Wat een geweldig prentenboek! Echt een verfrissende en originele stijl! En met momenten echt grappige en absurde tekeningen 🙂 Ik wordt er helemaal vrolijk van! Het is niet echt voorleesmateriaal maar het is wel een boek waar je in kan blijven ontdekken.

Ik zag ook net dat de cover voor bepaalde landen gecensureerd is… 😂 zoek de verschillen … 🙂

Een OK boek maar erg vreemd soms over het strand en alles wat daar zoal gaande is op een dag. Van de vroege vissers tot badgasten en vreemde gasten tot avondwandelingen. Ik vond het leuk om te zien wat er zoal op dit strand gebeurde en ik moest lachen om hoe druk het was, ah ja, daarom ga ik inderdaad niet meer naar het strand. XD Maar ik vond het soms gewoon iets te absurd voor mijn smaak. Er waren echt hele vreemde dingen gaande, van dieren met spieren en strakke speedos tot vreemde wezens die rondliepen en zo waren er nog meer dingen die ik gewoon erg apart vond. De art stijl van het boek was ook niet helemaal mijn ding (en ik hoop ook dat die gast aan het begin een dokter vindt, van dat is niet normaal. XD).

Originally published in Spanish, this picture book is one of those that necessitates a closer or a second look in order to appreciate it. Each memorable double-page spread illustrates life on the beach from early in the morning when fishermen and fisherwomen set out to sea all the way through to the end of the day when everything shuts down and the beach is only populated by those who enjoy being out late. Beams from a lighthouse shine through the final scene as all is silent. This dawn-to-dusk retrospective is captivating, especially since there are unexpected creatures, including elephants and a camel, in some of the pictures, as well as imaginary creatures. While there are only a handful of seagulls in the opening pages, they proliferate as the hours pass, pestering those individuals who are bringing in their catches from the sea, and even pooping on some of them. As the sun rises, the beach becomes increasingly crowded until close to 4 o'clock, the entire beach is covered with people and their accouterments. (I, for one, would have left long before it became that crowded.) One of the noticeable aspects of these beachgoers is the lack of eyes or facial expressions for the most part. A few other points worth noting are the many skin colors on the beach, the many different sizes of bodies and swimwear, some wearing board shorts, swim dresses or briefs or bikinis with bellies hanging over them. There are also couples embracing rather enthusiastically, unusual pastimes for those seeking a thrill, and a doglike creature peeing outside a tent late at night. The Chilean illustrator has certainly captured what life on a popular beach during the summer time must be like. Youngsters will enjoy looking carefully at each illustration to find those unusual creatures and happenings and maybe dreaming of their own day at the beach.

People and animals, both realistic and imaginary, enjoy the beach throughout a long day in summer. From the early morning crew going out to fish, to sunbathers and swimmers in the bright of day, to the late night denizens, this undulating shoreline is the setting for many activities that are a delight to explore. Brief text on each double page spread indicates the time of day, but the fun is in examining the pink, yellow and brown people and animals and their joyful use of the beach. People are mostly faceless, with funny blobs of hair. Some animals are clothed and other are not, but they seem to have equal footing with humans in this world. I was pleased to see a variety of body types and couple pairings.

The striking palette of matte blue, yellow, red and brown/gray evokes a summer/nautical vibe. Readers will enjoy examining the activities of the pinheaded, blobby haired people – there’s a supernaturally tall guy with extraordinarily long legs sunning himself in his BVDs, an animal water skier pulled by a boat with people in it, a guy peeing on a buoy, as well as a hairy monster among the sunbathers and a dog walking a crocodile on a leash. What fun to enter the singular world of this whimsical beach and its denizens!
