother Dash who's a rare egg born dragon and fated to be incredibly important one day as well as powerful.
The book opens when Roxie has been set up by someone who hired her to deliver an artifact and she fights her way out of that situation before going to the home she shares with Dash and taking off with him on the run. They've been doing so presumably for years because they have Isle after them who wants Dash, and they don't have much money or resources to help them outside of Roxie. Before she died, their mother had told Roxie all would be lost if the Illieri got to Dash before he reached his full potential. So they run from safe house to safe house and prepare for their final stop in Austin, Texas. In addition to Isle, Roxie is carting around a dragon shifter in Dash who needs the help of a pack as he nears his first shift. It's debilitating without a pack and Dash is suffering and feverish. Once they get to Austin though, Roxie and Dash have a couple of options for Dash's pack before going with Nova Force which is an unusual pack mixed of dragon and wolf shifters and witches. Most other groups consist solely of similar beings.
The rest of the book is Roxie refusing to be bound to the pack or the dagger vampire queen while hunting down leads and trying to solve the murder of a young boy who turns out not to be dead in the end. Roxie's mother gave her clues to the present and with that knowledge, Roxie saves this family from a djinn with some indication that they'll be needed in future in some way. Not to mention, some hints here and there about her attraction to Dare's new pack Alpha Adak. In this book, their interactions are mostly frustration for Adak since Roxie regularly refuses his orders and Adak is left a little confused about his growling response to thinking of Roxie with someone else.
I really liked Roxie, her character, and the way she handled herself. Even though Dash isn't her biological sibling, she doesn't see him as anything different and is more than willing to give her life so long as Dash survives. Roxie is resourceful and gets into lots of fights, but there isn't much explanation as to how she's able to take such a beating and keep coming without more recovery time. More could be explained that way. The book could also use an editor because there are some grammatical errors but mostly could use someone to correct some of the parts in the story that don't connect, like how Gransen knew Dash was her brother at first meet without some explanation as to how he came away with that knowledge or even for Roxie to at least wonder at it. There are also times I think it could've been improved by more information and less skipping of scenes. Roxie goes from being on the ground to back on her feet and choking an opponent with no transition which is jarring for the reader and made me go back a few times in the reading to make sure I had the imagery right in my mind.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and looking forward to seeing how the story continues.
I read this through Kindle Unlimited. There are a lot of new authors or other authors that I only read because it doesn't cost me anything beyond my KU subscription. It's a great way to try out new-to-me authors without risk. Sometimes, I'll read the first book or two of a series through KU and find that the rest of the series is only available for purchase. This is only the third time that I've purchased the next book in the series because I truly enjoyed my introduction to the author's 'world'.
The writing and storytelling flow well and the characters are unique and interesting. The world is a dystopian earth, but it's well-developed.
Roxie is a great main character. Aside from her tendency to proverbially 'cut off her own nose to spite her face' (which got to the point of annoying), she's a real heroine. She's got fighting skills but not over-the-top powerful. She's snarky but not to the point of being annoyingly abrasive. Her only goal in life is to protect her brother (adopted brother--her mother stole him from evil people so she's watched him grow up and has been taking care of him since her mom was killed protecting them). So she's tough, but she's a protector of the innocent. She's a mercenary for hire because that's what her mom taught her to be as a way to earn money while being on the run to keep her brother hidden.
Her brother doesn't really develop into a full character until toward the second half of the book, but as he came into his own, he showed maturity without being 'old beyond his years,' he's just a good kid who appreciates what his sister has done for him.
I haven't started the next book yet, but I did purchase it immediately after I finished this book because I really wanted to see more of Roxie. Excellent series.
Roxie is an African American warrior Heroine with bigger balls than most men and mythological creature. In this book her main focus is protecting her brother and getting him to a dragon pack before his first shift. Roxie's brother Dash is the key to the end of the Dystopian nightmare they're trying to stay alive in. I enjoyed the way the author had many characters they never over shadowed Roxie as it was from her point of view. At times Roxie was more hard headed which put her into a few dicey situations and her lack of trust caused her to shun help when she needed it most. Dash was pivotal in the plot but really didn't have a lot of play until the middle of the book. Though he was a main character he wasn't a overbearing character that overshadowed others in the story. Ghost may have been written as the cutest paranormal dog ever and thee awesome sidekick for Roxie. The voice of Roxie's mother was a constant in her head when she was in doubt especially since her mother's vision was the reason they were in Austin. The path Roxie was taking leading her to a goat and kids (read the book you'll understand the reference). This was an amazing book and has made me fan...now on to Book 2 in the series.
I received a copy of this book for review consideration
And I'm glad I did! It was exciting, fun, funny, action-packed, and offered some rich and compelling worldbuilding. Urban fantasy, but not in the world as we know it--a world where magic/the influx of magic in our world has had environmental consequences. Something I've never seen before!
The dynamic of the various factions (werewolves v witches v dragon shifters v vampires) had so many original slants that I never felt like I was reading the same book as a hundred others.
And Roxie is fantastic. She's got gumption, but never seems invulnerable or untouchable. She's got a lot of heart, a lot of sass, and a lot of ability to kick your butt from here to next week.
My biggest critique: there's so much focus on the action that it doesn't give the reader or character time to breathe. As soon as one fight ends, so does the chapter, jump to the next big event. I would love to have more reflection following the Big Revelation or a nasty fight. Some down time so we can process what just happened along with Roxie.
But even so, it kept me reading, and I look forward to the next book!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
DNF
Went off the MC, I didn't like the probable love interest and I didn't like the kid brother of the MC.
First time read the author's work?: Yes (under either of her pen names, she's also Lori Ryan)
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Action packed fun little read And while there were definitely some familiar elements and influences reminiscent of Kate Daniels, Reagan Somerset with a dash of GOT there were also enough new/different parts to keep it interesting. Like focusing on the guardian rather than the future hero/saviour. the whole setup/dynamic with her brother. The fmc being a WOC to name but a few things. The writing was alright, though I'm never gonna be fan of these 1st person POVs with the non-stop running commentary going on. Not fully sold on Adak yet. Waay too controlling and borderline condescending, just glad she hasnt lost her head over him yet (one of my biggest pet peeves h turning into a brainless idiot whenever she meets H). Although I have to say, with as much as she likes to toot her own horn and all the decades of training she's had, I really would've expected her to have had some some blindfolded training as well. The way she crumbled in that fight didn't feel consistent with the character. Curious to see how the overall story will continue to unfold
This book is the first in an exciting new-to-me urban fantasy series. I really enjoyed it. The storyline is clever, and the "myth" characters seem perfectly reasonable in the world, with weres who are believable in both guises, and thorough and interesting world-building. Can I mention that I love their designation as "myths"? To make it even better, there is a lovely, loyal dog. That and dragon shifters...What more do we need? Oh, a dynamic protagonist with purpose and passion and support characters well-fleshed and appealing. I will put a strong language warning out there. It is perfectly in keeping with the character and situations, but I know there are people bothered by that. If you can look past that minor detail, it is so worth it to read this book! Now I am off to start the second!
Roxie is looking for a pack for her adopted brother, who happens to be a dragon shifter, all while following the guidance of her fallen mother's visions. Thanks to the author for the review copy. This is an honest review and my opinion.
This is a wonderful urban fantasy novel with a kick-ass heroine who is looking for answers. There is an interesting variety of fantastical creatures in this world and the magic system is interesting. The fights are exciting, but more violent than I anticipated! I feel like the pacing was a bit awkward, though.
Overall, it's an easy read and I flew through it rapidly. I enjoyed the writing style! The ending was interesting and I am eager to continue the series.
This is my first book for this author duo and it’s pretty awesome! Roxie is a cool cat! She is amazing at fighting and even if she is a warrior she still has a heart. She also has no quit. Watching her fight through each situation, not just physically but mentally also makes it worth so much more. She isn’t just a killer because she can. She cares. Also- Ghost is ADORABLE!! I have a feeling we’ll learn a lot more about a lot of the characters. None are as simple as it seems. Full of mystery, action, suspense, intrigue and I’m hoping soon, maybe a little romance! Plus I can’t wait to see Dash grow!
I'm all for POC MCs in UF. We def don't have enough of them. Roxie is a likeable enough character that her 'i can do anything' attitude didn't get annoying. I'd love to see more backstory on how she was raised bc it was alluded to a lot and clearly has deep influences on how she acts now. One thing that I thought was interesting was the fact that the premise of this story is her trying to protect her brother and yet we rarely see her with him. She also made questionable decisions: she needed to find him a group so she takes a job and is surprised that he's gotten worse while she was gone?? Like why not go scope out other people and think about the job afterwards???
Read this now. If your fence sitting don't..read it
I have been in a book slump on and off. Either losing interest quickly or even after book 2 or 3. Not this series.
Kick butt heroine. Yes. Good world building yes. Hot maybe romantic lead yes.
Well written. Roxie is a great heroine. She's fiesty without being a B. Which sometimes fails to come across with other stories. I'm also leaving this review having read the 3 books that are released so far. They stay consistently good. Well written and characters stay strong and interesting. I'm waiting for the next story. Can't wait to read more.
I don't know what Roxie is...she's human or is she? She's certainly special with mad fighting skills. Her brother Dash is a Dragon and once again they're on the run for their lives. She's on the side of good, righting wrongs and hunting the baddies. Dash is a teen, learning the dragon ways. All her young life she's been watching over him, protecting him and now it's someone else's turn. Just when you think her life is about to settle, the author throws in more drama and death defying moments. This is one action packed story and I couldn't put it down.
Dagger For Hire, is a first rate story that introduced the reader to a unique world fashioned in the future, when “mystics” have come out and no longer hide their other forms. The authors have built characters we love and enjoy, they have created a story that makes the reader desperate to know what happens next. After reading the first book, it leaves us with many questions, and heading directly to book 2, “Broken Dagger” to find those answers. I loved the book and have another wonderful UF/PNR series to obsess over. Can wait for more books !
I was interested in this book from the beginning of it, just from the cover. I read it in under 2 hours. The fantasy apocalyptic world was an interesting topic of thought. The care that the main character had for her brother and was strong and the fact that she still doesn't know (but as a reader I see it) that she does have some divine power despite not being trained to receive it. Had to hope on and see when I could order the other books to find out what happens in the storyline as I had received this one as a gift.

Meh. Very unoriginal, clearly far too much martial arts research has been done because the name of each ick, throw, punch, etc., is provided whether it is relevant or not (it's not), the time line of the characters' pasts don't make sense, and the plot is predictable and not very interesting. World building not terribly good, and not original at all. Characters mildly interesting, no romance (a romantic interest, possibly, but nothing is even thought on page, let alone done, about a relationship), some props for non-white characters. Certainly wouldn't bother with another in the series.
I kinda got Patricia briggs-Mercy Thompson & Jim Butcher-Harry Dresden vibes. Enjoyed this book, I'm excited to read the next book. Interesting characters. MC-Roxie was funny & an underestimated heroine-can't wait to see how her storyline plays out-is she a witch warrior or something more. The storyline was intriguing. I did like the magic systems esp. with all the dragons, wolfs & witches. It was an easy urban fantasy read.
This was such a good book! It was sent to me as part of a pr package and I'm so grateful for it! The cover is beautiful, and story was fascinating and different. There are mythical beasts written in a slightly different way, there's action, and found family in many ways. There are some descriptions of gore, and bodily harm during combat, so if you're sensitive look out for that. The ending definitely left me with questions and made me want to read the 2nd book!
This was an action packed urban fantasy. There was some mystery, a little bit of humor, and a lot of attitude from the MC. The MC and her brother are on the run and she has to find him a pack before he has his first dragon shift which is imminent. That happens pretty early in the story and isn't as much of a plot point as I thought it would be. The main plot point was investigating the death of a child, rescuing said child, and hunting down a jinn. She has to go up against the rival dragon pack and it doesn't go well for her but she eventually comes out on top.
I truly enjoyed Roxie and her story and I’m so intrigued and interested in learning more about her and adak not too mention dash’s destiny !! Fast paced action packed and I do mean packed Roxie kicked ass and while she sometimes got her ass kicked in returned she never gave up , I’m off to see if book 2 is out now !!!
I couldn’t put the book down! Roxie is a no nonsense kind of girl. Raising her brother and keeping him safe all these years. The story development definitely surprised me but it a good way and I love how Roxie and Dashiell both grew into their own and still is. I definitely recommend.
I loved the characters and the action! Roxie is a serious bada$$!! I can’t wait to read what other mysteries she encounters and learn more about the people hunting her brother.
I honestly thought I wouldn't like it at first because the writing style can be likened to a movie that changes from scene to scene without a smooth transition. I feel that it was written this way to get in a lot of information in to the reader. I also am not a huge fan of the first person pov. BUT I devoured this book it was so good because, I am attached to the characters I need to know what happens in the next book that qualifys as a good read to me but I am so heartbroken with the ending 💔 😢. BUT now i have no choice but to get the second book so good for Lori 🤣😻 7/5.!!
Kept me reading and interested. Good story telling, great characters. It kept my interest and focus. No romance, just a good story. Already downloaded the next book in this series
