In the year 2050, Earth makes first contact. By 2052, the war is over. We lose.
As a development platform for desperately needed advanced technology, the experimental starship Foresight is the greatest hope humankind has to flee the alien hordes. For test pilot Captain Nicholas Shepherd, the success of the program is even more personal. Successful completion means delivering his wife and son safely off-world and leaving the war behind for good. But when Foresight suffers a critical malfunction during her final scheduled flight, what should have been a minor setback becomes a major fight for survival.
With his family caught in the crossfire, Nicholas realizes that the flawed starship offers the best chance to escape. It isn’t long before even the frantic evacuation turns sideways, and he discovers that not only is the war harder to get away from than he thought, but Foresight is more than just a prototype.
Much, much more.
Joined by an unintended crew of survivors, Nicholas is about to embark on an impossible mission that will take them far beyond the outer reaches of space. If he fails, humankind won’t just be lost.
M.R. Forbes is the author of a growing number of science-fiction series including Rebellion, War Eternal, Chaos of the Covenant, Stars End, and the Forgotten novels. Having spent his childhood trying to read every sci-fi novel he could find (and write his own too), play every sci-fi video game he could get his hands on, and see every sci-fi movie that made it into the theater, he has a true love of the genre across every medium. He works hard to bring that same energy to his own stories, with a continuing goal to entertain, delight, fascinate, and surprise.
He maintains a true appreciation for his readers and is always happy to hear from them.

I tried this on a whim as I sometimes try some unknown scifi author. It don't know if I'll pick up another. The 3 stars are for the action but I'm disappointed at how empty shell like the characters were so far, even the main character Nicholas. This kind of writing style in that respect doesn't lure a reader in. It doesn't hold you glued to the story. It doesn't make you care nor suck you in though it's imaginative.
The alien part at the end was pretty ridiculous and ruined the end part as well as the thing about Harry. Over the top. Not the kind of scifi I was looking for, no. Tastes vary.
When you build an entire universe one thing is certain, the stories are endless. A great start to a new series. Set before the exodus with an experimental FTL capable ship and a ragged team of survivors. Even when all seems hopeless, Forbes always delivers hope. Loved it!
The work is formulaic, lacks substance, and, worst of all, doesn't even meet the bar of "easy read disposable sci-fi"
I found Forbes writing style to be jagged and jarring in the same way of fingernails on a blackboard. It's not that his prose is bad per se, it's more of a nagging sense of familiarity that comes with each sentence. An uneasy feeling of "I've seen this before" that breaks the reading immersion spell and leaves me unsatisfied. My brain would gnaw on the problem of "from whom is Forbes stealing?" instead of letting me enjoy the story.
I finally twigged that his characters and plot are more-or-less a Stargate ripoff mashed up with "The Dark" of Barbara Hambly fame. Which could be a lot fun in competent hands. I'm sad to report that those hands are not M. R. Friend's hands
If you liked Candyland Sci-fi, then this series is okay for you. But after the second book, you simply just don't care enough for keeping up with the confusing and lame layered Multi-Verse scenario. And the characters are like soft Korean sticky rice. No edge. All the main characters are just perfect and their inter-dialogue is like reading a Eagle Scout's resume. +++Spoilers+++ Managed to kill off the one interesting character Caleb. I couldn't finish this. Its that lame. You simply don't care enough to continue even after the BIG reveal -- the one cool character is an alien. You see it coming a mile away.
The only saving grace is that the universe and story are incredibly interesting, but Forbes writes characters like this is a first draft of a middle school student. It feels as though he went to a random adjective generator and decided the first word that popped up would be the sole trait of his characters. Worse, he forgets what he said a paragraph prior. "Extending the spines will turn off the shields." next paragraph "with the spines extended and ready to fire, the shields took a hit." Bruh, they're on or off. Follow your own rules.
The characters are also stupid for the sake of a plot device. One is supposed to be a brilliant physicist. I should not be able to figure out that the book involved the multi-verse half a book before she does. *Brilliant PhD out-thought by layman* is a lame description of the book.
I quit half way through the third book. I cannot put up with the low quality character writing any more. The protaganist is a hero Marrine, USSF pilot that gets pushed around by everyone and has no idea WTF he is doing at any given time...acting super firm and establishing a chain of command and then just being overridden by everyone else. They all do what they want, independent of what they have agreed to.
I deeply regret the time I invested in this series. I hope I can save you the time as well. I think you would be better served by watching Game of Thrones, Season 8 and trying to make sense of it than reading this dribble.
I think I'm going about this universe backwards. I started with the most recent spinoff series, where the main character was Caleb Card. In this series he's a side character and Nick Shepherd is the main character. It's a lot of the same kind of thing, but with a better explanation of the overall story arc. A visit to Forbes' website gives the preferred reading order - so I'll probably go back and start towards the beginning and work my way forward until I catch up.
In the meantime, this is pretty good. Aliens have taken over earth and are winning a war of attrition. A few get out in a small experimental spaceship that ends of getting attacked and then sucked into a time slip. Turns out there's something called The Stack, which translates to infinite alternate universes. I do love me a good alternate universe. But apparently there's a master plan and our crew has to make that happen. Good characters and the narration by Dave Jackson is pretty good.
Interesting start to a series, (well, not really the start, since there's several series that feed into/from this one), but as a first in series, it's pretty good, and I'd like to read more, especially since I've read others in the universe tied to this one, and they were somewhat interesting, this one may show more depth in the other series I've read, and make them more interesting as a result. I like how this one developed, so I suspect future books in this particular series will be just as interesting. Good stuff if you're a scifi fan, and especially if you like multiuniverse/timeline stories, though that part isn't really revealed until the end, so sorry if I spoiled anything, but since it's not really relevant to this book, I don't think it's really a spoiler.
I like to seek out authors new to me and books that stretch my mind. M.R.Forbes amazing Sci-Fi series “Forgotten Space” begins with book 1; Foresight”.
From beginning to end this book stretches your imagination, goes in brand new directions, and blasts off into the unknown. taking you along for the ride.
Earth invaded by a species bent on their destruction but it soon becomes something much more, steps and levels ahead of other Sci-Fi series. Pick up your copy and fly along with Frank, Captain Shepard, Yaz and all of the rest of their merry band of mismatched souls.
Let me start by saying this is a well written story with interesting characters from a talented author. However, it follows nearly the exact formula of the previous dozen books in the Forgotten Universe series. Save your time and pick up something original. I really like this author, but in my opinion he has gotten far to comfortable at the expense of his creativity. I selected the book specifically because it did not mention it was part of the connected universe on the cover or in the synopsis.
The Forgotten series is replete with fullness and thrilling adventure. However this is the first book where I have encounter a protagonist that I can’t stand. Yay,,, she’s a pompous, condescending, snot. Nicholas' character deserved a more supportive partner, Yaz reminds me of All the primary scientists determined to reach answers at the expense of everyone else, lacking any moral fortitude. I really hope I don’t have to contend with Yaz, she ruins my enjoyment….
Forbes does it again! Another amazing series set in the Forgotten universe. There's enough action to keep the pace going. Plenty of new characters to get to know and wonder if they'll survive. And plenty of mystery and Easter eggs for fans to find and wonder over. The biggest question of all: who is Grimmel, really, and what does he want?
I took off one star for having using the wrong word. It only happened a couple of times, but it was enough to notice that he needed a better editor.
I'm a very fast reader,, and while it doesn't bother me when reading print books, when I'm reading on my kindle where the print is smaller, single spacing after the end of the sentence is annoying.
Just something to think about if you put out an e-book.
This is mediocre at best. The story line is boringly linear: go to point A, kill aliens, go to point B, kill aliens, go to point C, kill aliens. It's like reading a video game. No subplots, no psychology, nothing of real value. I completed the book nonetheless to find it was not even a self-contained story but more like chapter in a series. Disappointing through and through, probably won't pick up another one from this author.
I have read all of the Forgotten books and knew this was next. Started a bit slow, but each of the other initial books did the same as characters were introduced, but as soon as familiar names popped up I was hooked again. I now look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series. Well done!
The earth is being overrun by space alien organic killing machines while the Marines fight to protect a lab where the AI software is being developed that will guide the starships that are to be used to evacuate the people. Then things start to worse. A great read.
Starting at the end of the Trife attack, we are introduced to familiar names of the Forgotten universe. Classic , exciting battles as the new faces try to figure out what they have on their hands. Excellent ending, leaving you eager for the next book!
M. R. Forbes' "forgotten" universe is broad and varied, but at the same time it's familiar. Different characters, different quests, but the same enemy Until now. Just when you think you know what's what, what you think you know is wrong. What?
This was an enjoyable read. There is plenty of action that keeps things moving along. The main character is likable, but I would prefer he be more knowledgeable about the craft he flies. It would also be nice to read a hero drama where the hero isn’t doing something he shouldn’t. That’s why I titled this “space cowboy.”
I really enjoyed this book. There a bunch of twists and surprises along the way which kept the action going. The characters were interesting, there is high tech action and toys, aliens, and just lots of fun. I definitely recommend this book and am glad it is part of a series as I want to find out what happens next.
Well book one has left me with a lot of unanswered questions, why is Luke needed and can he be brought back from the dead? I am sure that book two will answer some of the questions.
As always MR. Forbes does an amazing job of telling a story and leaving you hungering for more. This latest novel does just that. The statement "I hungerrrr" could not fit better to the ending of the book.
As usual this prequel is a great read that is a page turner The excitement is non stop. The characters are superbly done. Every single book he has written is the best. Can't wait to see how he handles this
A simple story, albeit with relatable characters, morphing into a multiverse wide puzzling, mind bending, epic saga. My new sci-fi addiction. Time to binge read the next book.
I truly enjoyed reading this book, it kept in aged in reading constantly. I did not want to put it down and can't wait to read the next. I would recommend this book to all who enjoy this genre.
How can mankind be successful against an enemy that can track them thru subspace? I can't wait to read book two! What else can the Foresight do for us? How can man defeat this enemy?
A talented combat/test pilot, his beautiful scientist wife, a mysterious old man, and a ship that can do so much more than just fly... Against an ancient alien with god-like powers. Wow!
Slow uptick from the beginning. The tragic story line builds, for the human race unless the current human team succeeds in learning how they fit into this life and death struggle.
