Falling in love with a cheerleader might be a cliché, but dumpy Del Romano just couldn't help herself. At least she was smart enough to keep her mouth shut about it until she could get the hell out of Briar's Glen to start her real life.
Bree Hampton barely noticed the boring goth girl in algebra class. She had bigger fish to fry. Grow up, marry the quarterback, and get a big house up on the hill of Briar's Glen. A simple and achievable plan for the high school golden girl.
But fifteen years later, Bree's charmed life has fallen apart around her ears. And things in Briar's Glen aren't looking too great. A teenager has gone missing, and now Bree's boss has disappeared too. Then a sexy stranger walks through the door of the shop. A stranger that might not be a stranger at all.
Life in a small town wasn't for Del. Too cramped, too conservative, too boring. But now, thanks to a phone call from her small-time criminal father, she's back in town. And things have changed...
They say that you can't go home again. But what if they're wrong?
A Perfect Mess is a new stand-alone lesbian romance from Sienna Waters, the bestselling author of The Wrong Date and the Oakview series.
3.75 stars. This is a sweet, return to small hometown romance.
Del left her hometown as soon as she could. Having never quite found home elsewhere, when she gets a phone call from her father asking her to return home and look his shop whilst he’s on the run from the IRS, she takes it as a sign to quit her job and see where life takes her.
Bree never left said home town. Cheerleader and dating a football player last time she saw Del, life has changed for her somewhat. She now works at the store Del is looking after.
I enjoy reading Waters work and this definitely has some enjoyable qualities. One of my favourite parts of the book is both Del and Bree having to confront their feelings for each other. For Del, there is the not wanting to be near her high school crush, for Bree, the new feelings surrounding Del and her recent life changes. The push pull between them keeps the book interesting and the narrative flowing.
I liked how both characters weren’t what I was initially expecting from the opening chapters, and I enjoyed the small town feel of the book. I liked Del’s growth and acceptance of the town’s occupants and what it might mean for her future. Her father is also an interesting character.
Romance fans will find something to enjoy in this one.

There's something about SW's books that infuriates me: I reach the half way point, certain 5*s, and something changes, the story is nearly done and it becomes forced. Odd. But I keep on reading them.
3.5 - This was a quick read but I didn’t really get on board with it. It’s a lesbian romance/crime which I was drawn to. It started off really strong and faded by about 50%. It became somewhat predictable in the romance aspect. In the crime aspect it fell short with the outcome. I probably wouldn’t recommend this book to others but I would consider reading more from this author. It’s possibly just not her best work.
A perfect mess is a charming story about Del, a former high school loner and outcast, and Bree, the stereotypical high school cheerleader who married her Quarterback boyfriend. There's a great little mystery from the get-go, a who done it that had me wondering the whole book. I would recommend this book.

Del is returning to a place she says never felt like home, but she always wants to do what's right. Her dad needs to get out of town and asks for her help. Bree is the girl of her dreams since high school. Del never expected to find Bree running her dad's store. Bree sees Del very differently than when they were teenagers. Both women are dealing with some life changes and discovering home is where and with whom you choose to make it. Along with this great slow burn romance there is a bit of a mystery about a missing teenage girl. Del learns things about her community she never knew, but she really is coming home.

Ms. Waters' latest romance centers around Del and Bree and the town they both grew up in. Circumstances dictate Del's return to her hometown after 15 years and a dormant spark is reignited when she sees Bree but matters of the heart cannot be controlled - if only she would stop jumping to conclusions. A storyline with small town gossip, intrigue, fertile imaginings, misunderstanding, slow romance, a pinch of humor and a missing teenager and there you have it - a perfect mess. With all the excitement, ups and down, the I.R.S. and Ronnie's shady dealings, will there be room for a HEA? Supporting characters such as Ronnie (Del's dad) and Rosalie (Bree's best friend) among others flesh out the plot. An enjoyable, quick read that I recommend.

Waters has delivered a heartwarmingly messy love story that is touching, inspiring, and undeniably sweet.
A perfect Mess is so aptly named. As I read the story and followed all of the struggles the characters faced I liked the name but by the end I could never imagine a more fitting and perfect name. A missing girl, an ex-cop, a woman in the process of a messy and unexpected divorce, a father that needs to skip town, and a noisy and helpful town round out this complicated story, and together you get A Perfect Mess.
The drama is so well developed throughout this story. People are complex and lead messy lives and I loved how Waters not only captured but actively drew readers in to both the good and bad. Between a very complicated love story and the life altering issues faced by the characters there is no shortage of excitement.
The romance was top notch. I loved how strong of a connection both women felt and how they each struggled with wants and where they wanted life to lead them. It is equal parts sweet, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. The chemistry is so strong and made for many delightful interactions. The dialogue was also very well done.
The characters really drove this story for me. I love the focus on self love and making decisions that are best for yourself yet not giving up when you have something real.
I found myself surprised with the direction the plot went on several occasions and was extremely pleased with the direction the story took even though it wasn’t always what I expected. Even the ending was not what I would normally expect, but felt very fitting to the story and left a memorable and sweet impact.
I loved this wonderful story so much, with it’s interesting and lovable characters that made this perfect mess of a story one not to be missed.
I read 60% of the book in one go so that might show how much I liked it. Loved how the relationship starts in a very refreshing and straightforward way, and how Bree is not your typical main character who was supposed to be straight nor Del is the perfect and cold cop who solves cases without even trying. Quite the opposite, Bree’s life has gone to hell after her husband threw her out and Del is about to lose the job she loves simply because she cares too much. The relationship works smoothly, the mystery adds a nice touch and the whole story has that Sienna Waters’ style which makes it interesting and light at the same time. Both characters have things to learn and some lines really touched me because I can understand Del perfectly and I agree with the idea of making something work instead of waiting for the perfect situation to happen. Adding some of Bree’s path, that great message that perfection is not needed to find happiness and that we just have to l find what’s the perfect mess that works for us, and you have an entertaining story with the exact amount of ingredients to have a good time. Always a pleasure to read a book from the author.
This is a story about Del coming home to the town she grew up to help out her father. It’s the town she never felt that she belonged and didn’t fit in. This is also the reason she left several years ago as soon as she could.
Coming back she meets the girl (Bree) that she fell in love with as a teenager. The popular cheerleader that had it all. But soon she is going to realise that Bree‘s life isn’t that perfect anymore and she even seems to see her this time. Even if she doesn’t really get first why.
What follows is another funny and heartwarming story by Sienna Waters. A story that got to me in several places and one that made me question my own behaviour several times. I might not totally agree with everything. I mean it’s not possible to fit in everywhere and to get along with everyone. And I don’t think it’s always good to be pushed into something that we are not comfortable with. That’s at least how I see it. But yes sometimes you need to be pushed, you have to look twice and things are different as they seem. People can change and often we are own worst enemy anyway.
I loved the dynamic between Del and Bree. They are good together and just fit. I had a good time seeing them working out their problems and differences. And well yes I totally fell in love with Del.
If you’re already a fan of Sienna Waters I’m sure you’re going to love this book to. And if you haven’t read her books maybe this will be the book that gets you sucked in. 😉

I've sat for a little while trying to figure out what to say about this book. I'm in a weird philosophical mood, so hang with me. We have our small town, oh noes! A small town! We're going to be reading about X. Well no, it's a Stepford small town where yes, everyone does know everyone else's business, no one cares if you're a little bent. Our first MC is Del, she left town as soon as she could. She never liked the place. Never fit in, was always on the outside. Kept to herself. Her one indulgence is her major crush on the head cheerleader, our second MC Bree. Whom she never spoke to, or interacted with in any meaningful way, as it was written she would grow up to marry the HS QB and have a Blessed life. It's a few years after HS and everyone's in the middle of their Blessed life, right? Yeah, no. Del's been through a billion jobs about to lose another. Bree's marriage has crashed and burned in a most spectacular way. Del ends up back in small-town due to her father's emotional plea to come to oversee the family store in his absence. Guess who's managing the store? You got it in one! I realized setting this up, I can't really talk about what left me philosophical without getting too detailed about - I don't even know if these are plot points, but maybe just how they hit me. They're very late in the book, and I don't think you want this spoiled for you. It's sometimes the very simple things when you look at them that makes you think the longest.

I will say that this was an okay read for me for most of it, the writing is on par with the genre, I didn't hate most of the characters, the obligatory break-up makes sense enough. But the ending made me profoundly dislike it, ultimately:
1. I didn't find the ex-husband to be believable, given how he is perceived in the town – and so the twist of how he is involved with the rang like a superficial attempt at subverting expectations 2. In relation to that, I do not agree that the ex-cop was right about her gut feeling about him and the and that felt like a vindicative apology of "good cops following their instinct" when literally she was all but fired for literally being a bad cop (which her superior calls her), but she's bad only because she has such a strong desire for justice that she's overzealous *eyeroll* 3. So that then, her becoming the small town's officer feels even worse to me
All that is made worse because the ex-wife truly feels like the sweetest and her love interest really is just depicted as good looking and itching to leave and that's kind of it? Yet we're told how nice she is and how the entire town is welcoming her in their fold for... reasons?
Like all of Ms. Waters' books, A Perfect Mess is very well-written, with fully drawn, lifelike characters and a very creative, highly original premise and storyline. There's a bit of a thriller-style subplot wrapped up with that of the F/F romance, but even the suspects/villains don't turn out to be quite what you expect.
As with a couple of other of her excellent books, it took me a little while to feel fully engaged with the characters in this novel, but by halfway through I was definitely feeling it, and by two-thirds, I was there in the room/shop/cottage/float with them. Both Del and Bree have insecurities and other issues that get in the way of their developing romance, and these issues are explored in depth. Both women are lovable, flawed, and relatable, and I very much enjoyed getting to know them and hanging out with them as they lurched and bumbled their way to a HEA.
Definitely worth a read!

When Del's father calls to tell her he needs her to return to her small town home while he goes away to settle a tax issue, Del reluctantly agrees. She's back after 13 years since the end of high school and in helping to take care of her father's store, she's working along side Bree, the former cheerleader who was Del's unrequited first love. Bree is newly separated from her husband, the former quarterback and is struggling financially. She's puzzled by an attraction to Del and the two finally admit their feelings but don't seem to be able make things work. Del is still planning to leave town and Bree never wants to leave.
There's a bit more plot here involving Bree's ex-husband, a disappeared teenager, and Del's former job as a cop. But the romance is the central point.
The book is okay though I have to admit I just couldn't get to like Del. She was too tentative, too unsure of herself, almost self-hating. Of course, everything gets settled by the end, but it's all a bit quick and easy.
I absolutely adore stories about prodigal children returning home to find true love. Which is what happens here. With the tensions around police shootings recently, I had to push myself past the first few pages. The storyline of a police officer so hyped on the “blue haze” that she pulled a gun on an elderly woman, then joked about not pulling it on the child left me a little nauseated. I am glad I swallowed my initial reservations and continued on with the story. The story of Bree and Del was beautiful. The loner (Del) who had a crush on the cheerleader (Bree) runs as far away from her hometown as she can is called back home to hell her father. At a career crossroads, Del goes home to run her father’s shop, which is coincidentally staffed with soon-to-be divorcée and former cheerleader, Bree.
You will enjoy this sweet love story.

A Perfect Mess is a charming romance with a little mystery on the side. Del is the former high school loner and Bree is the former cheerleader who married her high school quarterback. Now Del is back home at the age of thirty-one to help her dad. I thought this trope was going to be so formulaic, but from the moment Mel's father left town to flee the IRS, I knew this story would be something new for me. She's a cop and he's fleeing from the law? Sheesh! Throw in the mystery and it kept me thinking throughout the book.
Both ladies are very likeable, but how will they ever make this work when one wants to stay while the other wants to leave. And what about the ex husband? Their friends and the townspeople are very involved. That's what I like about small towns. Everyone might know your business, but they sure pitch in and look out for each other when needed. So grab yourself a copy of this warm-hearted story. You'll be glad you did!
What I liked: The premise. I enjoy a nice 'return to home' story with a bit of torture and angst. I really liked Bree and Del. I found them engaging and likeable. Bree's turmoil a little later in the story was some nice angst. I like the integrity of the characters overall. The setting was ok. The story simmering in the background was interesting and added to the overall enjoyment of the story.
What I didn't like: I thought the sex was... Well it wasn't what I expected or what I was hoping for. hah So that's quite true to life on occasion. I just hoped for a little more of a drawn out scene with some tenderness. I like a little rough and tumble .. but yeah.. I think something a little more would have been nice. I like the way it was alluded to later but... some definite disappointment there. The epilogue. It was odd. And unsatisfying.
Sweet Romance with a little bit of crime on the side or so i thought? I believe that if Katie was actually killed or kidnapped by someone who didn’t turn out to be Gabe that would’ve surprised the audience and therefore created more tension or anticipation for the story’s ending. Nevertheless, the book isn’t all about the crime and it’s about the cute ‘seeing my first love again’ romance that goes well even though Bree wants everything to be perfect which isn’t and is a ‘mess’ because Del isn’t a perfectionist like her hence the name of the book. I liked the story itself but it could’ve been more exciting with more drama and stuff. Even so the book was very well written so props to the author for that. Cheers

Del returns to her hometown to run help manage her fathers store. She finds that Bree Hampton is the only employee. Del was a loner in HS and couldn't wait to leave. Bree was a cheerleader, loves the town and is in the middle of a divorce. This is quick romance with a sort of mystery thrown in. I know it is a small town but everyone knew a little too much about everyones business and was very accepting. There also wasn't a lot of background for the characters. Where was Bree's family, what other work has Del been doing for 15 years. It was an okay story but I was expecting more.
This is a back-to-your-hometown, goth-girl finally gets the cheerleader romance. Most of the angst takes place in the mind of the returning Del as she ponders what being home really means in her life. Occasional set backs aside, the main characters seem to make a decent couple. The secondary cast is fairly one-dimensional and does not provide much insight into either Bree or Del's motivations. The story arc comes to a close with the expected HEA.
A solid read. Not wonderful but kept drawing me in. The suspense and mystery was a nice addition and I totally felt the romance factor. Well paced for being such a short book, would have loved more time with these characters. The ending wasn't great but that's okay. Main issue was I thought this book was in the UK based on veriage used (flat, rota, etc) so I was continually thrown off when the characters were discussing locations.
Well...I enjoyed the romance well enough, although I didn't feel much of a connection between them. But everything else was kind of...a let-down? It felt anti-climactic. The truth of the missing girl, the angst between Del and Bree, her father, and so on. I kept waiting for something, I don't know, revelatory or breathtaking or riveting to happen. And it never did. I didn't hate the story, I just didn't love it, and I doubt will be raving about it any time soon.
I've enjoyed every Sienna Waters book to date, and this one is no exception. The eyebrow-raising beginning grabs you straight away. Then the wonderfully quirky characters drag you along for their ride, and we reach the finish with a satisfying feeling of home and hope. Loved it!

As always, Sierra Waters doesn’t disappoint. I really like this trope. The cheerleader and the goth girl. I love the build up and not so much angst when Bree is figuring out her feelings with Del. She just knows that she wants. I also love how she was able to interpret it herself. There are also a lot of cute moments that I can’t help to smile. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed this story. Both Brew and Del are small town girls who meet up several years after high school. They weren't really friends but knew who each other was. Now that they're grown women, things they never noticed before become apparent and they decide that maybe they can be more to each other than just friends.... or can they...?
Sienna gives another page turner and I think I read this book in record time!
Del and Bree are both the epitome of small town residents, one who is desperate to stay and the other is desperate to leave. Can they meet somewhere in the middle?
I don't want to spoil it for others. A definite must for your tbr list.
In a sense, the blurb doesn't seem intriguing to me, because I dislike the "she was not conventionally beautiful, but now that she is, her crush falls all over her" kind of stories. However, the blurb didn't stop me because I love this author's work. And the book did not disappoint!

I really enjoyed the story of Del and Bree. Two women who grew up in the same town. Bree was the head cheerleader and Del flew underneath the radar. When Del returns to their town, she and Bree slowly become friends and then lovers. Ms. Waters let’s us know that it is okay to want a perfect mess.
