London 1998. A young, murdered actress. A predatory American film producer. DC Ruth Hunter and her partner, DC Lucy Henry, find themselves embroiled in the dark and sleazy side of the entertainment business, where it’s more than looks that kill.
Ruth and Lucy are called to the brutal killing of young actress and it seems that her murder might be connected to a cover-up of serious sexual misconduct in London’s film industry. However, when the investigation is thwarted at every turn, they begin to wonder if they will ever solve the case.
When a lucky break turns their attention to a man suspected of stalking the actress, Ruth and Lucy think they now have the prime suspect in their sights. With the clock ticking, will they be able to collect enough evidence to charge the man before he escapes abroad?
Yet another "unputdownable" novel from Simon, full of twists and turns. Bought this on kindle yesterday and finished it this morning. Next two novels in the Hunter series are on order, can't wait to read them. Thank you Simon.
I was just unimpressed with the writing and buyability of this story. And I started to get quite annoyed with one of the leads who made me more incredulous as things went along. I don't think I'll continue with the 4th book.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Audible Plus, and “An Imitation of Darkness: DC Ruth Hunter,” Book 3, by Simon McCleave, narrated by Rachel Atkins, is a prime example of its excellence. As a fan of British books, I was thrilled to discover this hidden gem, which combines intricate storytelling with phenomenal narration. Atkins’ performance is truly impressive, bringing each character to life with perfect dialects and a captivating delivery. McCleave's writing is deviously delicious, weaving a complex and gripping story that held my attention from start to finish. I'm amazed it took me so long to discover this series, but I'm grateful it was available in the Audible Plus catalogue at no extra cost. I've already chosen another book from this series, eager to experience the seamless collaboration between McCleave and Atkins once again. If you're a fan of British thrillers, do yourself a favor and dive into this exceptional series – you won't be disappointed.
As with the first two books in this series, you won't go wrong buying any of these books. The only thing I'm sorry about is that there is only one more book in this series. The story line and plot/sub plots in this book revolves around a young actress, drugged and murdered which happens on the very first pages of the book.
However the main thrust with this book as with the other two is DC Ruth Hunter and her side kick Lucy. They and there life are a significant part of the book and just adds to the story line of the books.
This is a series that you really need to start with book 1 and read forward, otherwise you will lose much when reading book 2 or three.
I thoroughly enjoy the Ruth Hunter Snowdonia series for sheer thrills and spills entertainment. However, what made the first two books of this prequel series so outstanding were the calmer and more thoughtful pacing and plotting, together with social history observations. Unfortunately, these elements were entirely lacking from this third book which I found so rushed and over the top that it failed to hold my interest. I hope Simon returns to a more considered style for his next book in this series, but that's just a personal opinion as this book seems to be extremely popular with other readers.
This third book in DC Ruth Hunter’s back story follows the murder of a young actress. The plot twists and turns as Ruth and her partner Lucy follow up leads to find the murderer. As with the previous two books, we get more of the private lives of the detectives in Peckham police station, building up a picture of their lives. I kept thinking that I knew who the murderer was, and then more information would cast doubt. Even at the last page I find myself wondering when the next instalment of the story will be published.
Yet another great offering from Simon McCleave. This is the 3rd prequel to the Snowdonia books, where Ruth is still a DC in Peckham. A beautiful actress is killed in her flat and the team at Peckham need to find her killer. After ending up down a number of dead ends they eventually discover who their killer is but then right at the end of the book is a twist. This book will leave you wanting more.
Really enjoyed this book. I find the back stories of the characters fascinating and add to the interest of all that is going on. There is Ruth and her love interest as well as Lucy and hers, although this time she may have bitten off more than she can chew. Then there is Gaughran and his relationship with his Dad. All that going on as well as the murder of an actress which is leaving them perplexed. A great read.
A young actress is murdered, a variety of suspects, even the most likely, seem to have a solid alibi. Not that all are willing to give the truth at first interview. Ruth is unable to let go of the idea that someone who appears to have a solid alibi, has something to hide. Whereas Lucy has fallen for one of the cleared suspects, having split from Harry. All will be revealed!
Ruth and her colleague Lucy have their own personal issues here, but they still manage to solve a very involved case, though not without some dangerous scenes for them. The tension is high throughout and there's a great little teaser/twist right at the end. The fact that I've already pre-order the next book in this series says it all really.
Love this book. Simon keeps you on the edge of your seat as you try to work out what is happening and then when you think you've got it there is a twist! Love the personal connection to the character, the glimpses into their lives whilst the main story is told keeps you connected to the characters and draws you in to them. Can't wait for the next one.
Simon doesn't let his fans down with this thriller and as always he leaves you wanting more. I wonder if we have seen the last of Marcus as it could have been Polly driving the car OMG now that's an opening. Many thanks Simon you have made a fan out of this old covid cast off can't wait for the next volume 😀
Another great ,prequel i was dissapointed with the delayed release time of the river seine killings but these early stories of dc ruth hunters beginnings i think are as enjoyable as the current offerings i dont know how simon is so prolific in writing these to be honest bring on the next one cant wait.
The book kept you guessing from beginning to end with twists and turns. It's could to have a read that is not predictable and challenges you for its duration. Didn't want to put it down till it was finished. A real page turner. Best in the series.
Another solid book in this series. I do have to say, I don't really care for the narrator of these audiobooks, though. She can make the women sound shrill (especially Lucy) and she makes the New Yorkers sound like stereotypes, and not in a good way (hypernasal, cliched "Jewish" accents...not the same as an NYC accent).
An Imitation of Darkness: A DC Ruth Hunter Murder Case.
this was an extraordinary book to read. Very dark in places but a real teaser of who was who. I can thoroughly recommend reading this book if you like murder mysteries. It was that until the last sentence!! Thank you Simon McCleave
Fantastic read! I’ve loved the full series so far. I love the fact that Lucy can be a bit rogue and o feel myself cringing at her antics but also enjoy it at the same time! I love the fact these books aren’t all happy endings with a little bow. Always page turning to get to the next part I. The investigation…… anyway I’ve got the next in the series to go!
A great procedural as well as thriller. DC Hunter has seen it all early in her career, no wonder she can figure things out quickly! Thanks Simon fir another great book- please keep ‘em coming!!!
Ruth works with Lucy and the team to find out who killed Tash only for the investigation to take a personal and dramatic turn. Couldn't put the story down and was sad to finish it!
I really enjoyed these books, the characters are really well written and enjoyable to read I w would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys crime books.can't wait for the next one.
The team get involved in a tangled web and Lucy nearly gets it. A page turning story with the reader and CID team sent down the wrong track. But final twist on the final page?
Another great story in the DC Hunter murder series and a one that once you have read it you are left craving for more. Well crafted plot with an ending that leaves you wondering what next.
Another brilliant page turner from Simon McCleave', mixing police life and romance in equal measure with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader enthralled to the last sentence.
How bad can one person mess up come on Lucy you're better than that. Ruth was her brilliant best again. This was a real page turner cleverly pointing you away from the killer
Reasonably predictable given the fact that the police officer hooks up with someone….its obviously bound to be the murderer! And similar case in the snowdonia ones but otherwise I enjoyed reading it!

It was such an immersive audio book narrated by a female! I really enjoyed the English accent, the story plot, and the characters. And this is my first read with a new library card! I registered with it on Libby and I have no regrets! I am really pleased with the experience! Highly recommend!
