Rate this book
Her future is brighter than the stars. But one betrayal will change everything…

Vivian Kawabata can't wait to claim her privileged destiny. But when the heir to the family agricultural empire finds her bank account empty while shopping for expensive shoes, she’s horrified to discover that her own brother has financially stabbed her in the back. To stand a chance of restoring her rightful place in the universe, the honest and rule-following Vivian may have to break a few intergalactic laws.

After securing an old ship from her aunt, Vivian takes on two new roles: a sexy heiress collecting eligible husbands and a hard-nosed captain rebuilding a lost fortune by any means necessary. Completely out of her depth, she'd be sunk without the help of a relationship broker, a handsome ex-boyfriend, a hacker with a heart of gold, and the other potential partners she meets along the way. With a business that runs the razor’s edge between trade and smuggling, can the former high-society socialite get the money she needs or will her brazen ambition lead to a deadly crash landing?

First Flyght is the first book in the Flyght Series of sci-fi reverse harem romance. If you like action-packed space operas and a universe full of twists, then you’ll love S. J. Pajonas’s interstellar adventure.

Note: This is a slow-burn romance series!

While the concept sounded interesting, for me this didn't really get interesting until the last 20%.

Vivian was a bit too whiney to be likeable, although I felt sorry for her, and I wasn't really attached to any of the characters.

The last 20%, however, set up a much more interesting plot than the rest of the book and I may well read the second one in the future.

The story was okay--but it was mostly just scrambling and set-up.

The characters were varied, what with the family dynasty, shitty siblings, ex's, mob bosses, matchmakers, and seedy possible clients...but at times the story just felt a bit flat. Like I said this is just a first book in the series, but while things happened this only felt like background info and a stepping stone to the next book.

Also the only emotion I connected to in this book was anger when reading about the FL's family (mostly her mother) and Viv's gotta go along to get along waffling wasn't really endearing...but if I read on she will probably grow in up coming books.

But seeing as how ho hum the prospective romance is looking at this point (despite the possibilities of a RH) I would probably just read on for the space shenanigans.

I have liked this author's more complex world building in the past, but this story is much lighter. This is part of a series, and this first book is heavy on the setup. Lots of people to meet and figure out how they fit in the puzzle.

Note that the "reverse harem" tag is cultural; this is not an erotic romance.

I'll give #2 a try to see if thing happen.

I have previously enjoyed books by S.J. Pajonas and have been curious about The Flyght series for a while. I was ready for another book filled with action, drama, and loveable characters – and I was not disappointed. First Flyght was a book I happily devoured in a single sitting, and I cannot wait to see what comes next in the series.

I will be honest and say this one was a wee bit of a slow starter. Events were happening that had me curious, but I wasn’t quite sure in what direction we were going to head and how the pieces would come together. Once things started to move, however, the story did not let up. There was plenty packed into this one, numerous elements that I’m eager to see come together. There is a lot of promise for chaos, and I cannot wait to see how these details unfold.

Without a doubt, First Flyght is a wonderful start to what promises to be another addictive series from S.J. Pajonas.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

First Flyght was one of my most anticipated releases of the year and as soon as my copy arrived I started it right after I finished my current read. I happily dived into this new science fiction romance series by SJ Pajonas. First Flyght was a great start to this new series and I can't wait to see where the series goes next. This is a great introduction to this series and there is so much potential and set-up and characters that I want to read more about.

First Flyght is told from the point of view of Vivian. Vivian has studied hard for the last 6 years, she's graduating soon and then taking over the farm. Until she discovers her brother took all the money and ran. Now the bank is going to take their farm and unless they can buy it back within a year they never see their family farm again. Vivian is the only one who can make the money needed for this, so she jumps on a ship along with her friend Skylar and hopes to find ways to make money to buy back the farm. She also hires a relationship broker who is looking for potential suitors and that's how her journey starts.

I like the whole set-up and how the main premise gets established quite quickly, but not rushed at all. And at the same time we get a feel for main character Vivian. I really felt for Vivian, she is in quite the difficult situation and after all her hard studying her dream of running the family farm seems almost out of reach now. And now she has to struggle to make the money to buy it back. Pajonas does has the habit to take her main characters through a lot and that's certainly the case here. Vivian's life gets worse before it even has the chance to get better. It almost felt a bit too much bad things happened to her at times, but it also felt realistic, as sometimes you get very down before things get better.

I liked Vivian for the most part, she could get a bit down sometimes, but given her situation that definitely seemed understandable. I liked how determined she was to make the best of this situation and take care of her crew. I like how she cared for others and listened to them. She was friendly, but also determined to fight for what she wanted to achieve. She seemed smart and had some creative/ unconventional ideas. Although I wish she thought a bit more of herself at times as she deserved to be happy too. It was interesting to see how she handled everything and I was totally rooting for her when she finally indulges herself and buys something for herself.

I like how the harem aspect is set-up in this book. With the world building that is established with more men than women, it makes sense how it is more common for women to have multiple husbands. It was interesting how Vivian thought to settle for one guy, but how the situation changed her mind. I am looking forward to see which other men she meets in future books. In this book she is only introduced to one of her love interests, I think.

This book is low on the romance, with the focus more on Vivian's journey and how she's trying to make things work. but there is an ex who she crosses paths with and which might turn into more again. To be honest I am not sold on ken and Vivian's romance yet. I like the sound of their previous relationship, but didn't quite feel their current spark as much yet. Ken seemed interested in giving it another try, but I didn't quite feel the same sentiment of Vivian with how she just wanted to avoid him. I also didn't quite like how Ken handles things at the end by asking that of Vivian. Although I think it will turn out alright, I still didn't like his behavior there. But there's enough promise of more there that I hope I'll feel their romance more in the next book.

I liked how Vivian is knowledgeable of plants and growing things and how that plays a role in this book. And also the animals, there are quite a bunch of animals who play a role in the story, which was fun. I hope to see more of them in the next book.

There is a fun cats of side character. Skylar is loyal and close to Vivian, although she could be a tad self centered at times. I also was quite fond of Ai, the ship's AI who has quite the colorful personality and adds come comic relief to some scenes too. Then there is Carlos, who knows a lot about tech and even hacking. And the girl who takes care of the animals. And Vivian's relationship broker was an interesting character too, I liked how he interacted Vivian for the most part and liked the challenge of finding potential suitors for her.

The world building is so interesting so far and I loved everything we learn about this world. There are some pieces that really come alive and it's easy to form an image of how things work in this world. I mostly want more tough as it's all so interesting and there are still some details missing for it fully come alive in my mind. Pajonas does a great job sprinkling the world building throughout the story so as not to overwhelm readers, I am just impatient and want to know even more about the world as that's always one of my favorite aspects of Pajonas' books as she's so good at creating new worlds.

To summarize: First Flyght is an exciting start to this new series. When Vivian finds out her family might lose the farm, she has to find a way to save money to buy it back from the bank. Vivian is a great character with how determined she is an how she cares for her crew. She has a lot staked against her and I liked seeing how she handled everything thrown her way. I liked the fun cast of side character. I especial liked Ai, the ship's AI. There are also a bunch of animals around which is fun. The set-up for the harem makes sense given the world building, but this book is still low on romance. There is a bit of romance with Vivian's ex who she crosses paths with again. I don't fully feel the romance yet, but I am hoping that will change in the next book. And I am looking forward to see which other men Vivian will meet. I love what we've seen from the world so far and can't wait to learn more in future books. It ends on a hopeful note and I can't wait to for book 2 and see what comes next!

I like most of this author's books, so I have been looking forward to this new series. The story moves quickly, and Vivian is a strong woman facing enormous obstacles. But there is too much build-up and not enough action to make it really enjoyable for me.

I understand that the series gets stronger, and I have confidence in the author, so I will read the next one.

A fantastic start to a new series---I kept jumping back to reading this book when I should have been reading books I needed to finish for review. This one kept calling me back to it, and I finally just gave in and read the whole second half, telling myself I'd get back to that review book as soon as I finished. :-)

I truly felt for Vivian as her world fell apart, and I was interested in the reverse harem society and how their world ended up there. I'll be eager to see how Vivian deals with that in future books since she's always sort of imagined herself as a one-man sort of woman. I did feel like the end of the book felt a little fast and unresolved (it's definitely a first book in a series), and I would have liked a little more time between Ken and Vivian to develop the romance, but I'm sure we'll be seeing that happen in future books (as well as some relationships with other men).

If you've read any of Pajonas's other books, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this one as well---she has a very distinct voice as writer. And if you haven't tried Pajonas yet and you're a fan of adult sci-fi, you need to give this book a try!

Re-read review of audio version:
I really enjoyed re-reading First Flyght and enjoyed it even more the second time around. It was great to spot some of the foreshadowing and it was awesome going back to the start of Vivian's journey and see how it started out. There's so much going on in this book and I liked seeing how all those plot threads are set up in book 1, especially knowing where they go later in the series.

This book was AI narrated and the first time I listened to an AI narrated book. There was a slight adjustment period at the start as I got used to the AI voice, but I ended up liking it. It was a pleasant listen and I thought the AI voice sounded pretty natural. I did have some confusion early on in the books a few times with dialogue as it was sometimes hard to know when dialogue started or not as the AI voice sounds the same for everyone, but it got better as the book progressed. Definitely worth checking out in audio!

Short

So freaking short but didn't read as shallow and short. All the characters, different personalities, quite a bit if a mystery. Meh on the heat but I'd read more books if it wasn't 4 bucks for under 200 pages.

I have read many books from S.J. Pajonas already, so I was very hyped for this new book!

I really enjoyed reading First Flyght. It has a good balance between action and romance and continued keep me excited until the end. The main character Vivian was very likeable in my opinion but I also enjoyed the other main- and side characters, each with a good personality. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the space setting. So, a very good read in my opinion and I cannot wait for part 2! :)

I really enjoyed Vivian’s character which pings off the page. Hardworking and focused on pleasing her family, she has been a model daughter – to the extent that she has put her own wishes for her future on hold in order to become an heiress worthy of the family farm. I really felt for her when the rug is pulled from under her feet and I think Pajonas manages to tread the fine line between fully depicting the devastation she feels and having her lapse too much into victim mode. By this time, I should have put the book down and got some much-needed sleep, but that wasn’t happening – I gulped this one down in a single sitting, as the pages kept turning themselves.

I also liked the supporting characters in this entertaining, bouncy story which, despite Vivian’s travails, has a nicely upbeat vibe in the humorous asides amongst the crew. As for the developing reverse harem storyline, it clearly isn’t going to be anything too graphic or sleazy for my taste. These days, while I appreciate a well-written romantic plotline, I generally don’t pick up any book for the romantic content alone – and I liked the fact that while I think I can predict at least one of Vivian’s future partners, there is going to be plenty of feelings and affection displayed in these relationships.

I am definitely going to be looking for more of these books – I need to find out how Vivian is going to prevail, whether she catches up with that shifty brother of hers and how the hilarious ship AI is going to cope with a cargo of pigs…

Highly recommended for fans of entertaining, character-led space opera with a strong romantic element involving a reverse harem story.

Vivian worked hard and gave up a lot, including the man she loves, to earn her degrees and to take over her family business. Unfortunately, on the same day that she has finally finished her last college obligation, she finds out that her brother has stolen the family's money and bankrupted the farm. I falls on Vivian's shoulders to find her brother, and earn the bulk of the money needed to buy the farm back from the bank. Her aunt gives Vivian and her cousin Skylar a spaceship called the Amagi, which they can use for the next year to earn, hopefully, the money they need for the farm. They will quickly realize that it won't be easy to find people willing to trust them with freight when they have absolutely no experience. When she gets a contract, maybe quentionable, she remembers the box her father gave her right before she left and opens it to find what could be a gold mine inside. Vivian will turn to her former boyfriend, Ken, he gives her start up cash for her project and Vivian, Skylar, and her small crew make their first run.

Vivian seems to carry the weight of her family's, especially her mother, expectations to extricate the entire family from the wreckage cause by Tomu's actions. I felt sorry for her at times, but then she would make me laugh. Actually all of these characters are well written, unique, and made me laugh at times. Wonderful world building, unexpected, and surprising twists. I couldn't put this book down, and I think it is a must read. Fantastic book, I loved it.

I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.

I'm always excited to read a new series, esp. one by an author whose work I enjoy. That's the case with S.J. Pajonas' Flyght series. The story is so compelling I read it through almost nonstop. Then, I had to find the 2nd book.

Vivian is such a fantastic character. Driven to succeed, bred to follow her mother's rules and decisions, Vivian has put her own wishes and desires aside to fulfill her destiny of taking over the family enterprise. Then, she's betrayed by her bitter and revengeful brother. As the story progresses, we see her change from an honest rule-follower to one who skims the edge of the law, even breaking a few. But while she loosens her ethics, her stress rises. On top of bringing her brother to justice, she must save the family enterprise by any means possible--like taking on multiple consorts and captaining a trade ship. She's assisted by a match-maker, her beautiful pilot cousin, a teen computer genius, and her suitors.

I never thought I'd like a reverse harem story. I thought it would be like a manage a trois. First Flyght convinced me to give this sub-genre a try. The story is compelling, characters are well developed, Vivian, of course, more than the rest, and the world building is complex and believable.

First Flyght

What happens when the life you envisioned is stolen from you, right before you are ready to finally take control of it? When the older brother who has been running your family business, bleeds it financially dry, then runs off before the creditors can catch him...taking all you have worked so hard to accomplish with him. That’s the life that Vivian is thrust into, where all she has ever wanted is destroyed and chaos now reins supreme.

The one person you are supposed to be able to depend on let her down,*her mother* and the rest of Vivian’s family still thinks it’s acceptable to make all the decisions for her in her life.

Vivian isn’t a slacker, she has worked long and hard going to school to earn her degrees that would ensure that the family business would not only keep sustaining her family, but that she could grow the business with all her ideas and new designs for Hydroculture. But she soon realizes that some dreams aren’t meant to be.

As Vivian’s world keeps tumbling into chaos, and she is left with her dreams in tatters , a way out of this nightmare is left in the hands of the one man that Vivian never wanted to see again. Her ex, again with no other choices available to her, Vivian stumbles through the confrontation with the man she turned down for marriage and ask him not one but multiple favors....but as Vivian suspected he is in no way willing to help.

Join Vivian and her band of misfit crewmen as Vivian learns that it’s ok to dream new dreams and change the destiny you never really wanted anyway!

Decent Slow burn series

Definitely an interesting story. The world building was rich and well thought out. I liked the story but there was a lot of repetitiveness. I felt like every other line was about how stressed the FMC was and how she was handling so much. Or how she didn’t ever have a choice. She was really whiny. She would have moments when she’d buck up but she’d turn meek again. I liked her harem because they were different, but they didn’t interact very much. The epilogue makes it seem like that trend continues. 2 of the guys are off planet and only visit. There were also some storylines that weren’t fully resolved. I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t mention specifics.

There was no steam. All the good times were more fade to black or implied. Not a big deal but I know somebody would want to know before buying.

I did enjoy the story and I’d probably continue will the other books in this world.

Vivian's older brother embezzles the family fortune and disappears. The family farm enterprise is foreclosed. Since only women can be landowners in this society, it falls to Vivian as heir to restore the family's fortune and reputation, as well as buy back the land from the bank. Her cousin owns a cargo ship, so they embark on a plan to fly cargo to try and raise the needed 3.3 million credits in a year. It requires getting a license from a shipping company, one naturally owned by Vivian's ex. Their breakup was messy, so that's not going to be easy.

Sci fi is my thing, the reverse harem less so. I'm willing to give it a shot since I like almost everything Pajonas has written. I like the universe-building, and the reason for the harem makes sense here. This novel is a quick read and seems to set up the series nicely. Looking forward to the next book.

Why did you read this book?
This was labeled a RH romance.

What format did you read this book in?
Read it as an ebook on Kindle.

Is this an educational book or a book for entertainment?
I read this book for pure entertainment purposes.

What genres do you think this book belongs to?
Science Fiction

DNF (did not finish). What made the book unfinishable in your opinion?
I found the book boring and most of the characters were bland. I really couldn't get into the story and I was 15% of the way in. I expected at least a hint of romance, but I was disappointed. I think this book should have been relabeled as a Sci-fi and not a RH romance.

I’m not a sci fi fan but the author really made this an enjoyable, fun read. Low on the romance end, more of Vivian’s situation. Fast paced and well written. I liked all the characters and the plot was interesting. I knew it was part of a continuing series but did not know that it would have a bit of a cliffhanger ending. The story satisfied me enough to the point where I wasn’t upset that I didn’t know that ahead of time. Book 2 should have more of the romance/reverse harem aspect than this one did.

I received this as an advanced reading copy.

I feel bad about taking so long to read this. I had gotten a few disappointing books and decided to skip over this for a bit and come back to it. I wasn't ready to face another bad science fiction novel. Now I wish I hadn't skipped over it. The book is really good. Good concept, well plotted, interesting characters. The book was a joy to read and I couldn't put it down. In fact, the moment I reached the end I went and bought the second book in the series. I have to know what happened next.

I loved First Flyght! Once I started reading it I didn't want to stop. After doing everything Vivian's family asked of her, including turning down a marriage proposal from the man she loves, in order to prepare to run her family farm her brother loses it all, empties the bank accounts and dissapears. Now it's up to Vivian to save the farm. And she is willing to do whatever that takes, including dealing with her ex, Ken.

Adventure style Sci-fi. Very interesting beginning, with twists and turns so I'm going to continue with the series.
I like the new world building even though I'm not a big fan of cultural harem (or reverse harem), but I'm willing to see how it will turn out.
The references to Japanese culture is also quite fascinating, it's the first time I read the book with that included Japanese culture..and probably won't be last..very refreshing.

Also that was the 1st book from this author, and now I'm also going to check out other works.

As you follow Vivian through her ever escalating issues you get some pretty great world building, and meet some pretty awesome supporting characters along the way! I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review, but I've already decided to purchase it to add to my collection of S.J. books! She's an amazing storyteller, and this book doesn't disappoint ❤️

I bought and read this on the recommendation of an author that I really like. I was a bit uncertain at first, but I really enjoyed it. And even though it is clearly just the beginning of the entire sorry, I didn't feel cheated at the end the way I do by many first book in a series that start that way. Great story and characters. I'm definitely intrigued enough to read another.

What an interesting start to a new series. The world Vivian lives in is unique and I can't wait to learn more about it. Vivian is growing into her role as captain and I'm curious as to what men will be in her final harem. I really like her "matchmaker" and am hoping more will develop in their relationship .

S. J. Pajonas’ First Flyght (The Flyght Series Book 1) was a total blast of a read. I love the way Vivian reacted your what happened to her and the crazy hodgepodge of ship, crew (harem in the making) and new path she takes on. Totally fun to read and I’m looking forward to more. Thus book is an easy one to recommend.

I really enjoyed this story, but if ended to soon. There was no climax to the story and it leaves you hanging. If you read this story be prepared to read the entire series.
