One Halloween isn't enough for the town of Fullmourn, so they decided to have two. The New Halloween happens as winter becomes spring each year. Still, instead of dressing up to keep away ghosts and ghoulies, the point of New Halloween is to keep the evil fae at bay.
It's a holiday that terrifies Loftus because he knows better than to cross the wild woodland creatures. Some of them have terrible and frightening powers. Loftus is lucky the curse inflicted on him isn't worse.
Of course, the town's people think this is all just a fun bit of folklore. So, they all dress up as either sparkly fairies or terrifying demonic fae creatures and have a giant festival to celebrate.
When someone dies at the festival, Hazel finds herself haunted again. The spirit claims they were killed by a fae monster, but Hazel isn't so sure. After becoming a witch, she believes the existence of the fabled beasties is entirely possible, but could there be a more… human explanation for the murder?
Sara Bourgeois is a Midwesterner through and through. She spends her time writing, reading, herding cats, and standing in her driveway during tornado warnings. (You can't see them from the basement.)
Since no blurb was included on Goodreads, I'll copy and paste the blurb from Amazon in a spoiler:
I liked that the MC Hazel was fairly fleshed out. Even though I didn't read the first book, I still felt like I got to know her over the course of the book.
As for the paranormal element, I thought it was pretty well done. Hazel can see and talk to ghosts who have something to resolve in this world before crossing over, but the ghosts aren't convenient characters that give her all the clues to solve the mystery.
It's similar with her mouse companion Loftus. He helps her but doesn't give her the clues to solving everything. He also wasn't an annoying animal companion either. Sometimes, I find it a bit hard to read the voices of talking animal companions in cozies but I didn't feel this way about Loftus at all.
However, I felt that the mystery ended pretty abruptly. To me, it wasn't a satisfying ending, but I don't think it was helped by how much focus was placed on plot points other than the mystery. There's a lot of focus on Hazel, a potential love triangle, her work as a funeral director, and the sudden appearance of an old high school friend and less on the mystery itself.
The mystery felt a bit secondary to the other parts of the story... but this is a cozy mystery. To me, the mystery should be one of the main, if not the main plot in a cozy mystery and I didn't think that was the case with this book.
This book works as a standalone. You can read it if even if you haven't read the other books in the series.
It started out as a great sequel to the first book. Hazel and Rook were so adorable until things started going south... First a love triangle (loathe them on principal) and then Peyton showed up. It all got very messy and very middle school after that very quickly. The thing that annoyed me the most about Peyton was how much of a doormat Hazel turned herself into for her... The case itself got somewhat lost in all the personal drama, it almost seemed like the culprit was selected willy-nilly at the end based on who'd provide the biggest shock factor and there were just way too many unresolved things, situations, questions. Not just the overall arc, character development/story either. But things from current or previous cases. Also, the book could've done with same serious editing, half finished words, incomplete sentences, switching names - more then once a character was referred to by another characters name. So yeah, I would've loved to continue Hazel's journey, but love triangles are an absolute no-go for me and I'm not fully sold on the overall incomplete feel of everything.
I'm really liking this series. Hazel inherits a Funeral Home in the first book in the series A Witch Named Hazel and she is still learning the ins and outs even though she worked at the morgue in another city. Hazel sees ghosts and tries to help them move on...but sometimes they can't because they have unfinished business to take care of... Fullmourn is holding another Halloween and the funeral home helps out by cooking food at the festival. Hazel doesn't quite understand it is rather comical when Rook explains what they do during the festival. Costumes are bought. And of course there is a murder... Hazel, of course, runs her own investigation into who did the killing. One hitch someone from her past shows up and Hazel feels that she has to help her out. Can we talk about the covers?! I love the covers for this series...they are fun and quirky! The colours are wonderful and it captures your attention If you like witchy cozy mysteries you will enjoy this series
Fullmourn loves Halloween so much they have it a second time. Rook & Hazel cook burgers, chicken & hot dogs for tbe town but when hated mortgage broker, Annette Lot is fatally stabbed in the Haunted Forest the festivities end. Then Hazel's investigative work begins. Complicating matter is her high school friend showing up at the funeral home, suitcases in hand. Peyton is running from her abusive cop husband. Between her & Annette's ghost making demands, Hazel's in a gizzy. Plus she & Rook are getting closer but Sheriff Nico asks her for a date. However, solving the murder is at the top of Hazel's list. Not least so the woman's ghost will leave her alone. Very enjoyable entry in the Crafty Witch series. I hope it continues for long ti.e.
I like that more backstory is provided for Hazel. Her fairy mouse familiar, Loftus, isn't very present which is a pity. More background on Rook is needed, especially if a love triangle is in the works; I really like him, especially since he at least never seemed swayed by something shiny and new. The addition of frenemy, Peyton, adds tension and intriguing possibilities. The murder mysteries progress nicely until the rushed and abrupt resolution. The series looks to be heading in a promising direction, and, as a side note, the beautiful cover art deserves a mention.
It’s an easy read with likable characters in a different setting than so many other cozy mystery murders. My only problem with it is the grammatical errors including once using the wrong characters name that threw me for a few seconds. The author does seem to completely wrap up the mystery in the last three pages. But on the whole I really enjoyed the characters and the story.
I have read all in the series, so far. Each book has been better than the last. Stories are becoming more complex and fun. Characters are becoming solid and complete..I'm excited about reading the next book. Who will she choose? Is Peyton her friend or enemy? So mote it be!
All That's Hallow is well written. While reading, one would find themselves involved in multiple mysteries, budding relationships, and deceit. Although the book is a quick read, it leaves the reader begging for more.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The next book looks like my last book I will read in the series. I dislike books that have a wishy-washy main character. She can't decide who her love interest should be. I am over that plot device. So if it continue I am done reading the series. It is well written and fun but just feels so juvenile.
Hazel's life gets even more complicated in this book. I love the idea of a second Halloween and the twist the author puts on it instead of just being just a carbon copy is great. Add in all the other things going on in her life and you have a very enjoyable story.
The most hated woman in town was murdered and she's going to make Hazels life miserable till she solves the murder. Her best friend from high school suddenly shows up to complicate Hazels even further.
I love this series. I very highly recommend this series. If you like some ghosts thrown in with your witch and a love interest or interests, you will love this one.
This is a good book! I think there were a lot of elements that could of gone somewhere way cooler, but it wrapped up too soon. I would like to see more of Loftus! One of my fave authors! Thank you for a good read!
Great story. Wonderful characters and so lovable. I wish I could move there! Cannot wait to read third book in the series. I'm wondering who Hazel will be with Room or Nico. I'd rather it be Nico
Hazel lives in the Funeral Home she inherited and is interested in two men. But she gets sidelined with murder again, and the ghosts want her to solve their mysteries. Easy read and entertaining.
This book was a quick, light read. Interesting storyline, but seemed to end rather abruptly. I'm hoping there is a bit more development of the characters and more depth to the plot in the next book.
Arc review I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. In fullmourn brook and hazel own Holloway funeral home . hazel is a witch with a fairy mouse and she can talk to ghost so when there are people that need her help she is on the case. Awesome story
So many mysteries to solve in this cozy! Some will be carried over to the next book, so be prepared. But it’s all worth it, because this is a great series!
This is a well written and has well developed/loveable characters. Very well told story and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
Love this series. Hope it continues for Hazel and her friends. 2nd book took a long time to come but enjoyed it. Enjoyed the other book about 2 Halloweens in fullmourn and a fae killer. Great series.
Not a bad story, but not what I expected. From an entertaining first book we have what feels like a completely different story line.
From a reluctant newbie witch in a cozy mystery we have suddenly been immersed in an urban fantasy battling dark powers with a magical backstory and lack of continuity since the end of the first book. I was disappointed in not getting another fairly lightheaded cozy mystery.
