Book two

Mistakes: Again this book is in need of a seriously good editor. The author has again rushed to cram a lot of different things into one book instead of taking time to explore and flesh out any of the many things going on. I listed 18 mistakes on Goodreads.

Plot: Pirate hunting, base taking, but never bothering to keep. Starting a civil war, but we don't stay on that long before we are discovering a long lost city. Hey I know lets join a guild that doesn't benefit us in any way! Multiple fights that they clearly state they can't handle yet due to low levels, yet they rush in and wreck everything in their path with no problem!
Why didn't they take the time to keep hunting pirates and awaken the entire crew? We have seen how well this pays off.

Characters: The MC is a super OP soul vampire mage that shows no concern for the npc characters on his ship, but will go out of his way to protect the awoken npc.

3/10 The constant opening of different gigantic stat pages was annoying and used to pad the page count. They all needed to be condensed.

This is a hard book to review. Book 1 had a freshness to it, even if it was more than a little chaotic and filled to the brim with stat sheets.

Book 2 starts off the same, but over time becomes overwhelmed by all the new elements being added which creates even more chaos. We start out simple enough: Lox has his magical boat, and they take on the quest to free the kingdom of the mad king and replace him with the much more reasonable prince. They fight pirates, and then because that's not enough, they fight an entire pirate hideout filled with a dozen ships.

Along the way they meet other privateers. If the story had stayed on that trajectory, I would have been happy and really enjoyed it. We would have had times to sink our teeth into the storyline, with a normal payoff at the end. In other words, a typical book.

That doesn't happen. Soon they're being chased by a horde of the kingdom's privateers, and they escape to an island that has an underground lake.

Now the quest to remove the mad king is forgotten, and they're on a new quest to free the underground city which has been taken over by undead.

Then PKers show up, and it all goes to heck in a handbasket.

Before all that happen, the cracks were beginning to show. Lox is all over the place, moving from his magic to his soul vampire skills to his boat skills and back again. Personally, it was too much, and I say that as a fan of LitRPG. Also, weren't the stat sheets supposed to disappear in book 1 since he became fully alive in this new world? I distinctly remember reading that.

Nope. The stat sheets increase in book 2.

Moving on to other things. The editing is not up to the standard I've come to expect from Aethon. The stat sheets probably should be shoved to the end of the chapter so I can ignore them (I already do that anyway). The plot (IMO) should be tightened up to focus on one or two things so we can have the payoff at the end.

Everything is happening so fast that it's hard to keep track, and then we're off to something new. And while Lox is a strong character and does die from time to time, he's becoming OP. All these various spells and abilities he pulls off are oh so hard, but he does it time and again.

And why are we supposed to care about PK'ers? The second chance players will be spending eternity in this new world, and while the NPCs are vulnerable, the only one I even remotely care about is Vannessa, because she's the only one the story spends any time on.

So instead of getting a big payoff from completing the mad king quest, or the new underground city quest, or the original quest to bring the various duchies in to support the prince, or the quest to meet the city of magic users (I forget the name), etc, we have no payoff.

Which is disappointing.

I really dislike giving out anything less than four stars, and when it happens I usually don't leave a review. Because I wanted to like this series, I'm making an exception. 3/5*

For me, a thing that makes or breaks a story is the characters, and this book has got some great characters. That said, my thoughts, as I was nearing the end of this book, is I feel like it was written by a six-year-old hopped up on sugar. The first book had me on the fence, there were a lot of things that I liked about it, but a lot of things I thought were troubling with the world-building and the pace of the story (usually things I can overlook). These problems are compounded in the second book (spoilers ahead), where we start in a cool game world where the main character (half-cat soul vampire magical engineer) is trying to figure out how to live in this new universe, found an epic ship, defeats unbeatable dungeon, brings a woman to consciousness who then seduces him, joins a civil war which is quickly turned city strategy game where his nemesis from his old life suddenly shows up in-game at somehow a higher level than he was at the time even though he's gone through crazy dungeon grinding and other unheard-of shenanigans, is quickly thrown to the side until he shows up a few weeks later with an epic ship of his own, and a pk guild full of disposable murder hobos, oh and the ship is even more epic than the MC's ship, and the dude has once again somehow gained levels to compete with the mc and his party who have been battling things 10+ levels above themselves for several weeks straight, while also gaining crazy warlock powers, only to be easily dealt with again, UNTIL! Yeah, so... fun characters, a lot of flaws, really good premise but a little too CW/soap opera-y for me I think.

I feel that this fantasy-isekai-VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) book series is missing a purpose among a lot of other things. Playing an online game can be a purpose but the author doesn't really have objectives, to develop into plot arcs to be able to create a viable story, for a book series. Playing for the game's sake, does not really a book make. Most play to conquer the game, to gain a level or a set of levels, to gain a skill, ability or set of abilities. Others play for revenge, to be the best player on the rankings, to get to the new areas in a game first. This has barely any game-like clichés or tropes. Main character has a 3-4 member retinue. Groups usually are anywhere from 6-12-24 or 96. Main character and group join a guild, without getting the usual quests, jobs and responsibilities. A guild with little to no members, no communications from guildmembers, guildleaders or guild tasks and objectives. Is there character or world development? Little to no character or world development. There was skill development more at the beginning of the series, but in the second volume is just action. What is the point of playing and playing and playing?? is the main character training to participate in a championship, a game contest? Nada. Nope, rien de tout. It gets so chronic that main character and retinue barely sleep, eat, talk to parents, log off and on into the game.
I think this novel series needs a lot of work. On the basics, on the plot arcs, on creating likeable stories for the characters, for the game, for the social media about the game, etc.

First Book started on an amazing premise, but second one flounders

Loved the premise of trying create selfawareness in beings in a new world and all it entailed, but sadly author tends to NOT think things through to their consequential end, which makes it (sometimes very) hard, to keep in the story.
I stopped halfway through, when I *******small spoiler alert********
realized, the creator of the world, with all its NPC‘s etc., so a very complex undertaking, had supposedly not even thought about how to punish respawning players (like imprisoning them, denying access, or whatever)….it was just too much, combined with an OP spellcaster setup (permanent selfsufficient spellcontructs possible, who NEVER spent any time setting up some cool tools for selfhealing, causing damage, protection etc., only continuously blowing himself up with new experiments, and then in EVERY fight tanking his mana in the first few casts, while not even considering creating a manastoragedevice (remember permanent spellconstructs?)) These are just a few of my peeves.
Anyways, I‘m off here, this is getting too silly for me.

4 out of 5

I'm really enjoying this series so far. I like the main and supporting characters, I like the world they're in, and of the game aspects I really like the progression the main character has with his magic and other abilities.

I did think the "bad guy" from Lox's past was pretty weak, in that he reads as "generic bad guy with no motivation", except he's not an npc so that was a bit disappointing.

The story did have some pacing and editing issues. The "stat sheets" and ability description and selections are all very messy. Stat sheet in particular is shown twice, in full each time he levels up, when it only needs to be shown once. I noticed this in the previous book as well and it stands out because the 2nd time isn't even edited to reflect the changes that Lox makes. So you're getting the same stats twice for no reason.

The editing is a huge bug bear for me as it's a big problem in the LitRPG genre on the whole. I don't like paying for a published book that feels like it's still in draft.

Having said that, I am enjoying the series enough to try and not get too annoyed by it all, but it's not the ideal situation.

Good story but...

There are glaring holes in writing. Can instead of can't, mentioned something immediately after stat sheet only fornit to be nowhere on the list and lastly we went from not character sheet because of the transition unless you sat down and really focused TO having it like it never changed when they transition.

There are also moments where a sentence made no sense but if ignored then everything was understandable. This happened a couple of times.

Compared to a lot of authors that made these mistakes, I am happy to say that I still can make sense of it. The others? I noped out sooooo hard after the 3rd chapter of the first book and never went back.

But a beg the author: proof read, proof read, proof read but have more then 1 other person do it. Not doing this just feels sloppy.

All this considered, I do want to see where the story goes. It is a great storyline.

Now that the new car smell is gone, the story has quickly done stale. Book one was interesting with the new concepts, although it took a long while to explain it. Book two only touches on them in small ways, but expand a bit on the experimenting. This is not enough to entertain and, to me, it felt like the story became very generic. Some romance, some action, not a lot (if any if I'm honest) character progression. I really tried to like the book, but since there are to many detimental parts to it, I have to drop it to find something that can suck me into the world and story.

Disappointed honestly

I was expecting a little necromancy from the MC or at least something out of the ordinary. Felt like the whole book was slice of life. Like I wasted hours reading this and the story progressed by such a marginal amount.

It also wasn't proofread. A lot of sentences have errors such as 'thankfully he can read so there was no worry of him learning the book.' Which caused you to be like wait did he mean can't?

Decent read. Glaring typographical errors

It is a standard litrpg with an OP main character. It's overall an enjoyable read with obvious filler in there for more pages. There are also two parts in this book where it seems like it was copy pasted in because as you read it repeats the last page rather abruptly. If it wasn't for those easy errors I would have done at least three stars for this book. Hopefully the next one has a couple proofreads.

A good story

Not a bad start. Looking forward to more. A little annoyed by the repetitive filler of stats and buffs for each skill. Would prefer a link to a glossary for it in general and show only updated skills from previous ones. No need for wasting time on showing the same thing over and over. But sure that copy paste is really 👌 🙄. Otherwise love it. Highly recommend for Litrpg fans.

Another great book in this series.
I was listening to the audiobook version and the narrator does a fantastic job.

Finding out more about the world, the different characters and the gameplay makes me want to dive right into book 3.
The relationships between characters (friendships, romance, etc) were well done, so were the battle scenes.

I just wished there was more of Saul in this book, but hopefully he will be more present in the next book. Loved him right from the get go.

Fun with a few flaws.

The second book in the series was a fun one to read. Lox progressed some, found a grinding heaven and even joined a guild. I like that something darker is going on underneath it all. There are a few issues with pacing, speech that doesn’t flow very well and the editing could have been better.

knocked it out of the park.

My only complaint is I want to see more of the soul vampirism. As I prefer melee characters…that is my cross to bear, knowing that is not the MC’s focus. Great story and so many opportunities left to explore. Excited to see where the author takes us.

Interesting book, characters are well developed

However, there are a massive number of errors in punctuation and word usage. Examples 'he wailed on the monster' in stead of 'whaled' - wail is a cry of dispair. 'The party was hear' instead of 'here'.

I like the story, but the poor editing really distracts from it for me.

Interesting story but amateurish writing

This series has a refreshing plot and is interesting enough. But the poor writing, bad grammar, and stupid typos are so distracting it ruins true enjoyment.

Enjoyable series

The plot lines have some variation from the litrpg format, but are interesting. One criticism, stop long formatting every skill table, gamers don't read the title and all the info everything, and the character doing so is tedious.

Good book. But stop repeating options

Pages and pages of meaningless level up options are repeated over and over. It's filler and sucks.

Other than that.. a great litrpg story . Amazing magic and world.

Really good

Really great story. I love the magic and adventure.

Gotta cut some of the wordiness and quit repeating the character sheet details every time you make a small change...that got a bit tedious, but th story pulled me through it.. great story. On to the next one!!

Redundant and boring

Lists multiple pages of stats, has maybe a paragraph to say MC chooses, then lists the pages of stats again. Constant page filler rather than content, and the most boring fight scenes I've ever had the misfortune of reading.

Thought it would get better than the first sad to say it does not. It's like every bad DnD session I have ever run where one guy ruins it for everyone by going off on side quests constantly and can't stay on track.
